Infiltrato come corriere della droga in un clan polacco, è impegnato a cercare di incastrare Il Generale, lo spietato mafioso che comanda il cartello. Durante l'operazione che dovrebbe portare all'arresto del criminale, però, qualcosa va storto: un poliziotto viene ucciso e la polizia di New York comincia ad indagare su Pete. All'FBI non resta che rimandarlo nel carcere di Bale Hill, come gli ha ordinato di fare il Generale, che vuole fargli gestire la droga all'interno della prigione. Ma uscire da lì dentro non sarà così facile. Andrea Di Stefano fa un salto di cornice e di qualità: dopo il progetto di Escobar con Benicio del Toro, di produzione francese, gira a New York (e nelle città-surrogato canadesi, comunemente usate per rimpiazzarla) un solido film di genere, americano nell'ispirazione ma personalizzato da una sensibilità europea, che traspare per esempio nel finale, e che si deve all'intervento del regista in fase di riscrittura e alla genesi del progetto, che affonda le radici nel romanzo svedese "Tre secondi" della coppia Roslund e Hellström. The Informer si muove con i giusti riferimenti, quello più emotivo de La 25esima ora e quello più d'azione (e d'intreccio) di Codice 999, con cui condivide uno degli sceneggiatori della prima ora, Matt Cook; ma sullo sfondo ci sono anche modelli più classici e in generale una predilezione per un cinema in cui i personaggi non sono pedine di un gioco più grande di loro, nemmeno nell'action-thriller, ma storie ambulanti che contemplano la possibilità del cambiamento. Se il personaggio dell'agente Montgomery non riserva sorprese, ma solo il gradito aplomb di Clive Owen, Joel Kinnaman si guadagna il ruolo da protagonista, Common (alla terza collaborazione con Kinnaman dopo Run All Night e Suicide Squad) è perfettamente in parte, mentre Rosamund Pike aggiunge un altro tassello alla galleria di ruoli fortemente radicati nel reale, cui aderisce con amore di mimesi. Anche al regista la verosimiglianza preme più di ogni cosa, d'altronde un cinema che aspira a raccontare la metropoli, non può far sconti su questo, pena lo scivolamento nel luogo comune televisivo. Ma The Informer, nel suo nucleo centrale e più ampio, si trasforma anche e soprattutto in un prison movie, e Di Stefano coglie con intelligenza l'occasione per mostrare la tragedia contemporanea delle carceri sovraffollate, con le palestre di basket trasformate in dormitori da cento letti, che rendono impossibile, per i più deboli, difendersi da aggressori e assassini. Già battezzato regista ambizioso e capace dal ritratto sfaccettato di Escobar, con questo thriller poliziesco che equilibra costantemente tensione narrativa e definizione dei personaggi, Di Stefano si conferma un nome su cui poter contare. ?
