Beginning in Haiti in the early sixties, Zombi Child" deals with voodoo and is one of the best and most poetic horror films in many a moon. It is obvious from the title and the setting that we are meant to think of a much earlier film with a similar setting but that would appear to be where the comparisons with Jacques Tourneur's "I Walked with a Zombie" ends for in the next scene we are in comtemporary France and a group of schoolgirls are being taught French history in a very white classroom.

What follows is a deliciously unsettling movie that manages to encompass the pains of teenage romance with a tale of the 'undead' as a metaphor for colonialism and it actually works. I can't think of too many examples in recent cinema where two opposing themes have been as beautifully united as they are here. In some ways it's closer to something like "The Neon Demon" or the recent remake of "Suspiria" than it is to Val Lewton. Here is a film with a creeping sense of dread, we've all seen films in which schoolgirls are not as sweet as they appear to be) and the grand guignol finale is as spooky as a good horror movie should be. It also confirms director Bertrand Bonello as one of the most exciting talents working anywhere today.

This simple gameplay change makes for a challenging and hectic experience. Though the first level introduces the concept slowly, later levels become a true test of skill as you monitor the massive hordes of zombies in each lane. To help keep the zombies at bay, Plants vs. Zombies grants you access to a menagerie full of lethal plants, each with unique properties. The Peashooter, for example, acts as a standard turret. You can also access unique and destructive variations like the Cherry Bomb, which will explode and take out zombies in multiple lanes. Be warned, however: you're not the only one with an arsenal at your disposal. The zombies you'll be taking on come in all shapes and sizes, and you'll need to learn how best to defend against the different enemy types. The game even includes a day-night cycle, with different plants and enemies available during each time of day. You'll have to stay on your toes if you hope to stay alive. Take down zombies in style A major part of what makes Plants vs. Zombies stand out is the colorful and distinctive game design. The graphics are vibrant and cartoony, with each plant and enemy type sporting a unique visual style that makes them easy to spot even on a crowded screen. The sound design is just as vibrant as the visuals. The exaggerated moans of the zombies play off the more whimsical sounds of your menagerie of plants while a catchy soundtrack tune plays in the background. Though it's definitely a zombie game, PvZ's design is full of color and life. Hours of play At its core, PvZ is a unique spin on a tried-and-true formula. You'll doubtless end up playing for hours at a time. Because it's well-suited to long gameplay sessions, players should be aware that some of the game's early levels are fairly slow. It takes a while before the difficulty begins to ramp up and the game actually starts to present a challenge. In addition, the gameplay can feel repetitive at times. You may start to notice a predictable pattern in how many of the levels begin. Combined with the lack of difficulty early on, it can be easy to write PvZ off as monotonous and boring. Don't fall into this trap: stick with it past the initial levels and you'll really see where PvZ shines. That said, fans looking for a more traditional tower defense experience should give Bloons a shot.
