Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2019 Format: Prime Video Us opens in the year of 1986, with a commercial for the upcoming Hands Across America fundraiser to end hunger and homelessness. (Yes, it truly existed and if you were around then, remember that fiasco? ) A young black couple and their tween daughter Adelaide, venture to a seaside amusement park for a day of family fun. While her mother visits the restroom and her father is playing Whack-A-Mole, Adelaide wanders off. She discovers a vacant house of mirrors with a foreboding, bright yellow sign which reads, "Find Yourself". Naturally, she makes her way inside to explore. While roaming around aimlessly, Adelaide comes faces to face with herself, not a reflection, but a complete replica of herself, right down to her clothing. She is so shocked to her core, that she bolts out of there. The film then picks up at present-day, where Adelaide is now a married mother of two. She and her husband Gabe, are driving to a California beach house, with their children, Zora and Jason. The only problem is, they're travelling to the same beach town where Adelaide's jarring childhood experience occurred, and she is visibly unnerved. The family heads to the beach and meets up with some white, affluent friends. Some cringe-inducing dialogue follows, between two very different families, a wink to Get Out. When the family returns to the house to settle in for the evening, their power is eerily cut off. Upon glancing outside, they notice four figures, clad in red, holding hands, and standing in their driveway. The Wilsons come to the horrific realization that the figures are sinister, doppelgängers of themselves. When the intruders forcefully make their way into the house, Gabe asks them, "Who are you people? " To which Adelaide’s double calmly replies, "We're Americans. " I'm not the type of person who will attack or tell someone they're wrong, when they like or dislike a film. We're all entitled to our opinions, and take away things differently. I truly enjoyed this film, and I purposely steered clear of any spoilers ahead of time. Lupita Nyong'o runs away with the movie and does a phenomenal job while doing it. The cinematography, the score, the pacing, all add to the creepy atmosphere. Elizabeth Moss's supporting performance was also noteworthy and flawless. There is one scene in the film where "F the police" by N. W. A. is blaring onscreen and I, along with a few other members of the audience burst into laughter. To explain further would constitute a spoiler and I don't do spoilers. Lastly, the film relies more on symbolism than logic, so if you're the type of viewer who prefers to have all of the answers by the end credits, then you will most definitely find fault with this film. Yes, there are plot holes, however, that didn't ruin my experience. Bravo, Mr. Peele, you rock.
