Just after posting my thoughts... came this. Thanks ? As for my thoughts, rather unedited but as it might often be the case when purging., It's a long one... ?? A world full of easy answers is a world limited to easy questions. Conversely, the big questions can lead to big discoveries or have us wrestling with yet another paradox. There was a recent TED talk where the host asked the audience for a show of hands for anyone whose had a gut feeling. All hands went up. The question was then posed - How many of you, who having listened to it, were glad that you did? Again all hands went up? How many of you regretted listening to your gut instinct on any occasion? Not a single hand went up. Perhaps it seems rhetorical question to be asking, given what might appear obvious, assuming of course that you might easily imagine yourself there, answering those very questions, however, what was surprising to me was the rubber necking that occurred in the room. Gut feelings - Gut instincts - yes ! Others have them too! Where do you begin to speak of these? Aside from anecdotal reference, its most likely you dont. Its the stuff best left for presenters at TED, if only because our instincts are uniquely our own. These are shaped and honed in our own life school settings. It may start with fight, flight or freeze but may soon develop beyond the immediacy in front of us into something of much more long range potential. We may be at a tipping point very soon with respect to the subject of you and the subject of me. Atheists, even the soft shoe varieties like Sam Harris would have us entertaining the idea that free will is illusory. Visionaries like Elon Musk, would have us entertaining the idea of transhumanism as our only hope to keep us safe from the inevitable realizations of artificial intelligence. He makes the case first for the stick and then with the carrot. There would be big advantages to have the quantum processing powers behind our eye lids, interconnected to our very thoughts. This is a world with interconnected technologies of every type by this point. It is assumed that any manufactured product during this time period must meet a minimum of acceptable standards. Interconnectivity, even at its conceptual minimum, could not have you opt out of the basic package. Its inconceivable that you could know when its safe to cross the street on foot at this point. And why would want to carry that risk? You might cause an accident for someone else. Thats a question of resources. When its a question of resources, its often an untenable question. After all, the value of the many outweighs the value of the few. So then, free will. If it doesnt exist, then by all means, give it away freely. If my paradox, is your paradox? Then may we live with it for as long as we live and for as long as we can.
