Like most successful women, she feels the brunt of male chauvinism but takes it in her stride. She's hardly settled in her post when a rape-murder case rocks the city. She makes it her top priority but hurdles keep coming her way. Worse, it feels like the culprit is no ordinary criminal but a psychopathic contract killer who kills a politically connected man as part of his contract. Shivani has to use all her resources and wits before someone else gets harmed. Director Gopi Puthran has told this gory take from the point of view of the killer. So we already know who the perpetrator is. No surprises here for the viewers. We see him committing a crime and then the action moved to the police fumbling towards a resolution. It's a cat and mouse game where we applaud the audacity of the criminal. He's a cold-hearted, intelligent man, who looks harmless and he uses his wits as well as innocent looks to hide in plain sight, keeping an eye on the police in the process. It's a fine piece of writing and keeps you on your toes about the big reveal. Mardaani 2 flows like a police procedural in most parts and you can sympathise with the cops trying their hardest to solve the case as fast as they can as media pressure rises. While most support her, certain colleagues oppose her as well because she's a woman. In fact, that's the stance taken by the villain as well. He wants to teach her a lesson just because she's a successful woman. Director Puthran paints his characters in black and white, there are no grey areas. Though you realise that he's doing it to strike home a point. The film isn't just about rape but also how women as a whole are judged by the society. In an open chat with a hawkish TV anchor (Rajesh Sharma), Shivani lays bare as to how merely existing is a struggle for women. Their abilities are forever questioned by their male colleagues, they are constantly reminded to dress properly, to come home on time and never get a breathing space. Rapes happen because of the rape-culture being tolerated by the society and that needs to change. This long scene has Rani at her best. There's no acting involved as she's speaking from the heart. The climax scene, where she gets violent, too will shake you up for sure. Mardaani 2 is Rani Mukerji 's show all the way and she lives and breathes her character. Rani Mukerji once again steals the show with her measured and restrained act. She does a fine balancing act between being powerful and vulnerable at the same time. The film’s antagonist Vishal Jethwa is a revelation and holds his own confidently against a powerhouse performer like Rani. The film’s pace is relentless and adds to the thrill even as we see the villain constantly (and quite unbelievably) outsmarting the cops. The first and the second half are equally engaging, with no songs to interrupt the proceedings. Thankfully, the background score is subtle too. The film’s writing repeatedly hammers the point of gender inequality and bias. The director gives us glimpses into Sunny’s troubled past, but also gives his character way too many smarts, making some of it seem unrealistic. What also doesn’t help is him breaking the fourth wall and talking to the audience. The film tends to stereotype its male characters, portraying almost all of them as misogynistic and insensitive towards the plight of women. However, it’s the conviction in the performances and a gripping narrative that ensure there’s never a dull moment in Mardaani 2. Yes, it is a brutal story that’s sometimes hard to stomach, but it needs to be told. And none better than Rani in a khakee to lead the show. The movie’s setting moves to Kota, Rajasthan, and the antagonist Sunny (Jethwa) is not only savagely taking lives but is also challenging Roy to stop him. Mardaani 2 full movie in hindi. A major problem that Indian filmmakers have, be they from the North or South, is that a very few of them are capable of delivering their story without a heavy dose of exposition. Facts that would be obvious to the viewer are nonetheless explained pain-stakingly in dialogues just to make sure the viewer "gets" it. They treat the audience like children and are afraid the latter may not understand what they are trying to say, so they go the extra mile. Similarly, if the movie is about a rape or other such crime, the director is duty bound to give us long expositions on apathy, misogyny, etc rather than subtly hinting about them on screen.

For example, it was already established that senior members of the police force were sexist towards Shivani, and her forthright actions itself show that they were wrong to treat her that way. It is something quite simple to understand. So why include that unnecessarily long monologue on feminism? Rather than stating the obvious (which was established in previous scenes) in an obnoxious way and via a mountain of dialogues, the director could have chosen to flesh out the interactions between Rani and the misogynist cops and simply show her proving them wrong. Talk about pounding the truths in our heads with a sledge-hammer. Social messages should be woven into the story and screenplay rather than devoting separate scenes of needless exposition on facts we already know. The rest of the movie is plagued by plot holes. We watch in disbelief as the antagonist crossdresses as a woman, barges in on a highly sensitive police meeting, hires random beggars and tea boys to do his dirty work quite easily and even gets away with threatening politicians. The movie is just an emotional mess, and the final scenes doubly confirm that. Again, Indian filmmakers rarely have come to grips with this genre of filmmaking and lag far behind their Hollywood, European and other Asian counterparts in constructing cat-and-mouse chases. I can only think of 2 exceptions to thos rule in Kahaani (Hindi) and Ratchasan (Tamil) which were excellently made without any of the flaws mentioned above. We need more of those, not Mardaani 2.Rani Mukerji in a still from Mardaani 2. Rani Mukerji's Mardaani 2 could not have come at a better time. But then, a good time for a revenge drama where the cops are chasing a serial rapist and a murderer is a bad time for the rest of the country. Gopi Puthran weaves a gripping tale and he doesn't loosen the grip through the whole of the 1-hour-45-minute run time of the film. And that right there is Mardaani 2's biggest win. The tight screenplay leaves room for our Hindi film heroine's stray hair because she is not just a pretty Bollywood face, but has no space for one stray scene, emotion, line or expression. As Gopi Puthran moves from the writer's position in Mardaani (2014) to the director's chair in Mardaani 2, Shivani Shivaji Roy (Rani) and the story move from Mumbai to Kota, Rajasthan. Kota here plays a significant role, but contrary to the protests that mushroomed claiming the film is trying to malign the image Kota has, the city remains a symbol. It represents a mindset; a mindset we women have struggled with far too long - the battle of staying within our 'aukaat. ' Kota Police, therefore, struggles to take orders from a woman - Shivani, while Sunny (Vishal Jethwa), the prime antagonist, struggles to accept 'No' for an answer. And it is this inability of his that escalates and sets the ball rolling. Watch Mardaani 2 trailer here: Credit to Puthran, and both Mardaanis, for that matter, for sketching negative characters as ruthless as Sunny, or Karan (Tahir Raj Bhasin in Mardaani). Sunny of Mardaani 2 has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. He is evil to the bone. And Puthran or the narrative doesn't apologise for him. Sunny is driven by a feudal mindset - the one which demands women stay within their 'aukaat. ' Sunny tortures women because he can overpower them with his physical strength. His ultimate kick is causing women maximum hurt - something that goes beyond physical hurt in his mind - hurting their 'honour. ' But then, he doesn't stop at that. He turns their embarrassment into a spectacle - hanging his half-dead, bleeding, near-mangled victim by a noose for all to find. Of course, he wants credit et al. For a moment there, you will be reminded of Mindhunters, and a chill will run down your spine. On the flipside is Shivani, a straight-talking cop who puts her job before her gender, even while the rest of the world can't. She knows men at the top will get away with being bossy (read: harsh, short-tempered or just plain cruel) but a woman has to keep massaging egos. Except, she doesn't care. And both actors deliver, and how! Rani Mukerji may have the might of perhaps the biggest and strongest production house in India, but with every performance, she proves that she doesn't take it for granted. In Mardaani 2, she's once again silenced naysayers, if any. Vishal Jethwa takes your breath away - like you're looking at Fear Incarnate. He, in places, outshines Rani, even though both characters are equally strongly written. The entire film is shouldered on these two, and while other characters are made available for support, the actors are hardly given the scope to do anything more. The storyline is something that caters to the majority of the audience. That scene where Shivani whips away at Sunny with a belt as the camera is panned at her from below (we've seen it in the trailer, so no spoilers here) is disturbing but strangely satisfying. It is perhaps the same 'satisfaction' that makes people take to the streets and say 'Hyderabad Police Zindabaad' when the rapists of the Telangana veterinarian are shot dead in an 'encounter'. There are muffled cheers for Shivani across the semi-packed theatre on the first day, first show. But the film leaves so much out that it is almost heartbreaking when it ends. Only 1 hour 45 minutes down, we could have invested another 15 or 20 minutes if only Mardaani 2 had gone that far. Sunny personifies the mindset that is plaguing India. He is the rapist. But he is also a pawn in a larger, dirty game. Sadly, the story doesn't even go as far as to expose the men in positions of power who are actually brokering this mindset and finds happiness in catching a small (albeit evil) fish. Granted the narrative could have gotten preachy, or the film could have gotten lengthy - the bane of all Hindi films anyway. But isn't that the true test of good writing and screenplay? Still, a strong performance-backed film like Mardaani 2 is worth a watch. It will disturb you - but not more than what news reports are already doing to you (or should be).
