Has anyone else noticed rogal dorn breaking his stoic attitude when he screams as Urial finally appears from the dark? Could not stop laughing hahaha. For me, one of the most fascinating parts of Middle-earth is the real world connections. It elevates it in a way above other fantasy that it's set in an imaginary past of our world, and not in an imaginary place with no connection to it. I also agree with Tolkien's letter about the tragic lack of truly English faerie stories and heroic legends connected to its own language, land, and history. For reference, I'll copy and paste the relevant section of that letter: But an equally basic passion of mine ab initio was for myth (not allegory! ) and for fairy-story, and above all for heroic legend on the brink of fairy-tale and history, of which there is far too little in the world (accessible to me) for my appetite. I was an undergraduate before thought and experience revealed to me that these were not divergent interests ? opposite poles of science and romance ? but integrally related. I am not 'learned'** in the matters of myth and fairy-story, however, for in such things (as far as known to me) I have always been seeking material, things of a certain tone and air, and not simple knowledge. Also ? and here I hope I shall not sound absurd ? I was from early days grieved by the poverty of my own beloved country: it had no stories of its own (bound up with its tongue and soil), not of the quality that I sought, and found (as an ingredient) in legends of other lands. There was Greek, and Celtic, and Romance, Germanic, Scandinavian, and Finnish (which greatly affected me); but nothing English, save impoverished chap-book stuff. Of course there was and is all the Arthurian world, but powerful as it is, it is imperfectly naturalized, associated with the soil of Britain but not with English; and does not replace what I felt to be missing. For one thing its 'faerie' is too lavish, and fantastical, incoherent and repetitive. For another and more important thing: it is involved in, and explicitly contains the Christian religion. For reasons which I will not elaborate, that seems to me fatal. Myth and fairy-story must, as all art, reflect and contain in solution elements of moral and religious truth (or error), but not explicit, not in the known form of the primary 'real' world. (I am speaking, of course, of our present situation, not of ancient pagan, pre-Christian days. And I will not repeat what I tried to say in my essay, which you read. Do not laugh! But once upon a time (my crest has long since fallen) I had a mind to make a body of more or less connected legend, ranging from the large and cosmogonic, to the level of romantic fairy-story-the larger founded on the lesser in contact with the earth, the lesser drawing splendour from the vast backcloths ? which I could dedicate simply to: to England; to my country. It should possess the tone and quality that I desired, somewhat cool and clear, be redolent of our 'air' (the clime and soil of the North West, meaning Britain and the hither parts of Europe: not Italy or the Aegean, still less the East), and, while possessing (if I could achieve it) the fair elusive beauty that some call Celtic (though it is rarely found in genuine ancient Celtic things), it should be 'high', purged of the gross, and fit for the more adult mind of a land long now steeped in poetry. I would draw some of the great tales in fullness, and leave many only placed in the scheme, and sketched. The cycles should be linked to a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and drama. Absurd. At one point the Anglo-Saxons and their english kingdoms would've had a rich mythology with many of their own legends, comparable to the Norse, Greeks, Japanese, Celtic, etc. It's strange and unfortunate that there's almost nothing left of it. Strange, because despite being christianized earlier than the Anglo-Saxons, the Celtic peoples of Britain still have far more of their old myths and faerie stories preserved. Same with the continental Germanic mythology. It has basically no surviving religious elements, but at least a lot of stories survived as fairy tales, like Grimms and the fragments that Wagner used to make the Ring Cycle. So early Christianization can't be the only explanation for the absence of old English myths and legends. Another is perhaps that so few Anglo-Saxon writings survived. Beowulf, which only a single copy survived, almost qualifies as an English myth, though it's partially christianized and doesn't take place in England. The old English poem Deor references a couple of myths known from the Eddas, though without the Eddas we wouldn't know what it was talking about, and presumably those stories had English variants that are now lost. Same with the reference to Sigurd in Beowulf. The poem of the Finnesburg Fragment was apparently pagan, but as the name implies only a fragment survives. So I think it's entirely possible that at one point works comparable to the Prose and Poetic Eddas did exist for Anglo-Saxon myths, but have since been lost. Perhaps in the Cotton Library Fire of 1731, other similar disasters, or just the decay of time. It's sad and frustrating. (Could there be any hope that such a manuscript did survive and could be rediscovered in the future? Perhaps in some forgotten archive or collection that has been overlooked? Maybe confiscated and now residing in the Vatican's vast vaults? ) Still though, even if the Old English texts were lost, and christians stamped out the worship of the old gods, why weren't the stories and legends of the Anglo Saxon English preserved in some form as fairy tales and folklore? Or perhaps changed to fit a christian worldview, with the deities involved changed, but with the essential story structure the same, from which we could reconstruct the original pagan myths? Like how the Tuatha De Danaan in Ireland are written as superpowered humans, though they were obviously originally pagan deities and this was changed to fit christian sensibilities. Or like the aforementioned German fairy tales. I think the explanation may lie with the Norman Conquest and the adoption of the Arthurian legends as the so-called national mythos. Other discussions on the loss of the old English Mythology that Tolkien grieved blame the Norman Conquest for destroying it, though they don't elaborate on how exactly that happened. I don't know what the source for this is, but I read on Quora somewhere that the Normans pushed the Arthurian stories to remind the Anglo-Saxons that England was not their native home. By framing the Anglo-Saxons as barbaric invaders (like in the story of Hengist and Horsa's Treachery of the Long Knives that almost certainly never happened, and ignoring that the Germanic settlement of Britain began before the Romans left and continued by invitation from the Britons afterward in order to fill the power vacuum) and the local Celtic Britons and their King Arthur as the true heroes and people of the land, they were able to undermine Anglo-Saxon efforts to resist Norman rule based on cultural identity and heritage. By tying French stories to an old Celtic chieftain who apparently dealt a very costly defeat to the Anglo-Saxon invaders (and about which nothing else concrete is known), they were able to ally with the native Britons and undermine the legitimacy of the Anglo-Saxons. Thus, the Arthurian legends have a lot of French and Celtic stories and elements, but little to no Anglo-Saxon/English, in fact the English are villains, despite the stories supposedly being about England. Here's an excellent discussion on the subject: In fact, I'm just going to copy-paste the best answers on the off-chance that the original discussion is lost. I've seen stuff like that happen too many times, you can never be too careful: Being a philologist, Tolkien viewed Anglo-Saxon as the original source of English culture, and thus the correct source for any truly English mythology. It frustrated him that Anglo-Saxon mythology had essentially been obliterated by the Norman conquest. Of course, Tolkien appreciated the Arthur legends at a certain level--he even began an alliterative work called The Fall of Arthur that was recently published by his son. However, he knew that the King Arthur stories were not Anglo-Saxon, nor were they mythology proper (the specificity of the Christian references is one of the things that Tolkien--a Christian himself--believed prevented the Arthur stories from being true mythology). The King Arthur stories have a Celtic ("British"), not an English ("Anglo-Saxon") origin. Presumably "Arthur" was based on a Celtic chieftain. The legends about him were developed in Wales, where Arthur had a close connection to the Otherworld of Welsh mythology. Geoffrey of Monmouth, a Welsh cleric, wrote the first "historical" account of Arthur. The stories were carried to Brittany, the Celtic region of France, from where they were picked up by the non-Breton French. Here Arthur's warriors turned into knights, and the Celtic Gawain was replaced by the French Lancelot du Lake as the foremost member of Arthur's court. The stories then made their way to England, where Thomas Mallory eventually put them into his famous Morte d'Arthur (still a French title). The closest thing to an Anglo-Saxon Arthur story is a Middle English Death of King Arthur which was written in the alliterative Anglo-Saxon poetic style. But Tolkien considered it one of the weaker retellings of the Arthur story, not least because it presents Arthur as an emperor who spends most of the poem fighting the Roman Empire in France. That's certainly not the Arthur we normally imagine! The "traditional English" King Arthur stories, as handed through Mallory, present an Arthur who is a creature of French romance, not English legend. Some modern fantasies have tried to present a more Celtic Arthur, but those stories did not exis
