The only time I was in Tokyo, a couple years ago, I saw almost no homeless people- and the one time I definitely did, the cops were ALL over that person so fast, it was alarming. It seemed like one of their jobs was to yank unsightly street people out of public view before anyone noticed them. [ citation needed] Plot [ edit] One Christmas Eve, three homeless people ? a middle-aged alcoholic named Gin, a former drag queen named Hana, and a dependent runaway girl named Miyuki ? discover an abandoned newborn while searching through the garbage. Deposited with the unnamed baby is a note asking the finder to take good care of her and a bag containing clues to the parents' identity. The trio sets out to find the baby's parents. The baby is named Kiyoko ( À¶»Ò), based on the Japanese translation of Silent Night literally meaning "pure child", as she is found on Christmas Eve. Outside a cemetery, the group encounters a high-ranking yakuza trapped under his car. The man happens to know the owner of the club where Kiyoko's mother used to work; his daughter is to marry the club owner that day. At the wedding, the groom tells them that the baby's mother is a former bar girl named Sachiko. He gives them Sachiko's address, but the party is interrupted when a maid, revealed to be a Latin American hitman in disguise, attempts to shoot the bride's father. The hitman kidnaps Miyuki and the baby and takes them back to his home. There, Miyuki befriends the hitman's wife and shows her some pictures of her family. Hana searches for Miyuki and Kiyoko while Gin takes care of an old homeless man who is dying in the street. After giving Gin a little red bag, the old man peacefully passes away. Some teenagers show up and beat up Gin and the dead old man. Meanwhile, Hana finds the girls and they go off to find a place to stay. They go to Hana's former club. Gin, who was rescued by another member of the club, is also there. The trio sets out to find Sachiko's house, but they discover that it has been torn down. They are informed of the unhappy relationship between Sachiko and her husband, who is a gambling alcoholic. The group rests at a store until they are told to leave by the clerk. Hana collapses, and is taken by Gin and Miyuki to the hospital. Once at the hospital, Gin finds his daughter, who is also named Kiyoko, working as a nurse. Hana berates Gin in front of his daughter and storms out of the hospital, with Miyuki following behind with baby Kiyoko in hand. Hana and Miyuki find Sachiko about to jump off a bridge. Sachiko insists that her husband got rid of the baby without her knowledge, and that they return the baby to her. Meanwhile, Gin finds Sachiko's husband, who confirms a TV report Gin saw earlier that Kiyoko was actually stolen by Sachiko from the hospital. They chase after Sachiko and the baby. After an intense car chase, Miyuki chases Sachiko to the top of a building. Sachiko reveals she became pregnant in hopes it would bring her closer to her husband. When her baby was stillborn, she decided to kidnap Kiyoko from the hospital, thinking, in her grief, the baby was hers. As Sachiko is about to jump off the building, her husband comes out of his apartment, located just across the street, and begs her to start over with him. Sachiko jumps off nevertheless, but Miyuki manages to catch her before she falls, but then Sachiko accidentally drops Kiyoko. Hana jumps off the building after Kiyoko, catches the baby, and lands safely due to a miraculous gust of wind. Hana, Miyuki, and Gin are taken to the hospital. Miyuki hands Gin his cigarettes and drops the old man's small red bag on the floor, revealing a winning lottery ticket. Kiyoko's real parents want to ask the trio to become her godparents. When a police inspector introduces them to the trio, the inspector is revealed to be Miyuki's father. Movie critic George Peluranee notes that "Tokyo Godfathers is a film that shows the small yet significant ties that each of us have with supposed strangers, and tells well the story of miracles, family, love, and forgiveness. " [ citation needed] Susan Napier points out that Tokyo Godfathers is part of a trend in anime and manga as depicting families in an increasingly dark fashion, showcasing the problems with traditional families, and attempts by people to construct a "pseudo-family" out of an increasingly fragmented and isolating modern Japanese society. [7] It is put forth that despite the seeming criticisms of traditional families throughout the film, it ends with a more conservative feeling as everyone returns to their traditional/original families. Despite its seemingly traditional ending, the film offers a more radical version of family. Throughout the story these three homeless vagabonds unknowingly form a "pseudo-family" to protect themselves from the outside world and to overcome their personal demons. [7] Release [ edit] This movie was released in North America by Sony Pictures on December 29, 2003 in an unsuccessful attempt to get an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. [8] The movie was released on sub-only DVD on April 13, 2004, [9] and they've planned to use DTS for the DVD, but was ultimately scrapped. [10] Announced on December 19, 2019, international animation licensor, GKIDS, will release the movie on March 9, 2020 with a brand new 4K restoration and a new English dub. [11] Reception [ edit] The review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes reported that 90% of critics have given the film a positive review based on 68 reviews, with an average rating of 7. 07/10. The critics consensus states, "Beautiful and substantive, Tokyo Godfathers adds a moving ? and somewhat unconventional ? entry to the animated Christmas canon. " [12] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 73 out of 100 based on 25 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [13] Notes [ edit] ^ a b c In the Animax Asia release of the film, Gin is voiced by Darren Pleavin, Hana by Russel Wait, and Miyuki by Candice Moore. TREVOR PHILLIPS Nothing could be more relevant than race in the fight against knife crime and failing to point this out imperils yet more children of colour Comment 19 Aug 2018, 1:26 Updated: 19 Aug 2018, 1:33 THE skies are darkening over our island for boys like the teenager who was disembowelled in this week¡Çs knife attack in Camberwell, South London. This attack is the latest in a senseless war between gangs ? almost all comprised of black or Asian youngsters. 7 The toll of knife attack victims rose this week with the multiple stabbings in Camberwell, South London Credit: SWNS:South West News Service If the toll had included white teens, I suspect there would be a national outcry. It is time to recognise that what started as a grim fight for territory between hardened criminals is turning into a massacre of the innocents. This year three of the killings have taken place within ten minutes of my doorstep. My own affluent North London street is surrounded by estates populated in part by the ethnic groups whose names feature in virtually every report of the violence: Somalis, Ethiopians, North and Central Africans, Afghans. 7 What started as gang turf warfare in London is turning into a massacre of the innocents Credit: SWNS:South West News Service Harrowing footage shows cops battling to save teens 'disembowelled with a machete' in 30-strong gang fight 'over a belt' The media scrupulously avoids mentioning ethnicity. I understand the fear of stigmatising these groups, but nothing could be more relevant. Race is part of the picture, and failing to point this out impedes the fight against these crimes ? and imperils yet more children of colour. Met Police boss Cressida Dick made one of the few intelligent contributions by pointing out that much of the apparently random violence isn¡Çt random at all: It¡Çs the consequence of the war to supply middle-class parties with drugs. But even if we could reduce the demand, it will take time, and these children don¡Çt have time. They are in mortal danger now. 7 The media scrupulously avoids mentioning ethnicity - but nothing could be more relevant Credit: SWNS:South West News Service Moment scooter rider dumps dying companion in the street before driving off after stabbing in Camberwell, South London Depressingly, I would hardly change a word of my advice to Gordon Brown when he reached out to me after a spate of killings 12 years back. A disproportionate number of the killers and their victims come from single-parent households, with mothers holding down multiple jobs. These women need help, whether in the form of another responsible adult in the home, or just straight cash that would free them to spend more time with their sons. Pupil Referral Units, all too often prep schools for gang violence, should either be properly funded or disbanded. 7 Even if we could reduce the demand for drugs, it will take time, and these children don¡Çt have time Credit: SWNS:South West News Service 7 The Sun on Sunday has put together a team of experts to come up with solutions as part of our Beat The Blades campaign I support the ambitious idea that we should make it possible for boys who want to get out of the gang life to board at schools away from home ? they don¡Çt all have to be posh. When I showed signs of ¡Ègoing wrong¡É my parents dispatched me to the other side of the Atlantic, to a school in Guyana, where the expression ¡Èrod of iron¡É has an all too concrete meaning. And we need a new deal with police. I don¡Çt entirely buy claims their hands are tied by political correctness. Nonetheless, we should stop obsessing about disproportionality in the use of stop and search, even perhaps removing legal inhibitions to focusing on particular high-crime areas. 7 A disproportionate number of killers and victims come from single-mother households Credit: Chris Eades - The Sun Murdered rapper Incognito performs with bandmates Moscow17 in a Tim Westwood Crib Session Comment DAN WOOTTON Let¡Çs get angrier at China's cruel wet markets that caused coronavirus ALLY ROSS If you think I spent week watching for Enders bloopers you ain't had coronavirus Comment TREVOR KAVANAGH Hysteria forced the UK into lockdown and will kill more than coronavirus Comment THE SUN SAYS Britain's mass testing for coronavirus is shambolic ? our NHS needs more help Comment DAN WOOTTON Yet again, Harry and Meghan's priority is their new Hollywood lifestyle Comment JEREMY CLARKSON I have the answer to going out and staying safe... it¡Çs called a motor car 7 Tanesha Melbourne lost her life to knife crime Credit: PA:Press Association But in turn, the police must accept the roll-out of body-worn cameras. This is a fantastic video. I remember watching this live, at Java Jazz's outdoor stage. first time I saw a mosh pit at a jazz festival. Tokyo Godfathers, a 2003 Japanese anime from well known director Satoshi Kon (Paprika, Millennium Actress) is about an unlikely trio of homeless people that finds a baby abandoned on Christmas eve. Although the obvious inspiration for this story is John Ford's similarly titled 1948 Western Three Godfathers, the coincidence filled novels of Charles Dickens are an even greater influence. Like Dickens, Kon is interested in the lives of the poverty stricken. Also, Kon's film is just as full of incredulity straining coincidences and plot twists as well known Dickens novels such as Great Expectations. There are also some similarities to Dickens' Christmas Carol including numerous flashbacks and a character encountering what seems to be a future version of himself who offers him a second chance.
Satoshi Kon's film is more than just a pastiche of his influences, however, he brings his own unique sensibilities to the table. For one thing, neither Dickens nor Ford would have dreamed of focusing a story on a transvestite who desperately wants to be a mother. The animation is always well done and it manages to draw just as much focus as the frenetically outlandish plot twists and turns. These narrative elements include chance encounters with figures from each of the three godfathers' pasts, an encounter with a yakuza boss and his would be assassin who only speaks Spanish, and a visit to a gender bending night club. Tokyo Godfathers does an excellent job of presenting its characters realistically and it even manages to be fair about some of their less savory actions. The film also comes close to working on an emotional level: there are some genuinely heart-warming moments but they are presented so quickly that their impact is lessened. Ultimately, this film has a few too many unlikely plot contrivances that go by a little too fast for it to be a great one but it works well enough often enough to make the film better than average.
