Movies | ‘Afterward’ Review: Asking for Opinions of Jews and Israel A documentary seeks to find out what people think of Jews, the Holocaust and history. Credit... Alex Stikich/Abramorama “I wonder if any of us have learned from the past, ” Ofra Bloch, the director of “Afterward, ” says upon hearing the agonizing story of Abir Aramin, a 10-year-old Palestinian girl who was shot and killed by Israeli forces in 2007. Yet when watching Abir’s father speak of forgiveness, and discovering that more than 100 former Israeli soldiers and officers later worked to plant a garden in the child’s name, optimism flickers. Such moments keep this tough documentary from sinking into despair. Bloch was born in Jerusalem, served in the Israeli military and later moved to the United States. To explore her own history, and to better understand rising anti-Semitism around the world, she travels to Germany, where she and other Jews are treated as victims. Elsewhere, she speaks with Palestinians, who curse Israelis as occupiers. The contrasts aren’t lost on the director, who trained as a psychoanalyst and specializes in trauma. She’s an excellent interviewer, asking difficult questions about what her subjects think of Israel, the Holocaust and the Jewish people, then carefully considering the answers. We hear from sympathetic Europeans and a former neo-Nazi; and from Palestinians, some of whom won’t denounce violence, others who promote peace. The resulting emotions are complex, and Bloch, here directing her first feature, can be excused for allowing a few of the scenes to stray. But by the end of the documentary, she and many of her subjects posit that it’s possible to learn from history and to change, and to trust each other a little more. Without polemics or false equivalencies, Bloch turns an empathetic ear to the stories and convictions of a compelling group of subjects, all of whom carry the scars of generational catastrophe. In Germany we meet Johanna, the daughter of a Nazi soldier who has become an oral historian of Holocaust testimonies; and Ingo, a reformed neo-Nazi, both of whose lives have been shaped in different ways by the crimes of a long-ago generation. And in Palestine, Bloch listens to the stories and convictions of (to name just two) Bassan, a peace activist whose 10-year-old daughter was killed by an Israeli soldier; and Muhammad, a professor who brought his Palestinian students to Auschwitz. Through these and other moving encounters, Bloch dares to explore the psychic wounds that connect victim and perpetrator, historical wrong and present-day justice. She grew up in Israel, where her deep interest in the short and long-term effects of trauma originated. She earned her Master's degree in social work at Columbia University, and complete both the International Trauma Studies program at NYU, and a training program in psychoanalys is at the National Institute of the Psychotherapies. She has volunteered with Doctors of the World, where she interviewed victims of torture, and wrote their affidavits. She began making short documentaries 10 years ago. Afterward is her first feature documentary.

According to Ofra Bloch, the Jerusalem-born, New York-based psychoanalyst who wrote, directed and stars in the compelling, thought-provoking documentary “Afterward, ” there’s a belief that trauma can be passed down between generations and even manifest in our DNA. That is, we can be haunted by events that happened before we were born. It’s a fascinating theory that Bloch unpacks via frank interviews with several Germans, whose identities have been shaped by the horrific legacy of the Holocaust, as well as an array of Palestinians, who have lived in the shadow of the Nakba (Arabic for “catastrophe”), in which more than 700, 000 Palestinians became refugees due to the 1948 creation of the state of Israel. Bloch affectingly injects her own emotional wounds into the narrative as she reveals how she was raised to hate Germans and Palestinians, and attempts to square those alarming feelings in chats with her interview subjects, which include activists, academics, artists, other psychoanalysts and a former neo-Nazi. The filmmaker’s probing journey, which takes her to Berlin, Haifa, Jerusalem and elsewhere, presents few easy questions or answers. Some testimony here may rankle certain viewers, despite ? or because of ? Bloch’s attempt at evenhandedness. No matter, it’s a timely and essential portrait.
