First They Killed My Father Survivors have many traits that get them through the hardships that they have faced throughout their lives. The story and film adaptation of First They Killed My Father shows the attributes of five-year-old Luong Ung during her time under the Khmer Rouge regime. Several features that Luong displayed during the Cambodian genocide were resilience, intelligence, and the willingness to sacrifice. These and many other qualities aided Luong in the survival of herself and her loved ones. Aside from the main character in the movie, Luong, many other characters in the film demonstrated their desire for survival, such as Pa or Kim. However, due to the sheer number of people who died during this period of time, it was wishful thinking to assume that the whole family would survive. The sheer determinedness of Luong Ung to survive was truly displayed in this movie. When she was young, she was always praised by her father for being rebellious and resilient, while her mother was confused about why Luong did not act like her sisters (“First They Killed My Father”). In spite of the unorthodoxy of her character, these attributes of hers landed Luong in the role of a child soldier, while all of her other siblings went off to work in labor camps. During her recruitment as a Khmer Rouge child soldier, she was taught to “hate the Vietnamese”, who were the main opposition to the regime. She was also taught to “obey orders without hesitation”, even to the point of shooting and killing their own parents (“Southerland”). Luong’s ability to take orders benefitted her in the long run due to the punishment that would ensue if she did not obey her commanders. In addition to being able to obey people higher up than her, another one of Luong’s helpful traits was that she knew when to ignore the rules in order to survive. Of course, Luong had to have a willingness to sacrifice some of her things for the greater good. One aspect of herself that she had to forfeit was her pride. Before the invasion, she and her family had a life with little worries. They had two cars, nice clothes, and a generally carefree life. Luong herself was very dependent on her parents and older siblings. Yet, after she was separated from all of the people she depended on, she learned how to be independent and to take care of herself. She learned how to be on guard for potential danger during her time as a child soldier. This time proved to be a time of the discovery of autonomy and self-reliance for the young five year old soldier. Aside from the main character in First They Killed My Father, many others affected by the Cambodian genocide had a willingness to sacrifice their possessions and even themselves for the greater good (“Ung”). An exceptional example in the film was Pa, Luong’s father. When the Khmer Rouge was first taking over the Ung family’s hometown of Phnom Peng, he knew he had to keep his true identity a secret due to the fact that he was a high ranking official in the Cambodian government. He and his wife both realized that if the Khmer Rouge soldiers found out about Pa’s political importance, they would surely kill him and the rest of the family as well. Pa ended up doing the smarter decision by hiding his true identity and escaping the city. During the family’s time in the labor camps of Ro Leap, he gave some of his paltry rations to his wife and children to make sure that they had more to eat. When the regime soldiers finally learn of his true identity and take him away, it is almost like we can feel the loss that the rest of the family feels in their hearts. During this era that we live in today, there are many survivors that have faced terrible situations in their lifetime but have still managed to come out on top. One prime example of a modern survivor is Malala Yousafzai. Malala was a child in Swat Valley and loved to explore and learn about new material. In 2007, the Taliban invaded Swat Valley and enforced strict rules like owning a television or playing music. For Malala, the worst part was that the Taliban issued an edict banning girls from going to school. She decides to write under the pen name “Gul Makai” and blog for BBC news about living life under the constant eye of the Taliban (“Malala’s Story”). Her stories are featured by the New York Times about their lives and fighting for girls’ education in Swat. In November 2011, the Pakistani army forces the Taliban to retreat from Swat and Malala’s school is reopened. She then went to publicly campaign for girls to go to school and won the National Youth Peace Prize. Due to her increased prominence in Pakistan and around the world, the Taliban targeted Malala and attempted to have her assassinated. She survived and now speaks out and advocates for girls rights all around the world, especially third world countries. She fights for the privilege of girls who are vulnerable and uneducated up to this day with her Girl Power campaign and her campaign on encouraging people to support education with #YesAllGirls (“Malala’s Story”). Just like Luong Ung, Malala spoke of her life story, how she got through those hardships, and advocates for the change of the world to this day through books, films, and public campaigns. Because of the many helpful traits that Luong Ung had during the Cambodian genocide, she survived and learned how to take care of herself in the process. Her parents were willing to sacrifice their lives so that Luong and her siblings could survive the horrendous act that occurred during that era. Another survivor, one more modern, was Malala Yousafzai, who also spoke of her story and the adversities that came with it. Both of these strong women show traits that are common among people who have endured suffering and oppression in their lives.

Home / Bollywood / Gul Makai movie review: This Malala Yousafzai biopic is a half-baked fare Gul Makai Cast: Reem Shaikh, Atul Kulkarni, Divya Dutta Direction: HE Amjad Khan Om Puri’s two-scene cameo is a dead giveaway. Since Puri passed away in January 2017, this film must be at least three years old. As the minutes pass, the incessant, loud filmmaking makes you wonder if this is some sort of a B-grader straight out of three decades ago. That’s sad, given the subject at hand. The story of Malala Yousafzai deserved a far more professional treatment in terms of character and narrative nuances. Instead, director HE Amjad Khan takes an incredible life story and turns it into a mere excuse to spin out standard commercial cliches. Watch the trailer for Gul Makai: To be fair, Bhashwati Chakraborty’s script does reveal an intention of going beyond merely narrating the life of Malala. It tries gaining a perspective of the milieu in which she grew up, in Pakistan’s Swat Valley of the late 2000s when the place was overrun by Taliban terror, and tries utilising that backdrop to lay bare the socio-politics of that era. Yet, it soon becomes obvious that director Khan seems more interested in using that backdrop to merely create scope for unending violence and melodrama, and little else. A proper character sketch of Malala never really happens over the film’s runtime of around 130 minutes, and the life story of the film’s titular protagonist remains a shallow side show in her own biopic. The title Gul Makai (translates to flower of corn) refers to the pen name Malala used to write her fiery columns against fundamentalists. Reem Shaikh is cast as Malala, and she never really manages to emerge beyond the half-baked role she is given to play out, in a screenplay that reveals no attempt to look at the pervading Taliban situation from the eyes of its protagonist. Indeed, the storytelling suffers owing to the narrative’s inability to decide what it must focus on -- the Pak army, as it struggles to reign in the Taliban, or Malala herself, or her father Ziauddin Yousafzai (Atul Kulkarni), a liberal-minded school principal who advocates education for women as well as their right to live a life without shackles. The years around 2007-2008, when most of the events of this film take place, was a time when Swat was plundered by strife, and Khan was perhaps trying to set a grim tone with the odd gruesome peek into battle mayhem. He could have ensured that the film went slower with the hamming quotient. The sheer loudness in execution robs the film of all impact. Other familiar faces such as Arif Zakaria, Mukesh Rishi and Abhimanyu Singh, cast as Talibani fundamentalists, settle for one-dimensional villain roles -- they play out filmi terrorists reminiscent of nineties stereotypes in this half-baked fare. In 2015, American filmmaker Davis Guggenheim made a documentary titled He Named Me Malala. While that film is no scintillating exercise on the subject either, it still gives you a concise idea of who Malala Yousafzai was.
