Movie Name: Panipat Cast: Arjun Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Kriti Sanon Director: Ashutosh Gowariker Back in 1994, Sanjay Khan directed The Great Maratha for Doordarshan. For most of us, it was the first visual depiction of a battle that could not be won with flying arrows that emit electricity, as we saw in BR Chopras Mahabharata or Ramanand Sagars Ramayana. That, and Jhansi Ki Rani, the Varsha Usgaonkar-starrer, which also reigned in the 90s. Nearly 25 years later, Ashutosh Gowarikers Panipat tugs on those nostalgia strings. He has everything that we saw in The Great Maratha, which could have been an advantage, given we lap up everything 90s these days. The problem, however, is that our eyes are also 25 years mature. And now, Gowarikers presentation seems lacklustre, borderline cartoonish due to terrible CGI work, and eventually, just not magnanimous enough. All the comparisons with Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat the Panipat trailer had to face right after its release are justified. But in Gowarikers defence, Maratha warriors dressed alike, so Ranveer Singhs Bajirao and Arjun Kapoors Sadashiv Rao Bhau look similar (also, Sadashiv was Bajirao's nephew. Kriti Sanons Parvati Bai will remind you of Priyanka Chopras Kashi Bai. For she cannot be seen wearing Alexander McQueen, can she? Watch the trailer here: But when Sanjay Dutts Ahmad Shah Abdali reminds you of Ranveers Alauddin Khilji, your brows crease. You eventually forgive it because Dutt owns the character and at no point does he allow Khilji to seep into Abdali. The streak of madness all Mughal, Afghan and by extension, Muslim rulers of yore are sketched with in Bollywood, however, remains. Abdali is as barbaric as Khilji when he crushes his own brothers skull as punishment for plotting to kill him and usurp the throne. Afghan soldiers are crude, they make weird ghastly faces, and seem to enjoy inflicting pain on the battlefield, just as weve seen in Padmaavat, or even Kesari. The Marathas are heroes, needless to say. They are protectors, not just fighters. They have a code of honour. Never do they stab an unsuspecting Afghan soldier in the back, while the Afghans do it at random until the enemy, Sadashiv, falls. Sadashiv, the Maratha, falls a martyr at war. He is, after all, fighting for his country. I cant believe the film is about to come out. I shot this in January when we were about to begin shooting again after the new year break. its been a journey and a half. So grateful for the chance to play Bhau. 48 hours to go. Arjun Kapoor ( arjunk26) December 4, 2019 Arjun tries, but he fails to deliver the whole of what was expected of him. He forever falls short. Just like his trapezoid breastplate that falls short of his broad (really broad) torso. His speeches fail to arouse any emotion, even though Sadashiv Rao Bhau was historically known to be a charismatic leader, only second to Bajirao. Kriti Sanon shines even in a relatively small role. Her eyes speak, both in grief and happiness. She is strong and draws strength from the pureness of her love for Sadashiv. Even if that means to pick up a sword in the hour of need and discover an accidental warrior in herself. She flinches, almost gives up but fights on, and ultimately as she stares at the bodies she managed to slaughter, she is engulfed by a sense of guilt, fear and despair all at the same time. Arjun Kapoor ( arjunk26) December 3, 2019 The Third Battle Of Panipat, fought on January 14, 1761, stands out in history because of the war strategies used. Abdalis camel-mounted canons, called zamburak, were unheard of back then and were effective in dismembering the Maratha line-up simply because the weapons were not stationary. On the other hand, Sadashivs European style of fighting and use of canons under the expert leadership of Ibrahim Khan Gardi, played to perfection by Nawab Shah, managed to throw Abdalis troop off. All of this has been shown vividly, and thats where Gowarikers craftsmanship as a filmmaker shows. He may not do grandeur as well as Sanjay Leela Bhansali, but he can do war. Unveiling Parvati Bai from #Panipat! In cinemas on 6th December! duttsanjay @kritisanon @AshGowariker #SunitaGowariker @RohitShelatkar @Shibasishsarkar @agppl @visionworldfilm @RelianceEnt @ZeeMusicCompany Arjun Kapoor ( arjunk26) November 30, 2019 Panipat, however, has two villains, and none of them is Abdali. It is language and history. Ranveers Bajirao had a Marathi twang that the actor honed. Arjun remains a Bandra boy throughout, save a few "ho. me yeto" and "maiti mala. None of this is Arjuns fault though, for Abdalis limited Urdu is barely Lucknawi, forget Afghani. And then theres history. Its not possible to go out and say the Marathas won the Third Battle Of Panipat (yet, but soon, maybe) but it is possible to paint a haar-kar-jeetne-wale-ko-Maratha-kehte-hai picture. And thats what Gowariker did. We saw that in Bhansali's glorification of Rajput valour in the face of death at the hands of Khilji just last year in Padmaavat. In Panipat, Abdali is shown crumbling under pressure, his legs trembling in fear of these glorious warriors making music with their swords, his troop fleeing only for him to drag them back, slice a few heads to both satiate his own bloodthirst as well as help release his frustration. Sadashiv dies, we knew that. Abdali wins, we knew that too. But we have no way to find out if he wrote an appreciation letter for Sadashiv, addressed to Balaji Baji Rao Peshwa (Mohnish Behl. And suddenly because of that, Gowarikers Panipat becomes a happy ending wala film. Were going with 2. 5 stars out of 5. Panipat Movie Synopsis PANIPAT is the story of one of the most important chapters of history. The year is 1760. The Marathas under Sadashivrao Bhau (Arjun Kapoor) finally annexe the Udgiri Fort in present-day southern Maharashtra and thereby finish the Nizamshahi rule for good. The Marathas have now occupied most of India. Nana PANIPAT is the story of one of the most important chapters of history. Nana Saheb Peshwa (Mohnish Bahl) is very happy with the developments and especially with Sadashiv. Nana Saheb's wife Gopika Bai (Padmini Kolhapure) however feels insecure with her hubbys fondness for Sadashiv. At her insistence, Sadashiv is given the responsibility of handling the treasury. Sadashiv is shocked at this development as he has always been a warrior. Nevertheless he accepts this change of duty. He also gets to spend time with Parvati Bai (Kriti Sanon) a physician. Both fall in love and get married. Meanwhile, while checking the finances, Sadashiv realises that the kingdoms up North are not paying the dues to the Marathas, as they had promised. A message is then sent to all these kings, including Mughal empeor Alamgir II (S M Zaheer. Najib-Ud-Daula (Mantra) is a part of the Mughal court and hes asked to leave. Hes so frustrated with the high handedness of the Marathas that he decides to defeat them once and for all. To do so, he knocks on the doors of Ahmed Shah Abdali (Sanjay Dutt) the Afghan ruler of Kandahar. At first, Abdali declines since he realises that Najib-Ud-Daula is seeking his help for his selfish gains. But then he also realises that if he manages to capture a large part of India, it would add to his prowess. Hence he sets off to India. The Marathas find out about Abdali's plans and that he is approaching with 1 lakh soldiers. Sadashiv however feels that despite having lesser number of soldiers, the Marathas can still defeat Abdali. Nana Saheb gives Sadashiv the responsibility of going up North to stop Abdali with 40, 000 soldiers. On the way, Sadashiv seeks help from various kingdoms and forges alliances. Most of them agree to be on his side and provide armymen. Shuja-Ud-Daula (Kunal R Kapoor) is the Wazir of Awadh and Sadashiv asks for his help as well. In return, he agrees to make him the Wazir of Delhi once Abdali is defeated. Shuja-Ud-Daula asks for this agreement in writing. The Marathas agree to do so and said that theyll return in a few days with the written assurance. In the interim, Abdalis men meet Shuja-Ud-Daula. They too make the same offer that hell be made Delhis Wazir and whats more, they get the written agreement with them. Shuja-Ud-Daula hence joins Abdali. This serves a blow for Sadashiv since Shuja-Ud-Daulas alliance would have helped him immensely. Nevertheless, he agrees to fight, come what may. What happens next forms the rest of the film. [7] 8] The Third Battle of Panipat took place on 14 January 1761 at Panipat, about 97 km (60 miles) north of Delhi, between the Maratha Empire and the invading Afghan army of the King of Afghans, Ahmad Shah Abdali, supported by three Indian allies ? the Rohilla Najib-ud-daulah, Afghans of the Doab region, and Shuja-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh. The Maratha army was led by Sadashivrao Bhau who was third in authority after the Chhatrapati (Maratha King) and the Peshwa (Maratha Prime Minister. The main Maratha army was stationed in Deccan with the Peshwa. Militarily, the battle pitted the artillery and cavalry of the Marathas against the heavy cavalry and mounted artillery ( zamburak and jezail) of the Afghans and Rohillas led by Abdali and Najib-ud-Daulah, both ethnic Afghans. The battle is considered one of the largest and most eventful fought in the 18th century, 9] and it has perhaps the largest number of fatalities in a single day reported in a classic formation battle between two armies. The specific site of the battle itself is disputed by historians, but most consider it to have occurred somewhere near modern-day Kaalaa Aamb and Sanauli Road. The battle lasted for several days and involved over 125, 000 troops. Protracted skirmishes occurred, with losses and gains on both sides. The forces led by Ahmad Shah Durrani came out victorious after destroying several Maratha flanks. The extent of the losses on both sides is heavily disputed by historians, but it is believed that between 60, 000?70, 000 were killed in fighting, while the numbers of injured and prisoners taken vary considerably. According to the single best eyewitness chronicle?the bakhar by Shuja-ud-Daulah's Diwan Kashi Raj?about 40, 000 Maratha prisoners were slaughtered in cold blood the day after the battle. [8] Grant Duff includes an interview of a survivor of these massacres in his History of the Marathas and generally corroborates this number. Shejwalkar, whose monograph Panipat 1761 is often regarded as the single best secondary source on the battle, says that "not less than 100, 000 Marathas (soldiers and non-combatants) perished during and after the battle. 7] The result of the battle was the temporary halting of further Maratha advances in the north and destabilisation of their territories for roughly ten years. This period is marked by the rule of Peshwa Madhavrao, who is credited with the revival of Maratha domination following the defeat at Panipat. In 1771, ten years after Panipat, he sent a large Maratha army into northern India in an expedition which re-established Maratha domination in that area and punished refractory powers that had either sided with the Afghans, such as the Rohillas, or had shaken off Maratha domination after Panipat. [10] But their success was short lived. Crippled by Madhavrao's untimely death at the age of 28, infighting ensued among Maratha chiefs soon after, and they ultimately met their final blow at the hands of the British in 1818. [11] Background Decline of the Mughal Empire The 27-year Mughal-Maratha war (1680?1707) led to rapid territorial loss of the Maratha Empire to the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. However after his death in 1707, this process reversed following the Mughal Succession War between the sons of Aurangzeb. By 1712, Marathas quickly started retaking their lost lands. Under Peshwa Baji Rao, Gujarat, Malwa and Rajputana came under Maratha control. Finally, in 1737, Baji Rao defeated the Mughals on the outskirts of Delhi and brought much of the former Mughal territories south of Agra under Maratha control. Baji Rao's son Balaji Baji Rao further increased the territory under Maratha control by invading Punjab in 1758. Raghunathrao's letter to the Peshwa, 4 May 1758. “ Lahore, Multan and other subahs on eastern side of Attock are under our rule for the most part, and places which have not come under our rule we shall soon bring under us. Ahmad Shah Durrani's son Timur Shah Durrani and Jahan Khan have been pursued by our troops, and their troops completely looted. Both of them have now reached Peshawar with a few broken troops. So Ahmad Shah Durrani has returned to Kandahar with some 12-14 thousand broken troops... Thus all have risen against Ahmad who has lost control over the region. We have decided to extend our rule up to Kandahar. ” This brought the Marathas into direct confrontation with the Durrani empire of Ahmad Shah Abdali (also known as Ahmad Shah Durrani. In 1759 he raised an army from the Pashtun and Baloch tribes and made several gains against the smaller Maratha garrisons in Punjab. He then joined with his Indian allies?the Rohilla Afghans of the Gangetic Doab?forming a broad coalition against the Marathas. To counter this, Raghunathrao supposed to go north to handle the situation. Raghunathrao asked for large amount and an army, which was denied by Sadashivrao Bhau, his cousin and Diwan of Peshwa, so he declined to go. Sadashivrao Bhau was there upon made commander in chief of the Maratha Army, under whom the Battle of Panipat was fought. [12] The Marathas, under the command of Sadashivrao Bhau, responded by gathering an army of between 45, 000?60, 000, which was accompanied by roughly 200, 000 non-combatants, a number of whom were pilgrims desirous of making pilgrimages to Hindu holy sites in northern India. The Marathas started their northward journey from Patdur on 14 March 1760. Both sides tried to get the Nawab of Awadh, Shuja-ud-Daulah, into their camp. By late July Shuja-ud-Daulah made the decision to join the Afghan-Rohilla coalition, preferring to join what was perceived as the "army of Islam. This was strategically a major loss for the Marathas, since Shuja provided much-needed finances for the long Afghan stay in North India. It is doubtful whether the Afghan-Rohilla coalition would have the means to continue their conflict with the Marathas without Shuja's support. citation needed] Rise of the Marathas Grant Duff, describing the Maratha army: 13] The lofty and spacious tents, lined with silks and broadcloths, were surmounted by large gilded ornaments, conspicuous at a distance. Vast numbers of elephants, flags of all descriptions, the finest horses, magnificently caparisoned. seemed to be collected from every quarter. it was an imitation of the more becoming and tasteful array of the Mughuls in the zenith of their glory. The Marathas had gained control of a considerable part of India in the intervening period (1712?1757. In 1758 they nominally occupied Delhi, captured Lahore and drove out Timur Shah Durrani, 1] the son and viceroy of the Afghan ruler, Ahmad Shah Abdali. This was the high-water mark of Maratha expansion, where the boundaries of their empire extended north of the Sindhu river all the way down south to northern Kerala. This territory was ruled through the Peshwa, who talked of placing his son Vishwasrao on the Mughal throne. However, Delhi still remained under the control of Mughals, key Muslim intellectuals including Shah Waliullah and other Muslim clergies in India were frightened at these developments. In desperation they appealed to Ahmad Shah Abdali, the ruler of Afghanistan, to halt the threat. [14] Prelude Ahmad Shah Durrani ( Ahmad Shah Abdali) angered by the news from his son and his allies, was unwilling to allow the Marathas' spread go unchecked. By the end of 1759 Abdali with his Afghan tribes, his Baloch allies, and his Rohilla ally Najib Khan had reached Lahore as well as Delhi and defeated the smaller enemy garrisons. Ahmed Shah, at this point, withdrew his army to Anupshahr, on the frontier of the Rohilla country, where he successfully convinced the Nawab of Oudh Shuja-ud-Daula to join his alliance against the Marathas. The Marathas had earlier helped Safdarjung (father of Shuja) in defeating Rohillas in Farrukhabad. [10] The Marathas under Sadashivrao Bhau responded to the news of the Afghans' return to North India by raising an army, and they marched North. Bhau's force was bolstered by some Maratha forces under Holkar, Scindia, Gaikwad and Govind Pant Bundele. Suraj Mal (the Jat ruler of Bharatpur) also had joined Bhausaheb initially. This combined army captured the Mughal capital, Delhi, from an Afghan garriso
Afghans are concerned over 'misrepresentation' of Ahmad Shah Abdali, the founder of modern Afghanistan, in the new film. 'Panipat' is based on a 1761 battle north of Delhi between an the Indian Maratha empire and an Afghan army led by Ahmad Shah Abdali [Getty Images] Afghans have expressed disappointment over the portrayal of the country's founding father in the latest Bollywood period drama, Panipat, set in the 18th century. The film depicts the 1761 Battle of Panipat fought between the forces of Afghan ruler Ahmad Shah Abdali and?the army of Marathas, a Hindu community mainly based in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. Modern Panipat is a district in the northern state of Haryana, about 85km (53 miles) from capital New Delhi. Abdali, a hero to many Afghans, was the founder of the Durrani Empire and? leader of the Pashtun tribe ?who defeated the Maratha army. To most Indians, he is a fierce invader?who killed thousands of Maratha soldiers. Panipat is the latest Bollywood film to attract criticism for its misrepresentation of historical characters, especially Muslim rulers from the medieval period. Another Bollywood film Padmaavat?(2018)?portrayed Alauddin Khilji, a Muslim king of Afghan origin who ruled Delhi in the 12th century, as a "savage" who "gnaws meat off the bone. following the most prevalent stereotypes about Muslims, according to critics. "Abdali fits the Alauddin Khilji mould of 'otherness. tall, imposing, and dismissive of Hindu martial prowess. The two manifest the stock Muslim 'invader' tropes that dominate the 21st-century Hindu psyche. wrote film critic and columnist Kaveree Bamzai on The Print website. "As one of the Panipat posters on Abdali says: Death strikes where his shadow falls. Similarly, Kesari - released earlier this year and based on the Battle of Saragarhi in 1897 between Sikh soldiers and Afghans - was also criticised?for?portraying the Afghans as violent invaders. 'Insensitive/distorted depiction' These films have offended many Afghans, such as Hassan Amin Shoob, a Kabul-based filmmaker. He said Panipat is yet another film that "failed?to capture the true essence of Afghan history and values. "India's Panipat is undoubtedly of a lucrative nature, focused mainly on the Hindu aspect of the events. The director's take on history is a failed attempt, but a make-me-happy entertainment for the Hindus. Shoob told Al Jazeera. "Ahmad Shah Durrani is universally acknowledged by historians as a man of wisdom. " On Sunday, a statement released by the Afghan foreign ministry said Idrees Zaman, the acting foreign minister, met with Indian envoy to Kabul Vinay Kumar to discuss the "issue of Afghan sensitivities" surrounding the film. Even before the film's release, the Afghan embassy in New Delhi had written a letter to the Indian government to raise its concerns over misrepresentation of the Afghan ruler. "Since the film is related to former Afghan emperor Ahmad Shah Abdali, any insensitive/distorted depiction of his character might provoke emotions of Afghans which could be unfairly exploited by others to adversely affect the trust and harmony that exists so well among the people of two countries. the letter stated. India has had friendly ties with Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban in 2001, with New Delhi being a major financial backer of the Western-backed government in Kabul. India has also earned the goodwill of the Afghans by carrying out major infrastructure projects in the war-torn country, including building the new parliament in Kabul. Bollywood films and Hindi-language soap operas are very popular in Afghanistan, which is among the biggest markets for the Hindi film industry. Afghans demand review of film Nafees Ur Rehman, a Pashtun researcher from neighbouring Pakistan whose work partially focuses on the vilification of Pashtuns and Afghans in colonial literature, said he decided not to watch Panipat. "It is fine to take some liberties while making historical films but these liberties should be consistent with the historical accounts and shouldn't challenge them. he told Al Jazeera. "If I have to learn history, I can look up various authentic books, and I would prefer to watch a comedy for entertainment. But not Panipat movie. " In 2007, Afghanistan banned the Bollywood film, Kabul Express - a story about three journalists in post-Taliban Afghanistan - because parts of it were deemed offensive to the?Shia Muslim Hazara ethnic minority. "Bollywood films most of the time vilify and stereotype Muslims. It was easier for them to find proxy in Pakistanis to portray Muslims that suited their agenda; but with the Afghans, they have found a new villain. said Rehman. "I think this is a result of widespread religious nationalism. And as of now, such kind of nationalism demands to find 'heroes' among 'yourselves' and 'villains' in 'others. The recent trend shows Bollywood is playing to such an audience. he said. Afghans also took to Twitter to express their disappointment in the film, including?Naseem Sharifi, Consul General of Afghanistan in Mumbai. " PrimeMinisterModi it's honor to know & have met you on various occasions. Our request is to put da [sic] new movie #panipat under review to make sure that because of a few that the filmmakers are earning? we don't lose our decade worth of hard work & efforts as friendly nations. Sharifi said in a tweet. Indian film industry is tarnishing the history of Afghans. #Panipat ? Mizrab Fatima ( MizrabF) December 8, 2019 India has shown Ahmed Shah in a negative role, which has disappointed many Afghans and Pashtuns around the world. #Panipat ? Sehar Naz ( Patriot_SN1) December 8, 2019 In an interview on December 2, Panipat director Ashutosh Gowariker said that even though he respects the feelings of Afghans, Abdali did "invade us a few times. "For me, this film is not about the Hindu-Muslim battle, it's not. It's about stopping an invader, protecting your land, it is what the patriotic theme of the film is. he told? The Film Companion, a web channel that promotes Indian cinema. Gowariker, whose 2001 epic Lagaan was nominated for the Oscars, claimed he retained the dignity of Abdali's character in his film. Jawad, a photojournalist based in Kabul, echoed the concerns raised by Rehman, saying he was disturbed by how "Islam was portrayed the religion of violence and fear" in the film. "In one scene of the movie, it shows Abdali praying and immediately after he finishes the prayer, he is shown killing people. he said. "Nowadays, people do not have time to read history, they believe what they see. I wish the Indian filmmaker focused on real history, instead of being biased towards Afghans and Muslims. "Abdali is described as a thief and a looter, which is not true. I can understand, for Indians Abdali is an invader but the incidents need to be shown according to the facts, not less not more.
