Based on the 10th century Japanese folktale called The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, Princess Kaguya, is a stunning piece of work. Delivering beautifully crafted characters and animation, and exquisitely painted watercolor backdrops. Like the pages of a beloved children’s book magically brought to life as the animators it seems, have poured their hearts and souls into the ink and paint that brought this film to life. It was a true pleasure to watch an animated film of this caliber, and I would enthusiastically include it in any discussion about Spirited Away, The Wind Rises, Ponyo and The Secret World of Arrietty. Though ? and this is my only complaint ? I did find the over two-hour running time a bit excessive. The film quickly establishes its themes, and then unfortunately labors on them during the 2nd act. The Tale of The Princess Kaguya is another great example of why animation isn’t just for kids. This film expertly communicates complex emotional conflicts between its beautifully drawn lead characters. While never forgetting to entertain, and use a rich palette of colors and animation styles to properly do this ancient story justice. This movie is a testament to the power of hand-drawn cartoons, in that it requires the audience to unwittingly participate. Like the difference between a good book, and the movie adaptation, you’re not given all the visual information in each frame. When Princess Kaguya runs away from home, all we really see are blurred fast-moving rough sketches of her white and red clothes, contrasting with the thickly drawn dark lines of the field around her. But the way it’s drawn, and the speed it moves, tells us a lot about her emotion state. We automatically fill in the blanks, and in doing so, connect with the story even more. That simple stroke of the pen can ignite an audience’s imagination, and director Isao Takahata and his team exploit this perfectly to deliver a truly moving and beautiful film.
Is this the English dub version. The amount of emotion i got from this movie and this ending song... Makes me my heart in peace... These is beyond human feelings, a scene that supposed to symbol the end, death, oblivion, yet a joyfull tune, beside the fact that these celestials clearly harbor no bad feelings or anything potentially corrupted as humans do, there is a hidden message in the song, not all ends are supposed to be sad, even oblivion, a poetic beauty is certainly within it. こんな素晴らしい作品を作った高畑監督は当時７７歳. 残念ながら高畑監督は亡くなられましたがこの作品を見た多くの方々はこの作品に影響を受けると思う. 日本人なら誰でも知っている竹取物語.それを高畑監督の解釈で作られたのは素晴らしい. これ生で聞けるなんていいなぁ…. The rough style of the hand drawn animation is stunning, every scene is like watching an old children's book come to life, in the most gorgeous way. A treat to the eyes. The storyis a retelling of an old Japanese folk tale. It has some very moving qualities, even for outsiders to the culture. It makes you care deeply for the characters, and it's sad to see it end. I could have watched an extra hour of it without complaining. A beautiful melancholic feeling remains in place for so long after watching this piece. Lovely, and an absolute must see. 10/10.

Although I was chuffed when Big Hero 6 walked away with the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at this years' ceremony, my joy was short- lived when I realised I hadn't seen any other contender in the category. Yes, not even How to Train Your Dragon 2. One excuse was that The Tale of the Princess Kaguya hadn't been released in the UK yet, even though it had been floating around cinemas across the world for the past couple of years. Now released and featuring an English-dubbed cast consisting of Chloe Grace Moretz, James Caan, and Lucy Liu, it was time for redemption, and to watch what once slipped through my fingers. Or eyes. You know what I mean.

I don't get how people get so touched and love films that have a lot of drama with a basic storyline and pointless ending. Some nice visuals, but not stunning. Once upon time, in a galaxy far, far away, Mr Bamboo cutter, voiced by Sonny Corleone himself, James Caan, finds the tiniest of children hidden in a magical bamboo shoot and decides to take her under his, and his wife's, wing, raising her like their own and naming her Princess, due to her ability to grow at the speed of knots and develop much quicker than that of a mortal human. One day, Mr Bamboo cutter finds gold and cloth of fine quality in the same place he found his beloved Princess, and decides that she must be moved to the capital in order to fulfill her fate of nobility and become a real-life princess. First off, the film looks beautiful. In terms of effort and sheer elbow-grease the film must have required from the makers, it deserves a standing ovation, and I'm rather glad it got recognised by the Oscars, albeit losing out to the much more mainstream Big Hero 6. Each scene looks like it should be paused, printed out, and shoved in the Louvre for close examination. It is simply a wonder to behold. Now on to the story. Imagine the wonder of Pans Labyrinth. but set in the delicate world of a U rated movie; that's what came to mind during the course of Tale's simply glorious story that deals with all the key subjects of childhood, moving home, arranged marriage, and finally, fulfilling your destiny. The length of 137 minutes for an animated movie might be questionable, with the film suffering slightly during the half-way mark, but sticking with it results in one of the most heartbreaking, yet inevitable, endings of an animated movie you may ever see.
