Plot [ edit] The Grudge describes a curse that is born when someone dies in the grip of extreme rage or sorrow. The curse is an entity created where the person died. Those who encounter this supernatural force die, and the curse is reborn repeatedly, passing from victim to victim in an endless, growing chain of horror. The following events are explained in their actual order; however, the film is presented in a nonlinear narrative. The Saeki Family [ edit] Kayako Saeki, a housewife living in suburban Tokyo, is in love with college professor Peter Kirk, obsessively writing about him in a diary. Her husband Takeo becomes jealous as he discovers the diary and believes that Kayako is having an affair with another man. Takeo brutally murders her, their young son Toshio, and the pet cat Mar in violent rage. After Takeo hides the bodies in the house, Toshio's ghost hangs him. After receiving a letter from Kayako, Peter visits the Saeki house only to find both her and Takeo's corpses along with Toshio's ghost. Shocked, he flees the scene and kills himself the next day. The remainder of the Saeki family rise again as ghosts due to the curse, notably Kayako, who appears as an onryō ghost. The Williams Family [ edit] A few years later, the Williams family from America move into the Saeki house. While Matt is thrilled with the house, his wife Jennifer and dementia -ridden mother Emma feel uncomfortable. Matt and Jennifer are quickly consumed by the curse. Yoko, a care worker, arrives at the house to find Emma alone before she encounters Kayako, who drags her up into the attic. Karen Davis [ edit] Concerned about Yoko's disappearance, her employer Alex sends another care worker, Karen Davis, to take over the care of Emma. At the house, Karen discovers Toshio sealed up in a wardrobe and later on witnesses Kayako's spirit descending from the ceilings to claim Emma. Alex arrives at the house shortly after and finds Emma dead and Karen in a state of shock. Alex calls the police, with the presence of Detective Nakagawa. In the attic, Nakagawa and his partner Igarashi find Matt and Jennifer's bodies, along with a human's lower jaw. Meanwhile, Matt's sister, Susan, is pursued by Kayako around her office building. At home, Kayako attacks her and she vanishes. While leaving work, Alex is killed by Yoko's jawless corpse. Kayako begins haunting Karen, who informs her boyfriend Doug of the situation. Karen researches the house, eventually confronting Nakagawa, who explains that three of his colleagues investigating the Saeki deaths were all consumed by the curse. That night, Nakagawa carries gasoline into the house in an attempt to burn it down, but is killed by Takeo. After learning that Doug has ventured to the Saeki house to look for her, Karen races there. She finds Doug paralyzed and attempts to flee with him. Kayako crawls down the stairs and latches onto Doug, who dies of shock. As Kayako closes in, Karen sees the gasoline and ignites it. Karen survives and in the hospital, she learns that the house also survived the fire. Visiting Doug's body, Karen realizes that she is still haunted by Kayako. What started out as a pair of short films and two straight-to-video releases became a Japanese cinema phenomenon, spawned two US remakes and transitioned into a web series and a video game. Shimizu was involved, to some degree or another, with all of the Ju-on incarnations. But now, with a rebooted sequel that loosely follows on from the events of The Grudge 2, the reins have been passed to writer and director Nicolas Pesce (the fact that it¡Çs titled The Grudge rather than The Grudge 3 is presumably an acknowledgement of a partial reboot). Fresh from his impressively grisly debut, The Eyes of My Mother, and its twisted, transgressive follow-up, Piercing, Pesce would seem to be an ideal choice to breathe fresh life into a stale horror franchise. In reality, however, there is little that sets this apart from the earlier films. Pesce¡Çs input is evident in the quality of the cast: the consistently excellent Jacki Weaver has a supporting role as an assisted suicide consultant; meanwhile, Andrea Riseborough is terrific as the unflappable cop investigating a series of gruesome deaths. But in terms of the story, it¡Çs business as usual for the relentlessly furious spirit Kayako, although she is rarely glimpsed in her original form in this instalment. The cluttered parallel story structure ? the fates of several different individuals over a period of two years are woven together ? results in a series of mini-scares rather than a gradual build to a big one. The curse torments those who contract it with visions of wet-haired apparitions, disembodied limbs, mute children or whatever else might strike a screenwriter¡Çs fancy. This free-form curse requires scant logic and never stops, much like the franchise it inhabits. The new ¡ÈGrudge¡É ? the second remake since the original theatrical movie, ¡ÈJu-On: The Grudge, ¡É a Japanese film first shown in 2002 ? boasts respectable indie credentials from the writer-director Nicolas Pesce, who displayed a skillful if sophomoric flair for escalating gross-outs in his previous features, ¡ÈThe Eyes of My Mother¡É and ¡ÈPiercing. ¡É Some of that talent is apparent here, particularly in Pesce¡Çs use of sound. (The wittiest moments involve the friendly lapping of a dog and the insistent sputtering of a sprinkler. ) The actress Andrea Riseborough also hits some moving notes as a detective raising a son alone after her husband¡Çs death. And there are a few good chills when Jacki Weaver turns up as an assisted-suicide counselor. Because of a nonchronological structure, we encounter Weaver¡Çs character¡Çs corpse before learning how it reached its advanced state of decay. But Pesce is stuck with certain standbys. This time, John Cho plays the unfortunate shower-taker who realizes mid-shampoo that there is an unfamiliar hand in his hair. And out-of-focus specters who sneak up behind people or disappear and reappear with light-switch flicks are not the stuff of primal terror. The remake remains cursed by a fatally hokey concept. When Japanese filmmaker Takashi Shimizu originated Ju-On: The Grudge in 2002, it¡Çs doubtful he foresaw the long life it would go on to have. In addition to several sequels the movie also spawned an American remake which, in turn, produced two sequels of its own. It should therefore come as no surprise that the latest iteration ? which has been billed as both reboot and sidequel ? has little that horror fans haven¡Çt seen before in this or other similar franchises. But while The Grudge doesn¡Çt reinvent the wheel, indie horror director Nicolas Pesce ( The Eyes Of My Mother, Piercing) deserves credit for the occasionally effective utilisation of familiar elements. Like Shimizu first envisioned almost two decades ago, The Grudge has multiple interwoven narratives which take place over three years. That gambit allows for an impressive and inclusive cast ? John Cho, Frankie Faison, Jacki Weaver, and GLOW ¡Çs Betty Gilpin are but a few of the recognisable names who pop up here ? but it also makes it difficult to fully connect with the various stories. As such, this is very much a film in which the plot dictates character, and there¡Çs only a limited amount of screen time for most of the actors to turn their roles into something more than two-dimensional. William Sadler fares better than the rest of the ensemble in this regard, making the most of harrowing sequences as a cursed detective. The Grudge is also the latest horror movie to be a little too in love with the jump scare, many of which are predictable several seconds before they transpire. From murky tubs to peekaboo screams, there¡Çs a few too many clichés that are all checked off the horror bingo card in dutiful fashion. And yet, this is far from just another lazy reboot. The scares may be intermittent but the pervasively bleak atmosphere is anything but, and Pesce¡Çs latest is frequently unsettling. There¡Çs also an abundance of spooky imagery ? especially when things get really brutal in the third act ? a creepy, at times Halloween -esque score by horror music specialists The Newton Brothers, and a clever final shot that is haunting in its stillness. It¡Çs all anchored by another impressive performance from the chameleonic Riseborough, who makes a number of thoughtfully subtle choices other actors might not have. Here¡Çs hoping that next time, her and Pesce¡Çs skills are in service of a fresher concept. A generic but competent reboot-quel enlivened by good performances across the board and some stylish direction. No grudges need be held here, but maybe it¡Çs time to put this franchise to bed.
If you want to pay to watch an hour and half to watch 4 different timelines go on at the same time with nothing happening in any of them, then watch this movie. There's no good plot, crappy characters, and no good scares. This movie was so boring and predictable I thought about leaving with the other half of the theater. Avoid at all costs.
