abstract Jerry Mulligan is an ex-serviceman who stayed on in Paris after the war. He's now a struggling artist trying to sell his paintings on the sidewalk. He's had little luck until the rich Milo Roberts sees him. She offers to help him with his career but is clearly more interested in Jerry than his work. She rents a studio for him and plans his first exhibition. For his part, Jerry falls for a lovely young French woman he sees in a nightclub, Lise Bouvier. She however is being pursued by Jerry's friend, entertainer Henri Baurel. When Baurel gets the opportunity to tour in the US, he wants Lise to marry him so they can go together. She is in love with Jerry but feels she can't abandon Henri who saved her during the war. She has only a short time to decide

My grandmother, now passed away, would always tell me the greatest honor he had was to dance with Gene Kelly during this scene in An American in Paris that we had in VHS. My mother told me she was 6 years when they shot this scene. He was really nervous because he though he wasnt good enough. But as he started talking to the other dancers he noticed that everyone was nervous about it too, so he finally did it. He was 29, so young. Now hes long gone and Im 40. Im proud of him.

I just listened ajhsajhsajhs trough the whole video? no offense your native language is amazing. Somebody actually gave this a "one" for a rating. A movie with incredible dancing, the music of Gershwin, the premier of Leslie Caron, and some of the most interesting graphic stuff for its time. I always preferred the dancing of Fred Astaire to that of Gene Kelley, but that's no indictment of him. I do admit he is a bit stiff as an actor, but this movie is a way of providing us with a visual presentation of Gershwin's amazing music. Like so many of the musicals of its time, it is short on plot. The characters are contrived and put there to sing and dance. Still, put that aside and enjoy the moment. Take a look at the musical choices. The Gershwins are the American masters. If all that was written was "Rhapsody in Blue" it would George immortal.
The story is surprisingly intense and actually eclipses the dancing sequences which are impressive. As much as the movies's plot may seem hokey and contrived, it really isn't. The story is plausible; people can fall in love immediately and get swept up in their emotions. Gene Kelly gives a great performance as an expatriate American and Leslie Caron proves to be dynamic in her role. The final dance sequence is incredible, combining several different dance forms. What makes this movie even stronger is that the story is simple, the characters likable and the music outstanding. The dream sequence with Oscar Levant was brilliant. There is nothing wrong with an upbeat movie featuring wonderfully talented actors who actually entertain. They sing, they dance, there is music and a happy ending. What's wrong with that? Nothing. This movie deserved the honors it received. Street Car and A Place in the Sun were marvelous movies, but a quality musical will trump a bleak, black-and-white drama anytime, like it did in 1951. Who would an audience rather watch: Gene Kelly laughing and dancing with Leslie Caron to the music of George Gershwin or gloomy Montgomery Clift plotting to kill a hapless Shelly Winters.

I just finished playing this piece throughout separate that consisted of about 10 performances of this piece, the last being in the Iowa All-State Orchestra, airing on Iowa Public Television. I;ve watched this many, many times and I am always picking up new bits. at 38-40 when Kelly encounters Toulouse Lautrec sitting at the gives him a little wave, just before the wave as Lautrec comes into frame, he turns his head to face Kelly. I wonder why he was looking away to begin with when everyone else is completely still. Also, the gentleman on the far left at 1.15-1.17 moves slightly back so he remains fully in shot and isn't masked by his female companion's hat. incredible detailing. And ALL those characters are in various Lautrec paintings, Jane Avril, the yellow haired woman with her legs apart, red headed woman in green dress with black stripes on the bodice, the man with the red scarf, blue suited man with blond hair AND that incredibly lit woman bottom left around 1.20 in. I'd love to see her makeup without the lighting. A brilliant mix of makeup and lighting to get the same effect Lautrec painted her in. Apart from Kelly, his brilliant choreography and performance, the art direction, costuming and lighting are absolute perfection. And the scenic painters copies of all those Lautrec characters at the start of this clip before the live characters come in. Genius.

Seems incomplete with either of the Scarecrow's dances, either from Wizard of Oz or The Wiz. maybe those aren't dance movies.
