7,5 of 10 Star Release year 2019 1 H 54 Minute &ref(https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BYTIyYjc5MjEtNWUzOC00ZjY4LWI5OTctNWM4YjhkMmE4ZjdkXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMjMyMzI4MzY@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,629,1000_AL_.jpg) A look at the life and work of Jewish-Israeli lawyer Lea Tsemel who has represented political prisoners for nearly 50 years country Israel. See Dane before the cakes, Owen Wright before brain injury, Craig Anderson when he cared, Dusty Payne when he mattered etc… That golden period. All collaborative artists have em. Its only years later, upon reflection, that we can trawl through their work and call it. Kai Neville, the 36-year-old filmmaker has owned the performance surf film space since his 2010 debut Modern Collective. But for Kai, it was his second film, Lost Atlas, made the following year, that built his reputation into a profitable exercise (Red Bull used Kai for Jordy Smiths bio movie Bending Colours. Seven years later, its still his masterwork. It came at a time when he had John John Florence, Jordy Smith, Dusty Payne and Dane Reynolds in his pocket and more than eager to nail clips. Think: seven years ago Dane was 26, Owen, 21, Craig, 22 and Kolohe 17. And Dusty Payne? Who remembers when Duz was a 21-year-old kid on the rise? You want 10 reasons why Lost Atlas is still worth a little eyeball time? 1. Dusty Paynes late frontside switches to reverse in Mexico and Sumbawa are still the apex of the Hawaiians performance. Dusty had told Kai that if he was starting a move and it was feeling lame he could tweak it mid-turn into something special. I was with Dusty when Kai showed him the movie and recorded this exchange. Kai: He went up for an air, it was a big straight air, and he thought it was gay so he, you, turned it into a an air reverse. And, it looked sick! Dusty points at Kai, laughs and says, “He loved the move! ” Kai: It just, like, a last-minute tweak out on the flats. Its pretty cool. Dusty: It just happeeeeened. I just remember it was just standard. Kai laughs, “Yeah, standard…” Dusty: It was looking pretty stupid and I think it still does look stupid. 2. Dusty on girls surfing. On Lost Atlas Kai played pap-journalist and recorded conversations with his tiny H4 mic. And this quote from Dusty re: girls surfing is priceless in its honesty. Kai: Dusty, what do you think about girls surfing? Dusty: Dont get me started. Kai: Do they rip? Dusty: No, theyre terrible! In a sing-song voice) They think they should just sit on the boat and wait for it to get one foot again so they can go out and do their little tail slides. “Ok, let me explain, ” Dusty told me. “This is why I said it. I was just on a boat trip with some female surfers from the 6. 0 team and Im not saying any names…” Dusty pauses and laughs. “And, yknow, they were ripping when it was small. And, the last day of the trip, the last session of the trip, we pull up to Greenbushes (a barreling left) and it was three feet. And, we were like… YES! Finally, some waves! The trip was…ffffllllat! And, we go out and the only girl who paddled out was Laura Enever. And, she went. She got a couple of nuts ones and the rest of the girls sat on the boat and just watched. And, I was, like, are you kidding me? Its finally breaking and theyre not even paddling out? ” 3. Jordy Smith is refused permission to surf where there are fishermen because of “security. ” Jordy responds: “What about their security when I start baptizing a few heads? ” 4. Jordy Smith introduces new expression into surfers lexicon. Cringe. Again, with his little hidden mic, Kai Neville captures a candid exchange, this time between Dane Reynolds and Jordy Smith in France. Their quotes are run full-screen over the pair surfing perfect six-foot French beachbreaks. Jordy to Dane: You know that guy who interviewed me yesterday? He interviewed me two or three years ago in my hotel room and his breath just stunk… so bad… and I was just so off him and I said Im never doing anything with that guy ever again. And I saw him and I was eggy from the get go. Dane: I feel that if your breath is that bad to where someone is like three feet away and tripping out… It must feel disgusting right? Jordy: Thats my worst, like, cringe. Just cringe. 5. A genre-hopping soundtrack From Grimes to Hotel Mexico to Dead Gaze, King Tuff, Super Chillers, the Samps and Connan Mockasin (whom I personally loathe but he sure creates a mood. The result is a surf film that cuts to a variety of moods and speeds. 6. A Chilean beachbreak with Wade Goodall, Julian Wilson and Dusty Payne This is Wades last great cameo in the big leagues and he does it in the most immaculate fashion, in difficult waves, with tough competition, including the most extraordinary blonde gals in little bikinis on the beach. Such style! 7. It was all shot on a one-thousand dollar Canon 7D A masterpiece created on amateur hardware. 8. It created?the?careers of Dion Agius and Craig Anderson Craig Andersons manager at the time John Shimooka told me, “That cameo of Craigs was the start of it… four years ago he was definitely on minimum wage. Now, hes a top earner. Once youre affiliated with Kai… it carries a truckload of weight. ” Said Dino Andino, father and coach of the then 17-year-old Kolohe Andino. “If youre not top 10 in the world, you have to get in a Kai Neville movie. Ryan Callinan, he gets two waves, and its huge for him. You take him out of the movie and he might be super talented and super creative, but where would he be? The difference is huge. Money? If you star in that movie you can command 200 plus. If you werent in the movie, even if youre doing the same stuff, youre looking at 80 or 90. ” 9. Kolohe Andinos frontside grabs in a Canary Islands wavepool Most surreal, an ethereal interlude in a most prosaic film. 10. John Johns Sumbawa cameo Until Lost Atlas, the world only had a shadowy idea of how good John John was. Kai showed us. “I had him on my radar, but he just took it to a whole new level. ” said Kai. “Thats what I like seeing in surf films. That raw new talent when theyre surfing with the best guys. ” LOST ATLAS: A TIMELINE. 00:030: Credits. 00:31: 4:52: Mex with Dion Agius, Craig Anderson and Owen Wright, cute music, cuts to hard-core at 3:32 for a one-minute hit. Jordy “cringes” at the breath of a surf journalist. 6:34 to 8:59: Dusty Payne in Mex. 9:00 to 11:49: Mitch Coleborn, Chippa Wilson and John John Florence, Indo. 11:50 to 13:24: Conner Coffin, Ev Geiselman, Dylan Perillo and Owen Wright, south coast, NSW. 13:25 to 15:05: Jordy and Dane reprised. 15:11 to 16:31: Dusty, Julian Wilson and Wade Goodall in Chile. 16:32 to 18:30: Craig, Dion and Owen in Mex. 18:31 to 22:35: Craig, Ryan Callinan, Dylan and Yadin Nicol in Indo. 22:36 to 24:26: Dusty and Julian in Chile, points. Truth in plain sight. The devil gives them a playground. and watches them destroy themselves and each other. Doesnt even even have to lift a finger to make it happen. Thats humanity. The devil didnt make you do it. you WANTED to do it. Samaj me Koi ijjat Nahi hai. Sponge bob skit ruined the whole intro. When was The Victoria Advocate created. Lea Tsemel is a real, flesh-and-blood person, but if you saw someone like her in a fictional film, you might fault the screenwriter for inventing such an implausible character. Part of that is because of who Tsemel is and what she does: shes a Jewish Israeli attorney who has spent her career defending Palestinians accused of plotting and executing attacks on Jews. Even all of the contradictions and complexities inherent in that description, though, are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this fiery, fiercely dedicated woman. Rachel Leah Jones and Philippe Bellaïches documentary Advocate is an effort both to understand Tsemel and to document her tenacity and conviction in standing up for those who face the toughest odds in Israeli courtrooms. Its a revealing and challenging film, both a real-life legal drama and a character study of a singular and fascinating figure in the world of social justice. Of course, given the subject matter, Jones and Bellaïches work is bound to be controversial, and some audiences are likely to dismiss it outright. But, much like Tsemel endeavors to do with her clients, the filmmakers aim is to show an underlying human side of the Israeli/Palestinian story that might otherwise be lost within the sectarian conflict. “…shes a Jewish Israeli attorney who has spent her career defending Palestinians…” Advocate benefits quite a bit from a structural choice that ingeniously links Tsemels present and past. The majority of the film is made up of sequences that follow Tsemel and her legal team throughout their representation of one particular client: a 13-year old boy named Ahmad, accused of attempted murder for participating in a knife attack on Jewish citizens. The evidence proves that it was another teenager, killed during the incident, who did the actual stabbing; the entire attack was captured on video by eyewitnesses and security cameras. And while Ahmad confesses to authorities that he intended to scare and threaten victims, he maintains that he never planned to kill anyone ? though the prosecution is determined to overlook his testimony (and the video and physical evidence that would seem to corroborate it) in order to make the attempted murder charges stick. Ahmad is thus representative of many of the defendants that Tsemel fights for, in that its not so much his overall guilt or innocence thats in question, but, rather, how fairly and justly hell be treated in a court system thats severely weighted against people like him. As the film proceeds through its fly-on-the-wall documentation of the various stages of Ahmads court case, it periodically flashes back to historical footage and television appearances from other pivotal moments over the course of Tsemels legal career. Whats remarkable about the portrait that Advocate develops through this juxtaposition of then and now is just how consistent Tsemel is shown to be; the same toughness and passion that characterizes her as an older woman clearly shines through in every stage of her life. Theres a fearlessness, even brazenness, thats shown time and time again as she steps into the fray to defend those accused of terrorism and treason ? even, on one occasion, her own husband, arrested and detained for his activist activities as a director of a pro-Palestinian organization. Its nothing short of remarkable: although Tsemel admits that she expects to lose nearly every time she enters the courtroom, her fighting spirit has only intensified over time. “…raise awareness of the same issues of justice and representation within the complicated, often tragic world…” As effective it is exploring Tsemels character and unobtrusively capturing her in her element, Advocate does suffer a bit from its one-sidedness. Thats not to say the film is a hagiography ? some of the candid footage from her law office, for example, suggests that Tsemel can be a very difficult person to work for ? but, still, some additional outside perspective on her work might make for a more rounded portrayal. It would be particularly interesting to hear more from the prosecutors whove opposed her in court, and whether they view her more with grudging respect or outright contempt (we see small glimpses of both in their limited appearances onscreen. Still, despite that narrowness in its focus, Advocate is largely a success as a piece of filmmaking ? the directorial choices, from the minimal use of music for dramatic embellishment to the innovative split-screen technique used to blur the identities of individuals in courthouse footage, are spot-on throughout. Jones and Bellaïche have undoubtedly done right by their subject, here, but theres even more to it than that. In telling Tsemels story, theyve done their part to raise awareness of the same issues of justice and representation within the complicated, often tragic world of Jewish and Arabic opposition that Tsemel has sought to expose all along. Advocate is not just a celebration but a continuation of the work shes dedicated herself to. Advocate (2019) Directed by Rachel Leah Jones and Philippe Bellaïche. Aravind annanuku soft villain getup. Samaya workout aaguthu. Advocates. DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/21 June) ? See the world through Moro eyes. Watch Limbunan, the first BangsaMoro full-length narrative film that will have its debut at the sixth edition of Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in Manila on July 9 to 18. Written, produced and directed by Moro filmmaker Gutierrez “Teng” Mangansakan II, Limbunan “glimpses into the life of a bride-to-be as she is kept from public view prior to the wedding in her private quarters ? limbunan. ” According to its synopsis, the 82-minute film, set in 1989, “captures the ritual motions of the women in a traditional Maguindanaon family preparing for the wedding of 17-year old Ayesah (Jea Lyka Cinco) who is betrothed to a man she barely knows. ” “As preparations for her union is underway, Ayesah is reunited with her childhood tutor Maguid (Joem Bascon) who returns to the village as a militiaman after five years, reawakening Ayesahs past memory of childhood infatuation. Throughout Ayesahs confinement, her precocious and rebellious eight-year-old sister Saripa (Jamie Unte) becomes her eyes to the world beyond her room. Her mother Amina (Mayka B. Lintongan) keeps her composure despite the fact her husband sleeps with his second wife half of the time, finding solace in the belief that it is both her religious and familial duty to be an obedient wife. Ayesahs aunt Farida (Tetchie Agbayani) is tasked to ensure that she is prepared for the wedding. However, Faridas dark past challenges Ayesahs resolve finding herself choosing between love and loyalty to tradition and family, ” the synopsis reads. Mangansakan says the film is “about an arranged marriage of sorts” and is “an allegory of the relationship between Manila and Muslim Mindanao. ” There is a “disparity in the relationship, ” says Mangansakan. “Oftentimes our leaders would agree on concessions with the Manila government for selfish reasons, not putting in consideration the welfare of the people. For its part, the Manila government cultivates this type of relationship, this dependence. Unless the two parties start on equal footing, the relationship will remain feudal and??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? from oppressive., ” Mangansakan wrote. “I like to believe that Limbunan is a co-production of the Philippines and Bangsa Moro, ” Mangansakan states. As a finalist of the Full Length Feature category of Cinemalaya, he was awarded an initial seed investment of P500, 000 from Econolink Investments Inc. as a production grant. But Mangansakan had to come up with a counterpart financing of P600, 000 to complete his film. Mangansakan said he had to struggle with what he perceived as “impositions” from the Manila-based establishment of Cinemalaya and balance his artistic vision and expectation from the organizers. “It was a tough juggling act. You have, on one hand, the nurturing of the independent spirit. On the other hand, you have to contend with industry people with studio system line of thinking. They impose their way of making films, instead of encouraging you to find your voice. ” Mangansakan said he stood his ground. “After all, it is going to be my film, my way of seeing the world with Moro eyes. ” Mangansakan had earlier planned to do a film on Salamat Hashim, chair of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF. Mangansakans first film ? a short film ? “‘House Under the Crescent Moon” won the grand prize for video documentary from the Cultural Center of the Philippines Prize for Independent Film and Video” in 2001. “House Under the Cresent Moon” is a “personal reflection on the Moro peoples struggle for their homeland, using my grandfathers house as metaphor. I juxtaposed my personal experience in the house with historical events to weave a lyrical portrait of our collective dream for lasting peace. Made in a very crude fashion, the film contrasted my childhood memories in the house with its state as an evacuation center. ” His grandfathers house in Pagalungan, Maguindanao, was used by hundreds of internally displaced persons (bakwits) who fled their villages during the “all out war” waged by President Joseph Estrada against the Moro Islamic Liberation (MILF) in 2000. He has done more short films after that, focusing on the plight of women and children. “In the end, I hope that my films become the bittersweet pill that will heal the unreasonable hatred, fear and prejudice against my people, ” Mangansakan had earlier written. “If I can achieve this, my filmmaking will cease to become a product of accident. I will become the healer that I once dreamt of in my childhood, ” he said. Mangansakan is also the editor of “Children of the Ever-Changing Moon, ” an anthology of essays by young Moro writers. In 2005, he was named Defender of Cultural Heritage by the Fookien Times Philippines Yearbook for his efforts in nurturing the rich tradition of his Maguindanaon ancestry.
