It's just a bunch of mediocre re-enactments of horrifying events from history. None of the context or trivia... it's quite simply not Lore anymore. This is, quite honestly, the biggest disappointment of the month for me. I was a huge fan of the first season, and it got me to look up the podcast, which got me even more excited to see another season of what had become one of my favorite new shows. Who thought this was a good idea? I honestly would have rather had the series cancelled outright and just call this something else, because it's just that different from what people liked about Lore. I honestly hope that whoever made this decision gets fired... such a sad waste of a promising new property... Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2018 Format: Prime Video I was thrilled last year when Amazon brought my favorite podcast "Lore" to television. The first season of Lore was fantastic! I loved it! My only gripe with Season1 was it wasn't long enough (I wanted more episodes). What made Season 1 of Lore so great was the haunting narration of Lore's creator Aaron Mahnke, the beautifully disturbing animation, and the spot on re-enactments. Season 1 captured the true essence of Lore's magic, great storytelling. Season 2 of Lore is such a disappointment. Amazon missed the bullseye by eliminating Mr. Mahnke's spooky voiceover and the mesmerizing visual arts. Season 2 of Lore failed to transported me to a believable time and place in history. I was instead given vignettes of Masterpiece Theater type stories with splashes of gore. The theatrical stories did not make me want to peruse Kindle for books on history and folklore, but instead, made me want to switch to a different streaming channel. I also felt too much creative license was used to make the historical tales more music in a story about 1867 Irish Grave Robbers in! I know Mr. Mahnke's Twitter feed said he worked with the writers in creating Season 2 and Amazon wanted to take Lore in a more theatrical direction which is very unfortunate. Amazon if you're reading or listening "Let me be clear there is no LORE without Mr. Mahnke's memorable storytelling"! I’ve never heard a podcast that wasn’t on the car when my husband is driving and I’m dozing beside him. I’m not a fan, but I love to read and I love the paranormal! Folklore is a true love of mine so when he said they were making a tv version of his favorite podcast I was excited. Season 1 was fantastic! The story telling was great and I learned a lot. Really enjoyable. Season 2 is trash. For real. It’s cinema style gore with not a hint of narrative or history until 30 seconds at the end, from what I hear. Took my husband’s word for it because I stopped watching three quarters of the way through episode one when they started sawing someone’s head off. Unreal! And there are people here saying “oh great for Halloween” great if you like “scary movies. ” This was supposed to be history not Saw 12. Wow what a letdown. Going back to Netflix to watch Haunting of Hill House which is fiction and doesn’t try to masquerade as something else. They had such a great opportunity here and really blew it. Mixing in rave reviews from Season 1 doesn’t fool anyone either. That made me as mad as S2E1 was terrible. There is no narration or background information for each episode and honestly, the episodes are kind if boring. They are a lot more gory, but it’s doesnt make the episodes any more interesting or scary. I was watching the Hinterkaifak episode and kept thinking “here we go, going to see the same person attacked with a pickaxe again”. I thought the first season was great and binged the season and even rewatched episodes. For this one, I don’t even feel compelled to finish. All the wonderful spine tingling storytelling that made me fall in love with this podcast is now schlock fodder for horror fetish fanboys. In Season 1, the narration would not only provide an introduction, but also reveal deeper history or cultural tie-ins to provide greater context. Season 2 seems far more focused on telling each episode as a self-contained story with the history and research taking a distant backseat. From the reviews, Season 2 breaks down like this: If you've never heard of the Lore podcast, didn't watch Season 1, or you're wholly unfamiliar with these stories, you will love Season 2 of Lore. Even lacking the narration and history, these stories are still fascinating and retelling them for modern audiences has definite value. But if you're a fan of Aaron Mahnke's narration and research from Season 1 or you're just a fan of the Lore podcast format, Season 2 will be incredibly lacking. Its not to say its bad show, but a poor reformatting of something that stood out as truly unique in the "history of the weird" genre. I, like most people who liked season one, was excited there was a second season. I Couldn't even pay attention to this season. I skipped on to episode two, still nothing good. I only hope there will be a 3rd season and they go back to the original with Aaron Mahnke. I know the stories, I'm just interested in a nice visual and to hear them told with the amazing narration of season 1. I found if you search YouTube for Burke and Hare animated Simple History has a good video and narrative and Adele K Thomas did a great rendition of the Bathory story. Just search each name and look for animation and skip season 2.
