While James Glaisher (Eddie Redmayne) did exist and was a meteorologist who took this flight in 1862, his partner was a man, Henry Coxwell. Glaisher did pass out in the balloon and it was Coxwell who climbed up the rigging and saved them 7 miles up in the atmosphere, temperature was around 29 below Centigrade. During WW1, around 50 years later, pilots discovered that around 3 Km high they would start passing out, and could barely make it to 5 Km. That was with controlled flight. Anyway, to make a nice wonder woman story, Coxwell is replaced by a historically non-existent woman so she can climb the rigging, and save the day. Probably with a rare exception it would be 60 years until a woman was in the air.
I seem to come around to this video every year. I love it every time and REALLY want a movie made from this. I first saw it in 2013 and still have hope to see it on the big screen someday. The aeronauts watch free.

Amazon's slaying with their awesome shows (edit: and films) Might as well buys the rights of other books for adaptation like Ender's Game. Looks great. Definitely a must watch. Just too bad about the forced diversity that seems to plague every western movie that comes out these days. Even the historical ones that arent supposed to have them. Who's the chick? The Aeronauts is obviously intended to make the spirit soar, but rather than providing me with an uplifting experience, I was bored by the film. Once our plucky adventurers have risen above the clouds, there is nowhere interesting for the story to go. It would seem that the sky really is the limit. The supposedly tense scenes designed to tap into one's fear of extreme heights did little to make me squirm on the edge of my seat: I couldn't help but picture Redmayne and Jones acting against a green screen for the majority of the 100 minute runtime (although it felt much longer. Numerous earth-bound flashbacks add very little to the story, but do serve to make the film even more soporific. It's also irritating to discover that, although based on actual events, The Aeronauts seeks to rewrite history: in reality, Glaisher's pilot was one Henry Coxwell, not a pretty widow. Of course, two men in a basket wouldn't have had such cross-gender appeal.Id enjoy seeing this. The storyline seems to have my interest.
