This is animmensely complicated film about the children of an SS officer and warcriminal. The father disappears. The mother gives herself over to theAmericans, and the children (aged 15 down to 7 months) are left to fendfor themselves and make a 500km trip to their grandmother's in rmany is in ruins. People are starving and sick. They deny theHolocaust and mourn their dead leader who committed suicide in abunker. Throughout it all, the 15-year-old lead character Lore mustsomehow get her siblings to grandma's house while slogging through thechaos of the failed Third Reich.

As I said, it's immensely complicated. It feels like a slice of lifeeven if it is fiction. The cinematography is excellent. The leadactress, all of 19 in real life, is obviously very talented. I gave thefilm a 7 out of 10 because it's a bit too disjointed for my tastes, butperhaps that's an effective way to portray Germany's disarray at theend of the war. Finding original stories related to the Europeantheatre of World War Two is difficult, however this film brings anengaging and refreshing lens to the period.

The film focuses on the events at the end of World War II including thedeath of Adolf Hitler, the tracking down of the perpetrators of theHolocaust, the aftermath of camp survivors, and the territorial carveup of Germany. A time of lawlessness, starvation and depredation.

Within this historical period the film focuses on 5 children brought upas Hitler's Youth, who are on a journey to their Aunt's. The journeybrings both physical and psychological challenges along the way for thechildren. Lore as the eldest child takes on the responsibility ofguide, provider and parent. The historical events create the incrediblephysical tension in the film of a fallen 'utopia' with all of itspersonal dangers, violence, and hardship.

Along the way they encounter Thomas, a recently released from aconcentration camp. The ensuing relationship between Lore and Thomas, which is part survival, part attraction, part revulsion and partadolescent, creates the psychological tension that is at the centre ofthe film.

The film has echoes of the Films Downfall of the Third Reich andZentropa in its subject material. All three films by necessity aredeeply intense psychological films. The end of the world as most inGermany new it and the incredible psychological changes that theushering of an entirely new political, social and cultural regimebrings. In my world it is almost impossible to imagine, but thechildren that lived through this are still alive, still with us, theliving memories of that period of incredible turmoil. But 'Lore' proves that it's still possible to makea movie about an unknown aspect of the war.

In this case, it's the situation in Germany just after the victory ofthe allied forces. It's a very interesting perspective, because thingsget turned around. The Nazis are no longer powerful rulers, but haplesslosers, afraid to get caught by the Americans. And the Jews, althoughstill despised by most Germans, are the ones who get things done withthe allied troops.

The movie shows a country in an almost apocalyptic state, with deadpeople and destructed buildings everywhere. Citizens can't trust eachother and are willing to do anything for some food or powers are constantly shifting; an ally can suddenly turn into anenemy.

It's in this utterly destructed and disheartened country that a familywithout parents is finding its way, led by Lore, a girl ofapproximately 16 or 17 years old. Her parents, high-ranking Nazis's, have left her to hide from the Americans, and it's up to her to leadher younger sister and three little brothers (of which one is still ababy) to her grandmother in the north of the country. They have to begfor food and shelter, sometimes paying with the jewels her mother leftbehind.

Australian director Cate Shortland is very good in capturing the moodof desperation and defeat. She uses faded colours, almost like aPolaroid picture, and shows lots of close-ups. Not only of faces, butalso of hands, feet, clothes and shoes. It accentuates the oppressiveatmosphere in post-war Germany, and the terrible fate of the story gets a twist when the children meet a young man, who for somereason is willing to help them. The relationship between Lore and theyoung man is ambiguous, for several reasons.
