It is with a heavy heart that I have come to post this in my own community. If you just want to learn how to reduce your risk of catching COVID-19, scroll down to the "Risk Reduction" section. However, to appreciate the full scope of the challenge ahead, you are encouraged to carefully read this entire document. The aim of this document is simple: it's best to walk into something knowing what you're about to face. It also aims to reduce anxiety, panic and misinformation by arming you with key sourced information, all without downplaying the risks of COVID-19. The document has gone through hundreds of iterations thanks to global community feedback, including from places such as Seattle, Australia, Canada, and the LA area. Although all facts are meticulously sourced from experts in their fields, you are responsible for your own health and your own research. Further, contextualization of information remains an ongoing challenge, as does keeping up with a fluid situation. Final word will always belong to the health authorities, as well as the mods of this subreddit. Now brace yourself, because this is going to suck a little bit. CONTEXT: A recent in-depth study has shown just how incredibly infectious COVID-19 is. Unfortunately, its spread has not slowed, and the virus has only been halted in China through Herculean efforts. In other words, and as the Director of the WHO himself has said, this is not a drill. The bad news: There are currently over 135, 000 global confirmed cases of COVID-19, and the WHO recently classified it as a pandemic. Now it seems that it has arrived upon your doorstep, which means there is likely silent human-to-human transmission in the community. The good news: knowledge is a weapon that defeats these things. It worked in 1918 against the Spanish Flu, when we essentially stopped the medieval practice of blood-letting (you know when they drained you of blood because they thought that would cure whatever ailed you? Or leeching? ). And it worked against many other outbreaks since: Smallpox, MERS, SARS, Ebola, etc. The WHO's tackling of Smallpox alone was nothing short of scientific heroism. And so, a hundred years after 1918, here we are again, facing perhaps the greatest test of our generation. The problem is that these days we're inundated with so much information that, when a real threat comes along, it's buried under a mountain of clutter. And although this document is not all-encompasing by any means, hopefully it will help you see through some of that clutter, as well as give those new to the threat an opportunity to hit the ground running. So go ahead and meet your foe. Do not underestimate it. Now prepare to go to war. IMPORTANT: The main mode of transmission is via respiratory droplets: coughing, sneezing, and breathing. But you can also get it through shaking hands, kissing somebody who is sick, or touching a contaminated surface (droplet dispersion; think of a cough plume settling). This can include handrails, doorknobs, elevator buttons, and surfaces prone to a droplet dispersion cloud. "Cough dispersion" basically means anytime a sick person coughs, they're dispering a plume of droplets over a given area. The viral particles within those droplets then settle on ordinary surfaces. People touch those surfaces then touch their phones or their faces, which in turn lead to contact with their eyes, mouth, or nose, inducing infection. Therefore it is best to keep a 6 ft "coughing distance" from people, and treat everything you touch in public as if it's been contaminated (see the "Risk Reduction" section below). Here's an excellent short video on the topic. Read a little more on the subject here. [AWAITING PEER REVIEW, BUT IS GAINING ACCEPTANCE IN THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY] There now appears to be evidence the virus can spread through breathing as well. Michael Osterholm, PhD, MPH, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota: "The findings [of the study] confirm that COVID-19 is spread simply through breathing, even without coughing. Don't forget about hand washing, but at the same time we've got to get people to understand that if you don't want to get infected, you can't be in crowds. Social distancing is the most effective tool we have right now. " Source. (Crucial to understand: the research specifies patients who are symptomatic, and makes no claims about asymptomatic transfer. Also please note that this study has not been peer-reviewed, but due to the implications is included here out of an abundance of caution. ) UPDATE: Dr. Osterholm just went on the Joe Rogan show to explain the situation. Although the show itself has been known to be controversial, the Doctor's credentials speak for themselves. [AWAITING PEER REVIEW] A new study indicates COVID-19 can survive in the air up to 3 hours, and on surfaces up to several days. This has been noted here out of an abundance of caution. ( Article | Study) Up to 1 in 5 infected people may require hospitalization source 1, source 2. But this is an oversimplification as the metric skews toward the elderly and those with comorbidities (see the Mortality/Comorbidities section below). Plus the metrics differ based on region and testing capacity. Here's a breakdown of the above: Approximately 80% of laboratory confirmed patients have had mild to moderate disease, which includes non-pneumonia and pneumonia cases. 13. 8% have had severe disease requiring hospitalization, and 6. 1% were critical, requiring the ICU (respiratory failure, septic shock, and/or multiple organ dysfunction/failure). (These numbers are as of Feb 20, 2020, based on 55, 924 laboratory confirmed cases in China, from the WHO report. ) Update: European Society of Intensive Care Medicine is reporting a 10% ICU rate, and has issued a word of warning. Due to the highly infectious nature of COVID-19, the danger is not just the mortality rate for the vulnerable, but the possibility of overwhelming the health infrastructure, which in turn causes unnecessary fatalities. As it stands, it wouldn't take much to overwhelm hospitals, hence why it's important to start taking preventative measures now (outlined in the Risk Reduction section below)--especially because hospitals are already burdened with a heavy flu season (in the Northern hemisphere, that is). For example, if only 10 out of every 1000 people required a bed, we'd already be coming up short, as in the USA there are only 2. 77 beds for every 1000 people, and 2. 58 in Canada. Why is this important? In South Korea, 4 in 22 deaths happened while waiting to be hospitalized ( source in Korean, as well as a discussion about it), and that's from South Korea, who is #2 in the world bedcount-wise with 12. 27 beds per 1000 people. And of course many beds will already be occupied for regular patients. Toronto Star soberly warns hospitals can’t cope if coronavirus outbreak worsens in Canada: March 6th. A surgeon working in the heart of Italy's outbreak gives a harrowing testimony and urges everyone to heed the warning that it can easily overwhelm hospitals ( translation / Original). This is a "novel" virus, which means the immune system has never been exposed to it and therefore everyone is susceptible. There is no vaccine, nor do authorities expect one for some time. People are thought to be most contagious when they are most symptomatic (the sickest). (Source: CDC) Update: "Coronavirus: Why You Must Act Now | Politicians, Community Leaders and Business Leaders: What Should You Do and When? " ( link) Update: Excellent quick read on how normalcy lulls and how quickly this thing can hit, by The Washington Post: "When a danger is growing exponentially, everything looks fine until it doesn’t" ( link | archive link) Update: CNN: "Take this seriously. Coronavirus is about to change your life for a while" ( link) Update: WHO director: "We are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the alarming levels of inaction. " ( link) Update: "Any country that looks at the experience of other countries with large epidemics and thinks that it won’t happen to us is making a deadly mistake, " warned the WHO. PSYCHOLOGY: Do not panic, but give yourself permission to feel fear. Fear gets you prepared. As for panic, all one has to do is look at the crowded halls of Wuhan hospitals during the early phases of the outbreak to understand how panic worsens problems. A jolt of fear is all right, as it gets you moving in the right direction. After that point, however, you must turn to thinking clearly, level-headedly, and listen to your local health authorities. As for what you can do, follow the steps in the "Risk Reduction" section below. Upon first learning about the extent of the threat, you may become anxious and hyper aware and start taking extra pecautions. This is normal, what psychologists call an "adjustment reaction. " Here is a very short guide on how to cope. Normalcy bias plays a factor. So does denial. You may hear things like "it's just a flu, nothing to worry about. " Facing the threat will help you prepare for it while denial puts you and your loved ones at risk. People in denial may take foolish risks like attend crowded events during an active outbreak, or fail to take precautionary measures, thereby accidentally passing the virus on to others. Denial also slows community response. Here is an excellent Harvard piece on reactions and overreactions, denial versus panic, and the five principle bulwarks against denial. It is short and absolutely worth your time. For officials, crisis management teaches us that it is important not to downplay a threat, otherwise you may lose the public's trust. Do not fear inducing a panic (see the aforementioned paper). The public needs you to be cl

CO2 is essential for all life on Earth especially plants. CO2 levels are at a low level and have never caused warming to occur. Windows on the World, despite the fact that it takes place in the weeks following the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York, is a film that is urgently for our time. It is a hero's journey of a son trying to find his father in that grief-stricken landscape and the characters stand in for the millions of immigrants, legal and illegal, who contribute in their everyday lives, to the American landscape. The film seeks to counter the narrative that's all-too-prevalent in today's political and media landscape by telling a story set in America's biggest and most diverse city, at its darkest time. The script by playwright and novelist Robert Mailer Anderson (who also produced the film) is wise and completely engaging; he creates indelible characters who are ultimately inspiring and uplifting. Edward James Olmos gives what he considers to be the performance of a lifetime, and the rest of the cast is terrific as well-with a special shout-out to Glynn Turman. The direction, by Olmos's son Michael, is sure-handed, getting terrific performances from his cast, including his father, in this father-son story, and it's beautifully lensed. The music, including jazz and a title track written by Anderson, is pitch-perfect, supporting the story without getting in the way. This film should be seen by everybody-and I'm sure it will be in mainstream distribution soon, as this is a time when, although the major studios may have turned their backs on substance, terrific indie films like this one have many other possible venues. If you can't see it at a film festival, like I did, keep a keen eye out for it. Terrific and inspiring.

[ first] [ prev] [ First Appearance] [ Last Appearance] [ next] The storm thundered across the city, lighting flashing and booming, rain driving hard against the crysteel windows, the wind howling through the streets, the clouds low and dark. Nakteti stood on the balcony of the suite she had been allocated, the safety-fields dialed down enough to let some wind and rain through. She wasn't at risk of being thrown from the balcony by the wind or being drowned by the rain but she could still feel the savagery of the storm somewhat. She knew that most beings would take shelter, hide from such furious nature, but she wanted to experience, as much as she could, what humans had put up with from their earliest days. She wanted, no, she needed to understand the humans. In the same way her people had learned about the Lanaktallans and their Unified Civilized Species Councils, she wanted to learn about the humans. Both were the dominant species in their sector of the galactic arm spur but they both approached everything from such different angles. A Lanaktallan's first impulse was to preserve resources for future generations, to make sure that everyone got their fair share of the resources of a newly discovered planet. A humans first instinct was to alter their environment or themselves to survive. She had watched the Tri-Vid, found out she could look up educational or entertainment programs and order them to either rent for a brief period of time or 'buy' the ability to watch it when she wanted for the rest of her life. The more she watched, the more she understood. Human infants, from the moment they were born, looked for their mother, could grasp tightly to things, and were capable of vocalizing distress or need. They were highly physical and their mental faculties started developing quickly. Human children progressed so rapidly Nakteti had double-checked several times. Over and over she saw proof that humans were capable of multiple actions at once. The most incredible she saw was a video of small children patting their own heads while rubbing their stomachs and singing a song. Some of the children got so excited they jumped up and down while performing the actions. That had made her stare. She tried repeating it, a little game that small human children played, and could not manage to do any two of the three. Their societies could be just as confusing. She was shocked to find out that, for the most part, the Terran Confederacy did not care how a planet or alliance was run. The Confederacy was more a mutual defense/trade agreement/technology sharing compact than an actual government. Individual planets and small groups of 'system states' were left alone. The Terran Confederacy did not even get involved with rebellions against a planetary government the majority of the time, considering it an internal matter. Then there was space exploration. Losing their friends had made a deep, lasting impact. The universe was not a source of resources for the good of all, like to the Lanaktallans, to humans the universe was a cold, malevolent entity that would take away everything and leave you dying and alone, gasping for air it held just beyond reach. The Lanaktallans looked at every technological breakthrough or scientific research discovery on how it would benefit or put in harm's way every single member of their society. Humans looked at each of them as 'how will this protect/benefit/assist us' and then adapted it to do just that. Eventually, it had led her to looking up a government office. Which led her to speaking to a full crafted AI, who had recognized her because it had bought a VR version of her stuffy for its two 'child-hashes' to play with. With the AI's help, Weaver-3381, she had looked at a vast catalogue of potential purchases, adding requirements, each time worried that it would prohibit her from finding what she wanted. After nearly an hour of searching, she had found, with Weaver-3381's help, exactly what she had been looking for. A planet. The survey crew had gone through the system, ran probes, done cartography, and jumped out. It had been registered, and, to Nakteti's shock, put up for sale. Weaver-3381 had helped her fill out the paperwork she needed as a 'refugee of a species in danger', helped her register her corporation with the Terran Confederacy, had helped her fill out her paperwork as the 'recipient of a Precursor Extinction Assault', and then helped her select all kinds of colony options. She had contacted the Sweet's computer and downloaded the technical specifications and blueprints of the Boom or Bust and added that to the paperwork. She had com-linked her crew members and shown them everything, and despite their disbelief they were still hopeful, and made changes based on their suggestions and desires. Weaver-3381 had assisted the whole way, getting excited over the habitation sections and expansions. Then she had checked her account, holding her breath. She'd had the money. She couldn't believe it. A simple set of stuffys, scale model ships, including the Boom or Bust (with or without detachable colony section action) and tiny little model figurines of her crew and people, and she could barely watch her credit balance without hyperventilating. Nakteti had enough money to buy a star system, an updated Boom or Bust with Terran civilian technology, contract vessels to help move any of her people willing to come to the new colony, and have enough left over to pay for the repairs to the It Tastes Sweet as well as her crew's medical needs. She had finished everything and moved out to the balcony to watch the storm. The wind and rain felt like a representation of how she felt when she got caught up in the Terran Confederacy. There was so much energy around her. Even now, late at night, she could look down and, with the terrace's auto-focus feature in the protective fields, see people moving through the streets, shopping in stores, talking with one another in dining establishments. Even with their extensive lifespans humans were as active as someone who had only a few days to live and wanted to experience as much as possible. It taught us that the universe would take everything from us if it could, she heard Major Carnight's voice again as she stood in the wind and rain with her eyes closed. The storm, strangely enough, was easing her distress rather than increasing it. The feel of the wind ruffling her wet fur, the feel of the thunder rumbling through her, the cold wet rain, all combined to make her feel, well, grounded. She was holding onto the railing with all four hands, reaching forward with first one foot then the other, switching back and forth, and holding onto the metal rods that made up the balcony safety fence. The safety railing felt solid, she'd found out it something called duralloy, nearly unbreakable and used in most human construction. The solid feeling made it so that holding onto it made her feel anchored to the world. Safe and secure in a strange way. Nakteti thought about the Tri-Vid programs she'd watched, about colony disasters in Terran history. They had suffered Precursor attacks that had wiped out entire colonies, they responded by allowing colony forces to have naval forces and planetary defense forces strong enough to, at the very least, hold off a Precursor till nearby systems could rally around the attacked. It wasn't mandatory, you could take the risk if you wanted to. Nakteti knew that the Lanaktallans would have made it mandatory and just charged the species for the Unified Military Forces presence. That was the big difference between the Lanaktallans and the humans. You didn't have to have anything. She could have started the colony by just having her and her crew dropped off on the planet with a smile and a pair of modesty shorts each, not even a single nano-forge. The Lanaktallan had lists and lists of what was required, all expensive, all charged to the entire species. The differences were simple, but startling in their effects. She had grown to maturity in a system that removed choice and personal responsibility to replace it with the various Councils. Terrans basically went: "Don't cry to me if you didn't take my advice and got eaten. " The thunder boomed from a lightning strike less than a mile away, pulling her thoughts away from the gloomy track of how the Lanaktallans removed any chance of success by claiming to have your best interests at heart. Pulled her from wondering how different things would be for her people if it had been the Terrans who found them first. She sighed, staring at the night sky. She was from further 'up' that galactic spur, her night sky had more stars in it, but for some reason the sky looked breath-taking to her. Her datalink pinged and she checked it. It was Major Carnight, letting her know that he was standing slightly behind her. "I am just watching the storm, " Nakteti said. "I just came to check on you, " he answered. "You've had quite a few shocks today. " Nakteti snorted a laugh. "That's one way to put it. " "Anything you'd like a non-educational video answer to? " He asked. Nakteti tilted her face up to the rain as it blew across her on a gust of wind. When it passed she looked back down at the city. "Too much. You Terrans are confusing. " "Eh, we're pretty simple. " That made Nakteti laugh. "Simple. A people who in less than fifty-thousand years went from crude dwellings and caves to having over a dozen methods of faster than light travel and autonomous colony creation systems and have settled over twelve-thousand planets in less than eight thousand years. Yes, so very simple. " There was silence for a moment, broken only by the rumble of thunder. "It is what it is, " Major Carnight said, heaving his shoulders, which Nakteti's implant informed her, for the hundredth time, was a shrug. Nakteti shook her head. "I bought a solar system. Me. A ship Captain who lost her colony and had her ship blown to pieces on her, was able to bu

If you ever played a Unity game, chances are that it felt jerky, especially when panning the camera, regardless of the frame rate. In the case of Ori and the Will of the Wisps, even though it's possible to run the game at a locked 60fps (with low GPU and CPU utilization), it becomes a stuttery mess whenever there's player movement - which is pretty much all of the time. Here's a long and detailed post by Scott Sewell, developer at KinematicSoup, explaining why that happens, and how to achieve smooth motion in Unity. That post was written almost four years ago. Still, to this day, 99% of titles that run on Unity suffer from the same problem. Ori 2 is no exception. And a studio financially backed by one of the largest companies in the world has absolutely no excuse to release a game in this state. Phil Spencer lying about "fully supporting" Win32 games in the Microsoft Store was already bad enough (all titles downloaded from their launcher behave the same as any UWP app - that is, they offer no exclusive full screen mode, have a restricted file structure, with locked folders and executables, etc. ). No smooth motion on Unity, in 2020, is simply unacceptable. Here's hoping that the devs at Moon Studios see this and implement the fix, in order to make their fantastic looking game actually playable. Edit: For those demanding "proof" of my claims (even though it's a widespread and ancient issue afflicting dozens, if not hundreds, of Unity engine games), I uploaded a video showing the game running on my PC, and also this screenshot, to cement that my machine isn't the bottleneck. Video here (game running in 4K and 63fps, captured at 1080p and 60fps). New: YouTube link (Streamable is supposed to play at 1080p and 60fps "on compatible devices", but I still wanted to make sure that the judder is visible, without attributing hitches to the video). I use RTSS to display the overlay with some stats, including frame rate and frame times. Notice how the frame rate stays locked at 63fps (I deliberately capped it at 3fps below my display's maximum refresh rate in 4K, following the recommendations of the experts at Blur Busters and Battle(non)sense), and frame times are mostly constant (flat line), showing no frame pacing issues. GPU utilization rarely goes above 40%, and CPU utilization remains in the 10% range. The game world is comprised of a series of bespoke layers, all parallax with one another, to create the illusion of a 3D environment. Even if Ori's movements are fluid, pay close attention to the foreground and background layers when going from side to side, with the camera following the player character. Notice how the motion isn't smooth, almost as if there were frame time spikes during camera movement. When I walk slowly, the judder is reduced, and when I don't move at all, everything's buttery smooth, denoting that the issue really is tied to motion. This micro-stuttering is common to the vast majority of Unity engine titles when there is object and/or camera motion, as demonstrated in the article linked above and the Unity3D subreddit post that I mentioned in one of my comments. Some people may not notice it, but that doesn't mean that the issue isn't present in a large number of games. System specs: Windows 10 Pro (1909) Aorus 2080 Ti Xtreme Waterforce 11G Nvidia 442. 50 drivers (there is no Game Ready driver for Ori) AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 32GB RAM DDR4-3200 (CL14) Samsung NVMe SSD 960 Pro 512GB (system drive) Samsung NVMe SSD 970 Evo 1TB (game installation drive) Aorus X570 Master motherboard Display: LG OLED 65" C9 (4K@66Hz; 1440p@120Hz) Edit 2: Some more info. I am playing the Microsoft Store version of the game, which inherently doesn't support exclusive full screen mode, and is installed to a locked folder (WindowsApps) with an executable that can't be modified. As I also mentioned in one of my comments, a possible workaround for some Unity games is capping the frame rate at multiples of 50, since physics, in Unity, run at 50fps. However, I tried that with Ori (both in 4K@50Hz and 1440p@100Hz) and it didn't alleviate the stutters. As for running the game in exclusive full screen mode, currently, it's only possible with the Steam version, via a registry edit or launch parameter, and that doesn't seem to solve the issue either. Good news, though, as the devs have announced earlier today a series of upcoming fixes, which include exclusive full screen mode! Here's the full list of PC upcoming fixes: PC Upcoming Fixes Sound glitches/buzzing Weapon Wheel (both RT/LT bringing up abilities) Chinese font rendering issue End-game Achievements Unlock Error Leaderboard Missing Information Key Remapping Error More options for performance tweaking on the PC: Resolution scaling% Allowing to super-sample or under-sample the game Exclusive full screen mode and other small tweakable graphic options Plans to improve the HDR experience with HDR support for PC is coming soon Still, exclusive full screen mode isn't enough to fully fix the issue. Regardless, I may have found a solution, which absolutely confirms that the stuttering is, in fact, related to the age-old Unity issue, contrary to what some people on this thread may lead you to believe. I'll update the OP again as soon as I'm able to test it and make sure that it works.
