This is a book about a very sick and unfortunate French woman with a passionate Latin temperament who is not a natural with children. Although she clearly dotes upon her daughter, she sometimes gets it very wrong, and as a result their relationship breaks down. The daughter is spoilt and therefore feels very entitled and has a tendency to make everything about her. This is very much a portrait of a mother through the eyes of an angry child who would seem to want to see the worst in her. It is true that the mother does some bad things, but I have forgiven much worse from members of my own family and will continue to do so and to try to see things from the point of view of other people, something the author of this book (assisted by a journalist) would seem to find it very hard to do. But after a conversation with my colleague who assured me that the story would become easier to read as Olivia becomes an adolescent and begins to break away. And it did become easier to read though no less harrowing. The sheer strength of this girl, despite what she lived through is astonishing and a true testament to human endurance and survival and I can honestly say that this book will stay with me for a very long time the way very few books do. So, even if you're not into biographies and nonfiction, give this story a go. Just don't read it before bed. I'd read the traits and had a good sense of what sociopaths are like from the book 'The Sociopath Next Door'. But 'control', for example, it was hard for me to know if my mom ticked that box without reading about control in the context of someone else with a psychopathic mom. I mean all parents have control of their kids, right? Plus, the courts took me away from my Mom & stepdad when I was 10 (thankfully). He went to prison for child abuse and she fled the state before she could be arrested. Therefore, there are other things I really don't my Mom lie a lot... I have no idea. The lay out of the book was really helpful because each chapter goes into detail about a specific psychopathic/sociopathic trait. She gives just a paragraph of info on the psychopathy symptom and then the chapter details how the trait played out in her mom. After reading about how her mom controlled her, I could see that my mom also exhibited that need to control. Aside from being informative/educational, it was also a page turner and emotionally gripping. For example, she had details on how she'd be put into situations where she would be inevitably punished regardless of what she did. It put my tum tum in knots and brought back memories of the same. This is a tough movie to watch, but boy does it ever keep your attention. The level of dysfunction in this mother/son relationship is so disturbing, as is the premise of the whole movie, that the mom fears her teenage might shoot up a school. It's a topical issue in America with all of the school shootings. The acting is superb and the attention to detail impressive. (one small example: their last name is Bell, like The Mental Health Bell. Very well done and worth watching, but be prepared for it to invade your dream space as it takes time to process the horror of this story.
