People giving 8 9 or even 10 stars to this movie either have money in it or are being payed to make this review to make the movie interesting so you will pay to see it. Mr. cage must really need money to put his name to this project and even worse he is acting so so pore that my kids did better at school play in middle class. The director was fired from a job some year go, now I know why. He should find another occupation. seriously people who rate this high, must just have discovered the phenomenon called movie for the first time. WOW blows, bring back Warcraft RTS! Warcraft 4. Lovecraft : “Mysterious color like nothing seen on earth “ This film: IT'S PINK There are at least a dozen of novels from Lovecraft that would make really good films, so WHY oh why did you do a film about one that's about something that cannot be described ? Wich means that you REALLY can't do a film about.
THIS & ”Antlers” am i most excited for this year, so far. Adapting H.P Lovecraft stories both long and short has never proven too be an easy task for filmmakers, with many unable to conjure up the same mystic, horror and intrigue that the famed horror author managed to do with the written word.
Proving once more that this is indeed the case is director Richard Stanley, who returns to narrative film-making for this first time in over 20 years after his attempt to bring The Island of Dr. Moreau to the big screen saw him fired mid-project, in a colorful and bizarre exercise in turning Lovecraft's short story of the same name into a Nicolas Cage starring horror. Now I must admit, I must put my hand up and fully embrace the fact that I don't see how on earth Color Out of Space has been met with a rather positive critical response, as Stanley's boring, unlikable and cheapo effort see's the goodness of Lovecraft washed away in an extended run-time that loses sight of what could've made it great very early on. Built around a Cage performance as Llama loving father Nathan Gardner that never gets the crazy eyed wonder into full Cage-Mode, Space really does take its time to get going as the Gardner family find their secluded farm living life interrupted by a pink meteorite, strange cooking mishaps, Tommy Chong cameos and of all things Llama milking, as Stanley looks to cover up a low-budget with tension building and a rainbow tinted palette that fails to get the recipe for a good time into a solid package. There's brief snippets of a great film here, some visceral violence and some nasty looking creature practical effects will please genre hounds but all the creative aspects of the film mean little with a daft script, boring performances and a forgettable ending all holding things back. Stanley has spoken already of his desire to return to the world of Lovecraft once more but on the back of this effort you suspect he has his work cut out for him, as a film with this crazy of an idea and with the industries most unhinged leading man front and centre too still feel like a chore to sit through makes you wonder what type of luck he will have in future endeavors in an attempt to give us all a truly great Lovecraft feature. Final Say - Don't believe the hype, Color Out of Space may live up to its title in a visual sense but most elements of this student quality affair fail to do much good as wasted potential goes begging throughout. 1 hobby Llama out of 5.
This is the kind of movie you have to watch on the big screen to have the full Cage/Lovecraft experience, it has a stunning cinematography, amazing soundtrack, crazy cage and cosmic horror.

Magenta is back and this time its pissed. A ME NON PIACE. So this is national treasure 3. Instant subscription. Posted on Monday, September 9th, 2019 by One thought kept running through my head as I watched Color Out of Space: “What the fuck is this? ” It’s become almost a cliche at this point to highlight how “weird” and “bonkers” the latest Nicolas Cage movie is. But even those well-versed in the art of Cage’s self-titled?Nouveau Shamanic acting style won’t be prepared for what’s in store with Richard Stanley ‘s adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft’s story. The prospect of Cage uniting with such a fascinating director as Stanely ? whose career hit a major roadblock after the disaster of shooting The Island of Doctor Moreau ? is too intriguing to pass up. But is the end result actually worthwhile? Or just so damn weird that it has to be seen to be believed? Nathan (Cage) and Theresa Gardner ( Joely Richardson) are living a seemingly idyllic farm life in rural New England, raising alpacas and ignoring the outside world. The family has gone through a recent trauma in the form of Theresa’s breast cancer, but the family ? which also includes Wiccan teen daughter Lavinia ( Madeleine Arthur), stoner teen son Benny ( Brendan Meyer), and young child Jack ( Julian Hilliard) ? seem to be in a good place for the time being. That won’t last, though. Because one night, a meteorite crashes onto the Gardner farm, unleashing a wave of madness and what-the-fuckery designed to drive both the family ? and the film’s audience ? out of their minds. Calling Color Out of Space weird seems like an affront to weirdness. This movie transcends the weird, dipping into territory that I don’t think they’ve invented words for yet. Part of that has to do with the schizophrenic tone at play. Stanley has conjured up some truly nightmarish imagery, most of it involving body horror that turns people into mutated spider-like abominations. But the film also apparently wants to be some sort of gonzo comedy, and that never quite coalesces with the horror. The comedy comes almost entirely from Cage, who appears to be acting in a completely different movie than everyone else. As the meteorite unleashes all sorts of alien toxicity into the air and slowly drives the family insane, it’s Cage’s Nathan who goes the craziest, which means we get to watch scene after scene of Cage screaming about alpacas, peaches, his father, hospitals, bad smells, and more. The crazier his character gets, the more out-there Cage becomes, often using the same goofy voice he employed as the yuppie bloodsucker in Vampire’s Kiss. Make no mistake: watching Cage lose his shit is an absolute blast, and it’s nearly impossible not to burst into laughter as the actor goes off. The problem is that Cage’s work is so far removed from everything and everyone else in the movie that you start to resent any scene that doesn’t focus on him. It doesn’t help that the rest of the cast is alarmingly lackluster. Richardson does well with a somewhat undercooked part, but the remaining actors are oddly limp, delivering their lines as if they just learned them a second ago. Madeleine Arthur, in particular, is distractingly bland as Cage and Richardson’s witchy daughter. Sadly, she becomes the default main character, and it becomes quite difficult to care much about her actions. Stanley may not be able to squeeze great performances from his cast, but he is able to conjure up plenty of distressing imagery, loading Color up with visual effects that are sometimes clunky (a CGI cat is particularly bad), and sometimes absolutely terrifying (a moment when two characters have their bodies fused together and are reduced to a writhing mass of wet, fish-white flesh is guaranteed to give you the heebie-jeebies).?Director of Photography Steve Annis shoots all of this with ominous stylishness, making great use of strange, alien-like colors that continually saturate the screen. The creepy score, courtesy of Colin Stetson, is both droning and operatic ? and loud. Noise plays a huge part in the film, with Stanley and his crew ratcheting up the sound to extreme levels, so much so that you can feel the teeth in your mouth starting to vibrate. There’s also a constant whistling sound ringing out in nearly every scene ? a choice that grows tedious and even painful after awhile. All of this works to create a sensory overload, resulting in a film that drains you emotionally and mentally. As things grow more dire and mad for the Gardners, don’t be surprised if you find your eyes starting to water and your head starting to pound. It’s not an altogether pleasant experience, but it’s probably the exact sort of nightmarish, unquantifiable situation that would make H. Lovecraft proud. /Film Rating: 6. 5 out of 10 Cool Posts From Around the Web:.

The star here is the cinematography, atmosphere, and special effects. Some scenes are simply breathtaking. The plot and the characters were more frustrating. It started out sincere and filled with so much possibility. However, there were frustrating moments where characters said/did unbelievable things. And the end is jumbled but spectacular at the same time. Cage was more uneven than usual here. Some of his choices are so jarring. There are a couple scenes in particular in which he channels his inner Donald Trump... and while it's funny... it's also distracting and takes you out of the movie.

For the eponymous character, see Colour Out of Space " The Colour Out of Space " is a short story written by American horror author H. P. Lovecraft in March 1927. In the tale, an unnamed narrator pieces together the story of an area known by the locals as the "blasted heath" in the wild hills west of Arkham, Massachusetts. The narrator discovers that many years ago a meteorite crashed there, draining the life force from anything living nearby; vegetation grows large, but tasteless, animals are driven mad and deformed into grotesque shapes, and the people go insane or die one by one. Lovecraft began writing "The Color Out of Space" immediately after finishing his previous short novel, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, and in the midst of final revision on his horror fiction essay " Supernatural Horror in Literature ". Seeking to create a form of life that was truly alien, he drew his inspiration from numerous fiction and nonfiction sources. First appearing in the September 1927 edition of Hugo Gernsback 's science fiction magazine Amazing Stories, "The Color Out of Space" became one of Lovecraft's most popular works and remained his personal favorite short story. It was adapted into feature film versions in 1965, 1987, and 2020. Synopsis Edit Written in the first-person perspective of an unnamed surveyor from Boston, "The Color Out of Space" tells the story of the narrator's attempts to uncover the secrets behind a shunned place referred to by the locals of Arkham as the "blasted heath". [1] Unable to garner any information from the townspeople, the protagonist seeks out an old and allegedly crazy man by the name of Ammi Pierce who relates his personal experiences with a farmer who used to live on the cursed property, Nahum Gardner. Pierce claims that the troubles began when a meteorite crashed into Gardner's lands in June 1882. [2] The meteorite never cools, but begins shrinking and local scientists are unable to discern its origins. As the stone shrinks, it leaves behind globules of color that are referred to as such "only by analogy", [3] as they do not fall within the range of anything known in the visible spectrum. These remains eventually disappear but, the following season, Gardner's crops come in unnaturally large and abundantly. When he discovers that, despite their appearance, they are inedible, he accuses the meteorite of having poisoned the soil. Over the following year, the problem begins spreading to the surrounding vegetation and local animals, warping them in unusual ways. The plant life around the farmhouse becomes "slightly luminous in the dark", [4] and Gardner's wife eventually goes mad, forcing him to lock her in the attic. During this time, Gardner begins to isolate his family from the rest of the town and Pierce slowly becomes his only contact with the outside world. [2] Soon after Gardner's wife becomes mad, the vegetation begins eroding into a gray powder and the water from the well becomes tainted. One of Gardner's sons, Thaddeus, goes insane like his mother and is similarly locked in a different room in the attic. The livestock begins turning gray and dying and, like the crops, their meat is tasteless and inedible. Thaddeus eventually dies and Merwin, another of Gardner's sons, goes missing during an excursion to retrieve water from the well. After two weeks of silence from Gardner, Pierce visits the farmstead and witnesses the tale's eponymous horror for the first time in the attic. Gardner's final son, Zenas, has disappeared and the "color" has infected Nahum's wife, whom Pierce puts out of her misery. He then flees the decaying house as the horror destroys the last surviving resident, Nahum. [2] Pierce returns to the farmstead shortly after with six other men, including a doctor, who begin examining Nahum's remains. They discover Merwin and Zenas' eroding skeletons at the bottom of the well, as well as remnants of several other creatures. As they reflect upon their discoveries in the house, a light begins to emit from the well that eventually transforms into the "color" and begins pouring out, spreading over everything nearby. The men flee the house just as the horror blights the land and then shoots toward the sky. Pierce alone turns back after the "color" has gone and witnesses a small part of it try to follow the rest, only to fail and return to the well. The knowledge that part of the alien still resides on earth is sufficient to alter his mental state. When some of the men return the following day, there is nothing remaining but a dead horse and acres of gray dust, and the surrounding area is quickly abandoned by all of its remaining residents. [2] Background Edit Lovecraft began writing "The Color Out of Space" in March 1927, immediately after completing The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. [5] As he wrote the tale, however, he was also typing the final draft of his horror fiction essay Supernatural Horror in Literature. [6] Although the author himself claimed that his inspiration was the newly constructed Scituate Reservoir in Rhode Island, Lovecraft scholar S. T. Joshi believes that the planned Quabbin Reservoir in Massachusetts must have influenced him as well. American writer and pulp fiction enthusiast Will Murray cites paranormal investigator Charles Fort, and the "thunderstones" (lightning-drawing rocks that may have fallen from the sky) he describes in The Book of the Damned, as possible inspirations for the behavior of the meteorite. [7] Lovecraft was dismayed at the all-too human depiction of "aliens" in other works of fiction, and his goal for "Color" was to create an entity that was truly alien. [8] In doing so, he drew inspiration from a number of sources describing colors outside of the visible spectrum. Most notably, Joshi points to Hugh Elliott's Modern Science and Materialism, a 1919 nonfiction book that mentions the "extremely limited" senses of humans, such that of the many "aethereal waves" striking the eyes, "the majority cannot be perceived by the retina at all". [9] This concept had previously been used in Lovecraft's 1920 short story " From Beyond ". [9] Completed by the end of March, "The Color Out of Space" was first published in Hugo Gernsback 's science fiction magazine Amazing Stories in September 1927. ( EXP: An H. Lovecraft Encyclopedia) The fact that the Miskatonic researches found a new color can be seen as acquainted to the impossible color phenomenom. The effects on the environment of the meteor can also be linked to the ones of a nuclear weapon even though they were written some years before such creations. Reception and legacy Edit "The Color Out of Space" became the only work from Amazing Stories to make Edward O'Brien 's anthology of The Best American Short Stories, [10] appearing in the 1928 "Roll of Honor". [6] Gernsback paid Lovecraft only $25 [2] (approximately $350 in present day terms) and was late in doing so, leading Lovecraft to refer to the publisher as "Hugo the Rat". [10] He never again submitted anything to the publication. Lovecraft Encyclopedia) Lovecraft did not write another major short story until the following year, when he crafted " The Dunwich Horror ", although he did pen " History of the Necronomicon " and " Ibid " as minor works in-between, [8] as well as an account of a Halloween night's dream that he called " The Very Old Folk ". [6] In addition to its being his personal favourite of all of his short stories, [8] [11] critics have considered "The Color Out of Space" to be one of Lovecraft's best works, as well as the first to establish his trademark blending of science fiction and horror. Lovecraft Encyclopedia) Lovecraft scholar Donald R. Burleson referred to the tale as "one of his stylistically and conceptually finest short stories". [12] Joshi praises the work as one of Lovecraft's best and most frightening, particularly for the vagueness of the description of the story's eponymous horror. He also lauded the work as Lovecraft's most successful attempt to create something entirely outside of the human experience, as the creature's motive (if any) is unknown and it is impossible to discern whether or not the "color" is emotional, moral, or even conscious. [8] His only criticism is that it is "just a little too long". [13] The text of "The Color Out of Space", like many of Lovecraft's works, has fallen into public domain and can be accessed in several compilations of the author's work as well as on the Internet. [2] It also had a strong influence on Brian Aldiss 's "The Saliva Tree", which has been seen as a rewriting of Lovecraft's tale. [14] In 1984, the novel The Color Out of Time by Michael Shea was published as a sequel to the original novelette. [15] Film adaptations Edit The 1965 film Die, Monster, Die!, directed by Daniel Haller, is based on "The Color Out of Space". Nick Adams plays a scientist by the name of Stephen Reinhart who travels to England to visit his fiancee (played by Suzan Farmer) at the home of her parents Nahum (Boris Karloff) and Letitia (Freda Jackson). There he discovers that Nahum is keeping a space rock in his basement and using it to grow giant vegetation and mutated animals. The rock has driven Nahum and Letitia insane and, in the film's climax, it transforms Nahum into a glowing monster. Lovecraft scholar Don G. Smith claims that, of the scenes that are derived from Lovecraft's work, the "blasted heath doesn't live up to Lovecraft's description" [16] [17] and asserts that overall the film does not successfully capture Lovecraft's intent to "play... with the idea of an alien life

Lovecraft. It stars Nicolas Cage, Joely Richardson, Madeleine Arthur, Q'orianka Kilcher and Tommy Chong. This is Stanley's first feature film directed since his firing from The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996). [9] According to Stanley, it is the first film in a trilogy of Lovecraft adaptations, which he hopes to follow up with an adaptation of The Dunwich Horror. [10] Plot [ edit] In the wake of his wife Theresa's mastectomy, Nathan Gardner moves his family to a rural farm where he attempts to grow tomatoes and raise alpacas for their milk. His daughter, Lavinia, takes up Wicca and performs rituals in hopes of restoring her mother's health. One of these rituals is interrupted by the arrival of Ward, a hydrologist, surveying the water table in planning for a hydroelectric dam. The family is strained by the move - Theresa, a financial adviser, is losing clients because she cannot get a reliable internet signal in their remote location; Nathan feels neglected because they have not had sex since her surgery six months ago and the rest of his family does not take his attempts at farming seriously; his son Benny hangs around with Ezra, a local hermit, and has started smoking pot; his youngest son Jack is withdrawn and only interacts with their family dog, Sam. One night, Nathan convinces Theresa that despite her feelings of mutilation she is still attractive, and they begin to have sex, but they are interrupted when a brilliantly glowing meteor crash lands in their front yard. The rock emits an unearthly Color which distorts the world around it and causes Nathan to detect a horrific smell. The next morning, the meteor is no longer glowing and is crumbling to dust. Ward, along with the mayor and the sheriff of the nearby town of Arkham arrive to see it. Later, Nathan and Lavinia witness the meteor being struck by several bolts of lightning. Ward notices that the groundwater has taken on an oily sheen and tests it. When his test strips begin to glow brightly with the Color, he advises the Gardners not to drink it, but he cannot persuade the mayor to do anything since she does not want to scare off the dam developers. Jack becomes obsessed with a well which stands a few feet from where the meteor landed. Strange, brightly colored vegetation begins growing around it, mutated insects fly out of it, and Jack insists he can hear a man in there. Ward visits Ezra, who plays a tape recording for him of what he says are people moving around underground. A news crew arrives to interview Nathan about the meteor, but it has mysteriously vanished and Nathan comes off looking like a drunken fool. Later, while Theresa is preparing dinner, she absentmindedly cuts off two of her fingers. While Nathan rushes her to the hospital, he leaves Benny in charge, but things quickly get out of hand as Benny finds the alpacas uncontrollable, Sam runs away and Jack is traumatized by something he saw in the well. Nathan excoriates Benny and Lavinia, lashing out with uncharacteristic rage. He tries to take a shower but is interrupted when a squid-like creature emerges from the drain. The next day, after Nathan tries to harvest his tomatoes - which have all turned out misshapen and inedible - he and Theresa get into a fight when the internet goes out again and she loses a client. The next night, Theresa hears Jack and Benny screaming in the barn and rushes to their aid. To their horror, something awful has happened to the alpacas, and they try to flee the barn only to be struck by several bolts of Color lightning which fuses Theresa and Jack together into a single, deranged mass. Unable to start the car or call for help as all electronic devices have started malfunctioning, Nathan and the other children carry the monster into the attic where they struggle to decide what to do about the miserable, gibbering thing. Nathan, enraged at what the Color has done to his family, gets a shotgun and enters the barn, where he finds all of his alpacas fused together, and he destroys the resulting creature. He returns to the attic, orders his children to leave, and prepares to put down his mutated wife and son, but he cannot go through with it. Lavinia tries to perform a Wiccan ceremony to save her family, mutilating herself in the process. She and Benny conspire to run away from the farm, but as they are preparing to leave, Benny hears Sam whining down in the well and insists on going down after him. The Color bursts from the water and kills him, driving Lavinia insane. Losing his grip on sanity, Nathan locks Lavinia in the attic with the monster, which has now grown aggressive and attacks her. Ward and the sheriff arrive and break into the attic, and Nathan kills the creature. As they exit the house, the Color erupts out of the well and drives Nathan insane. He tries to shoot the Color, but the sheriff mistakes Nathan's aim for Ward and shoots Nathan, who dies in Lavinia's arms. Lavinia declares she will not leave. Still intent on leaving, Ward and the sheriff go to pick up Ezra, but only find his dessicated corpse and a recording he left behind, where he surmises that the Color is attempting to remake Earth into "something it knows. " The corpse implodes, raining Color down everywhere, and a tree comes to life and kills the sheriff while Ward flees. Ward arrives and attempts to rescue Lavinia, but the Color explodes from the well and roars into the sky in a towering funnel. Lavinia touches him and shares with him her vision of where the Color hails from ? a horrific sector of outer space inhabited by repulsive, tentacled alien entities similar to itself ? and as he is traumatized, she dissolves into dust from her corruption. Attempting to save himself, Ward hides in the farmhouse, where space and time begin to unravel around him as he is confronted by jumbled visions of the Gardner family, and attacked by a murderous apparition of Nathan speaking in all of the family's voices, and narrowly hides in the wine cellar as the Color vanishes into the sky, tearing down the house and leaving the surrounding farmland a "blasted heath", covered in ash and drained of all color and life except for Ward himself. In an epilogue, a traumatized Ward stands on top of the finished dam, and says that knowing what he knows about this place, he will never drink its water, and affirming his fear that more beings like the Color may find their way to Earth as well. Cast [ edit] Nicolas Cage as Nathan Gardner Joely Richardson as Theresa Gardner Madeleine Arthur as Lavinia Gardner Brendan Meyer as Benny Gardner Julian Hilliard as Jack Gardner Elliot Knight as Ward Phillips Q'orianka Kilcher as Mayor Tooma Tommy Chong as Ezra Josh C.
