For some context these last years people have been extremely vocal and critical about the regime on social media and this sentiment has been growing, it went unchecked out of fear of some sort of arab spring if they start silencing people. But here comes the troubling part, they have just passed a law in like 2 days to preserve freedom of speech with a vague UNLESS part that could pretty much cover anything they disagree with. These last days, they've been arresting people who post on social media and youtube left and right for 'FAKE NEWS', some of them are actually spreading fake news. But most of them haven't said anything harmful, or that would otherwise incite panic, and are just talking about the issue and giving their opinions or simply making innocent jokes. People here don't see the slippery slope we're currently in, most of the time they just swallow whatever excuse they're told, which make it hard for people who are aware of this stuff like me to enact any changes because most of the population is neutral or ok with this as they don't really see the big picture nor understand the long term consequences. Now at least there are tools to keep my anonymity online while i post this in here, but what you don't realize is that the us government is planning on eradicating encryption, which could absolutely kill any last hope of privacy, especially for people in some parts of the world like my country against oppressing regimes. You guys right now are the same as people in my country, you're being exploited and conned into passing laws that absolutely destroy your privacy and freedoms by always using some boogeyman, be it fake news, catching terrorists, pedophiles or criminals... and all kind of other excuses. But catching one person doesn't mean needing to breach the privacy of 7 billions people, this is a play on your freedom of thought and freedom of speech in the long run. Most people think it is just what it is, but at least in the us you have a say and can actually affect change, if you oppose it enough and you press enough you have a chance to stop this madness and by proxy you give a fighting chance to most parts of the world because they follow the us most of the time. Your freedom of expression and free thought is being eroded under your nose right now during this time of panic with a bill that would basically kill encryption and thus privacy for the entire world, please don't let us down, act now.
