At any rate, I couldn't allow those negative and misleading comments to be the first read by those who haven't seen "Meet Me in St. Louis. This movie is NOT plotless, obnoxious or racist. "Meet Me in St. Louis" is what is sometimes called a "slice of life" story. Basically, it tells the story of one year (1903-1904) in the lives of the Smith family. What gives the story its charm is that everyday yearnings and incidents become the stuff of major drama, just as they do in real life. Older sister Esther (the wonderful Judy Garland) is determined to get the attention of the object of her affections, the boy next door (Tom Drake. Youngest sister Tootie (Margaret O'Brien) uses Halloween to prove that she can be a mischief-maker on a level with the older kids. Taken by themselves, neither of these events seems terribly exciting. What is great about "Meet Me in St. Louis" however, is that it gives these events the importance that they hold in the minds of the characters. As Esther sings in "The Trolley Song. As he started to go, then I started to know how it feels when the universe reels! Most of us will never rule a nation or go on a great adventure. But we can all identify with what it's like to be seventeen, NEEDING to win the love of your crush. Or when you're five and MUST prove that you're not a baby anymore. This is why this film is so beloved and timeless. As to the criticisms levelled at the color-saturation, I saw this as a way of showing how we always see our youth as a bright place. Don't we tend to imagine our youth as brighter, sunnier and more colorful than it actually was? And as for the, if you can't appreciate and enjoy songs like "The Trolley Song. The Boy Next Door" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" I feel sorry for you. No one sings "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" with the yearning and pain that Judy gives the song. And "The Trolley Song" makes me smile every time I hear it. It's true that "Meet Me in St. Louis" isn't for everyone. The overly-cynical and pessimistic probably won't enjoy it at all. But for those of us who like to look back and smile on our youth and escape to a less-complicated world for a couple of hours, there's no place like St. Louis.

It Happened at the World's Fair In this musical, Mike Edwards (Elvis Presley) is a crop duster who loses his plane due to the gambling habits of his partner, Danny Burke (Gary Lockwood). I felt like I was at a movie palace if i lived in the 40s. For a 75 year old classic, my Aunt Theresa who was my date even kept saying its older than she is and and she wasnt born until 1955. Im only almost 27 and havent seen the movie until I was 19 in my senior year of high school.
Being a resident of St. Louis my whole life, I remember how much fanfare surrounded the 100th anniversary of the 1904 World’s Fair. It was mentioned many times, but my main takeaway as an eleven-year-old was “it was an event that brought the whole world to St. Louis, there were some extravagant buildings, there was a song about the fair, and I guess it was really grand. ” Despite my lack of knowledge, this is when I saw Meet Me in St. Louis with Judy Garland for the first time. I’ve always enjoyed the occasional old movie, so I thought the movie was fine. I liked the year in the life approach to the story, I enjoyed the musical numbers, and Judy Garland has a great voice. I don’t remember most of the side stories throughout the film, but the one I remember the most was when the father told the family that they would be moving to New York right before the fair. I know that movies need conflicts, but I always felt that that was contrived. With that being said, this movie accomplishes what it set out to do, shows the audience what life was like for a family looking forward to the fair, and having the privilege of living close to a worldwide event. Before talking about this film, I want to mention that I’ve been doing a lot of research regarding the World’s Fair over the past few months, so I want to see how much this film talks about the fair. I don’t remember a lot of references, considering that this film isn’t about the World’s Fair specifically. I think it’s also worth mentioning that this is one of possibly two Hollywood films centered around a world’s fair, the other is an Elvis Presley film called “It Happened at The World’s Fair, ” which takes place at the Seattle World’s Fair in 1962. I heard it wasn’t very good. (One Second Viewing Later) Well after watching the movie again, I enjoyed it, but I can only think of a small handful of things to say about it. It is a story about the year in the life in the early 1900s. The movie focuses on the Smith family, consisting of a mother, father, four daughters, and a maid servant; they also have a son, but he doesn’t make much of an impression. Because this is a period piece, there are plot elements that show that this was a different time. For example, the Smith family makes a big deal about a long distance phone call early in the film. Because calling long distance was so expensive, of course the young man calling would be doing so to propose to the eldest daughter. But no, he only wanted to check up on her and acknowledge that it’s so cool that they can call long distance. My favorite scene in the movie had to be when the two younger daughters celebrate Halloween. Halloween has changed a lot in the past hundred years because this is nothing like how Halloween is celebrated today. Yes, the kids dressed in costumes, but instead of asking for treats, the kids were throwing flower in the faces of the people the didn’t like. Also, there was a large group of kids throwing old furniture into a bonfire on the neighborhood street. That’s something kids wouldn’t do today, why were they burning old furniture in the first place? It was so different, it made little to no sense, and I was extremely fascinated. Then there are the tropes found in movies during any time period. First things first, the star Judy Garland needs to have a love interest. His name is John and he seems nice, but he doesn’t make that much of an impression. One character who does make an impression is the youngest daughter Tootie played by Margaret O’Brien; she was seven when the movie came out, was billed below Judy Garland, and received an academy award for Best Juvenile Performer. Her character is bursting with personality, she’s given quite a bit of material to work with, and she doesn’t disappoint. One of her best scenes happens during Halloween, where she demands to participate and throw flower into an old man’s face. That kid is completely terrified both before and after she goes through with the action. There’s another scene where Tootie crashes the young adult’s party, and then sings a song about how she’ll never get drunk anymore; listening to a seven-year-old sing something like that will always be amusing. So what about the references to the World’s Fair? It seems like there are four general references throughout the film. The movie opens with some characters singing the song, Meet Me In St. Louis, which is appropriate considering that that’s the title of the movie. Later on, Judy Garland rides a streetcar to see the fairgrounds, which is where the famous Trolley Scene occurs. Next, when the father reveals that the family is moving to New York, Judy Garland asks “what about the fair? The one time the world comes to St. Louis, and we’re moving away from it. ” At the end of the movie, the family gets to see the fair in its full glory, and Tootie talks about the Galveston Flood concession. One line I found extremely amusing is when one of the palaces lights up and Tootie says “Grandpa, they’ll never tear it down, will they, ” to which the grandfather replies “oh they better not! ” Poor Tootie is going to be so disappointed at the end of the year. I hope she liked the Palace of Fine Arts, because that’s the only thing that’s staying up. So yeah, this may not be the most memorable film, and it’s barely a film about the World’s Fair, but it is a good period piece that represents a time period that seems underrepresented in media. The movie follows some similar story telling tropes, but it gives the viewer a good idea of what life was like back in the early 1900s. Family gathering were important, the mother didn’t have much of a say when it came to family decisions, the grandparents would live with the rest of the family, and Halloween was similar, yet very different, both at the same time. I have a feeling that this was a movie that the producers wanted to make. They set out to represent one particular point in time, and they succeeded.
Amazing stage presence. I hadn't got around to seeing this film, despite it's high reputation and the presence of Garland, but now I have - I'm just a bit disappointed. It is far too saccharine and drags when the musical numbers have gone by (the songs are fine, The Trolley Song, The Boy Next Door, Have Yourself A Very Merry Christmas. and Margaret O'Brien, good though she was, is very irritating and I don't have much goodwill left for her by the end of the film! Lucille Bremer makes a colourless elder sister, Judy Garland seems a little old to be skipping about and fighting with boys. Leon Ames and Mary Astor are good as the parents, however (they even sing duet at the piano, how civilised this family are. Harry Davenport is reliable as ever as grandpa, and Marjorie Main does a little scene stealing in her usual way as Katie the maid. I just can't understand what Esther/Judy sees in the boy next door! Tom Drake sadly has the charisma of a wet fish. I'd file this film as hit and miss. As far as the St Louis' fair' goes, once we get to it, I'd much rather have the fairground in 1945's 'State Fair' and the spirit of that film too.
