The trip to greece netflix. The Trip to greece greece. Got here before Tim. The Trip to greece. The Trip to greene. The John Hurt, stopped me in my tracks. The trip to greece cast. His Bruce Forsyth is pretty bad. Rob Brydons impression of Tom Jones coughing, really grates. Good singers never clear their throats that way. It's bad for the vocal chords. No Ronnie Corbett. That's a first. The Trip to greener. Hey guys, Yesterday I saw the post about using solar power or a powerbank in Kyrgyzstan and some people said I should write up a trip report about my trekking vacation so here it is! Do note English is not my native language, so I might have made some grammar mistakes here and there. Also, it's not really of an r/Ultralight specific post, but my goal is to encourage you all to try out some unknown countries. There's so much to explore! Note: this post is only about southern Kyrgyzstan and not about northern Kyrgyzstan. Northern Kyrgyzstan is a tad more hiker friendly and it has a bit more of a developed tourism (and hiking) scene. If you would like to try out northern Kyrgyzstan, fly to Bishkek and head over to Karakol. Karakol is hiker-oriented, and you can get all the necessary gear (including gas canisters) at a place like EcoTrek. There's plenty of trails to choose from! Now for southern Kyrgyzstan. Southern Kyrgyzstan ( Osh region) gives you the opportunity to hike in the mighty Pamir mountain range (with views on summits over 23, 000ft, like Peak Lenin. We chose to hike in the Alay mountain range, specifically the Heights of Alay trek. Due to circumstances below we were forced to do a different hike instead, the Truly Nomadic Land trek. Both treks were designed by CBT Osh (Visit Alay). They have gas canisters for sale too for $5-10. We used the Wikiloc app as our route finding app. Itinerary July 15th: Flying from Amsterdam to Moscow, and from Moscow to Osh. July 16th: arrival in Osh at 6AM. Went to the CBT Osh office to sleep for a few hours, pick up a map of the Heights of Alay trek and some gas canisters. They were very helpful and provided us with enough information. 12PM we took a van with some volunteers from the US to Sary Mogul, a 4hour drive. Costs $15 for each person. Unfortunately, once arriving at the trailhead, there was an unplanned military operation ongoing due to some insurgents being spotted around the border with Tajikistan. There was still some uncertainty whether we could continue doing our planned Heights of Alay trek so we camped one night around the trailhead at 10, 000 feet (great way to acclimatize)! This night it was incredibly windy and we were thankful we had chosen to take the Hilleberg Anjan tent with us. July 17th: after almost a full day of waiting and doing some small hikes in the area we received word that we could not start with the Heights of Alay trek. We had to decide there and now to do a completely different trek that we did not have information about, the Truly Nomadic land trek. We arranged a driver with help from CBT Osh and he drove us all the way through rough 4x4 dirtroads to what usually is the end point of this trek which was originally designed as a horse riding trek. Thankfully I was able to download the Wikiloc route on my phone whilst I still had some internet reception. We arrived at the trailhead at 7PM. July 18th, day 1: Elevation gained: 3000ft / distance travelled: 5 miles. We started early but the terrain was incredibly steep and rough with alot of the trail being a bit overgrown. We also had to make a detour due to an agressive shepherd dog. It was an indredibly beautiful section tho. Made camp next to a small glacier just before the first major (and highest) pass at 10, 500 feet. July 19th, day 2: Elevation gained 3000ft / lost 2600ft / distance travelled: 4 miles. Woke up after a night of bad sleep. Started hiking up this steep section of loose rock. After 2 hours we found out we went over the wrong pass (the right one was just 200 meters to the side but impossible to reach) at 13, 100 feet. Had to go back to the right pass and crossed it. First sight was absolutely incredible! We had to stop early at 3PM due to my friend not feeling well. Wasn't bad tho, the camp site was stunning and the amount of biodiversity and natural beauty we saw in this valley was something I've never seen before. July 20th, day 3: Elevation gained 2000ft / lost 2700ft / distance travelled: 8 miles. Good section with multiple sketchy small river crossings. Passed a yurt camp with a small family (first people we saw). The most annoying of this day (and the next two days) were those damn marmots making paths all along a mountain ridge line. This made navigating and staying on the correct path difficult at times. I'm sure we hiked atleast an extra 2000ft up and down due to this. July 21st, day 4: Elevation gained 2000ft / lost 3200ft / distance travelled: 10 miles. Amazing section with alot of elevation gains and losses. You could really feel the temperature go up the lower you went. Passed a yurt camp and stopped there for a while because my friend had a nosebleed that went on for some time. Even ate some traditional bread and fermented milk balls (which is incredibly sour). Made camp a few hundred feet below the next pass. July 22nd, day 5: Elevation gained 3000ft / lost 2950ft / distance travelled: 10 miles: A good day, no nosebleed, no more headaches due to the altitude. Reached the lowest point of the hike at 7000ft. Except what we didn't know is that at this point was quite a wide, fast flowing river that you could not cross. Luckily there was a small yurt camp next to it and the boy offered us a horseride over it! We climbed a bit more to be ready to cross the next pass. Crossed a field with literally thousands of butterflies. It was amazing to see. Oh yeah, at the top of the pass we encountered a shepherd with his son. They gave us some black treats which looked like bunny poop. We ate it. Would not recommend. Threw up big time with the shepherd and his son laughing his ass off. Due to the language barrier he couldn't warn me about swallowing it. Or he did it on purpose ofcourse. July 23rd, day 6: Elevation gained 2950 ft / lost 3100ft distance travelled: 10. 5 miles: Crossed the last few passes this day. There was quite a territorial bull there which was acting aggressive to us. We made as much noise as possible (using our whistles) and thankfully it moved away after some time. This day was quite strenous as there were 2 mountain passes to pass. July 24th, day 7: Elevation gain 0ft / lost 4000ft / distance travelled: 15 miles: Had the last night on the trail. We got woken up at 2AM in the night due to a herd of cattle (horses and cows) passing our camping ground. Literally more than 200! Most of them stayed clear from us but a few curious ones we had to shoo away. It was all downhill from here. It was odd, because between 4000 and 7000 feet the landscape changed dramatically. Instead of lush greenery it now was more like Crete, Greece during the dry season. At the end of the trailhead we still did not have any cellphone reach (never had any since july 17th) so we were forced to walk upon this desolate asphalt road up north. After 1, 5 hours of hiking and just running out of our water we got a ride back to Osh where we went straight to Hotel Shanghai City in Osh. July 25 and 26: we strolled around Osh the entire day, going to the local bazaar, eating so much food. It was hot as Osh is one of the lowest points of Kyrgyzstan at 2000ft with temperatures around 35-40 degrees C. July 27th: plane back home from Osh to Moscow to Amsterdam. Tips Base pack weight: My BPW was around 24lbs excluding gas canisters and food. We started our hike both carrying roughly 44lbs! I've hiked multiple days before but never an 8 day hike with this much elevation gains and losses. This hike is what made me interested in r/Ultralight. Get a russian translation book, it really helps out. Greet people with 'Salam Aleikum' (Peace be with you in Arab) and respond with 'Aleikum Salam'. After reading my trip report you might think that Kyrgyzstan can be dangerous, but actually it is not. The people are incredibly friendly and I've never felt unsafe. They were always willing to help you out. Costs: plane ticket $400, food (almost everything bought before flying): $100 for two, money spent in Kyrgyzstan: $300. Only hike with a tent that can withstand moderate to rough winds. Our Hilleberg Anjan held up great. Use a sawyer squeeze filter and bring some Chlorine tablets to be sure. There's alot of (wild) cattle roaming free which pollutes some water streams. Water is a non issue (atleast on this trek). Only place where there isn't any water is on mountain passes for a max of 2-3 hours. Practice the LNT principle the best you can. Kyrgyzstan is just so stunning nature wise. Can't stop talking about it. It's the purest of pure where nature actually reigns for hundreds of miles in every direction. Kyrgyzstan is one of the most vulnerable countries in Central Asia (and in the whole world) to suffer the effects of climate change. Offset your carbon footprint from your vacation at a reputable carbon offset program (for Dutchies, Trees for All is a really good program). We had no way to recharge our powerbank for 9 days. There was no cellphone reach. We carried a 30, 000MAh powerbank for the two of us which was plenty for just taking snapshots, music and GPS. We had around 40% battery left. During summer months temperature varies wildly due to elevation. Coldest temp was -2 degrees C at 11, 500ft in the night. I hiked with Type B/C- mountaineering boots due to the rough terrain, but trailrunners with very good grip will be good enough too. Having non GTX trailrunners and perhaps some waterproof socks for river crossings will help for fast travel. Bring enough stuff. Sometimes help can literally be 2 days away. Make sure you're prepared for that. If you still have any questions about this trip feel fr

Have you always wanted to visit Australia? 2020 could be the year to put your plans into action and organise a trip to our fantastic country. Australia offers a wealth of wonderful opportunities and amazing experiences - from pristine beaches to unspoilt wilderness, beautiful coral reefs and vibrant, multicultural cities - there’s literally something for everyone. And organising a trip to Australia is much easier than you think. Plenty of countries are eligible for an Australian tourist visa and these days it’s quick and straightforward to apply for a tourist visa online. There are three flexible Australian tourist evisa options available and they can all be quickly applied for and processed online. Here, we guide you through Australia’s touriste-visa choices, answering all your questions and letting you make an informed choice on the most suitable electronic visa for your needs. Read on to find out more about Australia’s visitor evisas… Does everyone need a tourist visa for Australia? Yes - with the exception of Australian and New Zealand citizens, everyone who enters Australia as a tourist, to visit friends or family, or for business reasons needs to organise a tourist e-visa before their trip. Which Australian tourist evisas are available? There are currently three tourist evisas available for Australia: The Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) Visa (subclass 601), The eVisitor Visa (subclass 651), and; The Visitor Visa (subclass 600). Each of these tourist evisas allow people to visit and stay in Australia. If you hold one one of the above visitor visas you can study for a maximum of three months in Australia and undertake voluntary work if you wish. Paid work isn’t allowed under these tourist visas. A tourist visa could also be an option for extending your stay in Australia if your current Australian visa is due to expire. However, please remember that Australia’s flexible tourist visas are intended for genuine visitors and they are only available for visitors who plan to stay in Australia on a temporary basis. Please note that children travelling to Australia must have their own tourist visa and it’s necessary to process a separate e-visa application for each child. Which Australian visitor evisa should you apply for? The visitor visa you apply for depends on your reason for visiting Australia, the length of your planned stay, your nationality and the country that you’re applying from. We cover the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) Visa (subclass 601), eVisitor Visa (subclass 651), and; VisitorVisa (subclass 600) in more detail below. What are the key things you need to know about before applying for a visitor evisa? Before applying for an Australian visitor e-visa, it’s first worth checking that you can fulfill these basic requirements: You must hold a valid passport with an expiry date that is 3 months beyond the date of your arrival in Australia. You can’t apply for any of Australia’s visitor e-visas with a non-citizen passport, certificate of identity or other travel document, You must meet Australia’s health requirements and make sure that you’re free from any disease that may be a public health risk for Australian citizens (the government currently requires that all visitors to Australia are free from tuberculosis when they travel to and enter Australia), It’s also important to ensure that you meet character requirements set out by the Department of Home Affairs - you must not have been sentenced to imprisonment for 12 months or more or have any outstanding debts with the Australian government. Please ensure that you apply for these electronic visitor visas using the passport and passport number that you intend to travel to Australia with. Which tourist evisa should you apply for? Are you allowed to work in Australia with an eVisitor visa? Holders of Australia’s electronic eVisitor Visa are not allowed to work in Australia during their trip. Nonetheless, unpaid voluntary work is permitted under this visa and the business activities that we outlined in the ETA Visa section above are also allowed under the eVisitor visa. What does an eVisitor Visa look like? The e-visa will be linked electronically to your passport. You don't need to bring paper confirmation or get a stamp in your passport under this visa. Like the ETA VIsa, your eVisitor Visa will be automatically checked when you board your flight to Australia and again by Australian Immigration when you reach Australia. What happens if you want to stay in Australia for longer than 3 months? It takes a long time to get to Australia and flights often aren’t cheap. It’s understandable that you may want to visit Australia for a longer time period. I'll no doubt be back in a month. I have now officially run out of words. I'm going to need to start a new thread. Its a maze in itself trying to get to the bottom of all this. I'm going to have to add more headings, and try and trim items down to bare key sources. I started out with a vague notion that the vault had been intentionally designed to be returned from because of the way the secret passages are laid out, and with the help of others, stumbled upon a completely different hypothesis, and now, that hypothesis is enourmous and spans multiple mythologies and cultures. It is about light and dark, two halves of an equation, where the journey between forms the background of the games world. It is a tale that has been told, at the macrocosm, in one guise or another, all the way through time right back to the first cities of men. Best I can tell, the Vault of Glass was perhaps intended at some point, if not still is, a recreation of the Labyrinth of Daedalus. The raid itself is some form of allegory of the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. There are more sources of reference than that within the Vault, but to keep things simple(r), I'm just going to focus my attention there for the moment. My hypothesis is we must find a way to escape the throne room, and then climb back up through each stage to escape the Labyrinth. Why? because the Vault bends over backwards to keep the route back sealed shut, and nothing draws attention like evasive actions. Theseus did, after all, escape a Labyrinth that was near impossible to escape, but as I'm finding out, things may not be as they appear. Myth holds that Daedalus fled his home of Athens and designed for Minos, the King of Crete, a Labyrinth to house his son, the Minotaur. It was a trap of such cunning that barely even he was able to escape upon its completion. Minos, demanded from Athens a tribute of seven youths and seven maidens (either each year, or at nine year intervals, depending on the source) to be fed to the trapped Minotaur, those that entered the Labyrinth, either were eaten, or wandered lost until starvation, as once you had entered, you could not leave. After two such offerings, during the selection of the third, Theseus, the son of the King of Athens, joined the group to be sacrificed, heralding that on his successful return from slaying the Minotaur, his ship would be flying sails of pure white. Theseus did indeed kill the Minotaur, and then he managed to escape the Labyrinth with the aid of Ariadne's Thread, or in some versions the light of Ariadne's Crown. My fascination with this topic comes from another reference within the myth of Theseus. "Ægeus afterwards knowing her whom he had lain with to be Pittheus's Daughter, and guessing her to be with Child by him, he left a Sword and a pair of Shoes, hiding them under a great Stone that had a hollowness exactly fitting them, making Her only privy to it, and commanding her, that if she had a Son by him, who when he came to Man's estate shou'd be able to lift up the Stone, and take away what he had left there, she shou'd fend him away to him with those things with all secrecy, enjoining him as much as possible to conceal his Journey from all men". (Plutarch, Vita (Lives): 67) Where Theseus could not retreive a sword and boots, left to him by his father, until he had grown strong enough. I am still piecing together much of what I am reading so I will slowly add below items of interest I find just in case it triggers a connection in someone's mind. I don't anticipate the answer will be in the myth verbatim, but it may give some clues, and I am starting to find some interesting connections. I will try to pull together all sources of reference together below in each category. The Labyrinth of Daedalus This is the most important one, and to me the most interesting. The myth surrounding the Labyrinth is a treacherous as the Labyrinth was itself. Over time, variations have been created, changes in interpretation, but the common theme through each is the Labyrinth was designed as a trap, by which I mean, you could get in, but you couldn't get out. The King of Crete, having been cursed by the gods for his arrogance so that his wife, Pasiphae, laid with a sacred bull (likely with the inventive help of Daedalus himself), and gave birth to a son that was half man, half beast. "Minos resolves to remove the disgrace from his abode, and to enclose it in a habitation of many divisions, and an abode of mazes. Daedalus, a man very famed for his skill in Architecture, plans the work, and confounds the marks of distinction, and leads the eye into mazy wanderings, by the intricacy of it's various passages. " (Ovid, The Metamorphoses. Book VIII, Fable VI: 152-176) "Daedalus fills the innumerable paths with windings; and scarcely can he himself return to the entrance, so great are the intricacies of the place... and when the difficult entrance, retraced by none of those who have entered before, has been found by the aid of the maiden, by means of the thread gathered up again. Book VIII, Fable VI: 152-176) The problem I have with Ovid's interpretation here, is that he describes a maze. A maze is not a trap, the intent in it's design is different; with a maze the intent is to get to the centre, so you design the spaces around to prevent you from finding it (unicausal). Getting out of a maze is relatively easy, just keep following either the left or right hand wall on a continuous basis until you find the exit. Simple stuff, and the inescapable logic of this has resulted in a myth of mazes which alter and vary in random patterns to keep the return back disguised. If you don't have the technology to do this however, a Labyrinth, a trap, needs to be designed differently. With a Labyrinth, getting to the centre is easy, it is getting back that presents the challenge. "Flying to Crete, he [Daedalus] was favourably received by Minos, who was then at war with the Athenians. He there built the Labyrinth, as Pliny the Eldar asserts, after the plan of that in Egypt, which is described by Herodotus, Diodorus Siculus, and Strabo. Philochorus, however, as quoted by Plutarch, says that it did not resemble the Labyrinth of Egypt, and that it was only a prison in which criminals were confined. " Author comments (Ovid, The Metamorphoses. Book VIII, Fable VI: 253-261) The authors comments above regarding a Labyrinth in Egypt as precedent may not be completely off the mark. Herodotus and Strabo do indeed make reference to an Egyptian temple complex which some small evidence was found before being obliterated by a train line passing through it by the British Archaeologist Flinders Petrie, and Daedelus supposedly did spend a great deal of time in Egypt as the two nations traded with one another. In Egyptian culture, the development of a monolithic structure of caverns is not entirely unprecedented (he notes, tongue in cheek), and bears some semblance to both the cultural journey into the underworld which played a great role in Egyptian thinking, and also a more pragmatic approach as a defence against graverobbers from the riches buried with the Egyptian aristocracy. At a guess, it is likely that the development of an Egyptian Labyrinth was closely related to the temple designs for the Goddess Isis, which translated literally means 'throne'. In almost all depictions of the Labyrinth, there is a throne room in the centre, surrounded by a complex of interconnected rooms which certainly in the context of a temple, to the unfamiliar, might appear to be a maze, but are possibly little more than a natural process of spatial accretion. The significance of this connection should not be underestimated. Tying the Myth of the Labyrinth, back to an earlier source of precedent that originated in Ancient Egypt may have had a greater influence on the game design than would appear on the surface. Isis (the God of motherhood, life, nature and magic), was consort to Osiris (the God of the underworld), and it is their relationship that forms the journey from one world to the next, a journey between two points. There is however some contention over the interpretation of 'underworld' in Egyptian mythology. All our knowledge of the Ancient Egyptian journey into the underworld comes from the varied and individually bespoke descriptions given in what has been collectively titled, the Book of the Dead. "The Book of the Dead is an ancient Egyptian funerary text, used from the beginning of the New Kingdom (around 1550 BCE) to around 50 BCE. The original Egyptian name for the text, transliterated rw nw prt m hrw is translated as "Book of Coming Forth by Day". Another translation would be "Book of emerging forth into the Light". A curious tangent. I am immediately reminded of the famous Milton quote given by David Fincher in the film Seven. "Long is the way, And hard, that out of Hell leads up to Light. ". (Milton, Paradise Lost. Book II: 432-433) Which, taking slightly further was based from the writings of Alighieri, where, according to Dante, there were seven terraces to be climbed which formed the realm of purgatory (Alighieri, The Divine Comedy. Book II: Purgatorio), seven trials for the deceased to overcome before they could ascend to the light of the celestial spheres of heaven (Alighieri, The Divine Comedy. Book III: Paradiso). A fun and interesting connection to make to the Vault. Sticking with Milton and Paradise Lost for a moment also, I would note that the near heretical text tells the tale of Lucifer's rebellion against God, and eventual fall from Heaven, the impact of which creates the terraces and circles of hell deep into the ground. Milton's text is most likely allegorical of the rebellion of Oliver Cromwell against the God given Divine Right to rule of the English Monarchy, whe
