Synopsis Interrogation Pandi and his friends, immigrant workers in Andhra Pradesh, are picked up by cops for a crime they never committed. And thus begins their nightmare, where they become pawns in a vicious game where the voiceless are strangled by those with power. Cast Crew Details Genres Director Producers Writers Editor Cinematography Composer Sound Studio Country Languages Alternative Titles Visaaranai, Interrogation Popular reviews More [ Favorites?2010s] The first Tamil-language film to ever compete at the Venice International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere in 2015 in the Orizzonti sidebar, Interrogation ( Visaranai) is the most visceral and multilayered portrait of police corruption and brutality I’ve seen since Pablo Trapero’s El bonaerense (2002). Directed with blunt conviction by Vetrimaaran, a relative newcomer who made his feature debut in 2007, this true-life story deals primarily with the nightmarish predicament of four young migrant workers from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Although at times excessively violent, the otherwise admirably single-minded first half meticulously depicts the savagery the quartet suffer at the hands of an indifferent and racist group of cops hell-bent on extracting a false confession… deeply distressing film; either there is no freedom without being complicit in another’s suffering, or there is no freedom, period. vetrimaran is definitely a director to look out for, treating this piece of parallel cinema more like horror than anything else, including beautiful but stomach-churning wide-angle tracking shots and sinister lavender spotlighting. the state as amoral apparatus of power in which nobody is spared, and all are expendable as it moves forward. like writer/director/producer vetri maran's last film, the madurai-set cockfighting epic aadukalam, the gets deeper and stranger just at the moment you think you've understood what kind of film this is; all the strengths of that film (the exacting local detail, love of speech and procedure, the clear-eyed understanding of human failure, the heart of night finale) with none of that film's missteps. establishes its presence in such explicit manner that the swerve, halfway in, into stranger, darker territory feels even more remarkable. hard to watch, harder to shake off. Cold-headed direction that explodes in the beginning but the smoke caused from it, creates a thick wall of fog to surround the almost surrealistic turns of bad luck and corruption of the system. Vetrimaaran navigates between these poor, wrongly convinced and used Tamil workers and the corruption on the higher levels of the system, in the police stations and in between them - motives are always selfish, just to polish the brand. From one beat-up to another, it's easy to take use of those who have very limited options. It definitely isn't the first time that Indian cinema focuses on dealing with the corruption of the police but this must be one of the most cold-blooded portraits of big men… There is a scene in the film, where one of the police officers hit on the elbow of a dead body to straighten his stiffed hand. It is shown in the background & it is a trivial scene to say. But, that is the kind of realistic detailing film has. It raises the bar of realistic cinema to a new height, that will certainly be unattainable by anyone, but Vetrimaran himself. Visaranai seems like a distant cousin of brilliant film 'Court'. Such films redefine cinema and reassures why we love cinema so much in the first place. Can't recall when was the last time I was so moved by any Police procedural film. It is shocking, brutal, and a very honest… Recent reviews My mom has been hyping up this film for a while and I quite liked the other two Vetrimaraan films I've seen, so I was excited to see this one. I definitely think this is my favorite film of his (so far). It's also the bleakest of the three films of his that I've seen. Would make for an interesting double feature with Hunger, which I watched last week. Would be a brutal evening though. Really an excruciatingly sharp look at the brutal and lethal ways that the caste system and the structures of privilege that exist in society pits people against each other and those in power always benefit. From a technical standpoint, the thing that stood out most… Raw and realistic. The first half and second half feel like two different films. The theme of internal politics gets scattered in the second half while the first half is dealing mostly with the incompetence and corruption within the system. Watch it if you like realistic crime thrillers. Similarly to Deception, there were some technical issues with this movie that made it hard to enjoy as a whole. In general though, I thought it was thought-provoking and engaging. Visceral, dark & scary AF, this is a reminder of what those within the system with power can do to the powerless. Your heart goes out to the 4 migrant workers who are forced to confess for a crime they didn't commit, with no access to any resources or agency. The movie turns on its head when the victim is a politically well connected, educated and rich accountant. When the system is out to get you, it bloody will! I feel sick to my stomach. This was a rather challenging film, based around the experiences of a Chandra Kumar, a Tamil immigrant to a wealthier northern province of India, who was framed for a crime he didn't commit, by an corrupt police force measured by how many cases they clear, rather than finding the truth of the crime. It's told in two parts?the first is based on Chandhra Kumar's experience in being arrested with a group of his friends. The second, is an imagining of what happened when they were released, when the others disappeared without a trace, Kumar being the only member to survive. As such the second piece should be fanciful?it's something of a conspiracy theory, told by a man with a grudge… This is a story about Tamil Nadu migrants working in Andhra Pradesh who are accosted by the police, imprisoned without being told what for, and then repeatedly beaten in an attempt to get them to confess to a crime that isn't even explained to them. Well, that is the first half of the story. From there the migrants are released when they protest and convince a judge that they have been wrongly accused. From there, one of the "good cops" puts them to work cleaning the jail. While cleaning, they overhear the police conspiring to cover up a murder. The migrants are once again taken hostage by the police, but this time the consequences could be fatal. The movie is… Easily, one of the most stressful films I've ever seen and the fact that it isn't the best achievement of the film is really telling. It just never lets you understand itself, there's always something new to be revealed in a completely different way, till the last frame and every revelation just feels so natural and adds another layer to it. It's flawless. Great work by Vetrimaaran??? True story said Perfectly??? Straight off, this movie is totally different to what you may be used when thinking about Romanian movies. Starting with the story, the cast (Catrinel Marlon is magnificent) the scenery, smart humor and hidden little gems (references to various famous scenes in other movies) this film makes you think you're watching more of a Hollywood movie than a Romanian one, although, as a downside, I must say certain characters seem to be portrayed a bit simplistic.
The story is, to some extent, a typical police one, but the twist of using the whistling language from Gomera Island enriches the plot all around as it unfolds. I really liked the movie and I would be happy if it sets the new trend in Romanian Cinema.

First Hit: I was, and even a day later, confused by this story and film.
We're really introduced to Cristi (Vlad Ivanov) and Gilda (Catrinel Marlon) when Gilda walks up to Cristi and asks to speak with him in his apartment. Cristi whispers into her ear that he apartment is bugged, so she kisses him and tells him she'll play the part of a hooker, and they can whisper her request, which is to help her by getting a criminal, Zsolt, out of prison. In an early scene, Cristi is on a ferry heading to an island where the ancient people use to communicate by whistling. Cristi is part of a plot working with other criminals to free Zsolt and to do this he has to learn the whistling language. The language breaks vowels and consonants into seven whistling sounds. This lesson in this language was the most exciting part of the film. I was fascinated with Cristi learning how to whistle and wanted to practice, along with him, right in the theater. As the film develops, some parts led me to believe that the story in the movie was pre-planned, and I missed something as the film progressed. At other times, I felt as though Cristi and Gilda were planning the ending along the way because they'd fallen for each other. As an undercover detective, Cristi works for an unnamed woman place by Rodica Lazar, who is trying to play both ends of this story. The result is a film that has the appearance of a storyline running at two different levels, but in the end, the person sitting next to me asked if he missed something about how the ending worked out, I said "I don't know, and I still don't. Ivanov was quietly compelling as the detective who was also on the take. Marlon was excellent as the woman who seemed totally in control of story behind the plot. Lazar was strong as the head of the investigation and also susceptible to corruption. Corneliu Porumboiu wrote and directed this quizzical story that left me hanging. Overall: I either missed a critical section of this Romanian film or the story was attempting to be too elusive.
