It hailed from an exciting writer/director, had an A-list cast, scored six Oscar nominations, and grossed over $200 million. And yet it still feels like this adaptation is underrated. Fresh off of landing Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay for her 2017 film Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig set about writing a new adaptation of Louisa May Alcott ’s classic Little Women. Those unfamiliar with the source material may see the period costumes and title and shrug it off as a stuffy historical drama with little to no importance as it relates to the modern world. Those people are wrong, and in her 2019 adaptation Gerwig basically offers a masterclass in how Little Women is a timeless story about youth, about expectation vs. reality, and yes, about women. Image via Sony Pictures The film, which is currently available on Digital HD and was released on Blu-ray and DVD today, threads in aspects of Alcott’s real life, and as Gerwig explains on the bonus features she was so inspired by just how interesting Alcott’s actual life was that she decided to put it into the movie. We watch as Jo March ( Saoirse Ronan) sets about writing a story of her own experiences. That story goes through the negotiation process to be published, and the settlement that Jo agrees upon is the very settlement that Alcott made in getting Little Women first published in 1868. Indeed, the bonus features on the home video release only further confirm that Greta Gerwig is a storytelling genius. She speaks passionately about not just wanting her Little Women to feel modern, but how she set about making that so through costuming, through overlapping dialogue, and through recontextualizing the story. Watching her work on set with the actors, and watching the ensemble cast delight in collaborating with Gerwig, really showcases how special this particular filmmaking experience was. It’s easy to see how the movie turned out so well. It comes across onscreen, too. The casting is impeccable, as Florence Pugh brings heretofore unknown shades to the much-hated character of Amy March, while Emma Watson and Laura Dern and Eliza Scanlen embody the diversity of feminism, underlining the fact that there is no one right way to be a fulfilled and complex woman in the world. And is there anyone better to play Laurie than Timothee Chalamet??The actor speaks on the bonus features of how Laurie’s non-threatening masculinity compliments the March sisters well, and indeed Gerwig explains how Laurie and Jo are essentially gender-flipped versions of one another?to the point that she shows the characters wearing each other’s clothes throughout the film. That’s to say nothing of the movie’s narrative complexity, as Gerwig blurs the lines between the past and the present, creating a juxtaposition between the boundless opportunity of youth and the harsh reality of adulthood. It’s a stroke of brilliance (one of many), and Gerwig explains in the bonus features how with this adaptation, she really wanted to shine a light on the Little Women characters as adults. Seeing who they actually grow up to be vs. who they thought they would grow up to be when they were kids. It’s heartbreaking and life-affirming all at once, seeing how things work out and how the strong-willed March sisters navigate their way through life with a steadfastness and compassion that was instilled in them at a young age. What I’m saying is Little Women is great. Not just a great adaptation. Not just a great “chick flick. ” It’s a genuinely great film?one of the best of 2019 and likely one of the best of the 2010s when all is said and done. And with the film now available on all home video formats, what better time to either finally check it our or revisit it over and over again?

Reshuffling the plot is a way of making “Little Women” more cinematic without resorting to tricks or gimmicks. As much as “ The Irishman ” or “ Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, ” this is a film that tackles the mysteries of time. Laurie, as the sisters call him, seems at times more like a fifth March sister or an untrained puppy than like boyfriend material. He can’t even sit properly in a chair! Meg, by consensus the prettiest of the four, falls for Laurie’s tutor (James Norton), which means that her wedding vow is also a vow of poverty. The more practical-minded Amy, counseled by Aunt March, grasps the economic implications of marriage. Jo, who catches the eye of both Laurie and a certain Professor Bhaer (Louis Garrel), might prefer not to marry at all. The question of freedom ? in particular of a woman’s independence in a society that is both liberal and governed by tradition ? is threaded through nearly every scene. “I’ve been angry every day of my life, ” Mrs. March says matter-of-factly, and while “Little Women” is full of silliness and sorrow, sweetness and warmth, it doesn’t minimize or apologize for that anger. Nor does it mock or marginalize the March family’s commitment to social justice, civic responsibility and artistic excellence. The literary critics who know these things say that "Little Women" the novel (1868) broke new ground in giving women and especially young women an entirely new set of role models to read about that went beyond the conventional domestic ones. What better way to show that than to follow the stories of four sisters who all follow very different arcs and yet love each other intensely. It's been given several movie and TV renditions already, so what more is left to do? The answer is here in Greta Gerwig's new film. It's "adapted" from the book but the differences are fairly small, as far as I can tell. It's a masterpiece. The thing that struck me most was the beautiful, seamless flow of the storytelling. Rather than telling the story in a linear way, it steps back and forth in time over the critical 7-year period when Jo, Amy, Meg, and Beth are growing from girls into women and meeting their various, very different paths in life. It's never rushed but there's not a wasted minute either. It's all backed by wonderful period scenery in Concord, Massachusetts, and meticulously recreated settings: the housing, clothing, transportation, conversations, all spring to life so thoroughly and yet without calling attention to themselves. And the cast: Saoirse Ronan (Jo. the surrogate for author Louisa May Alcott) is outstanding. Emma Watson (Meg, the oldest) is outstanding. Florence Pugh (Amy) is outstanding. Although Jo is the heart and center of the story, all three of them have major scenes that give us insights into the different difficulties faced by young women 150 years ago. Eliza Scanlen (Beth) has a bit less to do, but she's very affecting as well. Representing the older generation, the great Laura Dern (Marmee) and Chris Cooper (Mr. Laurence) are beyond outstanding. They disappear so completely into their character roles that we are not even aware that they are acting. These two are among the top screen actors we have but (IMO) are terribly underused. (NB: when Dern and Ronan are together they uncannily look like mother and daughter.) Add in of course Meryl Streep (the rich, imposing Aunt March) and Bob Odenkirk (Father) and we have a top-drawer cast from end to end. For the ongoing love interest, Timothee Chalamet plays Laurie, who's consistently very interesting as he comes in and out of the plot but is ultimately somewhat elusive: who is, he, really? We are left not quite knowing. I give this 10/10 not just because it's all well done, but essentially because I can't think of any way it could have been better. Previous knowledge of the book will help, but the movie stands as a work of art on its own. Little Women is a masterful achievement by Greta Gerwig and her powerhouse troupe of actors. It could be nominated for any number of Oscars, from directing to acting to set design to costuming to scripting, and I expect it will be. It's an absolutely complete and absorbing piece of cinema.

Film begins 2/3 into the story and then does flash backs and flash forwards with out rhyme or reason. Story line is impossible to follow. Meg is fighting with her husband before she meets him and Beth comes back into the story line after she dies several times. Who can tell where Jo is; in New York or Concord. There was no regard for the story line as created by Miss Alcott. The flash backs are not explained and come and go with out notice. There is no way to know what point you are at in the story or weather it is a flash back or flash forward. It is all there and beautifully done but scrambled into a confusing mess. I love Little Women and have read the book dozens of times and seen every movie version many times and loved them all. But not this one. It appears as if the film editor chopped up the film threw it on the floor and picked up the pieces at random and pasted them together how every they landed in no reasonable order. The actors and Miss Alcott deserved better. I went with a group of friends. Several had read the book as a child and several had never read the book or seen a movie of it. They all said it was confusing, long and boring and the plot made no sense. As for me I spent my time trying to figure out where we were in the story instead of enjoying one of the greatest literary story on the screen. If it had been told in order as written by Alcott this would be the best film version to date. Instead it is a boring crazy quilt of beautiful pictures. So very disappointed. At no time did the actors faces change over the course of the years that passed, leaving it to the viewer to figure it out with clothing and hairstyles. I would imagine this would be confusing for some audience members not familiar with the story. For me, it just kept me from enjoying the more intimate moment's as the film was flashing back and forth arting near the end, going to the beginning then jumping to the middle... I didn't even get misty eyed about Then there were odd casting decisions. Amy, played by a fine actress, looked 20 yrs old throughout the ENTIRE looked 20 at age 12 and she looked 20 7 yrs was jarring. Teddy/Laurie, please, he also looked the same age, and even a bit younger than his years when he eventually gets married. Looked like a teenage boy the entire time, seriously nothing manly came that might be the writing which made all the men move to the very background of this production. Possible spoilers. According to IMDb there are more than 20 versions of Louisa May Alcott’s 2 volume tale, not including various TV series adaptations. Of all those I’ve seen exactly one, the 1994 version starring very young cast including Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes, Christian Bale and others. I don’t remember much about it beyond the basic story. Nor have I read the books. So this is somewhat new territory for me. As a man in a theater full of women, young and old, I was quickly mesmerized at first by the wonderful pictures of the Massachusetts country side to the sets and costume, then by the actors and the wonderful direction by Gretta Gerwig. It is Gerwig’s direction and adapted screenplay that surely motivates the excellent award-worthy cast including Laura Dern as Marmee, the mother of the March family, Meryl Streep as Aunt March, Chris Cooper as wealthy neighbor Mr. Laurence and Tracy Letts as New York City book publisher, Mr. Dashwood. All supporting roles and all worthy of recognition. The film opens with a shot a woman’s back sitting across the desk of Dashwood. The woman is making a pitch for him to buy her short story. As the camera swings around we see that is Jo March (Saoise Ronan), with ink-stained fingers. The publisher offers her $20 but wants her to shorten it and offer an ending that has the female subject of the story either marry or be dead at the end. Jo agrees and is now a professional writer. What Gerwig has also done is create an alter ego for LM Alcott herself and offer what will be a perfect bookend to this scene some 2-hours later. The scene then dissolves to an earlier time back in Massachusetts. The Civil War is coming to an end. Marmee and housekeeper Hannah (Jayne Houdyshell) manage the home that includes 4 rambunctious sisters. The father (Bob Odenkirk) is a medical doctor away in Washington, D. C. attending to the wounded soldiers returning home. Of the sisters Meg (Emma Watson) is the oldest, followed by Jo, Amy (Florence Pugh, “Midsommar”) and Beth (Eliza Scanlen, HBO’s “Sharp Objects”). Gerwig, who essentially meshes LMA’s volume 1 which features the little women as girls with volume 2 which shows them as adults by swinging back in forth in time. It can be a bit disorienting at first as there are no regular intertitles to alert you. So pay attention! This puts the emphasis on the actors and costume designers to distinguish the transitions. The actors do a great job showing the differences between a 20-something adult and a teenager. This is perhaps most noticeable in Pugh as Amy. Her personality as a fun-loving wannabe artist changes dramatically as a more serious and aware adult. Each of the 4 actresses get their moments. Young Beth has a great scene with Mr. Lawrence after he gives her a piano. Amy in a scene with Jo tells her in a delicate but firm discussion that she wants to be married and have children. And that is just as important to her as Jo’s desire to be free, both from a supposed heavy handed husband and her desire to write. Jo and Amy are more alike than not. After a disagreement about attending a local play, Amy hurts Jo in an unforgiveable way. The scene plays out in a heartfelt performance by both. But it is Ronan’s Jo that is the cornerstone of the story. And wow is she good. As in, perhaps the best actress of her generation. She draws you in. Jo is at times irreverent but it is more moxie than anything. She doesn’t want to rely on anyone. She wants to be a success with her words and will let nothing get in the way. That includes Mr. Lawrence’s flirty grandson, Theodore ‘Laurie’ Laurence (Timothee Chalamet, who starred with Ronan in Gerwig’s first film, “Lady Bird). Jo is the only one who calls him Teddy. Chalamet is also excellent as he goes from a fun loving companion for Jo to a more serious man looking for love with another sister. The film is funny, sad and dramatic and somehow Gerwig has also created a modern slant to this early version of feminism. I can honestly say the way the Director shot the movie was outstanding, the acting was exceptional and the I can tell you, I can’t stop rewatching and reliving in my head! It was beyond magical! I loved the new movie because it made Amy into a real character. She's always been the one I identify the most with, so it makes me sad when people hate her. I understand what it's like to be the bratty one in the family, and want everything your sister has. The scene where she burns the pages because Jo left her could literally be a scene from my life (albeit one I'm not proud of) and I've felt the hurt of having your sister care about a thing more than you. Amy ends up getting everything her sister had, but my interpretation of that was a bit different from yours. With a lot of the subtext, I felt like Laurie didn't really love her that much, but she wanted so badly to be happy and have him that she ignored it. Amy gets what she wants, but she understands that by the time she does, it's often hollow or meaningless. But I don't know, that could just be me projecting onto her. Anyway, great analysis for a great movie. Keep up the good work.
