When is The New Mutants released in the UK? The New Mutants is currently set to be released in UK cinemas on the 10th April 2020, less than a week after it comes out in the US. However, it seems possible this release date will change as the film has been continually delayed. Originally set to be released in April 2018, the film was bumped to August 2019, and has now been pushed again. Now, the film will be released two years after it was intended to be. Why has it been so delayed? 20th Century Fox Accounts vary, though some of the earlier delays were apparently part of an attempt to add reshoots to the movie to make it scarier, as well as finding a good spot for fellow 20th Century Fox movie Dark Phoenix (in other words, shifting around various movies on the slate. After Fox was bought by fellow studio Disney, new considerations (including the film not competing with Disneys own) came into play, leading some to wondering if the film would ever see the light of day. The latest rumblings (via Variety) is that the studio is “unimpressed with New Mutants… and believes it has limited box office potential”. Still, at time of writing, the film remains on course for cinema release in spring 2020. Whats the story? A creepy twist on the original comics, The New Mutants follows a group of five young mutants just discovering their powers who are being kept in a strange facility, where their own abilities create terrifying challenges they have to escape. Is there a trailer? There are two! One is from back when the film was supposed to come out in April 2018, and it shows off all sorts of creepy goings-on as the New Mutants come into their abilities. A second trailer referring to the new 2020 airdate has now been released as well, and gives a hint at more of the plot as Dani Moonstar (Blu Hunt) arrives at the hospital and discovers that the staff there may not have the young heroes best interests at heart… Who stars in The New Mutants? Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams plays wolf-like mutant Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, while Anya Taylor-Joy plays Illyana Rasputin/Magik, who has the ability to teleport via portals. Joining them are flying, invulnerable mutant Sam Guthrie, aka Cannonball (Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton) fear-based illusionist Danielle Moonstar/Mirage (Blu Hunt) and solar-powered strongman Roberto da Costa/Sunspot (Henry Zaga) a character who previously appeared (played by a different actor) in 2014s X-Men: Apocalypse. Antonio Banderas is also set to appear in the film as a mysterious villain, with Alice Braga portraying the groups mentor Dr Cecilia Reyes. How does it tie in with the other X-Men movies? Initially the film was supposed to be set in the same universe as the X-Men and Deadpool movies with possible crossovers, but whether thats still the case is unclear, especially now. Originally the film was set to feature a post-credits scene of Jon Hamm playing classic X-Men villain Mister Sinister, but that plan has apparently been scrapped following the wind-up of the X-Men movies with Dark Phoenix, and its unknown whether other crossover details have been similarly excised. One connection will probably remain, however, as Taylor-Joys character is canonically the sister of metallic X-Man Colossus/ Peter Rasputin, played by Daniel Cudmore and Stefan Kapičić in various X-Men and Deadpool movies. Who were the New Mutants in the comics? In the original comics the New Mutants were introduced as the new “class” of underage mutants when the original X-Men had completed their training, who studied at Xaviers School while the more familiar characters dealt with bigger concerns. Of course, in the end the New Mutants got into all sorts of dangerous (and often fatal) clashes with super-villains and the like anyway, but the story of them being held in a special facility appears to have been invented for the film. All the characters in the film were core members of the team, though some characters (including the lava-controlling Magma and the, er, super-linguist Doug Ramsay/Cypher) appear to have been left out. The New Mutants is will be released on UK cinemas 10th April 2020.
I wrote about the first trailer for The New Mutants on October 13, 2017. It was released on Friday the 13th, and timed to be attached to theatrical prints of Universal and Blumhouses Happy Death Day. At the time, it was one of three major Fox X-Men movies opening in theaters in 2018, alongside Dark Phoenix (originally slated for November 2, 2017) and Deadpool 2 (May 18, 2018. I wrote then that it was the most interesting-looking/sounding of the three X-Men movies, as at least it was playing in a different sandbox. And since then, well, what year is it again? Dark Phoenix was moved to June of 2019 where it died a terrible death (253 million worldwide on a 200 million budget) and Deadpool 2 earned a terrific 785 million worldwide (partially thanks to a PG-13 cut of the movie playing in China) on a 110 million budget. Oh, and, uh, Walt Disney bought Fox. The first whispers of that possibility came about in late 2017, and Id wager the ins-and-outs of that 18-month process (everything got finalized in May of 2019) was a big part of why we never saw The New Mutants and/or why the allegedly-planned reshoots never took place. The Josh Boone-directed flick, starring Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga and Blu Hunt, about young mutants discovering their powers while imprisoned in a secret facility, shot in late summer/early Fall of 2017. It was intended for an April 13, 2018 release date. However, re-shoots designed to make the film scarier (which Boone originally wanted and Fox agreed to after? It? grossed 700 million worldwide in September of 2017) still haven't happened yet. The film was delayed in January of 2018 to February 22, 2019, only to be postponed to August of 2019 and then, in a massive Disney/Fox release date shuffle, April 3, 2020. 'The new Mutants' Fox Yes, we are allegedly finally getting this film on April 3, not on Disney+ or Hulu but as a wide theatrical release. And now, over two years after that first trailer, a lifetime ago in terms of whats happened in the theatrical/movie industry since then, what exactly is The New Mutants? I dont mean “What is this movie? ” because it seems to be pretty similar in content and tone to what was always promised. I mean, in the broad scheme of Marvel and Disneys library, what is this thing? Its the last remnants of a dead franchise, existing neither as reboot nor franchise-starter nor component of an existing brand. Its not intended to continue Foxs X-Men franchise, as that would have been rebooted into the MCU even if Dark Phoenix hadnt flamed out. It may or may not be part of the MCU, but if so its going to be, by default, the most stand-alone MCU movie ever. Even Bumblebee, which found itself going from spin-off movie to soft reboot after Transformers: The Last Knight earned just 604 million 18 months earlier, at least had a possible destiny as the first installment of a new wave of Transformers movies. But this? I mean, in a less branded/IP/franchise-friendly era, it would just be a “a movie. ” As much as we like to give Marvel credit for the modern cinematic universe, the Fast & Furious series (which made two loose spin-offs to the original before getting everyone back together for a traditional sequel) and Foxs X-Men series (a main trilogy, a Wolverine spin-off trilogy, a rebooted/prequel quadrilogy and the Deadpool movies) tried it, or at least started it, first. While Chris Nolans “Sydney Lumet-meets-Michael Mann-meets Batman” epic? The Dark Knight? gets the credit for creating the idea of a comic book superhero movie as a straight genre affair and Marvels Phase Two used genre diversification as a selling point, Foxs? X-Men dabbled in that as well. 'The New Mutants' X-Men Origins: Wolverine? is essentially a Cannon-ish 1980s action grind house adventure, while? The Wolverine? is a samurai drama and? Logan? is a western. And Matthew Vaughns? X-Men: First Class? took the series back in time for what turned out to be a peppy and lively 1960s spy caper. So, when you tell me that? Deadpool? is a superhero spoof and? The New Mutants? in a haunted house horror movie with strong potential to be the kind of YA fantasy-targeted superhero movie that? Amazing Spider-Man? was supposed to be when it was greenlit as “ Twilight? with webs, ” I say, “Well, that sounds about right. ” Add in Boone, whose? The Fault in our Stars? remains one of the great YA-targeted melodramas this side of? Titanic, and you have/had the ingredients for a very exciting would-be comic book adaptation. In a different time, with Fox not being under the Disney umbrella, The New Mutants really was, on paper, an exciting combo of the X-Men franchise and a sub-genre (the YA fantasy flick) that had been struggling of late. But now? I honestly how have no idea how this film will be received when it opens on April 3. But Im happy that it will be seen and that itll be in theaters. Moreover, thanks to the end of Foxs X-Men series (which was, and technically until it is officially dead, still is the second-longest longest-running never-rebooted sabbatical-free franchise behind the Mission: Impossible films that never) and Foxs new home under the Disney umbrella, The New Mutants is something almost impossibly quaint in 2020. Its theatrical existence is just about giving Disney a slight boost in the whole “overall market share” department for 2020. Its not intended to launch or sustain a franchise or a cinematic universe. Come what may, The New Mutants is just “a movie. ” Nothing more, nothing less.

T he X-Men horror The New Mutants has had quite the mutated journey to the screen: several scrapped release dates, abandoned reshoots, a new character who never materialized, issues around colorism in casting, and finally, a corporate acquisition that nearly shelved the project altogether. Now that the dust has settled, a release date has been firmly set for 3 April and this week, a new trailer launched, does the final product have any hopes of being any good? Back in October 2017, everything seemed on track when Fox released the first trailer online. After 10 films, X-Men fatigue was settling in, but The New Mutants was pitched as something different. Not only would it be the first scary movie in the universe but it would introduce a host of never-before-seen-on-screen characters ? Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy) Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams) Cannonball (Charlie Heaton) Sunspot (Henry Zaga) and Danielle Moonstar, AKA Mirage (Blu Hunt) ? and trap them in a haunted asylum, a juicy prospect that was enough to pique interest. The director Josh Boone pitched the story, based on the Demon Bear arc by the writer Chris Claremont and the relatively avant-garde artist Bill Sienkiewicz, as the start of a trilogy, one that would later introduce characters like Karma and Warlock. The movie was scheduled for release on 13 April 2018. But by January, the cracks started to show. The film was pushed way back to February 2019 and then to August 2019 to make space for Deadpool 2 and Dark Phoenix, respectively. Per the Tracking Board, the studio wanted the film reworked to be even scarier, to capitalize on the new horror wave started by Get Out and It. By February 2018, the Hollywood Reporter claimed that The New Mutants was undergoing an additional round of photography, and would include a new character ? changes that appear now to have never occurred. Boone told Creative Screenwriting that navigating the politics of studio film-making was “ its own special beast ” that led to a “constantly morphing” script (that was repeatedly “torn apart and put together” by four other scriptwriters and a six-person writers room. Tracking Board said Boone felt “a bit neutered” by Fox, as the company couldnt decide if it wanted New Mutants to be a YA drama or an all-out splatterfest. Disney acquired Fox in March 2019, and New Mutants got lost in the shuffle until Boone re-emerged in December 2019 to confirm Disney would be releasing the film as originally shot. Boone finally seems to have regained creative control of his project, but elsewhere the film stumbled under the studios direction in more profound ways. Fans noted that both the casting of Alice Braga as Dr Cecilia Reyes and Henry Zaga as Sunspot erased their identities as Afro-Latinx characters and perpetuated issues of colorism ? already oft spoken about in regard to Storm. Comparing character redesigns and colorings across comic book runs can be fraught, but canonically all three have been portrayed as darker-skinned in their earliest incarnations. This seems like an unfortunate misstep that goes against the nature of the story itself, as Stan Lee told the Guardian in 2000 that the X-Men were a direct metaphor “for what was happening with the civil rights movement”. (“Lets lay it right on the line, ” Lee wrote in the comics in 1968. “Bigotry and racism are among the deadliest social ills plaguing the world today. ”) So whats to be done? Can The New Mutants climb out of this pyre to become, if not the most progressive, at least a passably good comic book film? Considerable baggage aside, one angle to consider is the potential novelty of the story: unlike the world-ending stakes that comic book films often shoehorn in, the Demon Bear saga has a focused scope. In the comics, the demonic bear that killed Danis parents stalks and nearly kills her, and when the bear comes to finish the job, the New Mutants throw down in a hospital. Its a horror story that is, at its core, about the importance of friendship, family and the ties that bind ? and arent the best horror tales often about that? With rumors that New Mutants will feature a romance between Dani and Wolfsbane, its easy to see how Boone (who directed The Fault in Our Stars) could ground a more nightmare-inducing adaptation in a tale of young love. Does that make The New Mutants automatically good? Not necessarily, but itd mark the film as more unique than the vast majority of city-leveling X-Men films, and put it more in line with standalones like Logan and Deadpool. A rather thorny issue with the X-Men films as a whole is how poorly theyve juggled their vast stable of characters, focusing primarily on the same white, often male, leads. While the original 2000 X-Men had a unique, gritty, indie quality to it ? terrified loner Rogue meets gruff father figure Wolverine ? the subsequent films got lost in the sauce, repeatedly centering Wolverine, Professor X, Magneto, and then to a lesser extent, Jean and Mystique, to the detriment of literally everyone else in the X-verse. Rogues powers went mostly unexplored; Jubilee is never named on camera; the omega-level Darwin was easily killed; Kitty Prydes comic book role was handed to Wolverine in Days of Future Past; Storm and Emma Frost were underutilized; the list goes on. To put it frankly, the core X-Men films suffered from a profound lack of imagination, and though theyre ensembles, not a single one of their 12 films can boast a character of color as the primary lead. Isnt it disappointing that the franchise that was built on the importance of being different was too afraid to be different itself? This is what The New Mutants, warts and all, has going for it: Blu Hunts Dani Moonstar is the first Native American to lead a comic book film, a fact thats gotten buried in all the scheduling conflicts and reshooting drama. Though Hunts casting also fueled some concerns of colorism, it remains a notable leap forward. Theres an opportunity ? a hope ? that Boone and the other writers on the film also fixed the problems of the original Demon Bear story (Dani turns into a damsel in distress, and the Demon Bear inexplicably turns two white characters into Native Americans) and let Dani be the true lead in her own tale. That the sun will set on this entire Fox franchise right as the studio landed on Dani as a lead feels particularly tragic. Despite being fantastical tales of aliens, monsters, superhumans and robots, nearly all comic book films have issues around primarily favoring the stories of white characters, and/or casting light-skinned or white-passing actors. The New Mutants, at the very least, foregrounds an indigenous woman of color, who literally wrestles with her heritage and legacy, all while developing a newfound family at Xaviers school. It stands a good chance of being a fun one-off film, but the brass tacks of it all is that Dani Moonstar deserved better, as all the X-Men of color deserved better. Hopefully Disney will see the value in Danis story and keep her around, or at least greenlight future X-Men projects focused on lesser-seen characters from the get-go. If Disney ends up rebooting with Professor X and Magneto again, while pushing off all the characters of color until a third phase (a la Black Panther) The New Mutants will forever be remembered as a landmark casting, but also a tragic example of too little, too late.

But now that a bit of time has passed since Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox, the ball is finally rolling on the original thriller, and fans have a brand new trailer to enjoy! The new trailer for X-Men: The New Mutants is a perfect preview of how different the film is from the previously released X-Men films. Gone are the flashy X-Uniforms and hallowed halls of X-Mansion. In their place? Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Stranger Things 's Charlie Heaton running for their damn lives. The three, along with Henry Zaga and Blu Hunt, play a group of young, inexperienced mutants whose abilities are finally rising to the surface. Unfortunately, they're also being held in a top-secret facility against their will, and the only way to escape the horrors within might leave them even more scarred.
