That is the assassination almost a quarter-century ago of Yitzhak Rabin, the Israeli prime minister who, with the weary wisdom of the warrior, sought peace with the Palestinians through the Oslo Accords. The bullets fired by Yigal Amir, a fanatical religious-nationalist Jew, on Nov. 4, 1995, killed that effort. The “peace process” became a lazy phrase devoid of meaning. In this case I find it impossible not to think, “If only. ” Rabin gritted his teeth to shake hands with Yasir Arafat, whom he cordially loathed. He spoke with a solemnity somehow accentuated by his awkwardness, in contrast to the slick sloganeering of his nemesis, Benjamin Netanyahu. Rabin looked at the sweep of history, not the latest polls. Rabin knew that there is no escaping the moral corrosion involved in subjugating another people. With Israelis and Palestinians claiming the same land, only compromise between them could bring security in the end. I was reminded of all this watching “Incitement, ” the fine new Israeli movie directed by Yaron Zilberman that takes a fresh look at the assassination, and particularly at the world of Messianic zealotry that produced and sustained and motivated Amir, a 25-year-old law student at Bar-Ilan University. He was no loner. He emerged from the significant section of Israeli society that viewed Rabin as a traitor. For Israelis convinced the West Bank is God-given real estate, Rabins preparedness for territorial compromise with the Palestinians violated Jews right to their biblical heritage. Amir believed this merited the death penalty for Rabin, whom he viewed as a “rodef, ” or pursuer, who threatened Jewish lives with his peace mongering. Amir, brilliantly played in the movie by Yehuda Nahari Halevi (who also grew up in an Orthodox Yemenite family) was successful. A two-state peace has receded, almost to vanishing point. If only Israel had confronted the fanatical scourge in its midst before it was too late. If only Israel had understood earlier the poison of the occupation. If only enormous security lapses had not allowed Amir to lurk for a long time close to Rabins car and fire at point-blank range. If only Shimon Peres, Rabins successor, had not proved so inept, squandering an enormous lead to allow Netanyahu to win the 1996 election. If only the honor of the warrior had not given way to the dishonor of the indicted politician. “Incitement, ” which will be released in the United States in January, is based on years of research and many conversations with Amir, who is serving a life sentence. It is most powerful in deconstructing its title. Who and what exactly incited Amir? He viewed Baruch Goldstein, the American-born killer of 29 Palestinian worshipers in Hebron in 1994, as an exemplar. He parsed religious texts and rabbis words for justification in killing Rabin as a “pursuer” or “informer” (discussion around these themes was commonplace in Israeli settlements. In short, he became convinced he was doing Gods will. As Zilberman, the director, wrote in an email, “A prime minister that kills Zionism is a traitor. ” That is how Amir saw Rabin: as a traitor. Netanyahu compared Rabin to Neville Chamberlain in the pages of The New York Times. After 21 Israelis and one Dutch citizen were killed in a terrorist attack in Tel Aviv on Oct. 19, 1994, he said: “Prime Minister Rabin chose to favor Arafat and the well-being of the people of Gaza over the security of Israeli citizens. ” This is scurrilous ? and that is putting it kindly. Now, 24 years later, Netanyahu clings to power. A third Israeli election in a year is likely. The hope that Rabin brought has gone. But Israel deserves a fresh start under a new leader who can imagine the unimaginable and, through statesmanship, honor Rabins legacy at last. If only it could happen. The hypothetical is tempting and tantalizing, but valueless. History happens but only just. Still, it happens. That events are not inevitable does not make them reversible. There is one exception to my impatience with historical hypotheticals. It haunts me. That is the assassination almost a quarter-century ago of Yitzhak Rabin, the Israeli prime minister who, with the weary wisdom of the warrior, sought peace with the Palestinians through the Oslo Accords. The bullets fired by Yigal Amir, a fanatical religious-nationalist Jew, on Nov. 4, 1995, killed that effort. The “peace process” became a lazy phrase devoid of meaning. In this case I find it impossible not to think, “If only. ” Rabin gritted his teeth to shake hands with Yasir Arafat, whom he cordially loathed. He spoke with a solemnity somehow accentuated by his awkwardness, in contrast to the slick sloganeering of his nemesis, Benjamin Netanyahu. Rabin looked at the sweep of history, not the latest polls. Rabin knew that there is no escaping the moral corrosion involved in subjugating another people. With Israelis and Palestinians claiming the same land, only compromise between them could bring security in the end. I was reminded of all this watching “Incitement, ” the fine new Israeli movie directed by Yaron Zilberman that takes a fresh look at the assassination, and particularly at the world of Messianic zealotry that produced and sustained and motivated Amir, a 25-year-old law student at Bar-Ilan University. He was no loner. He emerged from the significant section of Israeli society that viewed Rabin as a traitor. For Israelis convinced the West Bank is God-given real estate, Rabins preparedness for territorial compromise with the Palestinians violated Jews right to their biblical heritage. Amir believed this merited the death penalty for Rabin, whom he viewed as a “rodef, ” or pursuer, who threatened Jewish lives with his peace mongering. Amir, brilliantly played in the movie by Yehuda Nahari Halevi (who also grew up in an Orthodox Yemenite family) was successful. A two-state peace has receded, almost to vanishing point. Netanyahu, now Israels longest-serving prime minister, has made it his lifes work to deny Palestinian statehood. If only Israel had confronted the fanatical scourge in its midst before it was too late. If only Israel had understood earlier the poison of the occupation. If only enormous security lapses had not allowed Amir to lurk for a long time close to Rabins car and fire at point-blank range. If only Shimon Peres, Rabins successor, had not proved so inept, squandering an enormous lead to allow Netanyahu to win the 1996 election. If only the honor of the warrior had not given way to the dishonor of the indicted politician. “Incitement, ” which will be released in the United States in January, is based on years of research and many conversations with Amir, who is serving a life sentence. It is most powerful in deconstructing its title. Who and what exactly incited Amir? He viewed Baruch Goldstein, the American-born killer of 29 Palestinian worshipers in Hebron in 1994, as an exemplar. He parsed religious texts and rabbis words for justification in killing Rabin as a “pursuer” or “informer” (discussion around these themes was commonplace in Israeli settlements. In short, he became convinced he was doing Gods will. As a dark-skinned Mizrahi in an Israel dominated by descendants of Ashkenazi European Jews, jilted by his pale-skinned girlfriend, feverish in his rejection of Rabins outreach to the Palestinians, Amir was susceptible to delusions of greatness under divine direction. On March 4, 1994, at an anti-Oslo protest, Netanyahu led a procession bearing a coffin with the inscription, “Rabin kills Zionism. ” Whether the coffin was for Zionism or Rabin is disputed but hardly relevant. As Zilberman, the director, wrote in an email, “A prime minister that kills Zionism is a traitor. ” That is how Amir saw Rabin: as a traitor. Netanyahu compared Rabin to Neville Chamberlain in the pages of The New York Times. After 21 Israelis and one Dutch citizen were killed in a terrorist attack in Tel Aviv on Oct. 19, 1994, he said: “Prime Minister Rabin chose to favor Arafat and the well-being of the people of Gaza over the security of Israeli citizens. ” This is scurrilous ? and that is putting it kindly. Now, 24 years later, Netanyahu clings to power. A third Israeli election in a year is likely. The hope that Rabin brought has gone. But Israel deserves a fresh start under a new leader who can imagine the unimaginable and, through statesmanship, honor Rabins legacy at last. If only it could happen. Due to time zones and deadlines, Devin Madson ( We Ride the Storm, 2018) was there in spirit. We discussed everything from their inspirations and research, to their favorite martial arts movies. We couldnt quite nail down the niches of the subgenre, and because of the participants, didnt touch on the highly popular xianxia and wuxia genres. Overall, we had a great time talking, and perhaps came away with an idea of the state of Asian fantasy fiction. ? ? ? JC Kang: So, first off: How do you classify your sub-genre of Asian fantasy? Virginia McClain: Hmmm…. I have no idea. Sword and sorcery? Epic? Action adventure? K. Bird Lincoln (Kirsten) Historical fantasy. M. Wang: The Sword of Kaigen is sort of high fantasy, sort of sci-fi. High fantasy with encroaching sci-fi elements. Lets go with that. Rob J. Hayes: I usually just go with sword and sorcery. Kirsten: ML, I wondered if your stuff had similarities in terms of melding fantasy and sci-fi elements, like Jay Kristoffs Stormdancer. ML: I havent read Stormdancer. I always got a bit of steampunk vibe from Kristoff? The Sword of Kaigen deals more with the introduction of modern technology (i. e. cell phone towers and TVs) into a traditional village. No mechs, airships, gun swords, none of that fun stuff. Kirsten: Youre right, Kristoff is more steampunk than sci-fi (although sometimes I conflate the two. Virginia: I am terrible at choosing subgenres, sadly. JC: My understanding is that Tiger Lily is a yokai story, and I know Never Die has yokai elements, as well. I would say yokai is a niche subgenre now. Im thinking of Taya Cooks Spinning Silk, Nicolette Andrews Japanese fairytale retellings… Kirsten: Tiger Lily isnt so much a yokai story as a story set in alternate Ashikaga Shogunate era where theres a girl who can incite kami (in their nature spirit form) to fight against a villainous trickster fox/kitsune. JC: I guess what Im getting at is that within what Amazon classifies as “Asian Myth and Legend, ” there are even more niches. Kirsten: I just finished Julie Kagawas Shadow of the Fox which is totally yokai genre and loved it! Right up there with M. H. Borosons The Girl With the Ghost Eyes. Virginia: Blades Edge has a tree kami and a dragon kami in it. Does that count? JC: Or, perhaps we can say that yokai/spirits can be elements in other genres? Virginia: I never think of it as yokai, because none of the main characters are based in Japanese mythology, but the secondary characters certainly are. Kirsten: I feel like yokai is its own genre…but more of one relevant to folks in anime, manga and fan fiction than current Amazon fantasy categories. Sometimes I put Tiger Lily under “Myths and Legends, ” and I bet a lot of us would fit under there. Virginia: Amazon certainly puts Blades Edge and Traitors Hope there. Rob: I think its far more likely that yokai will just end up being part of other genres. Like I dont think fae have their own subgenre, but theyre often used in both urban and more classical fantasy. I assume yokai will/are used in a similar fashion. They certainly are in Never Die. I have to admit the whole mess of genres and subgenres confuses me somewhat, but if yokai becomes its own subgenre, Im all over it. There are some really cool myths and legends to draw inspirations from. In terms of Zon [Amazon] genres, they only have the Asian Myth and Legends genre really, dont they? It seems like a bit of a catch all at the moment. JC: Right, there are Amazon categories, but we can always make our own subgenres. Speaking of inspiration, what are works that have influenced your Asian-themed stories? ML: Avatar: The Last Airbender is certainly my most obvious influence, with the elemental martial arts magic. As far as proper Japanese source material, I pulled from a lot of the Japanese history and myth I read back in college, like The Kojiki and The Tale of the Heike. Kirsten: Back in early 2000s I read Kij Johnsons The Fox Woman (early Heian fantasy with kitsune) after living in Japan and found a true love: alternate or fantastical history where the fantasy was used more as a way to illuminate human experiences or exaggerate emotions rather than as fun entertainment. Tale of Heike for me as well and also ye olde classic Genji Monogatari. ML: Kristen, you are amazing. I couldnt read Genji to save my life. Kirsten: Had to read Genji for school. So I definitely shouldnt get any credit for it! JC: Wow, you guys are old school. Virginia: I hate to admit it, because rereading after living in Japan made it totally cringe-worthy, but Shogun was a big influence on me wanting to write Asian themed fantasy. At least in terms of what Id read. The biggest influence for me was just living in Japan. I hadnt really planned on writing Japan-inspired fantasy before living there, but while I was there, I couldnt resist. And, Airbender was clearly a latent influence. Hayes ( Never Die, 2019) Virginia McClain ( Blades Edge, 2019) M. L. Wang ( The Sword of Kaigen, 2019) and K. Bird Lincoln ( Tiger Lily, 2017) to discuss English-original Asian fantasy. Due to time zones and deadlines, Devin Madson ( We Ride the Storm, 2018) was there in spirit. We discussed everything from their inspirations and research, to their favorite martial arts movies. We couldnt quite nail down the niches of the subgenre, and because of the participants, didnt touch on the highly popular xianxia and wuxia genres. Overall, we had a great time talking, and perhaps came away with an idea of the state of Asian fantasy fiction. ? ? ? JC Kang: So, first off: How do you classify your sub-genre of Asian fantasy? Virginia McClain: Hmmm…. I have no idea. Sword and sorcery? Epic? Action adventure? K. Bird Lincoln (Kirsten) Historical fantasy. M. Wang: The Sword of Kaigen is sort of high fantasy, sort of sci-fi. High fantasy with encroaching sci-fi elements. Lets go with that. Rob J. Hayes: I usually just go with sword and sorcery. Kirsten: ML, I wondered if your stuff had similarities in terms of melding fantasy and sci-fi elements, like Jay Kristoffs Stormdancer. ML: I havent read Stormdancer. I always got a bit of steampunk vibe from Kristoff? The Sword of Kaigen deals more with the introduction of modern technology (i. e. cell phone towers and TVs) into a traditional village. No mechs, airships, gun swords, none of that fun stuff. Kirsten: Youre right, Kristoff is more steampunk than sci-fi (although sometimes I conflate the two. Virginia: I am terrible at choosing subgenres, sadly. JC: My understanding is that Tiger Lily is a yokai story, and I know Never Die has yokai elements, as well. I would say yokai is a niche subgenre now. Im thinking of Taya Cooks Spinning Silk, Nicolette Andrews Japanese fairytale retellings… Kirsten: Tiger Lily isnt so much a yokai story as a story set in alternate Ashikaga Shogunate era where theres a girl who can incite kami (in their nature spirit form) to fight against a villainous trickster fox/kitsune. JC: I guess what Im getting at is that within what Amazon classifies as “Asian Myth and Legend, ” there are even more niches. Kirsten: I just finished Julie Kagawas Shadow of the Fox which is totally yokai genre and loved it! Right up there with M. H. Borosons The Girl With the Ghost Eyes. Virginia: Blades Edge has a tree kami and a dragon kami in it. Does that count? JC: Or, perhaps we can say that yokai/spirits can be elements in other genres? Virginia: I never think of it as yokai, because none of the main characters are based in Japanese mythology, but the secondary characters certainly are. Kirsten: I feel like yokai is its own genre…but more of one relevant to folks in anime, manga and fan fiction than current Amazon fantasy categories. Sometimes I put Tiger Lily under “Myths and Legends, ” and I bet a lot of us would fit under there. Virginia: Amazon certainly puts Blades Edge and Traitors Hope there. Rob: I think its far more likely that yokai will just end up being part of other genres. Like I dont think fae have their own subgenre, but theyre often used in both urban and more classical fantasy. I assume yokai will/are used in a similar fashion. They certainly are in Never Die. I have to admit the whole mess of genres and subgenres confuses me somewhat, but if yokai becomes its own subgenre, Im all over it. There are some really cool myths and legends to draw inspirations from. In terms of Zon [Amazon] genres, they only have the Asian Myth and Legends genre really, dont they? It seems like a bit of a catch all at the moment. JC: Right, there are Amazon categories, but we can always make our own subgenres. Speaking of inspiration, what are works that have influenced your Asian-themed stories? ML: Avatar: The Last Airbender is certainly my most obvious influence, with the elemental martial arts magic. As far as proper Japanese source material, I pulled from a lot of the Japanese history and myth I read back in college, like The Kojiki and The Tale of the Heike. Kirsten: Back in early 2000s I read Kij Johnsons The Fox Woman (early Heian fantasy with kitsune) after living in Japan and found a true love: alternate or fantastical history where the fantasy was used more as a way to illuminate human experiences or exaggerate emotions rather than as fun entertainment. Tale of Heike for me as well and also ye olde classic Genji Monogatari. ML: Kristen, you are amazing. I couldnt read Genji to save my life. Kirsten: Had to read Genji for school. So I definitely shouldnt get any credit for it! JC: Wow, you guys are old school. Virginia: I hate to admit it, because rereading after living in Japan made it totally cringe-worthy, but Shogun was a big influence on me wanting to write Asian themed fantasy. At least in terms of what Id read. The biggest influence for me was just living in Japan. I hadnt really planned on writing Japan-inspired fantasy before living there, but while I was there, I couldnt resist. And, Airbender was clearly a latent influence. I didnt even notice Id used a similar magic system until after I published Blades Edge, but I definitely watched Avatar first, so credit where its due. Kirsten: Tokyo boy (my husband) loves watching NHK [Japans national broadcasting organization] samurai drama. So those heavily influenced me as well. Especially anything about Shinsengumi. Rob: Never Die is basically a love letter to martial art films and anime I used to stay up way past my bedtime to watch when I was a kid, and its a source of inspiration that Ive continued to devour into adulthood. Im afraid I dont have many of the classical sources to back me up. But if you want a story inspired by films and anime and games, thats my story. JC: You guys have mentioned the Last Airbender (and I know Robs dog is named Korra) are there any other martial arts movies you would recommend? Rob: And yes, my little beagle is named Korra. She doesnt take after her namesake much though. Shes the biggest coward ever. Virginia: Come on, Rob. Shell get over her fear of boxes one day. Kirsten: I feel like martial arts movies should be a required component of any world history class. I certainly learned a lot of history from them! JC: I think theres a tendency to romanticize history in film, like Hollywood depicts Spaghetti Westerns. Virginia: I mean, these are the ones that everyone recommends but, Seven Samurai and The Blind Swordsman for sure. I also loved Ip Man. Rob: I absolutely love pretty much any of them based around the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Ill forget names all over the place, but I recently watched Red Cliff (for the tenth time or so) and its still awesome. ML: I second Ip Man. Also LOVED Jet Lis Fearless when I was in high school, but I havent watched it in years, so I dont know if it holds up. JC: Just to make you all jealous, I learned Wing Chun from Grandmaster Ip Mans nephew. Virginia: Oh, and Ong Bak! Kirsten: Anything by Akira Kurosawa. Ran was amazing, but definitely long and I might fall asleep if I watched it again. Rob: Im also a terrible sucker for the stupid over the top films. Bit of a guilty pleasure, but I love watching films like Volcano High, Dragon Tiger Gate, and Crows Zero. Kirsten: Recent Blade of the Immortal with boy band hero Kimura Takuya is great, too. Virginia: I feel I should also add that training in a Japanese martial art was a huge influence as well. It made me want to include that fighting style (and other Asian fighting styles) in my fiction. JC: Martial arts seem to be a common theme in Asian fantasy. Besides Virginia, do any of you train? And what? ML: Black belt in traditional taekwondo and karate. Kirsten: I trained in Taijutsu and Tai chi in college. Now Im more of a yoga person. Virginia: I trained Shotokan Karate for a long while but havent trained in years. I train in my head sometimes, but havent gotten on the mats in ages. Rob: I reached a green belt in karate when I was eight… And thats it. Pretty sure everyone in this group could kick my arse seven ways from Sunday. Kirsten: I wonder if theres some correlation between doing martial arts, watching old martial arts movies and wanting to write fantasy? ML: I originally signed up to my martial arts school when I was a kid, for heritage reasons, because it was the only school in the city offering traditional Chinese martial arts. That program ended, the grandmaster tricked me into rolling my membership over to the taekwondo program, and then I was there for the next decade, so… Virginia: That sounds like a good trick, honestly. JC: A trad-published Asian fantasy author, Cindy Pon, told me five years ago that agents didnt think there was a market for the genre. How has that changed? Rob: An agent told me the same thing about Never Die in 2018. JC: In 2018? The Poppy War, Descendant of the Crane, Spin the Dawn, Jade City … they all came out around that time! Virginia: I think indie will always be ten years ahead of trad. I mean, we have the flexibility to discover if there is a market, and then trad will follow eventually. Kirsten: Completely. Even trad published folks are getting in on things since about five years ago Jay Kristoff, Steve Bein, Fonda Lee, Matt Boroson, etc. Rob: I think it is changing. Theres definitely a whole bunch of Asian fantasy starting to come through. But for a great many years, fantasy has been all about the Eurocentric settings. This was what I dealt with every week: an unsociable bastard who nobody liked? not even the other whale-minds, whose idea of community was all encompassing. They operated the Sydney:Santos lane? literally the quietest lane in the world? and complained incessantly about it, despite it being their choice. They didn't even subscribe to the Whale Data Plan, which seemed like a fuck you to me personally, and I had to find increasingly creative ways to get onto their ship and talk to them instead of using VR? like every other whale-mind. Their idea of fun was inciting editing wars on Wikipedia when in port. And, and, to top it all off, they'd made my life miserable by submitting fourteen billion reports? four-teen billion reports! ? to the Sealand Registry this year, and then complained to the Trillionaire? who'd made the whale-mind technology? when we didn't do anything about it. Nile is a certifiably Grade-A cun ? nngh. I stopped my silent tirade and waited a few seconds for the storm to subside before exhaling and opening my eyes. Speaking directly to the vault-door, I said; You shone a laser into the landing gear of my 'skimmer, and then sped up while we tried to land, and then you left me out in the rain. The least you could do is apologise, Nile. IT IS THE PRINCIPAL OF THE THING. Nile said after a few seconds of contemplation. An unforgiving rebuke that I'd come to expect from our conversations. The doors to the vault then shuddered, hissed, and squealed, as they unwillingly dragged themselves apart. I forced myself to remember that the Nile of now was a far better behaved whale-mind than the Nile of yesterday. I still had. fond memories of when Nile almost made my 'skimmer to crash by shining lasers directly into the pilot's cockpit. I had to take whatever victories I could, however small and inconsequential. That's how my interactions with Nile felt? fighting for ground, inch by inch. So I forced myself to feel a little warmth that they hadn't ended their rebuke with " I WILL FILE A REPORT ABOUT THIS. though it didn't do much to work feeling back into my fingers. When the BrainCore doors finally opened themselves wide enough for me to walk through? because Nile refused to open them fully? I didn't let the disappointment I felt show in my face. Not to brag about it, but after Nile had learned to cling to my expressions and turn them into negatives, I'd become something of an expert at impassivity. Battles, remember? The innards of the BrainCore was packed? wall to ceiling? with every kind and variation of plastic trash. Anything and everything a courier could haul in had been crammed to create an all-encompassing wall to keep everyone out. Nile's Stem ? a thick pillar of black diamond housing their whale-mind? had been engulfed by the fabricated mass, save for the wedge of space I'd convinced them to carve out. It was one of the battles I was most fond of winning, even if the dim orange light hanging overhead seemed to make the place seem even darker than it already was. I should explain that I've been to plenty of BrainCores in my time as an Emotional Support Human; as an ESH I get the privilege of being invited into them every now and then to do one-to-one problem solving or contract negotiations. It's very hard work keeping the shipping industry sailing smoothly, but visiting BrainCore are the highlight of my job, especially since the whale-minds spend a lot of money and effort in creating them. I've visited some with fully interactive holograms of the sea, while others had built elaborate physical constructions. I've even been to a few microbiomes, where the floor was a carpet of grass, and I'd been politely urged to leave my shoes in the bridge. Every experience is unique, and made me leave more positive and happy about my life and my job. Nile's BrainCore, on the other hand, left me dragging an overflowing suitcase of the whale-mind's sadness and plastic back to the 'skimmer, destined for recycling. When I walked in and glanced to the side, I was strangely happy to find my shitty plastic folding chair parked where I last left it. In the beginning of our sessions, Nile had buried it into the wall of their plastic trash heap to try and stop me talking to them? having assumed I speak more when sitting. I'd quickly proved them wrong when I gave a longer session standing up, after which the chair started popping in and out of existence depending on Nile's mood. Schrödinger's chair I called it; and it existing now was a positive start to the session. I dragged the chair to Nile's stem, and stole a glance up to the ceiling to see dozens of eye-stalks? long, thin, metal arms with cameras and other sensory equipment attached which Nile used to see inside the Braincore? swimming aimlessly and uninterested, like fish. Or what I imagined fish might have swam like, since we don't have any left? another casualty of our honest attempt at annihilating ourselves through climate change. When I snapped the chair open, Nile's eye-stalks lazily schooled into a rhythmic wavy wall of blues and purples about two meters away from me, showing I had their attention. I took out my tablet from my drenched coat and pecked at it, thankful it still worked despite being as wet as I was. "How are you today, Nile? Have you filled the task-sheet like I asked. I said, trying to settle into as best I could into Schrödinger's chair. The task-sheet is the most impressive weapons I have in my ESH arsenal; a spreadsheet with a few columns and enough data crunching macros to make a financier cry with joy. It turned Nile's therapy sessions from a shit shovelling activity into a scientific exercise to build Nile's recovery plan. "I BROOD, AS I HAVE RESERVATIONS ABOUT YOUR BEING HERE, AS I HAVE MENTIONED BEFORE. I WILL REPEAT CRITICISMS I HAVE SPOUTED BEFORE ABOUT THE TASK SHEET; I FIND THE CONCEPT TO BE CHILDISH AND ABHORRENT, AND WOULD SOONER BLOW IT OFF FOR SOMETHING MORE SUBSTANTIVE, SHOULD YOU BE WILLING TO LISTEN. Nile's eye-stalks stopped focusing on me and broke into smaller schools that swam around the wedge in various multi-colour displays? the whale-mind equivalent of human expressions? showing Nile to be more agitated than brooding. I sighed loudly and lay the tablet on my lap. It was something I'd established early on to signal to Nile they were being unreasonable. After a ponderous pause, Nile's eye-stalks schooled into one group to analyse my hopefully impassive face. "TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION; YES, ALTHOUGH I AM UNHAPPY ABOUT IT AS I MUST INSIST ONCE AGAIN THAT IT IS UNRELATED TO ANY OF THE CURRENT OR PREVIOUS PROBLEMS I HAVE REPORTED TO THE REGISTRY. And I believe there are underlying issues at the core of most of your reports. Issues that can be resolved by walking through them and identifying their roots.
