He was kinda like St:Ansgar who Christinized Scandinavia. A Prayer. Wonderful God of justice and hope, bend down to hear my plea for help. Before you my life is transparent, guide my steps along your paths. You reveal yourself in ways great and small, as you show me your wonderful love. When the harsh winds of adversity howl about me, hide me in the shelter of your wings. Great lover of my soul, protect and nourish me, And keep me as the apple of your eye. I make this prayer in the name of the triune God. Amen. Source: “The Psalms, Human Voices of Prayer and Suffering” by Sr. Carmel McCarthy. Feb 28 - St Oswald (912-992) English monk & bishop Summary of St Oswald? There are two saints called Oswald in England: one was a king, the other a monk. The king?lived in the 7th century in Northumbria:?he brought St Aidan to Lindisfarne and his feast is on 5th August. The other was a monk, of danish origin,?lived in the?10th century?and became bishop of Worcester, and later archbishop of York; his feast is on 28th February. It is about the latter that Patrick Duffy writes here. A? monk of Danish family ?Oswald,? Bishop of Worcester, was of a Danish family and was brought up by his uncle Oda, who sent him to the Benedictine abbey of Fleury-sur-Loire to become a monk. When?Oswald returned to England as a priest in 958/9, he worked for another?Danish patron, Oskytel,?who had recently become?archbishop of York.?His activity for Oskytel attracted the notice of Saint Dunstan, then bishop of Worcester and in the process of moving to become archbishop of Canterbury. Dunstan persuaded King Edgar?to appoint Oswald?bishop of Worcester in his place in 961. Founding monasteries Oswald founded a number of monasteries at Westbury-on-Trym (near Bristol),?at Ramsey (in Cambridgeshire) in collaboration?with Ethelwold, bishop of Winchester and Pershore and Evesham (in Worcestershire).?He also succeeded in gradually changing the cathedral chapter in Worcester from priests to monks, supposedly because the clergy would not give up their wives. Archbishop of York In 972?Oswald became archbishop of York, and was able to bring the Abbot and other monks of Fleury to York to teach for a number of years. Death and memory But Oswald also held on to the diocese of Worcester, presiding over both dioceses. And it was at Worcester that on 29th February 992 he died,?while he was washing the feet of the poor, a practice that had become his daily custom during Lent. He was buried in the Church of St?Mary at Worcester.?His feast is celebrated on 28th February. He is closely associated with other monks who became bishops -?like St Dunstan (909-988) and St Ethelwold (908-984) - in restoring monasticism?in England. English Gaelige Liturgical Readings for: Friday, 28th February, 2020 FIRST READING A reading from the prophet Isaiah? ? ? ? ? ? ? 58: 1-9 Is not this the sort of fast that pleases me? T hus says the Lord: Shout for all you are worth, raise your voice like a trumpet. Proclaim their faults to my people, their sins to the House of Jacob. They seek me day after day, they long to know my ways, like a nation that wants to act with integrity and not ignore the law of its God. They ask me for laws that are just, they long for God to draw near: 'Why should we fast if you never see it, why do penance if you never notice? ' Look, you do business on your fastdays, you oppress all your workmen; look, you quarrel and squabble when you fast and strike the poor man with your fist. Fasting like yours today will never make your voice heard on high. Is that the sort of fast that pleases me, a truly penitential day for men? Hanging your head like a reed, lying down on sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call fasting, a day acceptable to the Lord? Is not this the sort of fast that pleases me ? it is the Lord who speaks ? to break unjust fetters and undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and break every yoke, to share your bread with the hungry, and shelter the homeless poor, to clothe the man you see to be naked and not turn from your own kin? Then will your light shine like the dawn and your wound be quickly healed over. Your integrity will go before you and the glory of the Lord behind you. Cry, and the Lord will answer; call, and he will say, 'I am here'. The Word of the Lord. Responsorial Psalm ? ? ? ? ? ? ? GOSPEL A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?9: 14-15 When?the bridegroom is to be taken away from them, then they will fast. J ohn's disciples came to Jesus and said, 'Why is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not? ' Jesus replied, 'Surely the bridegroom's attendants would never think of mourning as long as the bridegroom is still with them? ?But the time will come for the bridegroom to be taken away from them, and then they will fast. ' The Gospel of the Lord. *************************** Gospel Reflection ? ? ? ? ? Friday after Ash Wednesday? ? ? ?Matthew 9:14-15 In today’s gospel reading, Jesus affirms the value of the Jewish practice of fasting for his followers. ‘The time will come for the bridegroom to be taken away from them, and then they will fast’, he says. Jesus is looking ahead to the time after his death and resurrection. He declares that, beyond that time, fasting will be appropriate for his disciples, but not during his public ministry which is equivalent to the joy of a wedding feast. In today’s first reading, Isaiah declares that fasting must be in the service of just relationships with others. He speaks of a fast that breaks unjust fetters, that leads to sharing our bread with the hungry and sheltering the homeless poor. Fasting can seem like something negative, a saying ‘no’ to something that can be good in itself, but, the prophet reminds us that this ‘no’ is always in the service of a more generous ‘yes’ to the Lord and his people, especially his most vulnerable people. We deny ourselves so that others can live more fully. We have become more aware in recent times that we need to say ‘no’ to others, to fast, so that our natural environment can also live more fully. Pope Francis reminds us of our responsibility to our environment in his wonderful encyclical ‘Laudato Sii’. We deny ourselves not only for the sake of others but for the sake of our natural environment. The Pope expresses this bond we have with all of creation very beautifully in that encyclical, ‘Everything is related, and we human beings are united as brothers and sisters on a wonderful pilgrimage, woven together by the love God has for each of his creatures, and which also unites us in fond affection with brother sun, sister moon, brother river and mother earth’. I am patrick 3a the patron saint of ireland tiktok. I was living in LA at the time of his death and remember how I was at Pierce Brothers Westwood Memorial Park talking with a senior member of staff when a van pulled into the drive and park up. Another member of staff came up and discreetly pointed at the van and whispered 'Ma'am, Patrick is here. she explained that she had to attend to this matter and apologised for cutting out talk short. She then accompanied her colleague to the office and I overhead her ask if Lisa would be coming. I put two and two together and as I walked past touched the side of the van and cried.
