Directed by - Corneliu Porumboiu / 2019 / Not everything is as it seems for Cristi, a policeman who plays both sides of the law. Embarking with the beautiful Gilda on a high-stakes heist, both will have to navigate the twists and turns of corruption, treachery and deception / Comedy / rating - 1541 vote / country - France. La Gomera a.k.a. "The Whistlers" is a fun Romanian neo-noir borrowing suspense tropes from James Cain, Robert Siodmak and Jules Dassin. The premise is a cop (no unreliable voice overs here) who had to learn the idiom of the whistling language for communicating with people living in interstitial spaces inside and outside of the law. Offbeat, at times hilarious in a deadpan way and rife with truly beautiful mise en scène, the film is a deconstructed tribute to this specific and particular film genre but operates outside of it. All the characters are vividly drawn, the supporting ones carry out the one-dimensionality of their roles with a certain lived-in freshness. The use of music was also very tasteful and deliberately operatic as counterpoint to the life-and-death situations, quirkily told. Corneliu Porumboiu seems to be having fun directing this story. it shows and I for one was swept by the story and storytelling.

Marzą mi się kanary ?. Hi! I'm from the island of El Hierro, Canary Islands. I watch your series since episode 1 and i like it very much. I especially enjoy your video shooting and when you speak about what sailing/cruising there is like. I'm grateful you have taken your time to talk about acceleration zones and navigation. For a feedback, comments on pilotage and marinas would be appreciated. Excellent job, guys. Thank you and fair winds. Muy bonito y bien aprovechado el viaje. Un saludo. ZvizdaÄ?i n. Tl;dr: went hiking on the Canary Islands, specifically tested out a couple’s sleeping setup. INTRO This January, I went hiking on 2 of the 7 Canary Islands with my boyfriend. We chose Tenerife because of its cheap international airport and its volcano, and La Gomera because it is the least touristic and most desolate island. There is a long distance trail that connects the 7 islands (GR 131), and another one (GR 132) that goes around La Gomera. Since we didn’t have a lot of vacation days, we were forced to do only little bits of both. Resupply is extremely easy on these trails, as they pass through a town almost every day. There are however no or very little fresh water sources, so we left our sawyer at home and each carried about 4 liters every time we encountered a village or a store. Wild camping is forbidden on the Canary Islands, but hiking would be almost impossible without it. There is only one established campground on La Gomera, which is nowhere near either long distance trail. We stealth camped, arriving at sunset and leaving at sunrise, and made no fires. It worked totally fine, but we went in the calm season. On Tenerife, there are tourist campgrounds as well as some basic ‘wild camping spots’ which you have to reserve. Even though we went in January, temperatures were very pleasant (I got a sock tan! ), around 20 °C (68 F) during the day and 16° C (61 F) at night. Only on mt. Teide we encountered freezing temps and harsh winds. THE TRIP DAY 1: travelling Tenerife South is incredibly cheap to fly to (for fellow Europeans at least). We immediately took a ferry to La Gomera. From San Sebastian de La Gomera we took the bus to Alajéro. You can start the trail in San Sebastian, but because we had limited time, we skipped to Alajéro where the more interesting section begins. DAY 2 to 5: 100 km (62 mi) The next four days we hiked the GR 132 along the coast to Vallehermoso, where we switched onto the GR 131 which goes through the middle of the island. We stealth camped all nights but one where we stayed on the one campground on La Gomera. Don’t be mistaken about our low mileage, the trail was really hard and required a very decent fitness level. We easily had to climb (and descend again! ) 1500 m (5000 ft) every day. DAY 6: travelling After arriving again in San Sebastian, we took the ferry back to Tenerife. We had reserved a place on one of these ‘wild camping spots’, right at the border of Teide national park. Only one bus per day passes there and we missed it, so we took a taxi. DAY 7: 22 km This day was the hardest of them all, where we had to hike into the national park, get up the steep trail to the top of the Teide volcano (the tallest mountain in Spain), and then some more km’s to a mountain hut. We didn’t dare to wild camp since it’s much more enforced in national parks, especially so close to the summit. DAY 8: 20 km Summiting Teide requires a permit, unless you do it outside of tourist hours. We decided to wake up early and reached the top by sunrise, which gave us ample time to scramble back down the other side of the mountain to El Portillo. From there we hitchhiked to Puerto de La Cruz, where we had rented an Airbnb. DAY 9: The rest of our trip was spent, as is tradition, eating and spa-ing. Pictures GEAR We both went on a lot of hiking and camping trips before, but only started to pay attention to weight about one year ago. After a lot of research about lighter gear (thanks, r/ultralight! ), we’ve recently spent our money on a tent, duo pad and duo quilt. This trip we specifically focused on testing out this sleeping setup. Other things like cooking system, clothing, toiletries and finally a pack, will be steadily upgraded as we go (so please don’t judge my lighterpack too harshly as it’s a work in progress). I’m not UL yet but by upgrading 2 of my big 3 and bringing less stuff in general, I went from a 13 kg (29 lbs) to a 7 kg (15 lbs) baseweight which is an enormous difference for me. Before we bought the duo pad, but I was beginning to think UL, I slept on a Z-rest ccf with my generic 0 °C (32 F) sleeping bag from Decathlon. We often zipped our bags together but then I would fall in between our pads, and it was actually colder because 2 bags have lots of empty space to heat up and a very drafty opening. Because we only ever hike together, we opted for a duo sleeping system. We now have an Exped Synmat HL Duo and an Enlightened Equipment 20 F Accomplice. PROS Sharing gear is awesome. This duo pad+quilt combination weighs less per person than most separate sleep systems would. The duo pad is my favorite piece of gear. It’s slightly wider than two separate pads. Really well insulated too. It makes some noise when moving around on it, but from what I’ve read it’s not at all as bad as the ThermaRest Chipsbag®. The material is so nice, it does not feel ‘plasticy’ but more like a fabric and sleeping bags do not slide much on it, which is a problem I had with other pads. Because the quilt is strapped on, we both stayed very neatly in the middle of the pad, where otherwise we would wake up multiple times to reposition ourselves. This is a feature of every quilt however and not just ours. We are hardcore cuddlers so this duo setup makes it feel much more like sleeping at home. On other trips we would grow wary of the tent towards the end but this time we weren’t even looking forward to a bed. The body warmth of another person is much more effective and comforting than extra down would have been in two separate quilts (and it weighs nothing! ). CONS I needed to get accustomed to the concept of a quilt. I’m not used to wearing clothes when sleeping, but I’m a little weirded out by laying directly onto the pad and these straps? I just slept in my base layers for now, maybe I’ll get more comfortable with that later. I’m a side sleeper and I feel like the baffles on top of my hips and shoulders needed a lot of manual repartitioning of the down. There were very often cold spots on my highest points. In hindsight we should’ve ordered the 10 F. We discovered way too late that EE was quite generous with its temperature ratings. The 20 F performed well on this trip, but we bought it for all future instances, many of which will be colder than this one. Even with this weather, there were times where I was somewhat cold and while it may have been a case of bad camp site selection, it makes me afraid for future trips. A week after receiving our quilt EE sent out the overstuffing-notice, so I was a bit bummed by that especially since it cost almost double for us because of the import fees. You don’t have your own little space anymore, and have to put up with a smelly partner stinking up your precious down. We were both gross however, and it didn’t bother me as much as I thought it would. RESOURCES Online resources on public transport, campsites,... are not very straightforward to find and often only in Spanish. I linked some useful things here so you won’t have to do this effort: GR 131, GR 132 and other trails on La Gomera Bus routes on La Gomera Trails in Teide national park Free wild camping spot reservation on Tenerife.
