Ok, this little movie here started absolutely great, amazing execution for such a production, lovely tension build up, and managed to keep up this fast pace for quite a while. But the last part, it is quite disappointing actually, perhaps there was less room for imagination and they had to settle for an ending that did not deliver, created huge plot holes and had the viewer genuinely asking, What is happening and why? Dark Light managed to create a tiny world for itself, with its own rules, but most of it went down the drain once the third act came in place, and I can't stop wondering how things derailed so much. I am still going to recommend it for it is an effort far better than most, even tho it feels like a let down in the very end, it does deserve more attention and perhaps some praise as well. In the future, I hope the people involved in the making of Dark Light, take some extra time in order to offer their next projects a more constant tone, till the credits show up. Cheers.

Look we get it,... a good creature / alien is difficult to create,... but its what makes you or breaks you in the science fiction bizz,... they are rare and extremely hard to come up with,... that being said,... this film could have been a true contender if not for the failed attempt at creature effects!!! P. S. did so enjoy seeing the last make n model of the Isuzu Trooper so nicely displayed!!! PURCHASED,.. should have RenteD!!! OK entry for your alien / creature feature farmhouse collections!!! Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2019 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase It was promising, but the actual execution was shot to hell. *WARNING: THERE WILL BE SPOILERS BUT THEY'RE NECESSARY TO DEMONSTRATE THE PROBLEMS WITH THIS* Let's start with the good stuff: * Great initial idea. Reptilians/Hollow Earth conspiracy theories may be dumb beliefs, but they make surprisingly good horror subjects. Mixing it in with the old "this is why kids go missing! " angle is smart. * The creature design is mostly derivative (I'm pretty sure the upper and lower torso of this monster have been recycled since the original Pumpkinhead) but the facial design of the creature is an interesting twist. Clearly someone watched Netflix's Lost in Space redux. * Nice setting. Old farm houses in corn fields may be overused, but they never fail. And now the cons: * The narrative structure is horrific. It starts the first half using an out of sequence approach, jumping from past to present. But by the middle of the film, the production just abandons it and uses a normal, one direction, linear story. There's no hard and fast rule to how to write narratives, but doing this makes it seem like there's a bunch of plot details missing. There are sequences that seem to go missing. Some are minor- like when did the protagonist buy weaponry (it's covered by a line later in the film, but it feels like a post production correction to catch the omission)- but some are major- how did the night the ex-husband got shot start and more importantly HOW DOES THE HUSBAND SHOW BACK UP UNSCRATCHED AFTER BEING SHOT????? * There's also inconsistent writing in general. If that's her childhood home, how did she never encounter the things before? Why does the kidnapping of the daughter look like it was voluntary ("No mommy! " The daughter screams when the protagonist tries to shoot it)? How did the bodies go down River from the person transport when the truck wasn't actually in the water? * Piggy backing off the last point, it feels like someone started writing the film, communicated the idea of the film to someone else who started snoring off in the middle of the conversation, and then that person picked it up and and finished it. For example, the creatures feed off "energy"- and the effects clearly look like sucking bio-electric energy- but the film reveals that the creature is weak to electricity. If it feeds off electricity, wouldn't that empower it? Then there's the ending: there's a cliffhanger that shows multiple creatures in the fields, suggesting there terror isn't over. This would be great if it wasn't for the fact that really in the movie it was revealed there were multiple creatures, in the damn bloody field. The end result as you watch the finale is "Why is she trying to burn the whole house with one thing inside? She knows there's a ton of them and they're all outside. " So when we get to the reveal of a number of them in the fields at the end, it's basically "Uh, duh. NO SHOOT, SHERLOCK. " WHY are there nosebleeds? It's suggested that the creatures can addle people, but the protagonist got them without creatures present. Was there a plot point with this? In the end, the film fails because of both forced and unforced errors. Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2020 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase I appreciate the jump scares. But as others have said, this could have been so much better. The acting was lacking. It was did not flow well. I am not great at critiquing the film industry but I know when they are not well done. This one felt like a Hollywood production from a new comer is the best way I can describe it. It was like they had enough money but not very much experience. SPOILER ALERTS: And I don't think the writer or director did much research on middle earth creatures. There are tons of it. They should have been able to come up with a much more believable middle earth monster; something like a lizard/human. All crypto lovers know this. Also, dark light has nothing to do with middle earth people. They do not need our light. Its the creatures that come from the higher energies that are trying to live in the low energy places that need to steal energy from us. They no longer have access to the higher energies to sustain themselves, is my understanding. The middle earth creatures do have access to the energy they need. Although they prefer the sun, they have places in middle earth where they can enjoy a synthetic version. These creatures are dangerous to us if we go looking for them deep in the caves. They are jealous of us because at a certain point in our history, we were seeded by a far high intelligence which they believe they should have been chosen for. This is why we can not find the 'missing link'. There is not one. We were one thing. Now we are another but we did not evolve on our own. But the mid earth creatures are very intelligent, far more than those of us still only accessing our human brains for information versus our higher selves/minds. I was pretty excited when I read from another review this movie had to do with middle earth creatures. But it could have been so much better with just a little research. They did leave it open for a sequel. I would love to see that but with a little more work put in to it and maybe cleaning up the first one somehow. Or maybe someone else could re-do it; someone with some passion for the subjects.. Again, Dark Light has nothing to do with Middle earth beings although they are intelligent enough to tell even our scientists probably the truths about dark light and for sure the mistakes in our maths, and the dinosaurs we 'pieced' together to name a few subjects that we have, humorously to them, gotten very wrong. They say when we find their bones, because some folk refuse to believe they exist until there is proof of their bones, we add them incorrectly to our dinosaurs. You gotta see the humor in that. Good thing we can laugh at and with ourselves. And good thing more are coming to understand the things/forces we can not see are far greater than those we can see with our human eyeballs. Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2019 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase The story is good. The acting is for the most part ok. The feeding habits of the cool looking creatures were not believable. If the creatures made better sense, I might have given this an additional star. I can’t really recommend this film. It’s just mediocre. Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2019 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase Padraig Reynolds does it again with his latest creature feature. December 8, 2019 February 11, 2020 Dark Light, Ed Brody, Gerald Tyler, Horror Movie, Jessica Madsen, Kristina Clifford, Monster Movie, Movie Review, Opal Littleton, Padraig Reynolds, Vertical Entertainment A young mother returns to the family home after a series of misfortunes. In this case the breakup of her marriage, the death of her mother and a nervous breakdown. She simply wants a new start for her and her daughter but fate isn’t going to let that happen. It’s a common enough setup for a film and it’s what Padraig Reynolds (Rites Of Spring, Open 24 Hours) uses for his new film Dark Light. The recent past has taken a toll on Annie (Jessica Madsen, Leatherface, Rambo: Last Blood). Dealing with her mother’s illness and death along with the knowledge her husband was cheating on her caused a breakdown. Recovered and with custody of her daughter Emily (Opal Littleton), she’s moved into her mother’s now empty house. Or maybe it isn’t so empty. From the start, strange things happen and Annie is convinced she sees something in the house and the cornfields behind it. Something that wants her daughter. The local sheriff (Kristina Clifford, Butt Boy) is dubious. When Emily goes missing and Annie’s ex (Ed Brody) ends up on the wrong end of a shotgun blast she’s taken into custody. When the police van crashes she’s given a chance to escape and find her daughter at all costs. The first part of Dark Light is told in flashbacks as Annie is interrogated. This gets a bit confusing at times. Annie and the sheriff seem to transport from the interrogation room to other locations. After she escapes the film settles into a more normal structure. She consults Walter Simms (Gerald Tyler, The Lighthouse) an alleged expert on local strange events and at this point, the film shifts gears again. It goes from ghost story to monster movie with only a few lines of dialogue. Or possibly to the delusions of a homicidal madwoman as the authorities think. Unfortunately Dark Light has some gaping holes in its narrative. Just what are these underground creatures and why do they need human children? Why do doors open and close themselves, are the creatures telekinetic? Why is there a cache of weapons and large denomination bills under the floor of the house’s bedroom? There’s also way too much that we’ve seen before. The monster hiding in the back seat. All of the main players coincidentally ending up back at the house for the climactic showdown. The escape from the creature’s lair that evokes Aliens. And the sequel ready final shot. The creatures themselves are fairly nasty looking. All mouth and a huge glowing eye where their face should be. They resemble something that stalked out of an Italian Alien rip off. And they’re realized with practical effects too, actor Weston Meredith in a monster suit. That might make Dark Light worthwhile for monster buffs. For me though Dark Light just never really gets going. It looks good and it’s not boring, but it’s never overly exciting either. The elements are there, it all just lacks the spark to set it off. Track 15 on Concept Vague by Night Lovell, produced by Lovell himself. Though this was the song that gave him massive exposure, Lovell revealed in an interview that he hates the song, but continues to perform it as his fans love the song very much, and as it’s his most popular song to date. Lovell said he wrote the lyrics in his high school English class the day he recorded it, and the lyrics literally mean nothing. He said he had no direction in writing and “just threw words together. ” This is what inspired the name of Lovell’s debut album Concept Vague, as he says most of the songs on the album mean nothing at all. After uploading it to SoundCloud, it gained thousands of streams practically overnight, eventually gaining millions. Lovell said he was unaware of this until one of his friends texted him and informed him of the song’s popularity. “Dark Light” currently has over fifteen million streams on SoundCloud and 20 million on YouTube. The sample loop heard throughout the video is NOT sampled from Jaden Smith’s “Chase The Sun”, but a seed mantra that is chanted throughout meditation. Fun Fact: The song was the second song Lovell ever recorded.

Released on 26 September 2005, HIM began recording the album in March 2005 at the Paramour Estate is Los Angeles, California, with producer Tim Palmer, who had also mixed the band's previous album Love Metal. Dark Light also served as HIM's first worldwide release with Sire Records, with whom the band had signed with in September 2004. In Finland, however, the album was released under the band's own label Heartagram. Musically, Dark Light featured a more "polished" and "accessible" sound than previous albums, and was written as a cross between Black Sabbath and U2, also influenced by the work of composer Angelo Badalamenti. Dark Light received mostly positive reviews from critics, with many praising the writing and the band's performance, while some criticism was given to the second half of the album. Dark Light charted in fifteen countries, reaching number one in Finland, later going platinum, as well as gold in Germany, the UK and the US, making HIM the first Finnish artists to receive a gold record in the United States. Three singles were also released, with " Wings of a Butterfly " peaking at number one in Finland, and " Killing Loneliness " at number two. "Wings of a Butterfly" later received the award for "Song of the Year" at the 2005 Emma Awards, and was awarded at the 2007 BMI Pop Awards as well. During the album's world tour, HIM made their live debut in various countries, including Japan and Australia. Production In August 2003, HIM separated from BMG, after fulfilling their contractual obligations to the label. [1] In September 2004, HIM announced that they had signed a new recording contract with Sire Records, who would handle the band's future releases in Europe, the United States, Japan and Australia. [2] In their native Finland, however, HIM's recordings would be released through the band's own Heartagram label. [2] In March 2005, HIM relocated to Los Angeles, California, to start work on their fifth studio album at The Paramour Estate, with producer Tim Palmer, who had previously mixed the band's fourth album Love Metal. [3] After two days of rehearsals, the band began recording drums, which were done in two days. [3] [4] This was followed by the bass, and then guitars and keyboards. [4] The band were faced with multiple distractions during the recording process, including dogs around the estate, as well as a Playboy video shoot. [3] Because of this, the studio equipment was moved upstairs for Ville Valo to record his vocals, while the other members of the band flew to Las Vegas with professional skateboarder and friend of the band Bam Margera. [3] In May 2005, HIM recruited Andy Wallace to mix the album; however, he was fired only a week later. [5] [6] [7] According to Valo, Wallace lost the "melancholia" in his mixes, explaining: "It sounded fucking good, but it sounded like radio-friendly American rock [... ] and we're not that. " [7] Thus, producer Tim Palmer was tasked with mixing the album at Electric Lady Studios in New York, after which the album was mastered by Stephen Marcussen at Sterling Sound. [7] [8] Originally planned as In the Nightside of Eden, the album's title was changed to Dark Light, because the band felt that the latter would be a more memorable title, seeing as how this would be HIM's first album to be officially released in Japan, Australia and North America. [7] The title Dark Light was inspired by a book of the same name by Mette Newth, and was also thought up as a play on words; Ville Valo's last name translates to "light", and "dark light" in Finnish would be "pimeä valo", which in turn would mean that Ville Valo was "mad". [9] Dark Light also continues the band's tradition of "contradictions in [album] titles". [10] [11] The cover art of Dark Light was designed by Matt Taylor and Sonny Gerasimowicz. [8] Music and lyrics According to Valo, the band entered the studio with the idea of creating a cross between Black Sabbath 's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Achtung Baby by U2, and Dark Light has been described as more "polished" and "accessible" than HIM's previous albums. [7] [13] [14] The first half of the record was written long before entering the studio, while the second half was composed a month and a half prior, after Valo threw away much of the original material, because "it was too slow". [15] According to Valo, the band's approach on Dark Light was to make the songs sound more "cinematic, epic, and close to the listeners", inspired by the works of composer Angelo Badalamenti. [16] Valo also mentioned This Mortal Coil as an influence on the album's "spooky, eerie" sound. [17] Lyrically, Dark Light deals mostly with themes of "girls and boys and the politics of the heart". [11] "Vampire Heart" opens with a riff reminiscent of the theme to the 1978 film Halloween, while " Rip Out the Wings of a Butterfly " was described by Valo as a "link between ' She Sells Sanctuary ' by The Cult and ' Billie Jean ' by Michael Jackson ". [10] [12] The lyrics were inspired by a legend of immortal souls possessing the wings of a butterfly, and talks about: "Whether you are willing enough to destroy something beautiful to gain yourself some power. " [10] According to Valo, the song was chosen as the first single from Dark Light, because it was "the perfect song to describe what's going to happen on the entire album", containing all the signature elements of the band's sound as well. [18] [19] " Killing Loneliness " was partly inspired by professional skateboarder Brandon Novak and his heroin addiction, and talks about the various ways people "kill their loneliness, and with what", while "Behind the Crimson Door" features Valo humming a poem by Finnish author Timo K. Mukka. [9] [20] Valo described "The Face of God" as " Achtung -era U2, with Queens of the Stone Age meeting the Satanic Bee Gees ", and "In the Nightside of Eden" as the " prog rock " song of the album, which also makes mention of the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. [12] The band's cover of " Poison Heart " by the Ramones features claps by Sire Records' co-founder Seymour Stein and A&R executive Michael Goldstone. [9] Release and promotion HIM performing in Milan in September 2005 " Rip Out the Wings of a Butterfly " (under the title "Wings of a Butterfly") was released as the first single from Dark Light in September 2005, charting in ten countries, including at number one in Finland, [21] number ten in Germany and the UK, [22] [23] and at number 19 on the US Alternative Chart. [24] A music video was also produced for the song. [25] That same month, HIM embarked on European club tour to prepare for the release Dark Light. [5] The album was released on 26 September 2005, and charted in sixteen countries, including at number one in Finland and Greece, [21] [26] number four in Germany and Austria, [22] [27] and number 18 in the UK and US. [23] [24] The album would eventually be certified platinum in Finland, [28] and gold in Germany, the UK, and the US, making HIM the first Finnish artist to receive a gold record in the United States. [29] [30] [31] The North American leg of the album's supporting tour for began in Portland, Oregon, on 5 October 2005, and continued until the end of November, with Skindred and Flinch serving as supporting acts. [32] In November 2005, "Vampire Heart" was released as a promotional singles from Dark Light. [33] For the 2005 edition of the band's annual New Year's Eve shows, the event was expanded into a festival and renamed Helldone. [34] The band were scheduled to begin a tour of the UK and Ireland in January 2006, but were forced to postpone it until February, after guitarist Mikko "Linde" Lindström fractured his wrist after Helldone. [35] At the 2005 Emma Awards, HIM went on to win "Rock Album of the Year", and "Song of the Year" for "Wings of a Butterfly". [36] On 9 February 2006, HIM began a joint seven-date tour with The Rasmus and Negative across Central Europe, after which HIM continued through Southern Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. [35] [37] Also in February 2006, " Killing Loneliness " was released as a single, charting in five countries, peaking at number two in Finland. [21] Two music videos were produced for the song, the latter of which featured a guest appearance by tattoo artist Kat Von D. [38] [39] From May to June 2006, HIM toured the US with Aiden acting as support. [40] In August 2006, HIM were nominated by Kerrang! for "Best Band on the Planet". [41] In September 2006, HIM cancelled a forthcoming North American tour, in order to begin work on a new album. [42] "Under the Rose" was also released as the final promotional single from Dark Light in 2006. [43] In October 2007, Ville Valo was awarded at the BMI Pop Award for "Wings of a Butterfly". Dark light (beatshoundz & volb3x remix) by night lovell. This is a low budget SciFi mystery with an interesting premise but poorly directed with stilted dialogue. It still kept my interest but I had to fast forward the slow parts. The story was straight forward and predictable with no surprises and the CGI was ok given its limited budget. I think if they sharpened the script more with better pacing and direction it could have been more suspenseful.

The main monster feels like a "Silent hill" game or movie borrowing. In general this entire narrative would fit a Video game rather than a movie. A strong woman takes her gun in order to protect her family, later on a "bulb head" monster appears and supposedly dies in fire. No plots, no twists, no beautiful nature scences - just a good old movie about a monster praying on people in a remote location. I do not understand all the good reviews. I do see how fans of the genre could give it 5, 6 or even 7 for good efforts. But for the rest of us this movie is nearly unwatchable. Unfortunately, because the opening scenes got me intrigued.
