In Zha'ilathal, Wakefield was welcomed by several members of the Playwright. He also discovered creatures that appeared to be made of shadows. As Wakefield gazed into the shadows, he witnessed the memories of Anthony, Hugo, and Devitt, who were among the first explorers to reach Zha'ilathal. By reviewing these memories, Wakefield learned a great deal about the history of Devitt and his friends. Alexandre had been eager to research the Veil, but Anthony had grown reluctant because of the suffering that the research had caused. Alexandre had?recruited Hugo to be the subject in Professor Wright's experiments. The experiments were successful, but after Hugo reached Zha'ilathal, he gazed into one of his own memories and was transformed. Devitt had been an active participant in the Playwright until an encounter with the Custodian had caused him to fall into a coma. When he woke up several years later, he had amnesia. A shadow creature in Zha'ilathal Wakefield eventually found a key to cross the Last Threshold. As he approached the threshold, he saw Alexandre waiting for him. Alexandre warned Wakefield that Devitt intended to close the threshold, which would ruin the work of the Playwright and imprison the occupants of Zha'ilathal. The manner in which the chapter ends depends on the player's choice. If Wakefield crosses the threshold, the remainder of the story is told from Devitt's point of view. Devitt returns to London, where he recalls that Wakefield met him in the Other World and closed the threshold after allowing Devitt to escape. If Wakefield does not cross the threshold, he returns to London, where he surmises that Devitt has closed the threshold. In both cases, the other occupants of Zha'ilathal are presumed to be imprisoned for all time. After the credit sequence, the player hears one of two audio-only epilogues, which are apparently chosen at random. In one epilogue, there is the sound of tapping on glass, a chair squeaking, a window opening, and the calls of a crow. In the other epilogue, the piano melody from Chapter 6 is audible. It is abruptly cut off and replaced with the sound of a large animal breathing and roaring. One possible interpretation of the second epilogue is that the protagonist (either Devitt or Wakefield) has confronted the creature below Wright Manor. With time, the Sealing Rite was held in order to seal Death behind Hell's Gate. At that time, two worlds, one near and one far, were born. Thus the history of life and death began. Half a year has passed since Suzaku's madness, and the underworld is still linked by a great portal. Kagami's great sin is still heard as if ringing from the heavens. Our world has been called upon. Legends of long ago told of the sealing of the boundary between the two worlds. The Sealing Rite would be necessary to hold back the spirits of that far away world. However, the Sealing Rite brings together the power of the Four Gods and Sealing Maiden, for the first time properly completing the ritual. To find the Sealing Maiden, Genbu began searching in the center of the world, from which all things begin. REVIEW: The first and only handheld version of SNK's The Last Blade is found on the Neo Geo Pocket Color. The graphics and overall art style are similar to those seen in Samurai Shodown! 2: Pocket for the Neo Geo Pocket Color, as characters are proudly represented in a charming super-deformed chibi style. The 2D sprites animate fairly well in this version, but of course, have far less frames than their insanely smooth NEOGEO versions in the original Last Blade and Last Blade 2. Yes... we must. The Last Blade is a much different game on the NGPC, and definitely feels watered down... quite a few characters from the main installments are unfortunately missing as well. Those who did make the cut, however, are represented quite well and retain many of their recognizable moves & mannerisms. For a Neo Geo Pocket Color game, the game's presentation is actually very well done. The Last Blade: Beyond The Destiny seems to push the NGPC to its graphical limitations (which isn't much, but fans of 2D sprites will appreciate the visuals and art style). The cool stage intros have returned, and there's some humorous dialogue between characters before fights as well. If cuteness could kill... The gameplay is definitely simpler and more streamlined than the deeper engine found in the original NeoGeo titles, but this "pocket" version of Last Blade is a respectable fighting game offering casual fun. Last Blade Pocket also has an impressive variety of modes for a portable fighting game, including: Story, Survival, Time Attack, Training, and even a few secret modes. As a stand alone fighting game, however, it does seem lacking (especially when compared to the epic Match of the Millenium). I remember pulling off some pretty cool combos in this game... and I have fun with it for a while. Through it all we witness the exchange between man and animal as horse, dog, bear, sheep and human play out a slow symbiotic struggle to be and do. I LOVE this game. It get a 9.5 imo, almost a perfect 10. A few flaws I can overlook. People: Star Wars is better! No, Star Trek is better!
