I just dont understand how Laurie didnt see it coming Jos “love” for him is so obvious you can tell that hes infatuated with her while she is merely platonic and you can tell by the body language and everything its crazy. I had high hopes for this film, but they weren't fulfilled. I don't think I should say "based on" the novel. I should say "somewhat related to" the novel. Director Gerwig has spread out the story so that it's not only about Jo. That's OK. However, because the book is written in Jo's voice, she is the key player. In 1933, Jo was portrayed by Katherine Hepburn. In 1949, by June Alyson, and in 1994, by Winona Ryder. They were all great. Saoirse Ronan plays Jo in this version, and she's excellent. The problem for me came in the casting of the French actor Louis Garrel as Professor Bhaer. He's described in the novel as a middle-aged, philosophically inclined, and penniless German immigrant in New York City, who was a noted professor in Berlin. Louis Garrel is a handsome man, age 33, but looking more like age 25. What young woman with Jo's temperament wouldn't want to marry him? However, that wasn't what Alcott wanted us to see. She took the hard path; Gerwig took the easy one. The movie has an all-star cast, but the actor that carried the film for me was Laura Dern as Marmee. The camera has always loved Dern, and it still does. Director Gerwig got that one right. We saw the movie at Rochester's excellent Little Theatre. I think it will work well on the small screen. Note that I entitled my review, A Minority View." The movie has a very high 8.3 IMDb rating. My daughter- who knows movies- thought it was great. However, I think you'd do better with Katherine, June, or Winona.

She always used to tell me how great she thought it was although, as a kid I somehow avoided reading it; mainly because at this point I was too busy dangling from a climbing frame by my ankles or stealing scrap wood from building sites in order to make dens and tree houses. As it is prominently placed on the 1001.. My copy of this is probably 55 years old -- I've probably read it at least twenty-five times. One of my all-time favorite books. One of my favorite authors ever. Yes, it is old-fashioned -- it was old-fashioned fifty-five years ago. But that is the point pretty much in my opinion. This is a story of times past, of a family which functioned in a particular way in a particular time. " I was under the impression that I had missed Little Women in my youth and that it was one of those gaps in my education that keep nagging me. Then I started reading it, and realised that I know all characters, and the story, and the feeling of the novel as a whole. So either I have developed a psychic connection to my "to-read"-shelf, or I have actually NOT missed out on Little Women in my adolescence, just forgotten the.. I have read 18 of Louisa May Alcott's books, so I guess I can safely say that I am very familiar with her work. Some of them were very good, some not quite as good. A bunch of women whining about their circumstances rather than the strong women I grew up loving. Acting sounded like a dramatic reading rather than believable. The formidable Aunt March was reduced to a high paid walk on. First half confusing unless you are a fan of the book because it flashes back and forth so you only get glimpses rather than true character development. Watch 1994 movie or masterpiece theatre miniseries instead.

Out of all the scenes. When Saoirse frantically says “my sister! my sister!” I BAWLED in the theatre. The only scene that had me producing waterfalls. Well, from what I could see, laurie fell in love with jo when he was still a boy, when he don't know any better, but when he grew up and becomes a REAL MEN, then it's obvious he fell for amy because amy is more balance and mature than jo who is nothing but a selfish person and refuse to actually reason with anything since she thinks she knews better and others are just less than her, she thinks the world revolves around her, such a snob. If beth is the best of them (these little women) then jo is the worts of them. I met people like jo in real life often and her type is the worst and gotten on my nerve the most. Arrogant, pompous person who thinks the world owes them. Don't get me wrong, I have some of jo's qualities in me (always speaking my mind, bad temper, loves writing, etc.) But I knew not to give in to those bad side of mine too much, I have to control it because I knew what's right and wrong so I won't let my weaknesses (bad side) of me took over me and my life. I don't associate with just one of these women, I feel like I have a bit of each of these womens qualities. I like the story but the feminist side just ruined it for me. At the end of day we are all humans, so stop comparing yourself (women) as somerhing better than something else. We all have different purpose being created and have different functions, so stop being such an ass please.
