In short, The Kindness of Stranger s is about a young woman wandering in New York City with no money, nowhere to go, nobody to help her with two small boys in tow. Her resultant, continuing interactions with a whole cast of strangers forms the storyline. Her desperate, determined continuous search for her boys safety, and her own, motivates her to keep running with no resources in a tough dark New York City. Sleeping in her car and then on the streets she has to rely on many kindnesses to navigate the treacherous shoals of her new home, in an enthralling narrative that sees various people drift in and out of her life. It is a story of interconnected lives set during a New York City winter. The thoughtfully considered cast of characters includes nurse and social activist Alice (Andrea Roseborough) ex-con Marc (Tahar Rahim) who is slowly rebuilding his life working in a Russian restaurant run by Timofey (Bill Nighy) Marcs pro-bono lawyer John (Jay Baruchel) and Jeff (Caleb Landry Jones) who volunteers in Alices soup kitchen. Kazans luminous performance as Clara anchors this movie about terror in the mean dark city and the will to survive from Lone Scherfig, the director of Italian for Beginners (2002) and An Education (2009. People who were strangers at first but?became friends because they took the time to talk with us, theyve helped us in so many ways and showed us their kind nature. Nothing in the world beats the feeling of gratitude when a complete stranger shows you kindness. Well always remember them, they have made their way into our hearts! One morning I went to get my coffee before work and the gentlemman before me paid for it so I paid for the person behind me and apparently that went on for awhile, according to the cashier who told me the next day. The thumbnail works. It was hot, really hot, really, really hot. It was the kind of day that race directors and veteran marathon runners dread, and which new runners ignore as they chase their dreams. Trouble wasnt brewing; it was boiling. I ran the first few miles of the marathon just to see what it was like, then stepped off the course and took a shortcut to the end. For the next two and a half hours I watched the finishers. The strong came across humbled, the weak in shock. Both those who were prepared, and those who werent, finished with a new respect for what the sun can do to the human body. By the time the race clock passed the five-hour mark, Id seen all I could stand. Each image was burned into my memory. I didnt need any more reminders of my own indiscretions, of the times I had let my ego overcome my senses, of the times I had sacrificed my body just so I could say Id finished. Somewhere around mile 24, as I walked back to the hotel, I came upon a runner still out on the course. He looked at the water bottle in my hand, held out the small cup he was clutching, and gasped, “Would you mind? ” I started to fill his cup, then instinctively handed him the bottle. He thanked me softly, and kept running. I dont know what the last two miles of his race were like, but Im fairly sure they werent pretty. It was a simple act of kindness on my part ? nothing more than the recognition that, at that moment, his thirst outweighed my own. His need exceeded mine, and I had the means and the opportunity to help. It was also nothing less than the profound revelation that in hundreds of races there had been thousands of volunteers who had done the same for me. It was an epiphany. Until that moment, I had been sure that this sport was about us, the participants. I had permitted myself the utter arrogance of believing that it was our being out there that made running so great, and that it was my training, my determination and my talent that made me a runner. But, in one instant, I knew better. What actually makes this sport so great are the acts of kindness performed by untold numbers of people ? from race directors to sponsors, volunteers to spectators. Its those individual and collective acts of selflessness that allow us to realise our dreams. All the training, all the equipment and all the streets in the world would be useless without them. I wonder who these people are. What kind of person stands for hours at a water table handing cups to unknown and often unappreciative runners? What kind of person stands all day at the finish line to drape the medals round our necks? What kind of person believes enough in our dreams to help us make them come true? Whoever these people are, they are as much a part of what were doing as we are. I hope they see the gratitude in our faces. I hope they know we appreciate them even when were too dazed to show it, too out of breath to speak. Most of all I hope they feel the way I did when I handed over that bottle of water: secure in the knowledge that theyre making a difference to someones life. Waddle on, friends.

Oh i sometimes blow on my icecream. its a odd habit. The heartbreaking kindness of Tajik strangers. The Tajik border guards decided to let us in ahead of the Uzbek women pushing donkey carts full of vegetables. This wasnt outright kindness?they just wanted to try on our bicycle helmets. Backward, of course. They sent us off with three teacups of cherry juice. In order to actually enter Tajikistan, we had to ride in the dirt. The single-lane road into the country was being used for more important purposes, namely, drying grain for cattle feed. I liked this country already. Once inside, the mountains grew bigger by the day. We crossed two 11, 000-foot mountains, split down the middle millenniums ago, still revealing inner layers of rock. I started the descent of the second mountain only to be stopped dead in my tracks. Just beside the road were eight or 10 calves, munching on deep, green grass and lounging beside a river. It was too idyllic to pass up. The traffic was so sparse that I felt comfortable stripping down naked, taking a leisurely bath, washing all my clothes and air-drying my body while lounging with the cows. I continued the descent and found Mikey sitting in a natural shower in the same stream. (We werent too worried about getting separated. There arent a lot of spandex-wearing young Americans in Tajikistan. It was pretty easy to find each other. After a good bath, we descended 20 miles down to the Pyanj River, the border with Afghanistan. The natural scenery was the same, but now the mountains and roads were littered with old tanks, personnel carriers, mortars, trenches, and unambiguous signs to keep out of the minefields. The Pyanj is narrow enough that a good jump and a strong wind couldve carried us into Afghanistan, where the villages lacked electricity, and there wasnt even a road. All they had was a donkey trail clinging to the steep cliffs above the river. I was riding about 200 yards behind Cam on a 15-foot-wide gravel road when I noticed three men blocking our way, one in army fatigues. Cam was beyond them. I immediately got the sense that these men werent there to welcome us to Tajikistan. They didnt budge, so I sped up and headed straight for them. At the last second, they parted and one swung at me with a bag. He swung downward, luckily, instead of swinging right at my chest. He missed me and hit the tent draped over a rack above my back wheel. I stopped about 30 yards past them and waited for Mikey with Cam. Cam had pulled the exact same bull-rush move. When Mikey came around the corner and saw the three dudes blocking his way, he pedaled as hard as he could. I dont know what they wanted, but we had no plans for giving it to them. Later in the day, I was riding behind Mikey and Cam when two kids blocked my path and started yelling “ Deneg, deneg ” (money, money. It had worked once, so I headed straight for them. They parted, but one of the kids reared back to hit me with a long wire. It was too late to stop, so I kept coming, but he didnt swing. Instead, he grabbed onto my bike and I dragged him for 30 yards until I was sick of it, took his wire, and chased him with it. I dont know what he was thinking. I was twice his size. We continued warily on. I stopped to take a picture of a beautiful Afghan village built around a waterfall, but a car full of Russian soldiers stopped. (They were very white?unlike most Tajiks?and spoke Russian, whereas most Tajiks speak Tajik, which is closer to Persian. Russians dominate the upper echelon of the Tajik military and are often found along the Afghan border. They asked what I was doing. “Looking at Afghanistan. ” “You cant look at Afghanistan. ” “OK, I wont look at Afghanistan anymore. ” Any other response wouldve been a waste of time. We slept in an apricot orchard on a cliff above the Pyanj. The next morning was Cams birthday, so I cooked him breakfast-in-bag: fresh nan and apricots boiled down with sugar and loose tea. We packed up, and as I picked squashed apricots off my wheels, I discovered six cracks in my aluminum rim. Thats a trip-ender. Aluminum rims cant be welded, and the chance of finding a new wheel out here was slim to none. With little other choice, I decided to ride until I crashed. Knowing every pedal might be my last, I enjoyed every day that much more. We stopped for a break in a military town and asked the kids mulling around if they knew where we could get some nan. In 10 minutes, they brought back a huge, moldy piece of bread. Good one. They sensed our disappointment and brought two loaves of fresh nan. Next, apples. Then apricots. Then cherries. Then watermelon. Then biscuits. Then candy, each time touching their hearts, as is Central Asian custom. We asked how much they wanted for the feast, but they refused any money. Later that day, I saw a Russian man standing in the middle of the road smiling, so I stopped to chat. Within three minutes, I had exhausted my Russian, and we stood and smiled until the car he was waiting for arrived. A Niva (about the size of a Geo Metro) pulled up and out poured nine people?four adults and five kids?and a gigantic cake for my new friends wedding. He invited us to the ceremony and reception that night as honored guests. We bathed and washed our clothes in a lake and showed up that night. It was like coming home. They had us drunk on vodka within minutes. The traditional dance is a fantastic do-what-you-want-as-long-as-its-fun-and-youve-got-your-hands-in-the-air number. Mikey gave a speech: “Well, I dont really know too many of you. Actually, I dont know any of you. But you are all fantastic, and I love your country” is about all I remember. After the wedding festivities, it took two days, lots of hand gestures, a pack of preteens, and 5, but we finally located a crooked Chinese-built rim in Khorogs market. After a soft-serve feast for everybody involved, we headed back to the guesthouse to rebuild my wheels. We consulted the Internet to find out how to rebuild wheels. The advice was to take it to an expert wheel-builder. Big help. We took everything apart and cleaned it. I saw the end of my trip lying on the ground in assorted rims, hubs, and spokes. Using Mikeys wheel as an example, we slowly wove together and trued each one of the 72 spokes. The finished product was close enough to a wheel for me to ride it. We decided to split up. Mikey and Cam took the road through the Wakhan corridor, following Afghanistan, which was too littered with rocks for my rigged-up Chinese wheel to even attempt. I chose a road that would still destroy my fragile rims?but at least a bit more slowly. Meanwhile, my stomach felt like there was a man inside me giving Indian burns to my intestines. I went to the hospital. They said nothing would burst within the next couple of days but wrote down the name of a medicine I should get at the pharmacy. An orderly on his lunch break showed me the way. On the walk, he told me to drink my own urine. He used to have stomach problems but then he started drinking his own urine. He drank it every night for a year, and now, he said, he could eat my bicycle, if the need arose. The medicine at the pharmacy cost 18 somani, or about 7. I had only 12 to last me the 300 miles to Kyrgyzstan, so I hesitated. My pee-drinking pal didnt. Before I even knew what he was doing, he slapped 18 somani on the counter, took the medicine, and we were back on the street. I tried to pay him back, but he wouldnt let me.?A generous estimate of a Tajiks yearly income is 1, 000. That means this man, who had known me for 10 minutes, dropped two days wages to buy me medicine. He smiled, touched his heart, and wished me good luck.

A strange choice for Berlins opening night sees Bill Nighys funny Russian the only bright spot while an ensemble cast blunder through Lone Scherfigs baffling drama Not one for the showreel … Zoe Kazan and Tahar Rahim in The Kindness of Strangers. Photograph: Per Arnesen/Berlinale/EPA T he Berlin film festival gets off to the ropiest start with this inert, implausible, often bafflingly acted ensemble movie from Lone Scherfig about lonely souls who miraculously find each other in New York. Its what might be heart-sinkingly called a modern-day fairytale ? but the kind of modern-day fairytale that gets both halves of the equation wrong, giving you something twee and improbable, weighted down by a dreary yet unconvincing realism. There are some decent moments: Bill Nighy is often amusingly eccentric as Timofey, the Russian-American proprietor of a failing Manhattan restaurant, and he does have one very funny line as he serves some dishes to two diners and then, having turned to leave, wrongly assumes one of their intimately intense questions is addressed to him. And Zoe Kazan certainly pulls out all the emotional stops playing Clara, on the run with her two boys from a terrifyingly abusive cop husband. But the performance of Tahar Rahim, as Timofeys restaurant manager, really is not one for the showreel. Its one that he may now wish to have scrubbed from his IMDb credits. This is not his first English-language performance. But his line readings are mysterious. The American-accented English is challenging. He gives every appearance of not understanding a single word that comes out of his mouth. But then the direction is uneven generally, and the film itself sometimes appears to have been Google-translated from Danish via Welsh. Scherfig herself has directed some great English-language pictures, such as An Education and Their Finest, but the screenplay she has written here is uncertain. ‘Weve had this conversation! … Bill Nighy as Timofey. John Peter accompanies Marc to the forgiveness group therapy session at a local church, being run by ER nurse Alice (Andrea Riseborough) who does this in her spare time out of the goodness of her heart, though she is secretly hardly less unhappy than the regular attendees. Poor Clara is to come into contact with all these people as she flees her family home in Buffalo, New York and takes the kids to Manhattan, where she hopes her violent husband cant find them. They sleep in her car at night and during the day, while the kids are dozing in the public library, she forages by shoplifting and stealing leftover food on trays in hotel corridors. The film shows a civil court proceeding for child custody and then a criminal trial for assault lasting a painless month or so, passing in a very brisk montage. Meanwhile, the strangest and most jarringly unsuccessful character is Jeff (Caleb Landry Jones) an incorrigible guy who reacts to being fired from a mattress shop by throwing a swivel chair through a first-floor window. Is he supposed to have a creepy violent temper, like Claras husband? Evidently not. But if hes supposed to be a sympathetic free spirit, then I guess its pedantic and beside the point to care about who that chair might have landed on. The Kindness of Strangers is one of those terrible ideas for a film: ensemble dramas that are superficially attractive because of all the big names shoehorned into the cast-list. Its a bit like Fernando Meirelless awful film 360, which brings together a similar bunch of uninteresting characters made even more uninteresting by the tiresomely unreal way they are corralled together. And the film is furthermore naive about showing homelessness as a problem to be cured with romance. Still, Nighy has some fun with his wacky cod-Russian accent, arguing with his partners: “Please, Sergei! Weve had this conversation! ”.

Behind them was what remained of their house in Homs and the strange hybrid structure ? not quite a tent, but definitely not a house ? in a farmers field in Lebanon, where Mohammad had eked out a living for them for four years. Ahead: Canada. Thats all they knew. If Sahar didnt know much about Canada, she had heard things. The most important to her was that it was a peaceful country where her?children would be safe. After years of uncertainty, nothing mattered more. Mohammads concerns were more immediate. He was hoping, he says, for “somebody who spoke Arabic who could tell us where we were going. ” When the glass doors finally slid open at the airport in Kelowna, British Columbia, four Arabic-speaking interpreters greeted them, the first of a small army of sponsors and volunteers who had been preparing for their arrival for weeks. Mohammad and Sahar are privately sponsored refugees. That means a group of private citizens, approved by the Canadian Government, has offered to take on the costs and obligations that go with resettling the family. They also offer friendship. The process?is complicated, but Gioia Morris is a study in determination. Moved by “scenes of suffering on television, ” she quickly overcame the first and largest of the Governments requirements: finding at least four more Canadian adults willing to sign a financial guarantee. A mix of professional and business people, old and new friends, the group took only two meetings to decide to move ahead, says Duane Ophus, a city councilor who is among the sponsors. And they werent alone. “A movement. ” Thats what sponsor Greg Andreen calls the tsunami of support they have received. Friends and relative strangers volunteer time and sometimes money to help Mohammad, Sahar and the children adapt to their new surroundings. Too many stories for a short space, but some must be told. Housing is always a pressing concern for sponsorship groups. Size, proximity to the sponsors, affordability and safety are all factors. As the Syrian familys arrival drew near and no suitable accommodation could be found, sponsor Barb Andreen asked a friend if he would lend them his house. Gioia now says, “I thought … ‘Really? Who would do that? ” “In those days, they called me a refugee. ” Emil Dimitrov would. The swim coach gamely packed up his personal effects and moved into his own basement guest suite, where hes lived for the past two months. He knows what it means to start over. In 1990, en route from Bulgaria to a swim meet, Emil asked Canadian authorities for political asylum during a refueling stop in Gander, Newfoundland. “In those days, they called me a refugee, ” he says. “I found Zanie on an internet site, ” councillor Duane explains. Zanie Mollica had signed onto a volunteer page and mentioned that she spoke Arabic. She has been a fixture in the Syrian familys house since, as an interpreter and surrogate grandmother. “When Mohammad calls his parents, ” she says, “his mother asks me to look after them. ” If a sponsor found Zanie, Aziz Al-Hossain found the sponsors. The college classmate of a volunteers daughter, the young Saudi business student makes himself readily available as both a translator and interpreter. The goal of the sponsorship program is to help Mohammad and Sahar reach the day when they wont need help any longer. English conversations and bus schedules wont present the same challenges they do now. They will be able to talk to their childrens teachers without an interpreter. Its hard to imagine a day, however, when they wont lean on their sponsors and volunteers for the friendship that theyve offered. Or a day when the sponsors wont lean back.
Kindness of Strangers is one of those weird events that seldom happen in Real Life. It occurs when the hero is in trouble and suddenly gets help from a person whom he has never met before and whom he'll probably never meet again. It can be anything. Stranger can give the hero money if he really needs to buy a train ticket. Or he can give the hero the train ticket and say something like, Oh, I don't need it anyway. Please take it. Stranger can hide the hero in his basement for a few minutes. Or lend the hero a pair of trousers. It can be anything, any possible example of human kindness to the person the hero meets only once in his life. Author usually uses this trope to help hero in situation where these three conditions occur: Hero is in trouble and only another person can save him; Secondary characters are in the same trouble or another and can't help the hero; Story takes place in the area where there is high possibility of meeting other people (city, park, road, etc. Notably, Kindness of Strangers is not the trope used to introduce a new character. Also, one stranger does not aid the hero many times; that is the Mysterious Protector. Stranger does not give the hero any Unobtainium or mysterious advice or gifts; this would be the shop assistant in The Little Shop That Wasn't There Yesterday. Kindness of Stranger is usually "passive help" it does not involve aiding hero in his fight with bad guys/monsters. It is more similar to asking your neighbor to lend you a screwdriver.
