JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL is a continuation of the JUMANJI reboot series of comedy adventures, with now college-age friends having to return to the mystical video game to rescue their friend and to save Jumanji from a mean and powerful warlord bringing death and desolation throughout the land. JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL is an entertaining, funny, exciting comical adventure with some positive lessons about friendship, but it contains lots of foul language, including some strong offensive profanities, so MOVIEGUIDE advises extreme caution. As the movie opens, Spencer returns to his hometown from Columbia University in New York City for Christmas vacation. Hes supposed to be staying with his mother and her elderly father, Eddie, whos recovering from a hip replacement. Spencer is scheduled to meet up with his three high school friends Bethany, Fridge and Martha. Spencer recently broke up with Martha because he feels inadequate since they left the Jumanji video game where he took on the video game character of Dr. Bravestone. In the basement of his moms house, Spencer finds the Jumanji game and decides to return to Jumanji. His three friends come looking for him. They find the game and decide to return to Jumanji to rescue Spencer. However, the game only transfers Martha and Fridge to the game, along with Spencers grandfather and the grandfathers estranged friend, Milo, whos stopped by for a visit. This time, the grandfather becomes Dr. Bravestone, Milo becomes the zoologist Mouse Finbar, Martha is still the martial arts expert Ruby Roundhouse, and Fridge becomes the chubby cartographer Shelly Oberon. After some comical business with Milo and Spencer grandfather discovering the goofiness in the video game world, the games non-player character, Nigel, explains the games new story. They must retrieve a magical jewel from the powerful new villain, Jurgen the Brutal. When activated by the suns energy, the jewel keeps the whole land of Jumanji fertile. Jurgen has hidden the jewel in a box, so drought and desolation have begun to engulf the land. The team has to find Spencer and find a Jumanji berry, the one thing that weakens Jurgen. JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL is an entertaining, funny, exciting comical adventure. The heroes must overcome a rampaging herd of mean giant ostriches, a crazy congress of vicious baboons and a maze of rickety wooden bridges to get to Jurgens lair. During their quest, Martha and Spencer have to reconnect, and Grandfather Eddie must reconnect with his friend, Milo, who sold their restaurant to retire with his late wife. Selling the restaurant took away Eddies reason for living. Hes held a grudge against Milo ever since. THE NEXT LEVEL is about loving your friends and family. Happily, the movie has fewer gender-bending, sexual jokes when compared to the first JUMANJI reboot, which was subtitled WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE. However, like too many PG-13 tentpole movies recently, it still has lots of foul language, including more than several strong profanities. Therefore, despite its positive qualities, JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL is not an appropriate movie for families with younger children and teenagers, and MOVIEGUIDE advises extreme caution.

'Jumanji: The Next Level' is the second, third, or fourth film (depending on if you're counting 'Jumanji' 1995) and or 'Zathura: A space Adventure (2005) in the surprisingly successful franchise that's somehow managed to rival Star Wars and Marvel in terms of popularity and box-office success. It's the same as its immediate predecessor in two ways: firstly, the narratives are pretty much identical and, secondly, they're both fast-moving, fantastically entertaining and ferociously fun. Seriously, it's incredible that the last one worked, but the fact that this one is just as good is somehow even more surprising. While the MacGuffin driven plot is pretty generic, and the villain is extremely basic and unmemorable, it sort of gets away with it given its 'video-game nature' and, more importantly, the strength of its characters. It would be easy to dismiss the writing here and claim that its success comes from its spectacle, but that's just simply not the case. The film works because the characters are so well written and performed. They all have great chemistry, which creates the majority of the fun. This time around, the body-swapping concept is dialled-up a bit, too, which stops it from feeling like it's retreading old ground and allows the excellent actors to experiment even more. It's hard to believe that the 'real-world' actors barely have any scenes at all, which highlights how much the concept works. The big stars completely disappear and fully manage to channel their 'real life' counterparts; this just shows how good their performances are. The movie isn't deep, but it's not trying to be and sometimes that's great. It sets out to entertain its audience for two hours and it achieves that with ease. It's an effortlessly fun flick with a winning formula. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing where this series goes in its third outing (or is it the fourth? No, wait. the fifth. 7/10.

A little early to have to contend with a new overstuffed turkey. And yet, here is “Jumanji: The Next Level. ” This is the sequel to a 2017 reboot (again directed by Jake Kasdan) which connected mightily with audiences. In that movie, a quartet of teens got sucked into a video game that assigned them avatars, which also served as virtual life coaches. Wimpy Spencer got to inhabit Dwayne Johnson (a. k. a. the Rock) while shy Martha got to kick butt in Karen Gillans body. Self-absorbed Bethany got a soft comeuppance being Jack Black. And “Fridge, ” a giant jock, got cut down to Kevin Harts stature. Here, on winter break, downhearted Spencer ? his life hack didnt quite take ? has dug up the game and re-entered its world. His friends try to follow, but only a couple make it in. They are joined by Eddie, Spencers crotchety grandfather (a delightfully dyspeptic Danny DeVito) and Eddies estranged best pal, Milo (a warm Danny Glover. Yes, Eddie does wind up in Dwayne Johnsons body, which affords Johnson the opportunity to try a New Jersey accent. Its not bad. This all sounds more complicated than it plays out onscreen, which is to Kasdans credit. Adding to the twists is a body of water that enables avatar-switching; it reintroduces itself at a crucial story point, as one does. At another crucial point, the actress and rapper Awkwafina shows up to join in the ostensible fun; at another, Colin Hanks and Nick Jonas reprise their roles from the prior movie. Its perhaps unfair to call this a turkey. Its got some sweet moments, and the cast, as it did in the previous picture, enjoys itself at least semi-infectiously. Daniel Michael DeVito Jr. was born on November 17, 1944, in Neptune, New Jersey, to Italian-American parents. His mother, Julia (Moccello) was a homemaker. His father, Daniel, Sr., was a small business owner whose ventures included a dry cleaning shop, a dairy outlet, a diner, and a pool hall. While growing up in Asbury Park, his parents sent him to private schools. He attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel grammar school and Oratory Prep School. Following graduation in 1962, he took a job as a cosmetician at his sister's beauty salon. A year later, he enrolled at New York's American Academy of Dramatic Arts so he could learn more about cosmetology. While at the academy, he fell in love with acting and decided to further pursue an acting career. During this time, he met another aspiring actor Michael Douglas at the National Playwrights Conference in Waterford, Connecticut. The two would later go on to collaborate on numerous projects. Soon after he also met an actress named Rhea Perlman. The two fell in love and moved in together. They were married in 1982 and had three children together. In 1968, Danny landed his first part in a movie when he appeared as a thug in the obscure Dreams of Glass (1970. Despite this minor triumph, Danny became discouraged with the film industry and decided to focus on stage productions. He made his Off-Broadway debut in 1969 in "The Man With the Flower in His Mouth. He followed this up with stage roles in "The Shrinking Bride. and "Lady Liberty. In 1975, he was approached by director Milos Forman and Michael Douglas about appearing in the film version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) which would star Jack Nicholson in the leading role. With box office success almost guaranteed and a chance for national exposure, Danny agreed to the role. The movie became a huge hit, both critically and financially, and still ranks today as one the greatest movies of all time. Unfortunately, the movie did very little to help Danny's career. In the years following, he was relegated to small movie roles and guest appearances on television shows. His big break came in 1978 when he auditioned for a role on an ABC sitcom pilot called Taxi (1978) which centered around taxi cab drivers at a New York City garage. Danny auditioned for the role of dispatcher Louie DePalma. At the audition, the producers told Danny that he needed to show more attitude in order to get the part. He then slammed down the script and yelled, Who wrote this sh. The producers, realizing he was perfect for the part, brought him on board. The show was a huge success, running from 1978 to 1983. Louie DePalma, played flawlessly by Danny, became one of the most memorable (and reviled) characters in television history. While he was universally hated by TV viewers, he was well-praised by critics, winning an Emmy award and being nominated three other times. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Danny maintained his status as a great character actor with memorable roles in movies like Romancing the Stone (1984) Ruthless People (1986) Throw Momma from the Train (1987) and Twins (1988. Inside the game, Martha finds herself as her avatar Ruby Roundhouse, yet Fridge becomes Bethany's avatar Professor Sheldon Oberon, while Eddie and Milo become avatars Dr. Smolder Bravestone and Franklin Finbar respectively. After instructing Eddie and Milo on the game's rules, the group encounter non-player character Nigel Billingsley, the game's guide, who reveals that since its last use, Jumanji is suffering from a massive drought. To leave the game, Nigel reveals that the group must recover the "Falcon's Heart. a magical necklace stolen by warlord Jurgen the Brutal - which can end the drought if brought before sunlight and uttering "Jumanji. Transported to a desert called the Dunes to track down Jurgen, and after narrowly escaping a flock of pursuing ostriches, the group encounter Spencer operating as skilled thief Ming Fleetfoot, a new avatar, who agrees to help them after blaming himself for their predicament. While attempting to escape the Dunes, the group face new challenges and problems, along with collecting an in-game item called a Jumanji Berry, and discovering a pool of glowing green water that allows them to switch avatars. In the process, Eddie bickers with Milo, revealing their friendship ended when a diner they owned was sold behind Eddie's back, forcing him into retirement. After the group convince the pair to work together in escaping a troop of mandrills, they soon become reunited with Alex, as his avatar Jefferson McDonough, and Bethany, operating a new avatar called Cyclone - a black horse that can only be understood by Finbar. Working together, the party leave the Dunes, and find a river with the same glowing green water, allowing Spencer, Bethany, and Fridge to become their original avatars, while Eddie and Milo respectively end up as Ming and Cyclone. Shortly after changing characters, Jurgen captures the group with his mercenaries and brings them to his fortress. Escaping their confinement, Spencer pursues Jurgen to his airship, while the others distract his men. Finding himself unable to best Jurgen, Spencer discovers he is weak to the Jumanji Berry, incapacitating him long enough to send him plummeting to his death in the wintery fog below. Discovering Cyclone has retractable wings, Eddie and Milo work together to rescue Spencer and bring the recovered Falcon's Heart to the sun, calling out "Jumanji" and ending the drought. With the help of Alex, he found out Cyclone also had strengths and weaknesses, one of those strengths being able to fly. Returning the necklace to Nigel for safekeeping, the group are surprised when Milo elects to stay behind and protect the land. Learning he was dying in the real world and thus sought to make up for his actions, Eddie reconciles with him before parting ways. Upon returning to the real world, Spencer decides to teach his grandfather about video games, while Eddie uses what he learned in the game to convince the owner of his old diner to hire him on as a manager, with his grandson and his friends turning up to enjoy a meal together. In a mid-credits scene, the heating mechanic Spencer's mother hired finally shows up, only to be drawn to the game, while Spencer and the others are surprised to witness a flock of ostriches rush past the diner.
