They insult the dignity of all struggling souls, and make utilitarians of all benefactors, and give false views of success. Few benefactors, on the whole, were ever more richly re- warded than he. He died Admiral of the Seas, a grandee of Spain, ??having bishops for his eulogists and princes for his mourners, ??the founder of an illustrious house, whose name and memory gave glory even to the Span- ish throne. And even if he had not been rewarded with material gains, it was enough to feel that he had conferred a benefit on the world which could scarcely be appreciated in his lifetime, ??a benefit so transcend- ent that its results could be seen only by future genera- tions. Who could adequately pay him for his services; who could estimate the value of his gift? What though they load him today with honors, or cast him tomorrow into chains? ??that is the fate of all immor- tal benefactors since our world began. His great soul should have soared beyond vulgar rewards. In the loftiness of his self-consciousness he should have ac- cepted, without a murmur, whatever fortune awaited him. Had he merely given to civilization a new style of buttons, or an improved envelope, or a punch for a railway conductor, or a spring for a carriage, or a mining tool, or a screw, or revolver, or reaper, the inventors of which have "seen millions in them. and been cheated out of his gains, he might have whimpered over his wrongs. How few benefactors have received even as much as he; for he won dignities, admiration, and un- dying fame. We scarcely know the names of many who have made grand bequests. Who invented the mariner's compass? Who gave the lyre to primeval ages, or the blacksmith's forge, or the letters of the alphabet, or the arch in architecture, or glass for win- dows? Who solved the first problem of geometry? Who first sang the odes which Homer incorporated with the Iliad? Who first turned up the earth with a plough? Who first used the weaver's shuttle? Who devised the cathedrals of the Middle Ages? Who gave the keel to ships? who was the first that raised bread by yeast? Who invented chimneys? But all ages will know that Columbus discovered America; and his monuments are in every land, and his greatness is painted by the ablest historians. But I will not enlarge on the rewards Columbus received, or the ingratitude which succeeded them, by force of envy or from the disappointment of worldly men in not realizing all the gold that he promised. Let me allude to the results of his discovery. The first we notice was the marvellous stimulus to maritime adventures. Europe was inflamed with a desire to extend geographical knowledge, or add new countries to the realms of European sovereigns. Within four years of the discovery of the West India Islands by Columbus, Cabot had sailed past Newfound- land, and Vasco da Gama had doubled the Cape of Good Hope, and laid the foundation of the Portuguese em- pire in the East Indies. In 1499 Ojeda, one of the companions of Columbus, and Amerigo Vespucci dis- covered Brazil. In 1500 Cortereal, a Portuguese, explored the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In 1505 Fracesco de Almeira established factories along the coast of Malabar. In 1510 the Spaniards formed settlements on the mainland at Panama. In 1511 the Portuguese established themselves at Malacca. In 1513 Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Darien an reached the Pacific Ocean. The year after that, Ponce de Leon had visited Florida. In 1515 the Rio de la Plata was navigated; and in 1517 the Portuguese had begun to trade with China and Bengal. As early as 1520 Cortes had taken Mexico, and completed the conquest of that rich coun- try the following year. In 1522 Cano circumnavigated the globe. In 1524 Pizarro discovered Peru, which in less than twelve years was completely subjugated?? the year when California was discovered by Cortes. In 1542 the Portuguese were admitted to trade with Japan. In 1576 Frobisher sought a North-western passage to India; and the following year Sir Francis Drake commenced his more famous voyages under the auspices of Elizabeth. In 1578 Sir Humphrey Gilbert colonized Virginia, followed rapidly by other English settlements, until before the century closed the whole continent was colonized either by Spanards, or Portu- guese, or English, or French, or Dutch. All countries came in to share the prizes held out by the discovery of the New World. Colonization followed the voyages of discovery. It was animated by the hope of finding gold and precious stones. It was carried under great discouragements and hardships and unforeseen difficulties. As a general thing, the colonists were not accustomed to manual labor; they were adventurers and broken-down de- pendents on great families, who found restraint irk- some and the drudgeries of their new life almost unendurable. Nor did they intend, at the outset, permanent settlements; they expected to accumulate gold and silver, and then return to their country. They had sought to improve their condition, and their condition became forlorn. They were exposed to sick- ness from malaria, poor food, and hardship; they were molested by the natives whom they constantly pro- voked; they were subject to cruel treatment on the part of royal governors. They melted away wherever they settled, by famine, disease, and war, whether in South or North America. They were discontented and disap- pointed, and not easily governed; the chieftains quar- relled with each other, and were disgraced by rapacity and cruelty. They did not find what they expected. They were lonely and desolate, and longed to return to the homes they had left, but were frequently without means of return, ??doomed to remain where they were, and die. Colonization had no dignity until men went to the New World for religious liberty, or to work upon the soil. The conquest of Mexico and Peru, how- ever, opened up the mining of gold and silver, which were finally found in great abundance. And when the richness of these countries in the precious metals was finally established, then a regular stream of emigrants flocked to the American shores. Gold was at last found, but not until thousands had miserably perished. The mines of Mexico and Peru undoubtedly enriched Spain, and filled Europe with envy and emulation. A stream of gold flowed to the mother country, and the caravels which transported the treasures of the new world became objects of plunder to all nations hostile to Spain. The seas were full of pirates. Sir Francis Drake was an undoubted pirate, and returned, after his long voyage around the world, with immense treasure, which he had stolen. Then followed, with the eager search after gold and silver, a rapid demoralization in all maritime countries. It would be interesting to show how the sudden accumulation of wealth by Spain led to luxury, arro- gance, and idleness, followed by degeneracy and de- cay, since those virtues on which the strength of man is based are weakened by sudden wealth. In- dustry declined in proportion as Spain became enriched by the precious metals. But this inquiry is foreign to my object. A still more interesting inquiry arises, how far the nations of Europe were really enriched by the rapid accumulation of gold and silver. The search for the precious metals may have stimulated commercial en- terprise, but it is not so clear that it added to the substantial wealth of Europe, except so far as it promoted industry. Gold is not wealth; it is simply the exponent of wealth. Real wealth is in farms and shops and ships, ??in the various channels of industry, in the result of human labor. So far as the precious metals enter into useful manufactures, or into articles of beauty and taste, they are indeed inherently valu- able. Mirrors, plate, jewelry, watches, gilded furniture, the adornments of the person, in an important sense, constitute wealth, since all nations value them, and will pay for them as they do for corn or oil. So far as they are connected with art, they are valuable in the same sense as statues and pictures, on which labor has been expended. There is something useful, and even necessary, besides food and raiment and houses. The gold which ornamented Solomon's temple, or the Mi- nerva of Phidias, or the garments of Leo X., had a value. The ring which is a present to brides is a part of a marriage ceremony. The golden watch, which never tarnishes, is more valuable inherently than a pewter one, because it remains beautiful. Thus when gold enters into ornaments deemed indispensible, or into manufactures which are needed, it has the inhe- rent value, ??it is wealth. But when gold is a mere medium of exchange, ??its chief use, ??then it has only a conventional value; I mean, it does not make the nation rich or poor, since the rarer it is the more it will purchase of the necessaries of life. A pound's weight of gold, in ancient Greece, or in Mediæval Europe, would purchase as much wheat as twenty pounds' weight will purchase to-day. If the mines of Mexico or Peru or California had never been worked, the gold in the civilized world three hundred years ago would have been as valuable for banking pur- poses, or as an exchange for agricultural products, as twenty times its present quantity, since it would have bought as much as twenty times the quantity will buy to-day. Make diamonds as plenty as crystals, they would be worth no more than crystals, if they were not harder and more beautiful. Make gold as plenty as silver, it would be worth no more than silver, except for manufacturing purposes; it would be worth no more to bankers and merchants. The vast increase in the production of the precious metals simply in- creased the value of the commodities for which they were exchanged. "Richard Jewell" is a docudrama among the best this year and any year. Director Clint Eastwood has a gift for depicting ordinary men of every kind heroically under stress (think recently of American Sniper, The Mule, and Sully. The titular hero is a schlubby security guard ( I study the penal code every night" at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympic Games with a heavy southern accent, ready to be profiled as a bomber. But he isn't a bomber. Eastwood and writer Billy Ray take a long time to establish Jewell as a nice but seemingly dense character ripe for the FBI's profiling. As the character develops, he is much brighter than he appears, and his stereotypical affection for his mom (Kathy Bates) is genuine rather than a support for the perception of him as a candy-assed momma's boy. Hauser is so good at enlisting our affection despite the good-ol' boy cliché that he should be nominated. Kathy Scruggs (Olivia Wilde) the Atlanta Journal-Constitution fiery reporter, who breaks the news about the FBI's interest in Jewell as bomber, is depicted as a go getter who would be willing to sleep with her informants. Whether true or not, the noise surrounding the sexist nature of the role is warranted; sadly, the real Scruggs is unable to defend herself due to death. Her coming on to FBI's Tom Shaw (Jon Hamm) does nothing to advance the plot and is a gratuitous mistake even if it could be proven. Although "Richard Jewell" could stand accused of being a shout out of Eastwood's conservative nature, specifically denigrating media and federal government agencies, that orientation shouldn't be a part of any evaluation. Regardless, the film does the magical entertaining trick of making audiences move to the edge of their chairs even knowing he will be released from suspicion. Besides Hauser's outstanding performance as Jewell, Sam Rockwell's as his lawyer, Watson Bryant, is worthy of an Oscar nomination. Less manic than his usual roles, this one shows a brainy but eccentric attorney with heart just below the surface. Rockwell makes the film tense, light, and believable.

Since I really like the real nerdy shit of award season, I wanted to make another post about the ins and outs of this Oscar race, which is really heating up before the beginning of the end-of-the-year critics prizes and the nominations for the precursor awards. So, without further ado, the contenders. -Just Mercy/Waves/Knives Out: First off, let's check on the flicks that haven't made much movement since Toronto. After the positive (but not that positive) reviews, it's beginning to look like Jamie Foxx is the only part of Dustin Cretton's courtroom drama to have a chance at a nomination, and that is also getting harder every day because of how crowded the Supporting Actor race is becoming. That is also becoming the case with Waves and Sterling K. Brown, although Trey Edward Shults' family drama got a couple of Gotham nods. Meanwhile, while Knives Out drew plenty of praise during TIFF, the next (and crucial) move for Rian Johnson's whodunnit is to make sure that the film draws a lot of attention at the box office when it releases wide on November. If the movie fails in that aspect, its chances for Oscar nominations will die. -Ad Astra: More like Sad Astra" is what Disney/Fox executives must be thinking after looking at the box office results for the James Gray space drama, which cost close to 100 millions (post reshoots) to make, and after a month only grossed 124 millions. The movie was received by general audiences worldwide as coldly as Tommy Lee Jones would receive a son that he abandoned decades ago to go look for aliens. Even though that makes somewhat of a flop for the industry and kills any chance at major nominations, we can bet that the film will find its way towards some craft nominations, like Visual Effects or Production Design. And besides, Brad Pitt doesn't have to worry that much, because he has another ticket to Oscar night. -A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood: Not much is happening in the Mr. Rogers front, except that it was confirmed by Sony that Tom Hanks will campaign for the Best Supporting Actor awards with Marielle Heller's new film. While nobody expects Matthew Rhys to make a splash at the Best Actor race, Hanks is virtually assured to get nominated. Although we said that before with Road to Perdition. And Catch Me If You Can. And Captain Phillips. And Bridge of Spies. And Sully. And The Post. -Dolemite Is My Name: While the movie itself was deemed conventional after its TIFF premiere, the Rudy Ray Moore biopic is still running the comeback narrative for the Eddie Murphy campaign for Best Actor. Tomorrow, the film will pop up on Netflix worldwide, so expect a tweet next week that says "A gazillion households love Eddie Murphy" as the streaming bump tries to happen. -Hustlers: Speaking of popularity bumps, the acclaimed Lorene Scafaria crime dramedy based on real events has slayed the box office, grossing 130 millions worldwide on a 20. 7 million dollar production budget. That spotlight should help it during the efforts to reach a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination, but the real campaign worker is definitely named JLo. While the chances at a Best Supporting Actress nomination are steady, she has played an interesting card by booking the half time show performance alongside Shakira during the next Super Bowl, which takes place a week before the Oscars, during the last stage of voting. If that's not a flashy way to use your pop persona to say "for your consideration" then I don't know what this is. -Jojo Rabbit: Cheer up, Jojo, the critics don't matter. After getting mixed reviews at TIFF, the Taika Waititi WW2 comedy shocked Film Twitter after getting the coveted Audience Award of the festival, which often predicts frontrunners for the Best Picture race. The last winner? Green Book. After that, the film just started to open with some healthy limited per-theater-averages, so the race is far from over for imaginary Hitler. -Harriet: After the mixed reviews at TIFF, the Kasi Lemmons film dropped out of the race for the most part, so now is Cynthia Erivo's race to avoid getting thrown out of the Best Actress race. Though, if things get too heavy, she still can get EGOT-completion chances by campaigning "Stand Up" for Best Original Song. -Marriage Story: The Noah Baumbach divorce dramedy remains steady in its praise and hype, with Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Laura Dern holding their high positions in the acting races, and the 3 nominations at the Gotham started the parade of award ceremonies. It's gonna take a heavy storm to make this movie lose out on the Best Picture race. -Ford v Ferrari: While the James Mangold car drama builds some nice box office predictions for its November release, the crowdpleaser's chances at the Oscars were dealt a blow when it was revealed that both Christian Bale and Matt Damon will campaign for Best Actor for their performances. While it's nice that they're avoiding the usual category fraud that happen every year in these types of movies, this pretty much kills the chances for both of the guys to get a nod, because the Best Actor category is too crowded this year and there's no way that they don't split the votes (even if way more people like Bale's performance better than Damon's. The film will really need to take over the below-the-line categories to have a chance at a Best Picture nomination. -The Two Popes: I keep warning you people, WATCH OUT FOR THOSE POPES. Every week there's a report or two of the Vatican clash killing it at an event that sounds made exclusively for old Academy voters, while the director Fernando Meirelles, the screenwriter Anthony McCarten and Jonathan Pryce are working the circuit hard. Don't be surprised if this charmer comes out to shine at the morning of the nominations. -Uncut Gems: Film Twitter wants Oscar Nominated Actor Adam Sandler to be a thing after losing it because of the trailer, and the Gotham Awards agree, with 3 nods for the Safdie bros' new thriller. If enough critics rally around the Sandman, he might have a chance for an Oscar nod. -Judy: The Best Actress race doesn't have the intense struggle of the last couple of years, and some people are beginning to call Renee a winner. While the critical consensus on the movie in general is a well articulated "meh" the Judy Garland biopic has made a nice case for itself at the box office, with 29 million dollars grossed worldwide so far. That's, like, three The Goldfinch. Everybody seems to want the Zellweger comeback, and she's been working a hard campaign. But don't rush to conclusions, because the race is far from over. -The Farewell: After becoming the only indie hit of the summer, the Lulu Wang dramedy now has the job to remind people of its existence between all the flashy new contenders. The Gotham members seem to remember, because they gave the film 3 nominations. Still, Wang, Awkwafina and Zhao Shuzhen have some more work to do to keep the attention. -Joker: Speaking of attention, have you heard of a little movie called El Bromas? Yeah, of course, it already made over 700 million dollars worldwide, it's gonna become the highest grossing R-rated movie ever, the tourists are bothering everybody in the Bronx to take some Insta bait pics on the infamous Gary Glitter steps, and more. We already know that Joaquin Phoenix is the lockiest lock to ever lock for a Best Actor nod, but now the box office has pushed the Todd Phillips gritfest towards the Bohemian Rhapsody space, where the movie's popularity really tempts the Academy voters to consider the ratings that would come with a Best Picture nomination. Man, we sure live in a society. -Parasite: In better news, the Bong Joon-Ho class satire/thriller/dramedy continues to be the rare international sensation at the US box office. After making the best per-theater-average since La La Land with its opening in New York and Los Angeles, its second weekend almost got it at the box office Top 10, while also being in just 33 screens. The hype is real, and the Bong Hive is growing in numbers. Best International Film is a lock, and now Neon is also campaigning for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Song Kang-ho. -Pain and Glory: While South Korea takes the attention, Spain also wants some of that Oscar love. Sony Pictures Classics is rolling out Pedro Almodóvar and Antonio Banderas for this filmmaker drama that, while not as flashy at the box office as other contenders, is magnificent and hangs on to the fight for Best International Film and Best Actor. -The Irishman: Martin Scorsese didn't disappoint with the NYFF premiere of his latest crime drama, and now both he and Robert De Niro solidify as contenders for Best Director and Best Actor, as the film sticks a flag on the Best Picture territory. On top of that, Al Pacino has the best raves that he received in decades for his performance of Jimmy Hoffa, and he looks very determined to get a Best Supporting Actor nod, which would be the first one for him since the year that he both won for Scent of a Woman and lost for Glengarry Glen Ross. Also, there are very possible nods for Joe Pesci, the Steven Zaillian screenplay, the GOAT editor Thelma Schoonmaker and more. It's almost as if this Scorsese guy can say what he thinks about them Marvel movies with a little respect, James Gunn and Bob Iger. -Bombshell: Another contender that recently revealed itself was the Jay Roach drama about the women suffering the sexually abusive atmosphere of Fox News and Roger Ailes. While the film itself didn't receive exactly raves, the three actresses leading the story were praised. Of those three, two have chances to get nominated. Maybe they cant use your memoirs of substance addiction in high school to slander their innocent enemies, as they used Mark Judge (destroying his career) to smear Brett Kavanaugh. Criminalizing Dissent in America The Deep State, the media, our countrys richest corporations and leading universities, its wealthiest cities and most populous states are all colluding to make you irrelevant. More than that, to cast you as criminals ? to make your support of Donald Trump equal “racism, ” which equals Nazism, which equals their right to punch you in the face. To dox you, get you fired, harass your spouse and kids. But really, finally, to take your country away. To drown your backwardness in floods from impoverished countries, immigrants who will vote as theyre told to. In case you forgot or werent born: Richard Jewell was the hero who discovered the bomb at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. A mere security guard (with failed law enforcement hopes) he convinced the real cops to let him evacuate hundreds of civilians. That saved countless lives. But one victim died, and 111 were injured. And the feds couldnt find the culprit. So they rounded up the usual suspect: an overweight white male Christian “loner, ” a gun-owning churchgoing Baptist who lived with his mama. As Steve Sailer details in his stellar review of this film, Jewell was the “Great White Defendant” that Tom Wolfe cited in The Bonfire of the Vanities. Rural, conservative churchgoing pale males were the Democrats villains of choice as far back as the middle 90s. And they hunted Richard Jewell as ferociously as Ahab did Moby Dick. The System All But Destroyed Him I found this movie wrenching. I broke down, literally sobbing, six or seven times. Now dead from a heart attack at age 44, Richard Jewell was a simple, honest, kind and hard-working man. The kind of American nobody notices, but each of us counts on. And the System all but destroyed him. Director Clint Eastwood and an excellent cast make his (literal) tragedy come to life. When the FBI tricked him into falsely incriminating himself, I couldnt help but think of General Flynn. When it raided Jewells home and confiscated his weeping mothers panties, I remembered the dawn SWAT raid on Paul Manaforts home. And the spies, spooks, and liars who tried to crush Carter Page, George Papadopoulous, and Mike Flynn. The Democrats dont want the Richard Jewells of this world doing their jobs. Or voting. Or really, even existing. They certainly dont want the next Donald Trump to step?forward I thought of Mark Basseley Youssef, the Coptic Christian whom Hillary Clinton scapegoated for the Benghazi attack. In the films most powerful scene, Jewell finally casts off his inborn deference to law enforcement figures. Confronting the FBI agents who framed him, he demands of them: What will happen when the next rent-a-cop finds a likely bomb? Will he do his (low-wage) job and call it in, and possibly save lives? Or will he think “Do I want to be another Richard Jewell? ” and just run away? Help us champion truth, freedom, limited government and human dignity. Support The Stream ?
