So, a couple months ago I received a Sonos PLAY:1 speaker that was bundled with my new phone. "COOL" I thought because, while i never considered getting a “smart/streaming" speaker any time soon, I always really liked the sound of the Sonos speakers when working at JB Hi-Fi (Aus/Nz Electronics retail store if you’re unaware). Several of the dedicated Hi-Fi staff also recommended the heck out of the Sonos speakers too (Hi-Fi was never my strong area, more cameras, computers and small speakers). Others didn't as well but everyone has different tastes. It’s been in the courier box since getting it because I’ve been so distracted of late but tonight’s the night as Dexter once said (possible foreshadowing). I open up the box, read the instructions (as all good people should just to be safe) and install the app on my phone as instructed. First problem arises: I can't get the app to get past the “connect speakers” part on my phone - the phone that the speaker was literally bundled with btw - and it just keeps saying that it needs an update but that the update isn’t available yet - Ok, well I can just manually update the app in the Play Store, right? NOPE. “Ok, whatever, that's fine”, I think, because there's a desktop app. I install the desktop app and try to connect but the connect option just links me to the website. “What? ” After several minutes of solid confusion and scrolling through faqs and forum posts I learn that you NEED to use the app to set up the speakers. This is my first big “UMMM, WHAT? ” moment. It should be noted that this requirement literally (according to forum posts) only changed 3 months ago because the buffs at Sonos decided that people apparently don't use computers as much (??? ) so while you can still control and stream with the speakers via a computer you simply can't set them up with the computer. *it’s at this point I remember why I stopped learning about Wi-Fi speakers when working at JB Hi-Fi and instead left that to the Hi-Fi sales guys. I also scour my memory to make sure I didn’t sell any Wi-Fi speakers to any older folks for obvious reasons but luckily I don’t recall any. * “OKAY - that's fine”, I once again think. I'm a logical person and patient person (goodness knows I had to be to survive close to 7 years of working in electronics retail). I’m not sure why the app isn't working but glitches happen and this is my first proper personal foray into smart/streaming speakers. I wait 24 hours and come back to the app but it’s still having the same glitch. "This is still ok! " I think again but with more confidence because earlier in the day I had a thought that it could just be my phone and there’s another phone I can use. I don't want to load anything unnecessary onto mum's mobile but I still have my old Samsung S6, the phone my current phone replaced - the screen is cracked to heck and it's equally laggy BUT the app DOES manage to work. Not only that but once I got it setup on my S6 the app on my current phone began working properly as well and updated itself. HECK YEAH. I start tinkering with the phone app. Now this is where I remember that Wi-Fi speakers tend to have limitations where you can only “stream services" as opposed to “all" audio. “Hmmm”, I think. But, wait, of course! This is a modern speaker and thus it has Bluetooth, right? NOPE. “But, wait”, I remember, despite being a Wi-Fi speaker the app literally asked me to activate Bluetooth during setup so that it could help to connect to the speaker so surely it has Bluetooth, right? The speaker looks at me coldly - I realise logic is beginning to collapse in on itself and that if I press this clear paradox in the devices programming that all time and space will collapse in on itself… so I move on. Okay, fine… that's alright. I understand now: You’re a WI-FI speaker. I got it. I go into the the app and it shows me all the services I can link. I don’t use, nor have I even heard of most of the services it has listed but I see and I have Soundcloud so I link it. And guess what? It works great! The app knows all my likes and playlists and I can even listen to my own self singing from my Soundcloud channel if I want to listen to my dumb voice and cringe myself to sleep. COOL! Most importantly though, the speaker sounds great - better even that the ones we had at JB Hi-Fi, presumably because i’m in a small room and not a “big” show floor. AWESOME! I also recall from memory that there were smart speakers at JB Hi-Fi that could be “tuned” to sound perfect for any space in a room - like, if you had it behind curtains or a weird shaped room - using some magic. I make a mental note to come back to this and go back to the app. Now, I also have a Spotify account and Sonos supports Spotify. Perfect! I link the account and it links without a fuss. No warnings, no conditions, it just links and is suddenly good to go. SWEET! I go to play a song on Spotify but my optimism is halted as I am greeted with a message - a message that literally disappears in the blink of an eye mind you - that basically says I need Spotify Premium. “HECKING WHAT!?!? ” This is exacerbated by the fact i have to keep clicking a song so that the image flashes enough times that I can read the whole thing and, even on a large screen, it’s in a small enough font that I have to squint. “OK, fine” i once again think - “this must be a mobile thing” - like how you have limited skips and can’t play specific songs when using the free Spotify app but not on computers because the owners clearly know that there are so many places to get free music on a computer vs on a mobile. Whatever, I’ll survive, and that’s why I have a laptop and a PC. At this point I go back to my laptop and access the previously downloaded Sonos Application and conveniently everything I linked via the mobile app is already linked which is super nice - BUT WAIT: there’s apparently no way to completely mirror my computers audio with the possible exception of mirroring to an Apple TV or something the app mentions. OK, NOW YOUR STARTING TO RUMMLE MY JIMMIES HERE, PATRICK. At this point I dig into the desktop app and face the realisation that it only plays “streaming content” same as the app. OKAY, COOOOOOOL - to be fair, while I occasionally use my laptop to watch movies I primarily use my laptop to watch a lot of Youtube anyways so I can play that through the speaker, right? THAT’S A BIG FAT RIGHT NOPE THERE, SON, THE ONLY YOUTUBE YOU CAN PLAY THROUGH THIS THING IS IF YOU’RE STREAMING THE YOUTUBE MUSIC APP - but… base Youtube IS literally streaming, that doesn’t make sense - I SAID NOPE, SON, NOPE-SI-ROO, YOU WANT ONE OF THOSE OTHER SPEAKERS THAT LITERALLY DO EVERYTHING, WE ONLY DO ONE NICHE THING AND ONLY ONE THING BECAUSE WE THREW LOGIC OUT THE WINDOW WHEN WE MADE THIS THING. “OK” *heavy breath* “OK” *another heavy breath* “I GET IT…… but, I CAN stream Spotify via my computer to the Sonos Speaker, right? ” HELL. FUDGING. NO. LOSER. *I begin to stare into the abyss that is my black Sonos speaker that is, at this point, basically daring me to snap* “OK, THAT’S FINE. YOU WANNA KNOW WHY!? BECAUSE SOMEONE - ‘SOMEONE’ - HAS SURELY FOUND A WAY AROUND THIS? ” Investigative internet searching ensues. The first few pages I find suggest a bluetooth adaptor but the Play:1 has no 3. 5mm or optical port - it literally only has a power and network cable port. This is also where I discover that the next model up, the PLAY:5, actually DOES have a 3. 5mm jack. WOW, IT’S ALMOST LIKE THEY REALISED PEOPLE LIKE TO USE THEIR SPEAKERS TO CONNECT TO A WIDE VARIETY OF THINGS - OH BUT THERE’S NOOOO WAY THEY WOULD WANT TO DO THAT WITH THEIR INTRODUCTORY SPEAKER, NO-SIR-REE-DOO. OK - I do some more digging: I could get a Sonos Connect device, made by Sonos, that basically allows any device to plug into the speaker - it’s not what the Connect is ‘specifically’ designed for and it has a very-very slight delay because of this (roughly 30ms) but, whatever, it will do the job - EXCEPT IT COSTS ROUGHLY $499 AND FUDGE THAT. Finally, FINALLY, I find a workaround that is practically guaranteed to work. There’s a program called SonoAir someone made that basically tricks the Sonos into thinking that any audio you play on your computer is “streamed” audio. PERFECT. I follow the recommended Youtube video tutorial step by step and as I get to the end - and only then - does the guy in the video just casually mention “now that everything works be aware that this method does result in a roughly 4 second delay in playback”. ……… WHY. ARE. YOU. MENTIONING. THIS. NOW!? *sigh* *the abyss somewhat dissipates due to how late it is* Ok, it’s almost midnight, whatever. I press play. The “4 second delay” is more like 7 seconds. It’s damn good audio but it’s on a 7 second delay. I also then find out that I can’t “tune” the speaker perfectly for my room because the “tuning app” or whatever only works on iOS devices because reasons. *i’m all out of sighs at this point* I’m… I’m too tired and too expectant of disappointments by this stage to even care anymore. The speaker works and it sounds brilliant and while i can’t watch movies through it because of the delay it I can use it solely for music so I guess that’s alright? After all, it was bundled with the phone so I didn’t “technically” pay for it, right? I don’t know. I definitely should have managed my expectations and should have remembered my knowledge from my retail days but i feel like this was overcomplicated for complications sake. Maybe i’ll give it to a friend after pondering long enough of what could have been. Or maybe someone far better at this stuff will have more insight and be able to help me get it to do what I feel it 'should' do. tl;dr: Received a free Sonos PLAY:1 speaker. Now a days these actors need stunt doubles and cgi to make a film that's not worth watching. R.I.P. Mr. Swayze. You'll always be remembered long after you've taken your seat in Heaven. Why is everyone forgetting about Point Break? That's his best role- period. I watched this documentary and even had is recorded on DirectTV. It was a story that was truly emotionally executed and I was right there for each moment. Hugs to his family and friends. I am patrick 3a the patron saint of ireland oh. “When I look at how the schedule is theoretically laying out on my desk, it does not feel like it’s one after another, ” she said, adding that by the time the Yeoh-led series premieres, “Discovery” may be over. “ Some of these can be considered as replacements as opposed to additions, ” she said. “These ‘Trek’ shows take a lot of incubation, because they’re very prep heavy, visual effects heavy… we’re seeing it more as we’re getting a good jump on making sure that there is a good fulsome stream of ‘Trek’ material. ” There may more to this bit of information than I've seen people giving credit for. As she said some could be seen as replacements, what could it be replacing if not Discovery? Picard will only be in its first season by 2021 (and it has a rough cap of three seasons planned last I read), and Lower Decks will only have had it first out of two seasons. We don't even have a release window for the Nickelodeon series, so Section 31 might be replacing Discovery after Season 3. Now, just a heads up since I know some people will get really touchy about this subject - No, I don't hate Discovery. No, I don't watch Midnight's Edge. No, I don't think Discovery is failing. This is not a thread about hating Discovery, so you can put away your pitchforks and stop writing your death threats. I am only proposing that Discovery may had only been planned for three seasons. In fact, each CBS Star Trek series so far might have a short life-span in mind. Picard is set up to run three seasons. Lower Decks was ordered for two seasons. While this is not to say more can't come, it is odd when a series that isn't even out yet has two seasons ordered if it's planned to be a continuous thing. Ceti Alpha V, though shelved, was planned to be only three episodes. When Alex Kurtzman was originally discussing the new Star Trek series as a part of his five-year deal, he mentioned a limited series. As far as I know, we do not know currently if that is referring to Section 31, Picard or something else entirely. While there is no confirmation that season 3 will wrap up Discovery's story, it sounds likely considering what was said in regards to Section 31 at the top of the page here as well as how Discovery was originally planned as an anthology series where the Michael Burnham story would only be one season long. This is, of course, unless you count Section 31 was a continuation of Discovery which, if this is the case, I do as it will star Georgiou and likely Ash Tyler (and for all we know, there could be a chance for a Prime Universe Lorca since the actor has hinted that his story isn't done by saying he isn't allowed to tell anyone what is in store in the future for that character. ) If Section 31 is planned as a sequel to Discovery's 'slot' on the CBS Star Trek timeline, I think we might be able to figure out three Star Trek 'slots' that might be loosely planned to keep the expanded universe diverse and the Star Trek series running throughout the year feeling different. The Dark Star Treks. Whether you like Discovery or not, you have to agree that thematically and visually it is a darker series, at least similar to the likes of Deep Space Nine (as opposed to The Next Generation). From what we know of Picard from interviews and the trailer alone, it looks like a much less dark series and keeps the themes much closer to the TNG movies in my view. A show about Section 31 would also be a darker series given the nature of the organization, so it is interesting it sounds like it could be coming after Discovery's story finale. Another 'dark series' proposed was Ceti Alpha V which, if the likely Viacom-CBS merger goes through, it would not longer have to be put on hold and could fill the gap between Section 31's finale and the next limited dark series. Perhaps The Worf Chronicles? The 'Classic'/Light Star Treks. Picard is filling the second spot since Star Trek as a television series was not only revived but exploded. While we have yet to see it come out yet, Picard is definitely invoking (in more ways than just a return of iconic characters) the feeling of 'old-school' Star Trek - that lighter optimism and even being described as a more psychological series as opposed to the "bullet" that is Discovery (their words, not mine. ) With Anson Mount and Ethan Peck on board, and with Alex Kurtzman not only saying he's interested in the possibility of Pike series but blatantly teasing it to the audience at Comic Con, an eventual NCC-1701 series doesn't seem terribly unlikely. While there's a LOT of Star Trek going on, however, I could see this premiering after Picard's third season and taking its place as the 'classic' Star Trek series. The Weird Star Treks. Lower Decks sort of came out of absolutely no where in my mind. It's nothing like any Star Trek we've seen before, as at least TAS wasn't branded as a sitcom. I'm calling this the weird Star Treks as they're an especially abnormal style for the franchise, and I don't think Lower Decks will be replaced with yet another comedy when the time comes. Alex Kurtzman's interest in a Starfleet Academy series (written by writers of Gossip Girl) makes me think it could still be coming and could fill this slot when the time comes, as I do not see Starfleet Academy being able to fill Discovery/Section 31 or Picard's shoes. This might be a 'slot' that allows the creators to really play around with and stretch the boundary of what Star Trek is. First comedic ensigns, then college cadets and perhaps someday afterwards something even more out of the blue. Risa detective series, anyone? Nickelodeon. I don't think this is really a slot since it's not CBS, I'm just making a point that I didn't forget that the renegade teen's show is coming. What are your thoughts?
