JACK IS IN THIS MOVIE AAAAAAH. You had me at accurate casting, it truly looks beautiful. Young girl goes to see The Aeronauts. Is inspired to greatness because of the great historical heroine Amelia. Puts posters of the movie on her wall and dreams of emulating her achievements. Only to discover down the line that she didn't even exist and was simply a substitute for a male historical hero. Tell her her dreams will only ever be realised in fiction, and will never be real. Deflate her belief in herself and make her feel a fraud and lied to. Way to go.

The things I discovered after watching this movie: Two men did something to do with weather in a balloon. Amelia Wren is based on a real, earlier female Aeronaut, Sophie Blanchard. Two potentially decent historically accurate movies. The latter serving as a real inspiration for young girls. Instead we got one historical mish-mash that just upsets everyone who bothers to check it out. I'll give it three stars for making me aware of a few things from history. Something most won't bother to follow through.

They soon run into a violent storm which sends the balloon spinning. In a flashback, Antonia persuades her sister, Amelia, to attend a society function. There, Amelia is approached by James and he asks if she would be willing to be his pilot while he attempts to prove his theories to which she agrees. After a close brush with death, with James suffering a head injury, they make it through the storm and continue rising. James releases the first of five pigeons carrying messages stating the current altitude along with other scientific readings in case they don't survive. They discover an air current which is home to a group of butterflies, confirming one of the theories of James' friend John Trew, a theory that James had always disputed. In a flashback, as James practices for the flight, Amelia approaches and tells him shes changed her mind. At this, John goes to see Amelia to convince her. Amelia goes to Pierres grave to reflect. When it begins to snow, as James had predicted, she decides to go with him after all. Eventually, the balloon exceeds 23, 000 feet (7. 0?km) beating the record for the highest altitude. Amelia finds out James didnt bring any clothes suitable for the rapidly decreasing temperature and decides to start descending. James refuses, and the two argue. Amelia agrees to keep rising, but makes it clear to James that theyll have to start descending soon. James starts experiencing hypoxia from the altitude as they ascend and insists they continue. The two get into a scuffle. That is when Amelia tells him the story of how Pierre sacrificed himself to save her during a balloon flight. This convinces James to descend. Amelia discovers the gas release valve on top of the balloon is frozen. As James falls unconscious, she has no choice but to climb up the outside of the balloon and open the valve from the top. With frostbite setting in on her hands, she struggles to wedge her boot in the valve, causing a slow release of the gas. Amelia loses consciousness and topples over the side but is saved by her rope tether. When she awakens, Amelia manages to swing back to the balloon and wakes James. As they continue to descend, snow begins to hover around them, and they realize the balloon is collapsing from the loss of too much gas. They manage to close the gas release but it is not enough to slow their descent, so they throw everything they can over the side. When this doesnt work, they climb into the framework and release the basket. Amelia then prepares to sacrifice herself to save James, but James convinces her that they can use the balloon as a parachute, which slows their descent. Myslím si, že film skvele vyzerá, má niekoľko vynikajúcich momentiek, no na druhú stranu mám pocit, že tento naratív sme už videli viackrát a nikdy mi nejako poriadne nepasoval. Aj keď sú tie flashbacky celkom zaujíamvé tak kedykoľvek sme došli do minulosti (až na jednu výnimku) som si hovoril, kedy sa opäť vrátime do balóna. Úvod pôsobí grandiózne a dúfal som, že Felicity Jones trošku upustí od toho teatrálneho tónu. A našťastie áno. Atmosféra tam rozhodne je, finále je silné a hlavní hrdinovia sú skvelí a odvážni. Bavilo am sledovať ich dobrodružstvo. Čo mi však ešte trošku niekedy vadí je, že vždy potrebujeme v týchto filmoch nejakých britských povýšencov a snobov, ktorí potrebujú dať najavo, že sú niečo viac ako iní. Tieto postavy nikdy nemám rád a sú iba otravné. No príbeh ako taký je podľa mňa zaujímavý a malo to niečo do seba. Určite ma to zaujímalo, bol som zvedavý čo sa bude diať ďalej a nepôsobí to neuveriteľne. Takže dávam Tomovi Harperovi palec hore a ako celok som spokojný. Ak máte radi životopisné filmy, mylsím si, že nebudete tých 100 minút ľutovať. Má to dobrý spád, dobré postavy a skvelú atmosféru vo vnútri balóna. Čeknite si film a uvidíte sami. Kto je Tom Harper, a kto je pre zmenu George Steel? Nejako som o nich doteraz ešte nepočul. Pravdepodobne sú obidvaja čistokrvní briti, ako vyšití, keď prvý je režisér tohto snímku, ktorý ma naprosto ohromil, opantal svojou unikátnou víziou, že súčasne bez druhého si nedokážem absolútne vôbec predstaviť, že by nebol toho súčasťou. Maximálna dôkladnosť, kedy sa normálne bojíte o našich hrdinov, čo sa im tam hore môže ľahko stať, ak by nastala, čo by len malinká komplikácia. A tých bolo niekoľko. Mal som zdania, že IMAX urobil svoje, a preto to pôsobilo tak majestátne, akoby ste sa nachádzali priamo tisícky metrov nad morom! Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne are back together again in The Aeronauts, another dazzling biographical drama set in 1862 (we loved them in The Theory of Everything, the story of Stephen and Jane Hawking. This time Jones plays aeronaut Amelia Wren, and Redmayne portrays James Glaisher, a meteorologist. Both are determined to break the world flight altitude in a coal gas-fueled balloon. While Glaisher's goal is to study the possibility of weather forecasting, Amelia's ambitions stem from the loss of her husband, Pierre, an aeronaut who dies in flight. Both are portrayed as brave individuals who go against the grain in order to discover the unknown. Wren and Glaisher end up ascending so high in the sky that eventually, the dangerous altitude threatens their lives as the balloon struggles to stay afloat in violent, freezing temperatures. While The Aeronauts is inspired by real events, its not 100 percent historically accurate. Amelia Wren Is Actually Based On Real-Life Aeronaut Henry Coxwell While aeronaut, meteorologist, and astronomer James Glaisher did exist, and did break the world balloon flight record, he didnt do so with partner-in-crime Amelia Wren. Amelia is actually based on aeronaut Henry Coxwell, Glaishers true co-balloon pilot. Coxwell became a professional aeronaut in 1848, and made many trips all over the world. In 1862, Glaisher sought him out so that the British Association for the Advancement of Science could study the weather and atmosphere, as well as the possibility of forecasting the weather (yup, there was a time you couldnt look at your phones weather app. Although the trailer shows us a glimpse of it happening, Glaisher really did pass out and his final barometer reading before doing so was an altitude of 29, 000 ft. Coxwell apparently couldnt feel his hands by the end of their journey, but was able to save them both by pulling the valve-cord with his teeth like a total badass (this allowed the balloon to descend and get them safely to land. It was later calculated that they reached somewhere between 35, 000 and 37, 000 feet in the sky. Amelia Wren also takes into consideration a few other real people. The Aeronauts screenwriter Jack Thorne also based Amelias character on Sophie Blanchard. She was a French aeronaut and daredevil pilot who died in 1819 after she launched a firework that blew up her hot air balloon. Blanchards husband, Jean-Pierre, was also an aeronaut who died during a balloon flight (Jean-Pierre was the inspiration for the fictional Amelias late husband in the film. The Real James Glaisher Story Is Changed In The Aeronauts, Too The Aeronauts also took liberties with Glaishers character. In the film, Glaishers theories about weather forecasting are belittled by colleagues. While Amelia is dealing with the tragic death of her husband by literally flying away from her sorrows, Glaishers mission seems to be almost out of spite in order to prove all the naysayers wrong. In real life, Glaisher was a founding member of the Meteorological Society as well as the Aeronautical Society of Great Britain. In fact, the British Association for the Advancement of Science actually wanted Glaisher to fly the balloon in order to conduct studies around the atmosphere and weather.? The Royal Society Is Upset With The Aeronauts' Level Of Accuracy While The Aeronauts substituted Coxwell with the fictional Amelia to reposition the narrative to be more progressive, some believe it wasnt necessary to rewrite history ? especially since Coxwells bravery was so lauded and well-documented. According to The Telegraph, Keith Moore, Head of Library at the Royal Society (the Royal Society is the U. K. s national academy of sciences, and its the oldest science institution in the world) stated, “Its a great shame that Henry isnt portrayed because he performed very well and saved the life of a leading scientist. ” He added, “There were so many deserving female scientists of that period who havent had films made about them. Why not do that instead? ” But Harper wanted to modernize the real-life story. “I wanted it to not be two middle-aged men in a basket. I wanted it to be reflective for a contemporary audience, ” Harper tells The List. Harper responded to the Royal Societys feedback that there are other female scientists who deserve screen time by saying, “Its true. There were female scientists around the time, but not in the Royal Society, because they werent allowed in the Royal Society until 1948 or something, and even to this day, only eight percent of the Royal Society is female. ” I mean, touché. Maybe those who criticize the fudging of historical accuracy in The Aeronauts are missing the point. While the real-life Coxwell certainly deserves recognition for his bravery, its not like The Aeronauts is the first biographical film thats been dramatized. And honestly, we just want to see what happens when two humans float 35, 000 feet into the air.? The Aeronauts will be playing in select theaters December 6 and will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime December 20.

Gorgeous and goofy, fanciful and unrepentantly old-fashioned, this Victorian adventure (its set in 1862) delights much more when its head is in the clouds than when its feet are on the ground. The wellspring of the movies joie de vivre is Amelia Wren (a wonderful Felicity Jones) a fearless balloonist with a tragic past and a gift for exhibitionism. The movie opens with a rush as she arrives at a launch site astride the roof of a carriage, her peacock-hued frock and feathered headdress fluttering gaily. The crowd is ecstatic as she cartwheels around the waiting balloon under the disapproving gaze of her flight partner, the meteorologist James Glaisher ( Eddie Redmayne. Glaisher is taking the trip to test his theories of weather prediction ? this being London, those mostly amount to determining the likelihood of a drizzle versus a downpour ? and Amelias carnival antics annoy him. Hes even more miffed when, after liftoff, she flings her little dog, Posey, out of the basket, accompanied by a spray of fireworks. Calm yourself, James: Posey has a parachute. Swiftly establishing a stuffy-scientist-meets-sexy-daredevil dynamic, the director, Tom Harper, and his screenwriter, Jack Thorne, proceed to upend our gender expectations. While James fusses awkwardly with his pressure and altitude readings, Amelia is busily keeping them alive. The star of the movie in every way, shes skilled and practical and brave: Shes the one with the common sense to bring oilskins and to recognize the dangers in the plummeting temperature and thinning air. That she also understands the benefits of publicity and showmanship is only a plus. A composite of several real-life balloon trips ( Glaisher is real and Wren is fictitious, but likely based on the flamboyant French balloonist Sophie Blanchard) “The Aeronauts” has a natural buoyancy that mostly resists the drag of its earthbound flashbacks. Stuffy scenes between James and his parents ( Tom Courtenay and Anne Reid) alternate with his entreaties for money from the Royal Society, where his bewhiskered fellow scientists think hes a hoot. After a few of these interludes, neither we nor the movie can wait to get back in that basket with Amelia. Structural road blocks aside, “The Aeronauts” is that rare adventure movie to celebrate the silence in which its wonders unfold. The cloud of butterflies that magically appears, and the flakes of snow that hover, seemingly stationary, around the balloon during its too-swift descent, are permitted to linger quietly on the screen and in the mind. At one point ? in the films most terrifying sequence ? as Amelia climbs up the balloons exterior to release a perilously frozen gas valve, George Steels cinematography has such a hushed and blinding beauty that it would be a crime to close your eyes. Equal parts dizzying and dippy, “The Aeronauts” is family entertainment at its most charming and chaste. By and by, you realize youve been watching a romance blossom without a single kiss, but that shouldnt be a surprise: What James and Amelia are really in love with is the sky. There were so many accomplished female scientists in late 1800s who struggled immensely to get where they were. Why not make movies about them instead totally replacing a male character with a female one just to make it more relevant & completely brushing over the brilliance & bravery of Henry Coxwell.
