It hasn't been a good run for movies about the media in recent memory, particularly as such offerings pertain to the late Roger Ailes, the man behind the rise of Fox News.? Exhibit A is "Bombshell. the story of a group of women, including Nicole Kidman's turn as Gretchen Carlson and Charlize Theron's as Megyn Kelly, taking on the late Fox News chairman and CEO in what, on paper, looked to be a sure-fire hit for the A-list cast alone. In addition to Kidman and Theron, the movie offers arguably the most-coveted actress in Hollywood right now in Margot Robbie and veteran award-winner John Lithgow as Ailes. Couple in the backdrop of the #MeToo era, and surely the movie would easily eclipse the film's budget of 33 million, right?? Wrong.? Breaking News: Bombshell. which should be leaving most theaters in short order after premiering nationwide on December 20, has generated only 15. 6 million at the box office as of December 29. That's not even half of what the movie cost to be made.? Reviews for the film have been mixed, with a 67 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes out of a possible 100. Not great, like Adam Sandler's "Uncut Gems" 92 percent rating) not completely horrible, like "Cats" 20 percent rating. Yet, given the cast and hype, a disappointment from a critical perspective and a movie that clearly has not benefited from positive word of mouth.? Not especially, particularly when considering how Ailes-themed movies and documentaries have fared in the recent past. Exhibit B is "Divide and Conquer. which hit the big- and small-screen last year. Never heard of it, you say? You're not the only one. In December 2018, the movie grossed less than 40, 000 at the box office. The documentary also fared poorly on cable channel A&E weeks later, delivering just 228, 000 total viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research. For context, HBO's Michael Jackson documentary, Leaving Neverland. was watched by 1. 3 million in the same time slot and notched 663, 000 viewers in the 25-54 year-old demographic, even though it was on a pay-TV channel. Exhibit C: Earlier this year, there was another Ailes offering in the form of Oscar-winner Russell Crowe portraying Ailes in Showtime's adaptation of Gabriel Sherman's book, The Loudest Voice in the Room: How the Brilliant, Bombastic Roger Ailes Built Fox News ? and Divided a Country. That took in just 299, 000 viewers for its premiere. For context, HBO's "Big Little Lies" ironically, starring Kidman)?aired in the same timeslot and delivered 1. 605 million viewers. Add it all up, and it appears that there isn't much interest in the downfall of Ailes. One reason: We all read the reports of his swift demise after Gretchen Carlson's July 2016 lawsuit against Ailes, which led to his resignation less than three weeks later following an internal investigation by the outside law firm Paul, Weiss. From there, Alies' alleged exploits were covered extensively and in detail. Translation: The story arc and conclusion arent a surprise or a secret. One has to wonder when other #MeToo-era movies about other major media figures will be made, given all the options available. How about a feature film on Harvey Weinstein, and Ronan Farrow's relentless effort to get that story to print after it got killed by NBC, according to Farrow. NBC staunchly denies the claim. Sounds like an interesting story, possibly starring Harvey Fierstein and Tom Felton, no? The new film Bombshell, which recently snagged two Golden Globe and four SAG Awards nominations, tells the true story of the sexual harassment scandal that took down Roger Ailes, the head of Fox News and a kingmaker in the Republican party. Ailes was an imposing personality: He advised right-leaning politicians, including Richard Nixon and Donald Trump, and was said to employ fear tactics in running his business. Ex-employees have said he installed secret surveillance cameras around Fox News offices. In 2016, a sexual harassment lawsuit brought against Ailes by former Fox journalist Gretchen Carlson kickstarted an internal investigation at the news network and, eventually, a wave of sexual harassment claims against Ailes. Megyn Kelly, at the time the rising star at the network, was among the women to report experiencing harassment at the hands of the network head. In total, more than 20 women accused Ailes, and he was forced to resign from his position in July of that year. He died a year later, at 77. In Bombshell, which opens nationwide Dec. 20, Nicole Kidman plays Carlson, who, after filing her suit, largely watches and waits on the sidelines hoping that other women at Fox will bolster her credibility with their own claims. Gretchen Carlson and others accused Roger Ailes of sexual harassment In 2014 then- New York Magazine writer Gabriel Sherman published a biography of Roger Ailes called The Loudest Voice in the Room. In the book, an unnamed female producer alleged that Ailes, while he was at NBC, had offered her an additional 100 per week if she agreed to “have sex with me whenever I want. ” In 2016, former Fox & Friends cohost Gretchen Carlson accused Ailes of “severe and persistent sexual harassment” and of tanking her career by docking her pay and, as shown in the movie, moving her shows to lower-profile time slots after she refused his advances. Carlson said in her suit that when she confronted the Fox News head about his treatment of her, he responded, “I think you and I should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago and then youd be good and better and Id be good and better. ” Eventually, she was fired. Ailes denied the accusations and claimed that he let go of Carlson because of her shows poor ratings. Fox News covered up sexual harassment claims When Carlson took her job at Fox News, she signed a non-disclosure agreement and a mandatory arbitration agreement that barred her from talking about her experiences publicly and forced her to take legal disputes into arbitration rather than to open court. In a TIME cover story, Carlson spoke about how corporations strategically deploy NDAs and mandatory arbitration clauses to cover up rampant sexual harassment. Even when women risk the professional consequences by coming forward with claims of abuse, these legal maneuvers ensure that bad behavior will remain a secret, allowing perpetrators to remain in power. As more women came forward with sexual harassment claims against Ailes, OReilly and other powerful men at Fox News, it became clear that dozens of women had experienced misogyny and worse at the network. Fox News, for instance, had agreed to settle a sexual harassment suit against OReilly for a whopping 32 million?and then decided to renew his contract. Ailes fought to protect himself and other powerful men at the network while women who worked there had little recourse for their mistreatment. Lachlan and James Murdoch greenlit the internal investigation of Ailes There was no love lost between Ailes and Rupert Murdochs sons, Lachlan and James (played by real-life brothers Ben Lawson and Josh Lawson in the movie. Lachlan had clashed with Ailes on Fox News content in 2005 and left for Australia when his father sided with Ailes. And after a company shake-up in 2015, Ailes was reportedly unhappy about the fact that he was forced to report to Lachlan and James rather than Rupert himself. Since then, James had become the CEO of 21st Century Fox, and Lachlan executive co-chairman of Fox. The brothers were attending the Sun Valley Conference, an annual gathering of the rich and powerful, when the news of Carlsons suit broke. With their father absent, the brothers consulted in-house counsel and decided to conduct an internal investigation into the sexual harassment claims. They hired the firm Paul, Weiss to conduct the investigation. Commentators have speculated on the sons motivation for this decision?perhaps they still felt burned from a phone-hacking scandal in Britain that had blown up in Rupert Murdochs face. Perhaps they wanted to get out in front of another scandal. Perhaps they knew that an investigation into Ailes would turn up dirt: His boorish and sexist behavior at the company was notorious. Perhaps they saw an opportunity to dispatch with one of their greatest rivals in the company. Ailes consulted with Rudy Giuliani and Susan Estrich After news of the suit broke, Ailes solicited help from former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani (played by Richard Kind) who was then acting as a legal consultant. (Ailes had acted as Guilianis media advisor during his 1989 mayoral campaign, and Giuliani, in turn, had officiated Ailes third wedding. Giuliani became Ailes representative during the internal investigation. In a strange turn of events, feminist legal scholar Susan Estrich (played by Allison Janney) also joined Roger Ailes legal team. Estrich had revolutionized the legal systems approach to rape cases: She criticized the fact that “acquaintance rape”?rape by a friend or spouse?was considered less extreme than other types of rape and lambasted the courts and the media for treating survivors as “nuts and sluts. ” But Estrich was a longtime personal friend of Ailes and often appeared as a talking head on Fox News, usually arguing the liberal side of a days given debate. It would not be the last time a renowned feminist lawyer defended a man accused of monstrous acts against women. Roger Ailes wife launched a campaign to protect her husband The week the lawsuit dropped, Roger Ailes wife, Beth Ailes (played in Bombshell by Connie Britton) contacted Kimberly Guilfoyle, a Fox News co-host, to help marshal support at the network for the Fox News head, according to Vanity Fair. In the movie, Guilfoyle (now Donald Trump Jr. s girlfriend) is portrayed distributing pro-Ailes t-shirts, demanding that women around the office put them on. (She reportedly left Fox herself in 2018 after allegations of sexual misconduct, which she subsequently denied, were made against her. ) Other women at Fox spoke out on Ailes behalf, including Greta Van Susteren (Anne Ramsay) and Jeanine Pirro (Alanna Ubach) who both hosted their own shows on the network. In the movie we see Pirro confront Kelly at the snack machine, though this is likely fictionalized. Megyn Kelly, meanwhile, remained conspicuously silent, as depicted in the movie. Beth Ailes also reached out to Kelly, but Kelly claimed she could not speak out about the situation until the investigation was over. Christy Lemire December 13, 2019 “ Bombshell ” depicts, with equal parts bemusement and outrage, the explosion that occurred when the women of Fox News Channel dared to expose the culture of sexual harassment that had prevailed for so long at the cable television juggernaut. More than a year before allegations of abuse and harassment against Harvey Weinstein would spark the #MeToo movement and crater his career, there was Roger Ailes, the fearsome TV news titan whose personal empire came crumbling down. Director Jay Roach s film follows those fraught days during the summer of 2016, when “Fox & Friends” morning show co-host Gretchen Carlson filed a lawsuit against the former Fox News CEO and Megyn Kelly?the networks biggest star at that point?came forward with Ailes harassment tales of her own. Advertisement Its all weighty, serious material with huge stakes?emotionally, culturally and financially. But Roach, working from a script by Charles Randolph, finds a tricky balance of portraying these events with a sprightly tone while crafting a steadily building tension. “ Bombshell ” is both light on its feet and a punch in the gut. This is familiar territory for both: Roach is the Emmy-winning director of “ Game Change, ” about Sarah Palins rise to prominence as John McCains running mate in the 2008 Republican presidential election. Randolph is the Oscar-winning co-writer of “ The Big Short, ” which got its arms around the complicated topic of the 2008 recession by presenting it in amusingly inspired and easy-to-understand ways. “ Bombshell ” combines elements of both: the dead-on depictions of famous media and political figures and some playful fourth-wall breaking to bring us behind the scenes of this insular?and infamously paranoid?world. The person to pull the curtain aside and invite us in is Charlize Theron as Kelly, embodying the anchor with eerie accuracy from the first moment we see her. In no time at all, you truly feel as if youre watching Kelly herself, and the fact that shes doing an extended walk-and-talk to explain the inner workings of the conservative news network accomplishes a couple of crucial things right off the top. Kelly shares in conspiratorial tones who the players are, how the power structure operates and what people must do to survive?especially if they want those coveted spots on air. But by talking directly to us, much of the time with a wink and a smile, Theron also softens Kellys icy, rigid persona, making her more sympathetic and accessible. So complete is the transformation, Theron quickly makes you forget that youre watching an actress playing Megyn Kelly. But this is no gimmick. Its a miracle of makeup design, sure?the cheekbones and the turned-up nose, with eyeliner and thick, fake lashes doing much of the heavy lifting to complete the look. And Theron brilliantly captures the tone and inflection of Kellys voice?the distinctive rhythm, the deep richness and the selective, seductive breathiness. But more importantly, she gets Kellys essence, her toughness and her need to assert herself as authoritative and unflappable at all times. Maintaining such radiant confidence becomes an increasing challenge for Kelly once Carlson ( Nicole Kidman, conveying both on-air sweetness and off-air ambition) brings her lawsuit against Ailes ( John Lithgow, also undergoing a significant physical transformation. This is a great, showy role for Lithgow, giving him plenty of room to show his range as he portrays the profane, predatory and paranoid sides of the portly executives personality. And as other high-profile women come forward with vocal support of Ailes, Kellys silence becomes even more conspicuous. In the midst of all this, an ingénue rises: a young woman whos beautiful, blonde and anxious to be a television star, just like Kelly and Carlson?only shes about a generation younger. Margot Robbie shines in the role of Kayla, a rare character whos not based on an actual person but rather a composite of various network employees who suffered through Ailes lewd advances. The ever-magnetic Robbie gets a dramatic arc to play, going from wide-eyed true believer (“I see myself as an influencer in the Jesus space, ” she says with total sincerity while pitching herself for a position) to disillusioned whistle-blower. She also gets the most deeply uncomfortable scene in the film, as we see Kayla endure an agonizing meeting with Ailes in which he asks her to stand and hike up her black dress higher and higher. Robbie makes the characters vulnerability and fear palpable, and Roach treats the pain of the moment with decency. Also during the summer of 2016 ? and yes, it really does feel like a lifetime ago - Donald Trump is rising to power as the Republican presidential nominee, and his trajectory is becoming intrinsically intertwined with that of his favorite TV news channel. “All Trump does is watch Fox, ” says Rob Delaney as Kellys producer. And so Kellys clash with Trump as debate moderator?based on a question she asked him about his treatment of women over the years?further makes her a target and heightens the kind of scrutiny and misogyny she and so many women face when they tell their stories of abuse and harassment. “ Bombshell ” tries to encompass all of that for context, and it does so with an intermittent, quasi-documentary style that doesnt always work. Roach includes actual footage?and sometimes seamlessly inserts his actors into the images?but he also employs hand-held camerawork and snap-zooms as if he were directing an episode of “The Office, ” and the approach feels inconsistent and a little jarring. But the performances are always compelling, from the lead actresses doing top-notch work?especially in a scene in which they all share an awkward elevator ride, silently?to the supporting players down the line. Some of the performances are startlingly dead-on, like Alanna Ubach s Jeanine Pirro and Allison Janney s Susan Estrich. For one fantastic, fleeting second, you will believe that Kevin Dorff is Bill OReilly. Others dont quite hit the mark, but the whole newsroom culture comes vividly to life, both through production design and the kind of gallows humor that keeps journalists sane during the worst of times. Along these lines, Kate McKinnon comes hilariously to the rescue as a closeted lesbian producer on OReillys primetime show and the voice of reason who explains to Kayla the simple guidelines for suggesting segment ideas: “Frighten, titillate. Frighten, titillate. ” And the great costume designer Colleen Atwood deserves special attention for getting the all-important Fox News anchor wardrobe just right. An array of form-fitting, jewel-toned sheath dresses and painfully high heels is meant to convey just the right mix of trustworthiness and sex appeal. And the hemlines can never be too short: As Ailes himself repeatedly insists, this is a visual medium. But a peek inside the wardrobe closet reveals the discomfort these women endure in the name of ambition, and the objectification theyre willing to endure for fame. “ Bombshell ” may not change anyones minds?especially not those viewers who, as the film points out, have the Fox News logo burned into the bottom corner of their TV screens because they never change the channel. I hoped they would cast someone as the black who later sued Bill O'Reilly. (CNN) Bombshell" lands as the year's second expose on Fox News under Roger Ailes, following the Showtime miniseries "The Loudest Voice. The two work quite well viewed in tandem, with the latter focusing on the late Fox News mastermind, while this well-made, entertaining movie zeroes in on the women who finally toppled him at what was, arguably, the apex of his power and influence. Granted, Bombshell" might have been better served by a premium-TV showcase as well, since the behind-the-curtain peek at media and politics has all the trappings of an HBO movie. Nor does it feel like an accident that Jay Roach, working from a script by Charles Randolph, has directed a number of those films, including "All the Way. Game Change" and "Recount. The backstage aspect of "Bombshell" is clearly media catnip, as evidenced by the wave of coverage for "The Morning Show. the Apple TV+ series that also delves into the high-powered machinations of TV news, and not incidentally, sexual misconduct. Whether broader audiences will be equally captivated by the subject matter. to the tune of actually buying tickets. could be another matter. Setting questions about the platform aside, Bombshell" filters Ailes' downfall through the experiences of three women: Megyn Kelly (Charlize Theron) the standout anchor; Gretchen Carlson (Nicole Kidman) a star in decline at the network, who finally chose to publicly take legal action against Ailes (John Lithgow) and Kayla (Margot Robbie) in the movie's most conspicuous cheat, a composite character, standing in for all the ambitious young women who Ailes asked to prove their "loyalty. Although not the key figure in the Ailes drama, Kelly becomes the centerpiece of the story, thanks in large part to the uncanny performance by Theron, who captures the tenor of her voice and manner while still emerging as a flesh-and-blood figure. This film doesn't hold lots of cinematic values to appreciate, It's more like a journal article read in pictures about an important story and I'm really glad this film exists. I saw a screening of this movie last week. Charlize Theron's portrayal was spot on, her voice sounded exactly like Megyn Kelly. Aside from that, all the performances were amazing! Margot Robbie was also phenomenal, the scene with her talking outside a restaurant totally made me feel for her character. The 3 of them together in one movie-thats a real bonus.
