First of all: I think it's really great that DuckTales obviously makes so many people happy and that people are enthusiastic about Uncle Scrooge and the gang, create fanart and immerse themselves in the world of Duckburg! I don't want to hurt anyone with the following, I just want to share my criticism with you. I have been reading the Duck comics since I was seven and also loved the 1987 series. But with the reboot I have my problems... By the way, please excuse my English, I'm from Germany. Style I don't understand why Disnes claims that the style of the series is inspired by Barks. The 1987 series was much closer to Barks. Now of course you have to be honest and acknowledge that DuckTales (1987) as a television cartoon was significantly overfunded - season 1 was made like a Disney movie because of a lack of experience in the production of series; Accordingly, there were extremely high-quality backgrounds, great animations and a wonderful orchestration. It is obvious that this is no longer possible today, but nowadays you also have a lot of software in production that takes a lot off your hands. Only the time-consuming and expensive intermediate phase drawing is completely eliminated, which was still done by hand for the old series (the old series - like all classic Disney films up to The Little Mermaid - was recorded with a classic multiplan camera). In this respect, there is no need for this minimalistic and artistically questionable style that has nothing to do with the comics. And you actually wanted to involve them more in the series! It is simply amateurish and therefore my aesthetic criticism of the series, because it has also led to some bad changes. If you could somehow agree with the design of Scrooge and Donald, the nephews look strange. Magica De Spell, which Barks has explicitly given an attractive appearance as a counterpart to classic ugly witches, becomes a bizarre green-skinned Maleficent copy with lizard eyes. I just don't see the need for it. The same with Flintheart Glomgold: In the 87 version, the appearance and the change in character were due to the fact that apartheid was still in South Africa at the time and the state was internationally outlawed, which is why Glomgold was redesigned as Scotsman. Now there would have been a chance to portray real Glomgold, and what do you get? A strangely shaped fat bag with a fake beard (more on the character below... ). As I said: I can be somehow satisfied with Scrooge's and Donald's character design, but some other characters look really bizarre compared to the comics that are supposed to be the inspiration... Stories & characters Here we come to a point that I simply do not understand: It seems as if the makers cannot decide what series they actually want to do: an 87 DuckTales reboot, a tribute to the original comics or a tribute the Disney afternoon series of the 90s? It looks as if the creators want to serve everything that of course cannot work, because the Disney Afternoon of the 90s is only compatible with the comics in a few points. It is known that the creators of the original idea were primarily aiming at the comics, which is why every employee was even obliged to read Don Rosa's Lo$ - they wanted to explicitly remove the "quirks" of the old show. Well, it worked on some points, not at all on others. Point 1: Superfluous characters The makers seem to want to squeeze too many characters into the series. If I give Donald a big role, I don't need Fenton Crackshell anymore, especially since this character was never very popular anyway. Launchpad also took over a part from Donald, but it was right to keep him, because this character is very popular and as far as I remember the idea of ??such a pilot was even appreciated by Barks. There is absolutely no need for the introduction of characters like Fethry Duck or Della Duck or anything - especially since I find the latter's character and that she was missing on the moon to be trashy. If you wanted to bring Della, I would have liked Don Rosa's (never worked out) idea to relate to Tralla La. The announcements for the new season unfortunately do not suggest anything good, the makers are now bringing this annoying caveman Bubba (with whom the colleagues of the original series did not know what to do after the pilot of the second season) or even Chip & Dale... Point 2: Falsified characters First of all: I see the need to change characters for the show. Barks' and Rosa's uncle Scrooge McDonald is entertaining in the comics, but doesn't work on TV, you'd rather hate him there. So of course you have to take corners and edges from him, which you did, even if it seems a bit too rejuvenated to me. The fact that the three nephews are given individuality and Webby is no longer this stereotypical and one-dimensional Daisy copy is also to be emphasized positively. I don't get very warm with the nephews, but it's at least an advance on the previous attempt in Quack Pack. Sooo, what really annoys me is what they did with two characters... Goldie I'll never forgive them for the ruin of one of my favorite characters at Barks/Rosa! I understand that the creators simply cannot implement the template - the portrayal of Goldie's kidnapping as in the flashback of "Back to the Klondike" or the events in "The Prisoner of White Agony Creek" (including the suggested sexual relationship) would trigger a media earthquake in the USA and elsewhere and would never be released by Disney for children's television! - but if they can not do that, then they should simply do the show without the character and not rewrite it to a Batman/Catwoman copy, especially since her nickname also becomes meaningless for me. What does "Glittering Goldie" stand for when she is not a dancer, but obviously an adventurer? I can't figure it out. Flintheart Glomgold This shows that the creators didn't understand the comics. I absolutely do not understand how to make such a buffoon out of Glomgold, whose new character is completely idiotic and ONLY annoying. Flintheart Glomgold was supposed to be an equal, intelligent, and unscrupulous opponent to Scrooge, but he's just a joke. Couldn't they have used John D. Rockerduck for that? He was designed much trashier by the Italian comic artists and would offer much more space for such a characterization. Instead, Flintheart, Scrooge's arguably most intelligent and criminal opponent besides Magica, has been made a clown. Other characters Also with Gyro Gearloose and Magica De Spell, the creators made strange character changes, which cannot be explained to me. Why is Gyro such an obnoxious guy? Gyro got his own comics because, as a great inventor, he was nice and kind, but sometimes a bit naive! Magica has her moments on the show, but shortly afterwards she is portrayed as a fool again. Personally, I find it unnecessary and incomprehensible that Mrs. Beakley was turned into an ex-secret agent, but fortunately the character does not appear that often. All in all, I notice that the classic opponents of Scrooge all seem much more idiotic than in the 87 version and the comics. Conclusion I don't want to make everything mad - the series has its moments and there are also some allusions to the comics (e. g. the Carl Barks paintings at Scrooge or the glacier monster from Don Rosa's Lo$). But the changes made by the show's creators have so many weaknesses that I reject the reboot and prefer the original series. I get the impression that the announced reference to the comics was either not really wanted or the creators simply did not understand the comics - maybe both. The series is therefore difficult for me to like and I have to give preference to the 87 original. I'm watching it and I am pleased that so many Americans obviously like it, but I am very disappointed. However, I hope that many of the fans of the show will read the comics. It's just a shame that the best-selling comics in the world, which were once so popular in the United States, now live there in the shadows. Great comic artists like Carl Barks, Don Rosa, William Van Horn, Daan Jippes, Vicar or Marco Rota deserve much more attention than they currently get in the United States.
