It's the earliest indication that the writers are creating straw men to make their points. Speaking of men, the only two "good" male characters are shown to be easy victims of "brainwashing" into their "true natures" as men, which of course involves aggression and violence towards women. The director has stated she wants the audience to "feel seen." I didn't feel seen. I just felt misrepresented by two-dimensional women. The characters are so insufferable that their plight means nothing. Obviously they're meant to be the heroines, and we're supposed to root for them because they're outspoken against white men and they STAND UP FOR THEIR SISTERS. That is literally where the characterization ends; no one bothered to give them personalities. They are all slightly different shades of the same person. At one point, one girl apologizes to her friend for dragging her boyfriend along everywhere and says "I like it best when it's just us four girls." I must not be a feminist if I enjoy hanging out with my boyfriend! (Side note: in the trivia section, it's stated the stage performance in this film was intended to be the "feminist answer to the misogynistic Mean Girls." You know, Mean Girls. the movie about women becoming comfortable with their true selves and learning to love one another as they are, instead of competing and hating. Again, point: missed.) But let's get into this movie's most egregious offence, which is that it's not even high quality horror. I love horror and watch it almost exclusively. This is bad horror. Dollar store bad. It's cheap with the scares, and for all its attempted subversions, it's really bland and basic. Filmmakers like Jordan Peele have proven recently that it's possible to address serious social themes while terrifying your audience. To do this, the writing needs to be strong, the acting emotive, and the directing creative. This movie has none of those elements. So, yeah. I hated this movie. I'm glad others hate it as well. Audiences recognize pandering nonsense when they see it. Hopefully this doesn't do damage to the marketability of female writer/directors. we do need them.

The Apple TV 4K is here, and it has both 4K resolution (as the name implies) and HDR support, which means it can work with the latest TVs, projectors and content formats for better pictures, brighter colors and generally improved visuals. But neither 4K nor HDR are new tricks, and in fact this basically means Apple is catching up with a mature field where streaming customers have a lot of existing options. Apple TV is late to this particular party, and joins Roku, Amazon, Google and Nvidia with set-top boxes that do both 4K and HDR streaming. In fact, when the new redesigned Apple TV launched in October, 2015, the Roku 4 already offered 4K video, and the second-generation Fire TV also debuted late in 2015 packing 4K capabilities. So how does Apples first foray into 4K stack up to the rest of the field? Pretty well, since it offers both Dolby Vision and HDR10 support for compatible 4K TVs and display hardware, which is standard for the industry. It also automatically optimizes itself for the attached display, which is another feature thats essentially table stakes at this stage. Price-wise, its more expensive than the Fire TV, which is 89. 99 (though currently unavailable, with a new version reportedly set to release soon. Amazon is also said to be building a 4K version of its Fire TV Stick, which would probably sell somewhere around the 40 range. Rokus 4K streaming devices start at 69. 99, but youll have to get the 89. 99 model to get HDR, too. Shield TV starts at 199. 99, and the Google Chromecast Ultra is 69. Compare all of those to Apples new Apple TV 4K at 179 to start with 32GB on board, and 199 for the higher capacity version with 64GB, and you can see there are a lot more inexpensive routes to 4K HDR streaming video. Thats where Apples other differentiators come in: The biggest might be the fact that its going to get 4K movies from iTunes, with free upgrades for existing content owned by users who previously purchased 1080p HD versions (provided 4K is available. Also, Apple wont be charging more for 4K movie purchases on iTunes, which is a great purchase incentive. Apple is also getting 4K Netflix and Amazon Prime video content, which would be a strength over competitors if it wasnt present. And ? and this is key ? Apple is getting support for live sports coming later this year, which is a very attractive option for set-top streamers looking to get access to premium, ultra high resolution video. Apples TV app, which provides a unified interface for finding content across services, should also act as an incentive. Another potential benefit to keep in mind: Apple has reportedly been gearing up to make a big play in original video content. That could result in an even stronger library that you cant get anywhere else. Its not a guaranteed thing, of course, since its still a plan thats in progress, but it could end up being another solid differentiator. A new 4K James Bond movie is a heck of a purchase incentive, after all. In the end, Apples content deals and ability to minimize the time a user spends hunting around to find what they need will be the deciding factor to the Apple 4K TVs success versus the rest of the field. If you just want 4K HDR, and youre happy with Amazon, Netflix and Google Play, there are more affordable options out there. But if you trust Apples ability to do more with its ecosystem advantage, the new Apple TV could emerge as a clear category leader.

The box The new Apple TV is a small, glossy black box that sits under your TV. Its not quite as small as the previous Apple TV, as its a third taller, but its about the same size as every other streaming-media box available. Setup Setting it up is quite straightforward. Plug in the power cable and hook it up to your TV using an HDMI cable. One isnt supplied in the box, neither is an ethernet cable. Sadly, even if you buy it from the Apple Store, the Apple TV does not come pre-configured with your Apple ID. Amazon does this with the Fire TV and Apple should too. You have two options to set up the software. You can use an iPad or iPhone to setup the Wi-Fi and iTunes accounts, or manually enter your details with the remote. Remote-based setup was straightforward, but entering text was tedious. Using an iPad the setup stalled the first time meaning I had to start all over again. But when it works its simply a quick tap of the tablet or smartphone on the top of the box then follow the instructions on the device. Five minutes and youre done. Once setup is done, youre on your own. Theres no quick tutorial or help and theres quite a lot hidden behind the scenes. For example, double tapping the “home” button, which is actually the one with a TV screen icon on it, takes you to a menu of recently used apps so you can swap between running apps. Its unlikely to occur to you to try it; I did it by accident the first time. The top part of the remote is a touch pad and acts as one large button when pressed. It connects to the Apple TV via Bluetooth and has an IR blaster for controlling the volume on your TV or amp, which should automatically just work, unless you have to manually programme it as I did with my Sony amp. Swiping, swiping and more swiping To navigate the interface, swipe, select the app and press the touch pad down to fire it up, or select content from the top shelf. Quick swipes scroll with a bit of momentum, you can tap one side or another to move one step left, right, up or down and press down to select. Move your finger on the touchpad and a movie poster moves around slightly as if it the cursor is stuck on it before the selector zips off to the next movie along. Its visually attractive but I found it didnt make using it any easier ? in fact, it actually inhibited quick selections. Hold the Siri button to start up voice control. You can launch apps, ask simple questions ? such as: “Whats the weather like? ” ? and search for movies and TV shows, but it doesnt let you search for music or anything else. The clever bit is the breakdown of search into different types. For instance, hitting the button and saying “Archer” brings up all seasons of Archer from the iTunes store and Netflix in the UK (more services in the US. Its simple and works well. More advanced searches such as “Pierce Brosnan movies” followed by “Only the good ones” shows the depths of the voice control. It works well. Manually browsing content is a lot slower and less satisfying. Apple plus third-parties The top-shelf displays content from the selected app, in this case from iTunes movies, but apps such as Netflix can show your recently watched history. Photograph: Apple Content on the Apple TV is broadly divided into things provided by Apple and third-party stuff. In the Apple camp is access to the iTunes store for movies and TV shows, Apple Music or your iCloud Music library, iCloud Photos and the App Store. Its very clear when you start using Apples services that many of them are unfinished. Those that Apple has spent time and attention on ? the movies and TV shows from the iTunes store ? are very good. Siri works well, its slick and if youre plugged into Apples ecosystem, its fantastic. But the Apple TVs music app is so basic its frustrating to use. It feels like something from 2006, scrolling through massive lists, swiping over and over with no way to quickly skip or search. Siri just says no thank you. I have a large music library within iTunes Match and it took me, literally, about five minutes to scroll from AC/DC to ZZ Top. Once youve got to the right artist, album selection is fine, but skipping tracks is laborious. Select, scroll, select again. Theres no one button or gesture to get you to the next track. Its made worse because you can play music in the background while doing other things. You can pause and play, but if you want to change the track youve got to dig all the way back into the music app. Apps The one big thing the Apple TV has going for it is the entrenched iOS developer community. Other boxes, such as Amazons Fire TV, have apps but no other has the draw that the Apple TV does for developers to create bespoke apps for it. Apps range from YouTube and Now TV to Netflix ? which integrates with Siri search ? to shopping apps, weather apps, apps for working out and apps for hotel bookings. The BBC iPlayer isnt available yet. Theres no ITV Player, All 4, Google Play or Amazon Prime Video. The list of apps is only likely to expand, and while you might not end up wanting to shop on your TV, its just the tip of the iceberg if the iOS App Store is any indication. Games The Apple TV is about as powerful as an iPad Air 2 and so supports games with a similar level of graphical quality. Apple calls them “console quality”; some such as Galaxy on Fire, look good. Others are simply cutesy games. Controlling them using the remote is either a Wii-like experience, swinging the remote around like a baseball bat for example, or a swiping and clicking affair. I found neither particularly satisfying, wanting dedicated, responsive buttons for arcade games and quickly growing tired of motion games. You can connect third-party controllers to turn it into a makeshift console, but not every game supports it. The strange thing is you can connect up to three controllers and a remote, but not more than one remote, which makes Wii Tennis analogues out of the question. Two-player games such as Crossy Road, which allows you to use an iPad or iPhone as a second controller, were surprisingly good at a party. Games typically download quickly, but I found some graphically intensive games constantly had to download something. Before you start the app, again when you try to change level. Guests couldnt figure it out until I explained that it was a touch pad and that you had to press not tap it. The menu button is a back button and works as it does on Android or Windows Phone. The home button is the one with the TV screen logo on it. The Apple Remote app doesnt work with the new Apple TV. Music is output in 5. 1 surround sound, not just stereo, if you have a surround sound system. A hand strap for the remote is available, which you will need if you have kids and motion games. Theres no 4K support, which isnt a problem now, but may be in the next couple of years. You can scrub through a video or music by moving your finger on the remote. Saying “what did he say” to Siri will skip back 10 seconds and put on subtitles for video. Price The fourth-generation Apple TV costs 129 with 32GB of storage and 169 for 64GB of storage. For comparison, the Amazon Fire TV with 4K costs 80 the Roku 3 costs 100 and the Google Chromecast 30. Verdict The Apple TV is not fully baked. The video parts are excellent, but the available content is constrained in the UK. The music app is poor, the remote app doesnt work and other bits are just not ready. Bill Roberson/Digital Trends When we reviewed the new Apple TV 4K last month, we raved about its incredible user interface, its lightning-quick processor, its improved search function, and its impressive performance when watching content in Ultra HD or high dynamic range ( HDR. Unfortunately, there was one nagging issue we just couldnt move past (in addition to the streamers lofty price point. The Apple TV 4K automatically forces HDR-capable televisions into HDR mode, which is awesome if youre watching HDR-optimized content, but not so awesome when youre watching pretty much anything else. Since the vast majority of movies and TV shows on most popular streaming platforms arent currently available in HDR, this led to some noticeable detail clipping and dimming issues. The Apple TV also automatically converted content to 60 frames per second (fps) which produced some annoying judder effects at times. Today, Apple announced that the next Apple TV update ? tvOS 11. 2 ? will fix this problem by adding a new “match content” menu in the Settings app, which does exactly what youd expect, matching frame rate and dynamic range (SDR vs. HDR10 vs. Dolby Vision) when streaming video from any compatible app. Users can actually set frame rate matching and dynamic range matching individually within the options. We dont yet know which apps will be compatible. The system will still default to 60 fps and Dolby Vision HDR with content matching activated ( head here for the nitty-gritty details) but you can go a step further and select specific combinations (i. e., 60 fps SDR or 30 fps HDR) if you have something particular in mind. Its entirely possible that the “forced HDR effect” is negligible on your television, in which case the update may not make much difference. We dont yet know when tvOS 11. 2 will arrive, so we cant draw any real conclusions yet. Right now, if youre on the fence about which 4K streamer to buy, wed suggest the Roku Ultra or the Roku Streaming Stick. That said, the Apple TV 4K has a lot of potential, and for those with iPhones and Mac computers, it can certainly be a valuable addition to your home ecosystem. Not only that, the Game has to output HDR AND a 4K signal otherwise HDR will not work - I am assuming most Devs that actually do HDR will be sending fake (upscaled) 4K signal to make the HDR work as the PRO can't play Native 4K games. 3 years ago In other words, unlessyou have the newest most badass 4K TV your regular ordinary everyday TV will show exactly what you see now. 3 years ago hi Well the thing is that even if a tv can display those resolutions for video games it doesnt mean the brand is good! The brand is what makes the tv really worth buying like Element brand and probably Samsung and probably LG; which Ive not owned! 3 years ago.
