Personally I had a great time watching this movie and sure it was packed with a lot but it had to in order to wrap up the trilogy after TLJ. The things that it doesn't explain are things I wish were explained, but for me it felt almost like the way they set it up was so that people might theorize and interpret it however they want to. Viel kommt zusammen: große Erwartungen, falsche Entscheidungen, kindische Grabenkämpfe und eine übersättigende Veröffentlichungspolitik, alles kulminierend in The Rise of Skywalker. J. J. Abrams mag vielleicht kein sonderlich guter Regisseur sein, ein schlechterer Drehbuchautor und vor allem Geschichtenerzähler ist er in jedem Fall und Episode IX ist der endgültige Beweis dafür. Ich habe schon wirklich sehr, sehr lange kein derart faules Drehbuch erleben müssen, bei dem man sich als Zuschauer buchstäblich für dumm verkauft fühlt. Vollkommen überladen und viel zu schnell hetzt die dünne Narrative unübersichtlich von Plotpoint zu Plotpoint wie eine einzige gigantische Schnitzeljagd und das flache Storytelling besteht aus kaum mehr als Unmengen an fadenscheiniger Exposition. Bereits der Auftakt wischt allerhand beiseite, damit Abrams sein Setup wiederherstellen kann und Entscheidungen von Episode VIII egalisiert werden können. Mit Hammer und Meißel statt Skalpell, wohlgemerkt. Deus Ex Machina ? Der Film. Die billigen Kniffe und das haarsträubend zurecht gebogene Drehbuch bedürfen augenscheinlich nicht einmal lausig hingerotzten Nebensätzen als Erklärung, nichts wird erläutert, noch so krude Wendungen werden kommentarlos stehen gehenlassen. So einiges hätte ich ja noch durchgehen lassen, denn manche Idee ist gar nicht so verkehrt, wenn irgendwann mal Bezug dazu genommen worden wäre, doch Abrams etabliert Dinge aus dem Nichts wie es gerade passt. Er jongliert hier munter mit immerzu bloßen Behauptungen, mehr aber auch nicht. Dazu hat nichts mehr eine Fallhöhe oder Bedeutung, geschweige denn emotionales Gewicht, wenn augenscheinlich radikale Wendungen im nächsten Atemzug wieder revidiert werden können oder Jedi-Kräfte gleich den Tod überwinden. Figurenentwicklung ist Mangelware und einzig Adam Drivers Kylo Ren trägt einen maßgeblichen Konflikt in sich aus. So ist auch seine fragile Beziehung zu Rey noch die größte Stärke des Filmes. Die Szenen mit den beiden sind noch das klare Highlight. Auch hätte ich mir ein paar ruhige Momente und Stille gewünscht, doch so kann sich The Rise of Skywalker kaum entfalten und darf nicht zu Atem kommen. Man spürt deutlich, dass die Macher im Hintergrund lediglich von Film zu Film dachten und es nie eine übergreifende Vision für die gesamte Trilogie gab. Selbst die Prequel-Trilogie mit all ihren teils schweren Fehlern muss sich diesen Vorwurf nicht gefallen lassen. Rückblickend empfinde ich dann auch Episode VIII als den stärksten Beitrag zur neuen Trilogie. Sicher, auch dieser scheitert in sich, aber wenigstens hat Rian Johnson es versucht, Strukturen aufzubrechen und neue Wege zu erkunden. Abrams hingegen dreht sich immerzu im Kreis. Altbewährtes scheint dieser Tage gefragter als neue Ideen. Schade, denn das Star Wars-Universum bietet gefühlt unendlich Möglichkeiten für spannende Geschichten. 5 von 10 mal von den Toten zurückkehren.

Wow this is amazing the cheapest movie to rent on YouTube 2.99. It is clear from the first 5 minutes of this film that it is going to be a mess. There is basically no exposition in the film, and I think that is possibly its biggest failing creatively of all its many failings. What exposition there is is flat out told to you instead of revealed. That is a really bad way to start a movie, and it suffers for it. The exposition which is explained to you at the start throws in about ten major shifts in the plot within those first five minutes which would be more properly suited for a climax in and of themselves, changing all the stakes and almost completely disconnecting this film from the previous two entries in the trilogy right from the outset. This was not a good creative decision by JJ Abrams, and the film doesn't really recover from that unforced error until about halfway through. The pacing of the film was designed for a hummingbird, with no time to even emotionally respond or absorb what transpires on the screen before we are off to the next bit of convoluted madness. There should have been half as much plot but twice as much time spent with the remaining half and half as many characters but twice as much time spent with the remaining characters. Less is more and show don't tell these are fundamentals of movie-making J. J. Abrams should know at this point in his career. The film is technically sound in a lot of ways. The action is itself very pretty, but without character development there are no stakes. Why should you care what happens? Whether people almost get shot or do get shot or blown up, why should you care if you aren't invested in those people because you know them? The acting isn't that bad, but there was very little acting demanded given the lack of narrative and character development. This is the worst Star Wars movie that has ever been made, in my opinion. It is worse than Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. At least that movie had a cognizable narrative, even though it was a terrible and boring narrative. The acting is better in this movie than some of the characters in that movie, but that is the only thing that is better. This movie was bad in a way that makes the previous movies worse. I wish I had not seen it.

2 hours of JJ trying to please everyone, without any intention of writing a good story. No character arcs, bad humour, unsatisfying ending.
