When picking things to watch at the London Film Festival the criteria was simple... read the synopsis and choose from that. If I got bogged down in anything more I was going to miss things that could have been "hidden gems", my list would also have been never-ending... but when you spot Annette Bening and Bill Nighy in a film together you can't say no really. Edward and Grace have been married for 29 years but the humdrum living has become too monotonous, for Edward at least. He's felt like his life needs something different for a while, knowing that Grace will react badly he invites their son to aid in his plan to leave, but he too is in¡Ä First rate drama about a couple (Annette Bening, Bill Nighy) who split up. The wife is torn apart but the hubby is simply in love w/ another woman. Josh Connor is the son who is caught in the middle. Directed and penned by Bill Nicholson (Shadowlands) and it¡Çs based on his own parents¡Ç split. Personal film that, though at times subtle to a fault, still resonates. I got to see this at the Landmark followed up by a Q&A with Annette Bening which was wonderful because I love her and it was very cool to see her live in concert. As for the movie itself, I had a few issues. It was really clearly adapted from a play - which is a major pet peeve of mine in a movie. There was so much dialogue and basically only 2 sets. I also think this would have been way better if Annette Bening hadn't had a British accent. She could have just been American and it would have been fine and way less distracting. The main thing, I don't think it was really for me. It got¡Ä Perhaps too many second unit cutaways to the vast, white cliffs or the turgid waves of the ever tumultuous sea! We get it: Drama Writ Large. Those decidedly cornball bits of window dressing aside, this throwback to domestic ¡Èkitchen sink¡É British melodramas is full of the requisite theatrical scenery chewing that demands attention. There¡Çs a husband, a wife and a grown child. A marriage is ending. No one is really to blame but everyone is suffering. Not much here is new narratively but it¡Çs so very well played by all, particularly an exceptional Nighy, and there are some outstanding stretches of dialogue from the writer/director. This is not a film for everyone but it unquestionably delivers its conflicts with aplomb. ¡Ä Led up by Annette Benning and Bill Nighy, this film about the dissolution of a 30 year marriage has really strong acting, some fine writing, and some surprising humor. It's tonally dissonant, swaying from some deeply affecting scenes to some undercutting humor, on the shape of a dime. It's intermixed with some wonderful music, lovely shots of the Walls of Dover, and some recitations of poems, it's all meant to be thoughtful, but it's a bit too self-serious, even with the humor. The characters are overall pretty much unlikable, selfish, and yet somehow understandable. After viewing several so un-innovative "real stories" Red Joan, Fisherman's Friends) and "social realism" films (The Last Tree, VS - even though VS's world of rap battles was fascinating) I was getting really disappointed in British cinema.

Hope Gap made up for all that. It is beautifully acted (Annette Bening is extraordinary) deep and subtle, and does carry you away.

A lover of literature, and poetry in particular, Bening¡Çs character Grace is compiling a book of verses for the full range of human experience. She intends to call it ¡ÈI Have Been Here Before, ¡É and it will serve as a kind of life preserver for the dejected and depressed, reminding that no one is experiencing hardship for the first time, and that others more eloquent have managed to put those feelings to paper, signaling the way through for all who follow. Writer-director William Nicholson intends ¡ÈHope Gap¡É to work in much the same way. Slow and stuffy, like a filmed play, but also considerably more nuanced and mature than your typical relationship drama, it¡Çs the story of a marriage that ended almost entirely out of the blue after the couple had been together for 29 years. That¡Çs a noble aim, I suppose, but a rather dreary one for audiences seeking escapism, rather than a suicide hotline ? which, incidentally, is where Grace volunteers to work, channeling her newfound cynicism into a kind of surly commiseration with those worse off than she feels. Woe is the soul who suggests ¡ÈHope Gap¡É as a date night. A film like this is better watched at home, curled up beneath the quilt with a pint of Cherry Garcia and a box of Kleenex. More than just the metaphorical discrepancy between Grace¡Çs expectations and the reality of her marriage, ¡ÈHope Gap¡É is an actual place, a scenic stretch of cliffs in Sussex, facing south toward France. It¡Çs a perfectly lovely spot to throw oneself into the ocean ? and don¡Çt think that hasn¡Çt occurred to Grace, although she¡Çs none too keen about scraping her face across the white chalk limestone on the way down. Grace and her husband have shared a house not far from the cliffs for decades, firmly entrenched in their routines. Grace never finishes her tea. Edward comes home, makes a cup for himself and retreats to his desk on the other side of the house. Edward is a history professor who spends his evenings ¡Èwikiing¡É (correcting articles on Wikipedia), which inspires one of Nicholson¡Çs many fuddy-duddy riffs on how modern society seems out of sync with his obsolete characters: ¡ÈIf you make a history mistake in a Wiki article, you click undo and revert it. ¡É (There¡Çs an even more groan-worthy one later, about paying with a chip-equipped credit card: ¡ÈIt¡Çs all contactless now. ¡É) Nicholson is a gifted writer with an impressive list of credits that includes ¡ÈUnbroken, ¡É ¡ÈGladiator¡É and ¡ÈLes Misérables¡É (nearly all of which were co-written, which makes his contributions a bit tricky to parse, although more can be told from his C. Lewis biopic, ¡ÈShadowlands, ¡É based on his own play). He gives in a bit too easily to showing his wit, which is backed by a kind of earnestness that can be uncomfortable to watch ? at least to the extent that ¡ÈHope Gap¡É is personal, a reflection of what his parents went through. Grace adopts a dog and names it after her husband. A detail like that would be corny if someone had made it up, but here it¡Çs just heartbreaking. In the weeks to follow, whenever their grown son Jamie comes home, he finds her sitting on the hall stairs, as if waiting for Edward to return. Again, brutal. He doesn¡Çt let his father off easy (Edward waits until he falls for someone else ? the mother of one of his pupils ? before finding the courage to leave), nor does he begrudge the man his newfound bliss. When Grace confronts the other woman, the stranger matter-of-factly replies, ¡ÈI think I thought there were three unhappy people, and now there¡Çs only one. ¡É The final dagger. What has Jamie lost, raised in a household without real love between his parents? They felt it once, maybe ? although a story about how they met (on the wrong train) suggests their son is the only good thing to come of the marriage. And even he seems stunted in matters of romance and home-building, judging by his life back in London. How much of himself has Nicholson put into Jamie? ¡ÈI never asked myself if she was happy or what she was thinking, ¡É the young man shares early on ? although casting Bening, who seems to have looped her English-accented lines, as his mother seems like the highest compliment, and the actress is excellent in all her bedraggled desperation. In any case, it seems like Edward was equally uncurious about a wife he took for granted, a wife who gets on his nerves. ¡ÈYou go for him, ¡É Jamie reproaches her. ¡ÈHe should fight back, ¡É she says. ¡ÈI want a reaction. ¡É What she wants is reassurance. Something has been not right about their marriage for ages, and Edward is too mild-mannered to address it. We¡Çre used to seeing Nighy play salty, extroverted characters, garrulous and good-natured, but Edward is like an old ficus, bent over by years of badgering. The more Grace picks at him, the more he retreats ¡Ä until such time that he has backed himself out of the marriage entirely. Grace wants them to stay together, but it¡Çs clear that neither Jamie nor Nicholson shares that view. The marriage has run its course. It happens. And where do people turn when it does? Well, now they¡Çll have ¡ÈHope Gap¡É to cling to ? proof that someone has been here before.
