Brief: Three friends struggle to find work in Paris. Things become more complicated when two of them fall in love with the same woman. 7,6 / 10 Star. Director: Vincente Minnelli. Cast: Oscar Levant. Release Date: 1951. 114Minutes. I came here for the music. For me the most fascinating aspect of this symphony is that was composed when he was absolutely deaf. The mastery and incommensurable knowledge he had to have to create this remembering the sound of every instrument, is the closest thing we have to divinity. Is in music, what the work of Michelangelo is in fine art. Are people that have created something so glorious that we hardly believe their talent was human. And this comes from a person completely apathetic to religiosity. But is impossible to describe something so extremely beautiful and touching without giving it ethereal characteristics.

When AFI released it's list of the Top 100 films of all time, I decided to check out the ones I'd missed, and of all 100 films listed (except the silent films, which I didn't bother with) this is THE turkey of them all. It was an ordeal just sitting through it, and here's why:
Playing this as a horn player with the Gwent youth orchestra was truly an amazing experience. what a beautiful piece... Bravisimoooooo. When will this magic show be on dvd. When I got my first real job I worked at night without pay and listened to this over and over for inspiration. it paid off. The art of expressing emotions through sounds in its absolute pectacular.

My second favorite piece of music. Still have it on the opposite side of Rapsody In Blue, my favorite piece. First heard them both at a children's concert while a 4th or 5th grader. Dad bought it per my begging as one of his monthly Columbia Record Club selection. Now 70 y.o. and still have the LP and all the memories it conjures up - the concert, the Columbia monthly selection notice, my begging my dad, the day the album was delivered, like it was filmed and it's playing on the screen in front of me. Having been an American in Paris, this music speaks to the wonder and amazement you feel when you walk the streets of that amazing city. I can't believe how well the music tells the story.

Each and every time I hear Beethovens Symphony No. 9, I wonder to myself: Has anything better? more majestic, glorious and divine? been written since 1824 (195 years ago) in music or otherwise? I struggle to think of anything that has exceeded this amazing creation from a man who was completely deaf and reportedly in turmoil with his own inner demons. The realization that something this great could be created, even during ones darkest moments of struggle and despair, inspires and lifts me and gives me hope that theres always hope for this thing we call humanity and for us as individuals.

Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron had no chemistry was too old for the part, and she was very unattractive (though in later years she blossomed into a real looker, I admit. Oscar Levant was as humorous as a graveyard, and served no purpose, at all. This was obviously filmed on the back lot of the studios, and doesn't in any way resemble Paris. All in all, it's much-a-do about nothing, and remains (to me) the most overrated film of all time. Before avid fans start screaming that I must hate musicals, I don't. I loved Chicago, The Sound Of Music, South Pacific, and many others, but this one is not worth the time to endure sitting through it. I can't think of one good thing I gained from watching it.
