But I can't help feeling there is something a touch perverse about a rough theatre version of Rostand's romantic melodrama in a theatre the size of the Olivier: for once, I found myself craving a bit more colour and spectacle. The fact is that Rostand wrote his play in 1897 in reaction to the growing realism of Ibsen and Zola: "tendencies", he wrote, "which infuriated and revolted me". But here we get a stripped-down version of the play set roughly in Rostand's own time and staged in and around a massive William Dudley steel climbing-frame with two vast walkways extending over the stalls. It would, you feel, make an exciting design for West Side Story. But it has an oddly functional feel for a play that glories in rhetoric, rodomontade, swagger and swordplay. Derek Mahon's version also does everything to bring the play down to earth. It bulges with four-letter words, calculatedly anachronistic references to "Schnozzle" Durante, euros and breezeblocks and jokey improprieties. "The pompous windbag has a waist so thick, " says Cyrano of the detested Montfleury, "I doubt that he has ever seen his dick". Mahon's rhymes often click wittily into place and his language is full of demotic verve but when Roxane cries, "we've had too much of beauty" you feel she speaks as much for the translator as herself. Yet you can't suppress the play's inherent energy or the pathos of Cyrano's self-sacrificing love for Roxane. Howard Davies's production also fills the stage with hectic activity. There's a stirring moment, very well choreographed by Christopher Bruce, when we first see the Gascon cadets fencing and fighting like immaculate toy soldiers. This also gets its pay-off in the battle scenes when they become ragged, starving, wearily besieged figures who might almost be fighting on the Somme. Stephen Rea inhabits the title role with great skill. I'm not sure the text quite sustains his attempt to portray Cyrano as a truth-telling equivalent of Molière's Alceste. But Rea gives the rhymed lines a feeling of spontaneity and is infallibly moving in his proxy wooing of Roxane and in his final revelation of long-nurtured passion. Claire Price's duped Roxane, Zubin Varla's doltish Christian and Malcolm Storry's Machiavellian Count de Guiche also offer strongly defined performances in a deromanticised production in which Rostand finally wins out. ? One person’s tragic hero is another’s stubborn fool. One performer’s plumbing of the emotional depths is another’s wallowing in scenery-chewing excess. One audience member’s sigh of wistful contentment is another’s eye-roll of cynicism. Lots of plays try to balance on the fulcrum between suspending disbelief and give-me-a-break cynicism. But few do so as precariously as “Cyrano de Bergerac. ” Yes, Edmond Rostand’s swashbuckling story of the big-nosed articulate swordsman who woos the fair Roxane with words and letters on behalf of the handsome but tongue-tied Christian is a tale that tells us that beauty is only skin deep. But it’s also a story about altruism, about virtues and values and about opportunities that pass the barest of instants too late. It is, in short, a romantic tale carefully engineered to play to the emotions. The Guthrie Theater’s version, adapted and directed by artistic director Joseph Haj, paints in broad, unmistakable hues that occasionally feel gauche. Haj’s script hews relatively closely to Rostand’s original, consolidating characters here and there. But while Haj asserts in his program to have “strengthened some of the characters in meaningful ways, ” this telling ? both on the page and on the stage ? lionizes its title character at the expense of everyone else in the play. While it’s a choice that has the potential to heighten poignancy, it tends to render the story flat and two-dimensional. In the original, both Roxane and Christian come to their epiphanies late: Christian ruefully acknowledges that his physical attractiveness is no match for the beauty of Cyrano’s soul just before he perishes in battle. The lovely and intellectual Roxane learns the identity of her true love ? an amalgam of two individuals ? only as Cyrano dies, then mourns having loved one man and losing him twice. Jennie Greenberry and Robert Lenzi’s are appealing enough as Roxane and Christian. But neither ever really emerges from Cyrano’s shadow. Rather than characters with their own complications and challenges, they feel like composites of characters, collections of characteristics unbothered by consequence until the plot demands that they become so. Greenberry’s Roxane too often makes her ardor for the life of the mind seem like hauteur; Lenzi offers insufficient hints about the insecure awareness that lies beneath Christian’s pretty packaging. This leaves plenty of expressive room for Jay O. Sanders’s Cyrano, and he explores the range admirably. Sanders’ Cyrano brandishes wit with the same deadly accuracy as a rapier. Perhaps due to the (yes, truly gigantic) fake nose he wears, Sanders occasionally sounds a little like the old black-and-white film star W. C. Fields…another astute observer of the human condition with a prominent proboscis. But in a “Romeo and Juliet”-esque balcony scene in which Cyrano woos Roxane in darkness while pretending to be Christian, Sanders effectively sheds his character’s impenetrable armor of smug superiority. And, in a final death scene so lengthy that it threatens to become satire, Sanders’ Cyrano makes a moving final pitch for a life lived without compromise. It’s a rangy performance, but Sanders takes up so much of the oxygen on the stage that this “Cyrano” sometimes feels like a one-man tour de force instead of a story that chronicles how the most notable gifts of three individuals ? Cyrano’s excellent mind and articulate expression, Christian’s beauty, Roxane’s acuity ? can be their undoing. That irony is what makes “Cyrano de Bergerac” a tragedy laced with humor that resonates over time. But irony is a fine-edged tool too seldom employed in a too often blunt Guthrie staging. Guthrie Theater’s “Cyrano de Bergerac” When: Through May 5 Where: Guthrie Theater, 818 S. Second St., Minneapolis Tickets: $78-$29 Information: 612-377-2224 or Capsule: A staging as unbothered by nuance as its title character’s nose.

From: IMDb: France, 1640: Cyrano, the charismatic swordsman-poet with the absurd nose, hopelessly loves the beauteous Roxane; she, in turn, confesses to Cyrano her love for the handsome but tongue-tied Christian. The chivalrous Cyrano sets up with Christian an innocent deception, with tragic results. Much cut from the play, but dialogue not rewritten. comment Reviews Reviewer: Ffedarko - favorite favorite favorite favorite favorite - June 21, 2017 Subject: Cyrano Personified I have remained fascinated by Jose Ferrer's performance from the first time I saw this movie. His delivery of Rostand's sentiments was so natural in its articulation and emotional content that he didn't seem to be rendering a scripted dialog at all, especially during the duel at the theater. He so deserved his best performance award. The foibles of some of the rest of the cast were lost in the dazzle of the show Ferrer put on, although his brilliance could do nothing to hide the overhead microphone that popped into view during the portion of the duel on stage where Cyrano tossed the vicomte's epee into the air. I'm also surprised that, as something of a swashbuckler, the movie reportedly lost money. PeterHaas June 16, 2012 Correction: U. S. TrekkieMary favorite favorite favorite favorite - March 26, 2012 Very good play Jose Ferrer plays a great Cyrano. The movie stays true to the play for the most part. A must see. I downloaded the MPEG2 and had no problems burning it to DVD so I could view it on TV. The file is huge but the movie is worth it. The Garutso Balanced Lens is an insitu camera lens effectively simulating a faux 3D effect by keeping the foreground and background in focus at the same time. "Deputy Marshal" [1949] was the first feature film employing the Garutso Balanced Lens followed by "Apache Chief" [1949], "Cyrano de Bergerac" [1950], and "The Wild One" [1953]. US patent 5212589 [1953] Abstract: "A lens system having discrete variations of focal length at discrete distances of radius outward from the optic axis for focussing light of plural wavelengths. The lens system which directs a laser beam onto a target for ablation or exposure applications includes one set of lens elements to handle short wavelength light used for ablation or exposure applications, and another set of lens elements to handle long wavelength light used for alignment applications. The lens system which provides for the ablation or exposure functions at short wavelength and for through-the-lens alignment at a longer wavelength and higher numerical aperture consists of three elements. Two outer lens elements are made entirely of fused quartz. An inner element disposed between the two outer lens is composed of any material such as optical glass. The inner lens element has a hole ground through its center. " The Garutso Balanced Lens is still being used: "Yellow " [2005] and "Bauerfeind" [2009]. perception September 4, 2009 Masterful This is the way Cyrano was meant to be performed. The original dialogue and the remarkable performances in this film are simply not to be missed. Watch it now and enjoy. Fabulous. malary March 25, 2009 Marvelous What a film! I usually don't particular like it when a play is put on film, but this was absolutely charming. I love the dialogue, especially the scene at the beginning where Cyrano says things like "Small my nose? Why, magnificent my nose! " and such. Jose Ferrar greatly deserved any awards that he got for this role. 'Bravo' to all the cast and crew! Danial August 29, 2007 Jose Ferrar at his best! This has to be in the top 5 best movies found on the Archive. Thanks again, to those who make these great offerings available to us. Antsy August 26, 2007 Much appreciated Obviously a great classic performance of a great play. I was delighted to find it on, as it was an old favourite of mine. The MPEG2 copy here is good, although the contrast is rather poor. I only want to add that I had no problem playing this or any other film downloaded from this site on either the VLC player () or KMPlayer (just search, it can be downloaded from several places). These are both free, and both play almost any media file without the need for additional codecs. I've never had either of them try to uninstall any existing software on my computers nor have they caused any conflicts. If you're having trouble, you might try one or the other. Shadows_Girl Not Really a Review---WAIT, YES IT IS. OK, Jose Ferrer (Mel's dad if you're a big CROSSING JORDAN fan), and, as if that weren't enoigh we get!!! A FLOURISH OF TRUMPETS!!! Mala Powers, who died just last June from Leukemia, and who appeared in over 70 movies and television shows during her career. Hard to believe Cyrano was only her fourth. Then William Prince: This actor looks AND sounds a LOT like Lew Ayres which probably didn't help him any in getting film roles. Most of his work, until a couple of years before his death in 1996, was on television. this adaptation of the play. It's the best. OK, you may have and may still see other films or television presentations that give you the WHOLE play but you will NEVER see Cyrano played better than Mr. Ferrar did here. (There's a reason it got him the best actor Oscar for that year---AND a Golden Globe). FIVE STARS FOR CYRANO. NOW: If you have sound but no video (I have observed this problem with several different files) one way to fix this is to install the k-lite codec pack which you can now download from the go HEREk THEN watch your movie in the Windows Classic Media Player that comes with that pack. I did it and sound and picture both work fine. One note about the codec pack. 2 things will happen when you install the first of the two downloads I have put here for you. ONE it will drag you to K-Lite's official webpage to get the update. But you already have the update (I assume you downloaded BOTH files) so just shut their page down with a nod of thanks and go ahead and install the update. The second thing that will happen is that it will try to UNinstall any divx software you may have. Depending on how much storage space and how much RAM you have it is usually safe to keep your old software as well as this. It will try to argue with you but be firm. I have tried it BOTH ways and I have more choice keeping both and no system instability either. But that's up to you I just wanted to give you a head's up. flickfdude May 19, 2007 excellent A very entertaining, emotionally engaging film. The MPEG 1 is a good copy. billbarstad March 13, 2007 Great A very enjoyable telling of the tragic romance. Well produced and directed. Stagy at times. Jose Ferrer is excellent as Cyrano. I downloaded the mpeg1 file. Audio and video are fine. estradam February 27, 2007 only sound plays I downloaded, only sound plays, no moving pictures. What am I doing wrong? surfvh Use Quicktime 7 under Apple's System 10. 39; it never fails I've downloaded somewhere between 300-400 movies off of this site and never had any trouble playing those movies using the above combination of software and burning those movies to DVD using Final Cut Pro. This is despite comments left by other people who seem to be having various odd problems playing and burning those same movies. For instance, I just downloaded and watched the MP4 version of this movie, Cyrano de Bergerac, and had no problems with it... the sound is all there and so is the picture. Try the above setup, it always works perfectly for me. As to my opinion of this movie, it was the best version available until Gerard Depardieu did his in French (worth learning the language if only for that reason). As a side note, I think his version of the Count of Monte Christo (also in French) is also very good. billz favorite - February 12, 2007 can't download I have tried all formats yet my media players won't play this----any suggestions? bearpuf January 12, 2007 Marvelous if I could hear it As of the other day I was able to download the mpg1 file (about 1. 2 gb) and I'm delighted to see and hear it from beginning to end. A nice thrill and a marvelous piece of classic cinema! mmaenner January 2, 2007 Mpeg2 doesn't work for me I just tried the Mpeg2 version and is stops after about 11 minutes. I tried it with 5 different video player programs and it's no go. It's a great movie I hope it gets fixed, but I wouldn't waste my time downloading 4. 4Gig until it does. IAmTheRedDragon A classic!! I had the same problem as the previous two posters, having downloaded the MPG file and then the MP4 file, to find that neither had sound after about 15 minutes. I have now downloaded the MPEG2 file and can confirm that it has sound throughout. The only problem I had with it, is that the last minute or 2 seems to be missing - it cuts off abruptly during the last scene and there are no end titles. Don't know if this is just me, or is this copy missing the last minute or so? In any case, this is such a brilliant movie - so well written, and Jose Ferrer's acting in the lead role is superb, really making this wonderful feisty character his own. I saw this film years ago and was so impressed with it, and it's great to see it again. Very recommended. leuchter January 1, 2007 mpeg2 sound works!! the download of mpeg2 took me less then 2 hours (with free download manager) the sound works. strange!!

Martin Crimp 's blisteringly raw version of Cyrano de Bergerac has been a great success so far during its run at The Playhouse Theatre in London's West End. After screening over 80 theatre productions in the last ten years, NT Live are now screening this theatrical masterpiece all over the world. Edmond Rostand 's 1897 play follows Cyrano de Bergerac; a soldier of brilliant verbal wit who feels intense insecurity about his large nose. Due to this he feels he can never declare his true feelings of love and desire for his distant cousin Roxane. Fellow soldier Christian catches Roxane's eye, but it quickly becomes clear to Cyrano that Christian is very good-looking, but also rather stupid. Cyrano decides to speak his love for Roxane through Christian, by penning exquisite love letters for Christian to send to her. When Christian dies in battle, Cyrano maintains the pretence, but when he himself is mortally wounded that Roxane discovers the tragic truth. Director Jamie Lloyd and writer Martin Crimp have taken this story and radically reinvented it for the modern day. Rostand's original rhyming couplets are taken and reworked to dynamic speech, with more in common with rap or a particularly high-quality poetry slam. The language sounds and feels vibrant, current, relevant, witty and incredibly clever. This is a production of many layers; from dark insecurity to sparkling wit and dynamic movement. BAFTA award winner and Olivier award nominee James McAvoy plays Cyrano and is utterly mesmerising to watch. If anything McAvoy has settled even further into the role over the past few months, showing the vulnerability and disquiet under the character's outward swagger and confidence. McAvoy's natural Glaswegian accent is enhanced by his delivery and wraps itself around the words beautifully. We hear a wide range of accents and see an incredibly diverse cast onstage. The acting is also very strong, with Great Performances from a poised and self-assured Anita-Joy Uwajeh as Roxane, a cold and camply cutting Tom Edden as nemesis De Guiche and a delicately urban Eben Figueiredo as Christian. The Playhouse Theatre is an intimate venue, seating on 780 people. Having seen the production twice at the theatre, there is a worry that it would lose the intensity in a screening. Lloyd's staging is unusual and challenging to reflect onscreen. The cast mainly speak out to the audience, with little face-to-face interaction. They also face the back of the stage a lot. However, the screening direction by Tony Grech-Smith demonstrates his wide experience with multi-camera directing for NT Live; the nuance and detail is clear to see throughout. The mirror placed a certain points at the back of the stage during the production is zoomed into, showing the actors' reflections that are difficult to see in the theatre. This adds great intimacy and also interest. There are also some very well-considered, almost filmic shots, such as placing both Cyrano and then Christian to the right of a shot, while the shadow of Roxane, projected from the middle of the stage, looms large in the rest of the screen. The incredibly erotic and intensely powerful scene where Cyrano speaks for Christian directly to Roxane, maintains the electricity felt in the theatre. McAvoy looks directly into the camera, sitting on a plastic chair; there are no props, no stunts, no clever lighting tricks, just pure emotion. The camera positions for the screening must dictate that there are no cameras very close to the stage, as this is the shot that shakes very slightly and must have been shot with a long lens. Soutra Gilmore's design is stark and stripped back; using mainly a large wooden box to house the actors, with additional the use of a black background and staircase. The one niggle would be a lack of many wide shots used. The almost-bleak emptiness of the stage is very much part of the striking look of the production and draws the audience attention to the actors. This sparseness is missed a little through a reliance on close up shots. Overall, this is a mesmeric production, directly expertly for the big screen. It is utterly immersive, moving and a powerfully beautiful reminder of just how glorious and inventive language can be. Cyrano de Bergerac is encoring in selected cinemas in the UK and internationally. Photo Credit: Marc Brenner Related Articles From This Author Aliya Al-Hassan.
