When the camera zooms out at the end, it feels like the battle is happening in the page of a history book.
1917 netflix. I was accepted to be an Extra during the production of this film. I turned it down due to other commitments. I'm an idiot. It's beautifully made and has just enough action to keep tensions high and tug at the heartstrings, intimately depicting the human cost of war. I got emotional a few times.

I do caution that as a War movie, it's more of a drama than an action film. Sure there's action and suspense, and some thrills, but this isn't Saving Private Ryan or Dunkirk from a visceral standpoint. It's smaller in both scale and scope. 1917 follows a couple of soldiers as they journey to the front line carrying information which could save over a thousand of their fellows soldiers' lives. if they get there in time. It's in the aforementioned scale and scope where 1917 falls short of being great. The main plot of the movie suffered for not being big enough or feeling important enough. There's no storming of the beaches at Normandy. No rousing Winston Churchill speech at the end. The film doesn't connect the events it depicts into their greater significance in the war. Again, it felt small scale and narrow in scope. But to reiterate, I very much liked it. It's a lovely film filled with tension and emotion, think Kubrick's Paths of Glory without the 10/10 ending. Great work by all involved: Director Sam Mendes, Composer Thomas Newman, the whole cast and crew. One of the years best films, probably at the bottom of my top ten.

I loved this movie, the first thing I wanna talk about is the gorgeous cinematography, Roger Deakins camerawork is once again a thing of absolute beauty, every shot in this movie is incredible and the technique of making it look like 1 continuous shot is very well done, the best aspect however is undoubtedly the suspense, this movie is absolutely terrifying in the way its put together, much like actual war the action scenes in this movie are very sudden and can be very startling, and when theyre not going on you feel tense cause youre just thinking “Oh god whens it gonna happen again” its like standing across from someone whos holding a pin up to a balloon and you not knowing if hes gonna pop it or not, this movie frightened me on a level no horror movie in the past few years did, the action is also very exciting, its not the most violent war movie Ive ever seen or anything, in fact theres barely any blood at all, but those scenes are still very effective, theres not a ton of action in this movie but that didnt really bother me, I was still invested in what was going on, I guess my main issue with it is kinda the same one I had with Dunkirk, theres not really any characters to latch onto, its not like a huge detriment to the movie or anything but it is something I think couldve been done better, in the end this movie was fantastic, what it lacks in character or more than makes up for in its other aspects, the cinematography is amazing, the action is great, its filled with terrifying suspense and I was glued to my seat from beginning to end. 9/10.

The fact that the movie is done in one shot is enough to have me interested in it.
