I just now noticed that it seems like the IMDb is creating a new format for reviews and I personally don't care for it, but I will keep writing reviews anyway. So this movie features three homeless people who find an infant and try to find her parents. That's really all there is and all there needs to be. The weirdest thing is that I heard that Japan is actually the least religious country on Earth. Well, maybe not the least but two thirds of its population are not religious.

It's not like this doesn't contain any references to the baby Jesus. It explicitly mentions him at the beginning of the story through a play. I think it's great that such a secular country can look into the religious themes of a holiday. I thought Christmas in Japan had something to do with KFC. Did I miss that in this movie? I am glad the movie was rated PG-13. There was a scene where a woman was breast feeding two babies at once. Another breastfeeding scene appeared later. You'd think with any bare breasts that much, a movie would be rated R. I'm glad the MPAA understood that breastfeeding is something perfectly natural. What's so beautiful about this film is the gorgeous animation. I think this might be the most realistic anime film I've ever seen. It may also be the only one that wasn't based on a manga or directed by Miyazaki. It's great that other artists are learning to create anime masterpieces.

The freaky thing about it though is that there WAS a dub by Animax. It was aired on TV quite a while ago, but for some reason it was never released. I remember watching it late at night on TV too, and it drives me FUCKING NUTS that I can't find evidence of it.

That being said, it would be remiss of me not to critique your characterization of Hana from an LGBT lens. For 2003 Japan Tokyo Godfathers is a remarkably progressive film for the time and place (as well as one of my favorite films) and a large part of that is in its representation of Hana as a transwoman. She's fun, funny and probably the most likeable character in the film. That being said, the film isn't perfect by any means and still carries a lot of regressive and misunderstood Japanese views on the gay and trans communities, though I think Satoshi Kon still did his best. Which is why it was honestly sort of painful every time you misgendered Hana. I'm sure the frankly transmisogynistic subs didn't help with that very much. I'm not the essayist here so I'll just keep this short. I liked your Iron Ladies video so I know you're sympathetic to LGBT otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. Hana isn't just an ex-drag queen, Hana is trans, that's it. Thanks. See you next year.

I think you should see Santa Company, the 2014 anime with a crowd funded budget and a run time of 30 mins. It's completely about Christmas and is a okay watch imo but don't except to much from it. I did not know this existed and I'm kinda excited to hunt for it. In my opinion, while I share my admiration for Shinkai moving from doing low budget to gigantic budget but I think I hate his work the most among the animation movie. He has a lot of passion but I can't help but feel his works are lazy. He recycles his theme, pushing the love theme everywhere. His endless flexing of desktop background art after 6 movies made everything meshed together. I can't find any of them memorable, something worth talking about. I do like that you pointed out Hoshi o Ou Kodomo, because that is something I would like to see more often from Shinkai. Out of ordinary, fantastic. I don't think he's a bad artist, I just want him with his big boy, leader of the industry to use his budget for something experimental, daring, maddening. Animation could do things unimaginable on the silver screen. Satoshi's Paprika is the type of visual experience that only animation can deliver. Hosoda, while generally producing similar works to Shinkai, has a knack for animating movements, very Ghibli-esque. Shinkai do have this magic that I'm unfortunately immune to. His works are, to me, inexplicably relate-able. You can see the rating of Kimi no na wa on MAL, it's either 9 or above or 5 and below. Middle ground is rare. It's crazy.
Its thanks to these people I feel a lot better. Hands down one of the best anime movies ever made. It's like a beautiful fever dream where you yearn for more even though it is truly terrifying. The head trip done to perfection. So good.

If ever there was the death of a person unrelated to me that affected me deeply, it would be my realisation of the death of Satoshi Kon. It was many years after his death, where I would watch the movie Paprika and Tokyo Godfather's. These two unique movies shared an experience that I can never forget. I knew instantly after watching both of these movies, I had to look up who the director was and the other staff involved. Upon looking up the people involved in the creation of these two movies, I found out about Satoshi Kon's death by Cancer. I had a sudden urge to cry over the death of a person who before that point I had never even heard about, but through his movie's would learn that he was a remarkably gifted person with an absolutely one of a kind mind. Even to this day, when I hear the music from Paprika. I start to become emotional over the fact that there will never be the release of another great movie by this man. May you Rest in Peace Satoshi Kon.
