This one is especially good as it is the first "disaster" film produced in Norway and it far exceeds American made films of this genre. You really care about the characters and the story and the special effects are excellent. It has English subtitles as it is in Norwegian, but don't let that distract you. Also, it is filmed in a gorgeous part of Norway, Geiranger Fjord (google it)and is based on a true story. They're filmed using a more muted color palette and usually have little in the way of special effects, gore or action sequences. The focus is always on the drama. As with most foreign films that make it to the USA, they are always always excellent (to merit the time and trouble of translation. ) In any case, it's just interesting to see another culture. "The Wave" is about a gorgeous little town called Geiranger in Norway. (btw, 'Scandinavian' means Denmark, Norway and Sweden. ) It imagines what might happen to it should an avalanche of the very real Akerneset crevasse ocurre. Rockslides in Norway occur frequently. When they occur above a fjord (narrow 'dead end' water canal through the mountains), the results can be catastrophic. In 1934, over forty people died as a rockslide 700 metres above the fjord created a tsunami that washed over the villages of Fjørå and Tafjord in Møre og Romsdal. A geologist named Kristian Elkjord, played by Kristoffer Joner, and his team monitor the Akerneset crevasse daily (as happens in real life! ) with sophisticated measuring devices that detect the slightest movement of the mountain face. The monitors pick up suspicious tremors just as Kristian has been transferred to a new job. While he attempts to mobilize the team to investigate the fissure more closely, his team rejects his call to notify the town below. The rest of the movie is about what happens from there. This is an excellent movie that will keep you glued to your seat. If you've never read subtitles, don't be afraid to try. You'll get used to it very quickly. No overt sexuality, no cursing, no violence. Just excitement and GREAT acting by all. I love a good disaster film - man against nature - this one doesn't disappoint. You only realize it's a 'small' film - in terms of scale- vs a Hollywood film. It excels in story line and functioning, healthy, loving nuclear family is nice to see for a change. It seems like every Hollywood film about a disaster features families in various disfunctional states. Also there is a non explicit loving sexuality on the screen between the parents that is very European and so not American. fEven the cliche teenager who puts others in peril due to his/her insolence is treated softer and more real in this film. In American films the teenager is such an idiot they deserve to die. This one not so. The story line is familiar - smart scientist has a hunch no one else believes, he's about to leave his work behind, but is pulled back in by necessity. Maybe it's the acting or the fact that a sterotypical storyline sounds deeper in Norwegian- but you go with it and I didn't roll my eyes once. Once the wave hits, there are various life/death situations portrayed and just when you think it is over, it's not. I see a lot of comments below about the subtitles. 1. if you rent from Amazon and discover it's subtitled, I do believe they will refund your money, so no reason to be giving this film 1 star based on that. And 2. i'm not a subtitle fan, but I didn't mind it, the story and visuals really carry you. You'll get swept away (pun intended) in the film and not notice them. It is such a tourist attraction, that 120-140 cruise ships a year dock to see the beauty. It us here we meet Kristian, played by Kristoffer Joner, who is an engineer employed by Geiranger Warning Center. The warning center is necessary to overlook all of the data that may foretell a rockslide. Many of us remember the tusnami that occurred in Japan after an earthquake. A rockslide can do the same. We follow Kristian and his family who are packing up for a move to a new city and a new job. This film is about his warning that something was happening, but everyone else said it was a mistake. The film is realistic and provides a lot of tense moments, and of course, it revolves around Kristian and his family. If you like action oriented tense films, this one is for you. Plus we get to see this beautiful area of Norway. Don't be put off that it has subtitles because they are easy to read and I enjoyed it more than a lot of Hollywood disaster movies. The special effects of the wave were great and it is nicely filmed. The atmosphere is extremely tense throughout the movie, and you really start to care about the main character and his family. I was on the edge of my seat at the final few scenes! I was a little disappointed that there were no special features on the DVD, for the small price I paid it is worth it. I would strongly recommend! Kristian (played by the excellent Kristoffer Joner), a geologist working near a fjord, is leaving to go and work in Stavanger for a big oil company. Just as he's packing up his office, he notices some changes in the figures for the mountain landscape but his fears are dismissed by his soon-to-be former colleagues. Turns out Kristian was right and part of the mountain is about to fall into the sea, causing a massive tsunami to overwhelm the small town at the head of the fjord where is wife and teenage son are. I'm not quite sure how to explain this because the cliches are all there but the drama and emotion seems very very real, I guess because the focus is one family who are really well characterised. It's not 1-dimensional at all like most disaster movies - San Andreas, 2012, Armageddon, Day after Tomorrow - it's much better than that and I always see the good in a disaster movie. Deep Impact is not on that list because I think it's an excellent disaster movie.
