We get out the buttered popcorn, and turn down the lights. We have watched the whole thing through probably 5 times. We have watched the first part only another 4 or 5 times probably. I remember really liking this movie when I was a child, and this is the only full-length movie my 5-year old will watch all the way through. I hope it rains some more, so we can watch it again. Story follows a former psychologist who fell out of love with treating people and fell in love with treating animals. He learns how to speak the language of individual animals from his pet parrot who speaks over 2, 000 different animal languages. The story follows him through his adventures in treating sick animals around the country of England, and eventually around the world. Very fun, and family friendly! Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2019 Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase Dr. Dolittle states at the end that he isn't very good with people, and prefers animals. In short he really can't deal with the real world, and so turns to animals for solace. Ergo he rejects the romantic inclinations of the lovely miss Fairfax. The rest of the movie regards a plot to free and try to help Dolittle escape the conventions of mid 19th century England, and eventually find a legendary creature. As a child, and this is a children's film in spite of the psychiatric framework, I found it entertaining on a child's level. That is I didn't understand he more adult or mature theme until a few days ago. Still, it has a certain charm, even for adults. And even though we're looking at the story of a psychiatric patient, Hollywood gives everyone a good ending, of sorts. The image is stunningly crystal clear. You can make out details in clothing, the landscape, and pretty much everything if you look for it. If you're into cinematography you'll find some very sumptuous shots of the English countryside. And the old 65mm stock really brings out the colors of the film. the movie, thanks to being scanned and remastered on bluray, has never looked so good. It is very crisp and clear and full of vibrant colors. I never read the original tale of Doctor Dolittle, but seem to recall a grammar school teacher reading it to the class. How close the film sticks with the source material I cannot say, but I do seem to recall that the black Africans were written as children in the original work, and the film makers go to some extra lengths to make the natives of Sea Star Island more sophisticated. There's new commentary for the bluray. I don't believe the DVD (which I own) came with any commentary. And there's a biopic on Rex Harrison himself, the star who plays Doctor Dolittle. I was hoping for a featurette or two on the making of the film, and how the production team managed to control or deal with all those animals, but none the such is offered. In this regard the bluray is somewhat scant in its extras. But, like I say, for all that, the film looks sterling. Give it a shot for some childhood nostalgia, or see it with the family, Otherwise there are more interesting films out there. Most certainly the director, Richard Fleischer did not like this movie. This palpable hostility ruins this film, and turns what ought to have been a romp into a tedious disaster. Perhaps, Hugh Lofting's books (racist as can be) cannot be filmed, certainly not with the sort of Hollywood gigantism that has ruined so many works of literature (LOTR anyone? ). I have trouble getting over the scene where Dr Doolittle is cooking bacon for breakfast, and pigs are going to eat it. Wow. But beyond that unfathomable moment, the film delights and the properties are so well made that even with cgi it would be difficult to improve the the wow factor of the Giant Pink Snail, the Lunar Moth, the Pushme-Pullyou. I love the scope of this adventure film, and the cast is great. Be sure to check the format before buying a DVD though. I bought the wrong format. While not unwatchable, this movie suffers from a lot of problems. It has a very oddly put together narrative structure and meanders quite a bit. I guess my cynicism was not misplaced. Good to know that if a friend invites me to go see Dolittle with them, I can just stay home and watch DuckTales and get the better version of the experience than they'll have.

Zoals Dolittle, de excentrieke dokter die met dieren kan praten en ze ook liever behandelt dan mensen. Mensen stellen je alleen maar teleur. In de nieuwe Dolittle -film, na versies met Rex Harrison (1967) en Eddie Murphy (1998 en 2001), maakt hij een uitzondering voor de jonge koningin Victoria. Zij ligt op sterven door vergiftiging en de enige manier om haar leven te redden is middels een zeldzaam medicijn waarvan de vindplaats lastig te bepalen is. Dolittle en zijn dieren moeten er een lange, gevaarlijke reis voor maken, achterna gezeten door een concurrent die als opdracht heeft hem uit te schakelen. Dit avontuur wordt voorafgegaan door een geanimeerde proloog waarin te zien is hoe Dolittle zijn geliefde verliest en zich vervolgens in rouw terugtrekt in zijn Dolittle Mansion. Als vertelling is Dolittle dus nogal overvol en zwaar, met zowel dieren als mensen die lijden, mismoedig zijn of jeugdtrauma’s hebben. Downey Jr. speelt Dolittle met een onnavolgbaar Schots accent. De film draait vooral om zijn helpers, overtuigend digitaal geanimeerde dieren als een bange gorilla, een assertieve papegaai, een wat levensmoede struisvogel en een ijsbeer die het altijd koud heeft. Ook neemt hij een jongen onder zijn hoede die per ongeluk een eekhoorn raakte tijdens de jacht ? gelukkig overleeft de eekhoorn het, al koestert hij in geestige terzijdes wrok tegen Dolittles latere leerling. Hoewel het doorsnee-avonturenverhaal weinig verrassingen kent, houdt de uitvoering ervan de aandacht net genoeg vast. De sympathie ligt bij de dieren, al is het te hopen dat kinderen thuis de hond geen bril opzetten zoals de hond in Dolittle. It is not something you have to watch but if you went to The movies this is a good choice. Dolittle ending. Lets be real here, we all thought Dolittle would flop. However i have seen it. It is magical and wonderful. Good for all the family. 9/10.
