When Ajay lands in Kurnool, he discovers that Bharathi and family are running for their life and MLA Nagendra (Prakash Raj) is behind it. Director Anil Ravipudi’s Sarileru Neekevvaru was promised to be a proper family entertainer. While he made his hero mouth dialogues about respecting women, he almost forgot to implement it in his writing. The end product is the horrific stretch featuring Rashmika Mandanna. Let’s get to that later. It is heartening to see Mahesh Babu spring to life in Sarileru Neekevvaru, after so many years. He is the saving grace of this colossal mess. His expressions and comic timing reminds us of Khaleja days and brings an instant smile to our face. But, there’s only so much he can do to salvage the script. Apart from Mahesh Babu, it is Vijayshanti’s comeback that keeps us hooked to the story. She essays the role of a righteous professor and doting mother who has already sacrificed her elder son to the nation. It is safe to say that Mahesh Babu and Vijayshanti literally shoulder the film till the end. Director Anil Ravipudi’s screenplay is replete with disjointed stories that are forced together. The film could have been a decent family entertainer if it had focussed on Ajay and Bharathi’s life. But, the incorporation of Rashmika Mandanna’s episode totally spoiled the mood. Let’s get this straight. Consent and choice are two things that don’t matter in this film. We see Rashmika playing a typical 'loosu ponnu' (read: A mindless heroine who acts like a kid) who keeps stalking Mahesh Babu. In short, she is playing what heroes have played over the years. She hugs him and makes inappropriate comments without taking into consideration if he likes it or not. Men or women, no means no. The director hit a new low when he staged a fake rape scene featuring Mahesh Babu and Rashmika. The audacity to involve the heroine’s mother in faking a rape scene should be called out. On top of it, the film is billed as a family entertainer. ’ Prakash Raj’s Nagendra thinks of himself as a menacing villain but is reduced to a caricaturish villain. It’s a role he can play in his sleep and he does it effortlessly. The icing on the cake is Mahesh Babu’s comedy and his dance in the Mind Block song. The theatre erupted seeing their favourite version of the actor and as soon as the song ended, a fan shouted, Babu dance chesaru (Babu just danced) Sarileru Neekevvaru is a mediocre film that could have been interesting if only the director had concentrated on the film’s screenplay.
