Annabelle and Chucky will have to make room for Brahms on the shelf. Without any notably tense or memorable sequences, The Boy II manages to creep audiences out in... traditional fashion; horror aficionados, at least, should enjoy the ancient yet effective tactics employed here. Die unheimliche, bösartig impertinente Kinderpuppe Brahms hat in Teil eins offenbar nicht genug Unheil angerichtet: Neue Mieter, darunter Katie Holmes, sind in seinen Lebensraum eingedrungen und werden alsbald lernen, dass man die Bedürfnisse des Porzellanbuben besser gut befriedigt. Mit Eltern, die mit ihrem Kind in ein Haus wie die Heelshire Mansion einziehen, dürfte prinzipiell etwas nicht in Ordnung sein. Man kann ja groß dran sein und viel Platz brauchen, aber ein schlossartiges Riesengebäude mitten im Wald, das förmlich stinkt nach Spuk und Fluch? Da sind Probleme vorprogrammiert. Ehrlichkeitshalber muss man sagen, dass Söhnchen Jude (Christopher Convery, "Stranger Things") auch ganz bestimmt nicht ganz normal ist. Könnte er sonst eine Porzellanpuppe, die er schon bald nach dem Einzug auf dem unheimlichen Anwesen findet, zu seinem neuen besten Freund erklären? Anhänger des gepflegten Horrorfilms wissen schon, woher der faulige Wind weht: Bei der Porzellanpuppe handelt es sich selbstverständlich um den unseligen Brahms, der sich bereits im Vorgängerfilm "The Boy" bestens von seiner schlechtesten Seite zu zeigen verstand. Leider wissen Judes Mama (Katie Holmes) und Papa (Owain Yeoman) nichts von der Geschichte des Buben, der einst seine beste Freundin, seine Eltern und schließlich sein Kindermädchen ins Unglück stürzte. Und so wundert man sich auch ganz schön über die unheimlichen Vorgänge, die sich zu mehren beginnen, nachdem Jude seinen neuen Spielgefährten mit dem starren Blick ins Haus holt. Als Judes Eltern schließlich die wahren Hintergründe der unheimlichen Präsenz des Porzellanfrüchtchens erfahren, ist es vielleicht schon zu spät: Brahms hat nicht nur hohe Ansprüche, er ist bekanntlich auch nicht dumm, und für seinen eigenen Vorteil geht er bereitwillig über Leichen … Puppen mit Eigenleben ist berechtigterweise ein eigenes Horror-Subgenre gewidmet. Man kann sich an Chucky, Annabelle oder die "Poltergeist"-Filme wenden, um tieferes Verständnis dafür zu entwickeln. Brahms jedenfalls darf sich dank seines initialen Überraschungserfolgs nun an Katie Holmes vergehen. Das ist auf jeden Fall prominenter denn je. Brahms: The Boy II Story: A young family moves into the Heelshire Mansion where the son befriends a life-like doll named Brahms, in this sequel to ‘The Boy’ (2016). Brahms: The Boy II Review: Picking up after the events of ‘The Boy’, Liza (Katie Holmes), her husband Sean (Owain Yeoman), and their son Jude (Christopher Convery) move into the guest house at the Heelshire Mansion. Over there, Jude befriends a life-like doll named Brahms, and begins to exhibit odd behaviour to the dismay of his mother and father, as they try to communicate with the young boy to figure what’s going on with him. Katie Holmes hasn’t been in a lead role for a while, and she certainly brings credibility to her character with her performance. Holmes makes it easy to sympathise with the mother Liza, who is troubled by events that take place at the start of the film. This is also reflected on the son Jude, and Christopher Convery is quite unsettling as the young boy battling his demons. It also helps that the actor resembles the little doll, which makes for some creepy visuals. Owain Yeoman as the father Sean doesn’t feature as much within the story, but Ralph Ineson is effective as Joseph in his brief role. The movie’s cinematography and production design succeed in creating an eerie atmosphere throughout. Despite that, there are significant issues with the film’s pacing, especially in the second act. The film drags on without any significant plot developments, and although we get to see the effect Brahms has on Jude, it isn’t captivating enough. Other than one sequence involving bullying, the film trudges on as it heads to the third act, especially the climax, which only raises more questions in a frustrating manner. The entire setup goes to waste by this point because director William Brent Bell is tasked with a perplexing script by writer Stacey Menear. The writer also worked on the first film and oddly, chooses to flip its narrative. Even if you haven’t watched ‘The Boy’, this film starts with the potential to address Post Traumatic Stress Disorder but throws it away by the end. Besides some jump scares and the sporadic unsettling visuals, you won’t get much bang for your buck as a horror fan.
